HISTORY

Ladin, the native language of the local population, is a Rhaeto-Romance tongueand spoken not only in Val Badia but also in the valleys and villages surrounding the Sella massif (Val Gardena, Fodom, Fassa and Cortina d’Ampezzo) – and as far away as in the Friuli region and in the Swiss canton of Grisons. For a long time, the Dolomite regions did not have a standardised, homogeneous written version of their language. Ef-forts to unify the different dialects in writing however eventually led to the development of Ladin Dolomitan, or standard Dolomite Ladin.

DID YOU KNOW?

Ladin-speaking enclave

Finds discovered at Passo delle Erbe which date back to between 7000 and 5000 BC suggest that the Badia valley was home to temporary settle-ments long before it was permanently populated from the Bronze Age on-wards. When the Romans conquered the Alps in 15 AD, the valley became part of the Roman Empire.

Up until the Middle Ages, the Badia valley belonged to the counties of the Pustertal and Nori valleys. When it was eventually split up, the right half (Marebbe, La Valle, Badia and Corvara) was given to the Sonnenburg monastery for Benedictine nuns near San Lorenzo in the Pustertal valley. The left half, which went to the bishop of Brixen together with Rina, now makes up the municipality of San Martin de Tor (San Martin, Picolin, Ju, Lungiarü and Antermoia). It was only after Emperor Joseph II dissolved the Sonnenburg monastery in 1785 and the bishopric was secularized in 1803 that the population of the valley became direct subjects of the Austrian Empire. With the annexation of South Tyrol by Italy after WWI, the local population became Italian citizens. In 1927, the Ladin-speaking territories were split up and assigned to three different provinces: Bolzano, Trento and Belluno – a political ruling which remains valid to this day.

Today, the Ladin valleys are home to some 30,000 native speakers, and in the Ladin-speaking parts of South Tyrol and Trentino, this ancient tongue is an official language used in local administration and education.

TOWNS, VILLAGES AND HAMLETS

SAN MARTIN, the centre of the municipal area of the same name, is home to both the Micurà de Rü Institute of Ladin Culture and the Mu-seum Ladin – two significant institutions which foster and cultivate the Ladin language and customs, turning the village into the undisputed cul-tural centre of the Badia valley (read more on p. 28-29). Small and yet wow, notably welcoming Picolin is just around the corner. Lungiarü is an unspoiled mountain hamlet at the heart of the Dolomites, framed by the imposing Puez-Odle and Pütia massifs. At the foot of the latter, laid out between lush meadows and forests, lies Antermoia – the ideal starting point for a large number of hikes.

The two picturesque municipalities Marebbe and San Martin de Tor are cosily nestled at the heart of the world-famous Dolomites. With only 3000 inhabitants, over the years Marebbe has successfully retained its quaint look and character. SAN VIGILIO is both the administrative centre of the Marebbe municipal area and a key destination for tourism and cul-ture. The hamlets Pieve di Marebbe, Rina and Longega offer a fascinating glimpse of the charming historic Ladin communities. With the remarkable Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park and the popular Kronplatz ski resort on the village's doorstep, San Vigilio di Marebbe is an attractive destination for winter sports and a snow-filled break.

SATURDAYS | SUNDAYS | MONDAYS OUTDOOR ACTIVITIESDATES: from 5/12/2015 to 18/4/2016

There are plenty of outdoor activities to choose from on weekends, all accompanied by our mountain guides: Ski tours, snow-shoe hikes, freeride trips or ice climbing are available on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays upon request. For more information please get in touch with the mountain guides (details on p. 13). For organisational purposes we kindly ask you to sign up as early as possible!

The surroundings of San Vigilio and San Martin de Tor are a real paradise for every fan of mountain sports: The Fanes and Senes plateaus are ideal for idyllic snow-shoe hiking and ski touring, and Puez with its advanced high-altitude ski touring routes is still a well-kept secret among the locals. Many of the easy routes around San Vigilio or up to the refuges in the nature park can be enjoyed without a guide and are a true delight for nature lovers. While some of the routes around Puez are classified as easy tours due to their relative lack of difficulty and dangerous spots, others require a great deal of experience at high altitudes as they are very exposed and run through difficult terrain. Our local mountain guides offer both demanding tours around and up to mountain peaks for advanced skiers and easy ex-cursions for beginners looking for that extra bit of experience and safety. More information can be obtained from the Tourist Offices (for guided hikes, go to pages 10 – 12).

SKIINGSAN MARTIN / ANTERMOIA With its popular and well-known skiing resorts, the Badia valley attracts plenty of winter sports fans. Families with children however often prefer quiet destinations far from tourist centres. Small but nonetheless great, the child-friendly drag lift at the heart of Antermoia ideally caters for the needs of both beginners and those looking to improve their skills. And while you’re there, why not book a lesson with a professional skiing instructor? For more information, just ask the San Martin de Tor Tourist Office staff!

Kronplatz SNOWPARKSouth Tyrol's number one skiing resort has a spectacular snow park right next to the Belvedere lift. It is open to everybody and sun-spoilt thanks to its south-east orientation!

10. All skiers/snowboarders and witnesses, whether a responsible party or not, must exchange names and addresses following an accident. 11. Keep a safe distance to the edge of the slope as well as between yourself and others. 12. Always respect the space needed by others to safely ski or snowboard.

THE 12 FIS RULES OF CONDUCT ON THE SLOPESWe would like to remind our guests that the following rules must be ob-served at all times – the 12 FIS rules of conduct are the "laws" of the slopes. Please remember: Be careful and always act respectfully towards other skiers and snowboarders.

1. Always ski or snowboard in a way which does not harm others or put them in any kind of danger. 2. Make sure others around you can see you – and that you can see them. Adapt your speed and conduct to your skiing or snowboarding skills and to the prevail-ing conditions of terrain, snow and weather as well as to the density of traffic. 3. When approaching from behind, make sure you do not put any skiers/snowboarders ahead at risk. 4. Upon overtaking, always leave enough room for the skier/snowboarder you are overtaking to make any voluntary or involuntary movement. In Italy: At crossings, skiers/snowboarders coming from the right have the right of way. 5. When entering a slope, setting off again after stopping or moving up-wards, always look up and down the slope to avoid putting yourself or oth-ers in danger. 6. Unless absolutely necessary, avoid stopping on the slopes in narrow plac-es or where visibility is restricted. After a fall in such a place, move clear of the slope as quickly as possible. 7. All skiers/snowboarders either climbing or descending on foot must keep to the side of the slope. In Italy: Moving up the slope is, except in cases of emergency, strictly forbidden. 8. Always respect the local signs and markings. 9. In case of an accident, every skier/snowboarder is legally obligated to provide assistance.

DID YOU KNOW?In Italy, children up to the age of

14 must wear a helmet. The emergency rescue service can be called from the nearest lift

station (emergency call 118).

SAN VIGILIO

SNOW PLAYGROUNDA snowPlayground is not strictly speaking a snow park but a challeng-ing surface that can be described as somewhere between a normal slope and a fun park. Snow playgrounds typically feature a number of freestyle elements such as roller-coasters, quarter pipes, diagonal and longitudinal ripples or folds and many more fun tricks. San Vigilio's very own snow-Playground is located directly off the Pedagá slope! www.snow-star.eu/
