Winter Report 2012
Eötvös University Student Chapter of AAPG
Budapest, Hungary
Winter Report 2012
Introduction
In this semester we continued the workflow of the previous executive committee, and
organized a lot of programs for the Chapter members.
Our largest enterprise, the Transdanubian Central Range Field Trip was very successful, it
intensified the contact between the four participated chapters. I can say, it will continue in the
future.
We are delighted that the new members can join online to the AAPG already. It strongly
facilitates our administrative jobs.
Our future plans promise a pleasantly crowded semester again.

Transdanubian Central Range Field Trip
21st - 25th of August
A field trip was organized to the Transdanubian Range in Hungary from the 21st of August to
the 25th by the Eötvös University Student Chapter. 40 students, 10 from each of the 4 Student
Chapters (Eötvös and Miskolc from Hungary, Cluj-Napoca and Bucharest from Romania)
participated in this program, which was a continuation of last year’s Transylvanian trip.

On the 4th day the group visited Late Miocene (Pannonian s.l.) siliciclastic outcrops, which are
the analogues of the Neogene hydrocarbon system of the whole Pannonian basin. The group
leaders were Anna Horányi, Orsolya Győri and János Csizmeg PhD students and Professor
Szabolcs Harangi volcanologist, who introduced the team to the Neogene volcanism of the
Pannonian Basin by showing the volcanoclastic sediments of the Tihany Peninsula.
On the last day the group traveled to Zalaegerszeg to visit the Museum of the Hungarian Oil
Industry. Ákos Kiss oil engineer MSc student (Miskolc SC member) presented to us the evolution
of the oil industry from the XIX. Century to present days.
Our accommodation was very favorable for social events, as it was located in a Youth Summer
Center next to Lake Balaton.
The participants were delighted by the professional and social events we held during the
program. In the end at Budapest we left each other with a heavy heart, but with the hope that we
can continue the tradition next year and meet again on a field trip in Romania, organized by the
AAPG Bucharest Student Chapter.
We are grateful for the support of the AAPG, the MOL Hungarian Oil and Gas Plc. and the Papp
Simon Foundation.

AAPG Budapest Education Week
27th - 31th of August
The AAPG Budapest Education Week was organized this year for the first time with the
intention of creating an annual event. The purpose of the week was to offer a petroleum geology
short course presented by several experts from the region’s universities and oil companies. In
the audience, there were university students and professionals from Ukraine, Turkey, Italy,
Poland, and of course from Hungary. Our student chapter was represented as well by three
members.
After Vlastimila Dvorakova, the president of the AAPG-European office opened the course on
the first day’s morning, the first lecturer, Balázs Badics (Statoil) introduced us the theme of
Basin Analysis, Petroleum system and Play assessment. We had to deal with some practical
exercises as well which gave us a better understanding of the topic.
The second day’s program started with an example for petroleum system analysis from
Reinhard Sachsenhofer (University of Leoben), who showed us their results from the Alpine
Foreland Basin. In the afternoon we could hear a presentation about the application of structural
geology in sedimentary basins from László Fodor (Eötvös Loránd University). The third day was
opened by Peter Kukla and Janos Urai (RWTH Aachen University), they presented the topic of
prospect evaluation and seal analysis with some new achievements from their research. In the
afternoon, we heard about the economical side of petroleum exploration from Dorottya Nagy,
came from the Standard Chartered Bank from the UK.

Hill day 4
On the fourth day, we had an opportunity to examine the structural geological features we
heard on Tuesday on the field by visiting some outcrops in the Buda and Vértes Hills. In the end
of the official program, we had a chance to taste the region’s wines in an old wine cellar in Mór,
and also to get to know other students and professionals on a less formal occasion. Eventually on
Friday morning, we got an insight into petroleum engineering by Dragutin Dromitrovic from INA
Croatian Oil Company.
This week was a good opportunity to refresh the previous studies about petroleum geology,
to fill the gaps and to learn something new about this topic. During this week, we also met
several students and professionals from all around the region. Hopefully, as it is planned, this
wonderful event will be organized next year too.

Conference & Exhibition on Earth Sciences and Environmental
Protection, Miskolc, Hungary
27th - 29th of September
The Eötvös University Student Chapter participated in the 33rd Annual Conference and
Exhibition of Earth Sciences and Environmental Protection in Miskolc. This conference gave us
an excellent opportunity to meet the members of the Miskolc University Student Chapter and to
create a closer relationship with them. We are planning to have more common events int he
future. This time, they showed us their Campus and the cultural sights of their city. After the trip,
we had a common dinner where we got to know each other better. We also shared our
experiences about this year’s Imperial Barrel Award competition, which helps to further
improve our skills and knowledge.
Zsolt Nagy (Geology Msc) also showed his poster with the title of „Calculation of
unconformity related eroded stratal thicknesses along the Mid Hungarian Mobile Belt in the
Danube-Tisza Interfluve Area, Hungary, which was presented as the results of his research for
his final thesis.

Young Professional Meeting
17th October
Our Student Chapter organized a Young
Professional Meeting between the walls of the
University campus on 17th October 2012.
This event provided a perfect opportunity for
Bachelor and Master students to meet recently
graduated geoscientists who have some years of
experience in the industry.
Fifteen geologist and geophysicist graduates,
from different oil and gas companies, service companies, mining, hydrogeological and
environmental companies were invited to share their impressions, experiences and their real-
life stories with the excited audience. The audience
asked many questions, and later next to a beer many
other questions have been answered!
The pictures speak for themselves: it was a great
evening!
We are looking forward to organize similar events
in the future to help our members in the orientation
after graduation.

Budafa 3D field trip
25th October
In the early morning our team travelled to
Budafa, where the measurement took place.
Ferenc Regős, senior geophysicist gave us a
brief lecture about 3D seismic explorations
of Hungary and about the actual survey area.
Then we had the chance to observe data
processing and have a quick look at the first
stack of the data, processed so far.
After that we were transported to the
field and viewed the acquisition design, the
geophone groups and the vibroseis trucks.
We all learned a lot about the technical parameters of the devices, and understood the
difficulties of organising such a large 3D seismic survey (about half a thousand km2). After all I
assume this field trip was a really useful experiment for the students and it was a good occasion
to meet with specialists from the oil industry.
We visited the 3D seismic survey by favour of MOL Plc. and GES Ltd.

Tápióság Field Trip
6th November
Our Student Chapter organized a field trip to Tápióság (ca. 60 km from Budapest). Thanks to
MOL Plc., especially András Németh and Anikó Horti, we could visit an exploration drilling.
The well have been drilling since 1.5 month and they
are at the depth of about 2.5 km. Near the area (Northern
Hungarian Paleogene Basin) there are producing wells so
the area is really exciting for HC exploration. On the field
Botond Kemény well site geologist showed us the details
of the well and the “extraordinary life” of the drilling
specialists. We could examine a few core samples, the
mud measuring instruments and the mud logging unit.

NosztalGEO 2012 – Changes in the Geological Opinion of the Great
Hungarian Plain
16th November
Five of the student chapter members had the opportunity to participate in the first ever
NosztalGEO – a series of lectures about the geology of the Great Hungarian Plain. The organizer’s
(Hungarian Geological Society, Great Hungarian Plain Regional Branch) aim was to summarize
the research, the industry and the answered or yet unanswered questions of the last decades as
well as to introduce senior and young professionals and students.
The one-day conference was held in Algyő, near the heart of the largest Hungarian
hydrocarbon field. The lectures were thematic: from the basement of the Pannonian Basin to the
Quaternary formations, the history of science and the most recent discoveries were presented
and discussed. Probably the most stimulating debates were the ones dealing with the Miocene
where the hydrocarbons come into focus. Other than listening to the different views of the
professionals we also had the chance to present our own research. Our scientifically rewarding
day was supported by the Papp Simon Foundation, we are thankful for their support.
2nd Workshop on the Pannonian Basin
7th December
In this semester we could continue the tradition of the
Workshop, which was organized in cooperation with the
Hungarian Geological Society again. The goal was to invite a
renowned professional working in the industry abroad, who
would share his experience and knowledge with the interior
students and young professionals. This time, our guest
lecturer was Gábor Vakarcs, non-operated asset manager
of the Kuwait Energy. He graduated at the Eötvös Loránd
University, defended his PhD at the Rice University, and he
has 20 years experience by the MOL Hungarian Oil and Gas
Plc., where his career begun.
We heard a great lecture about the Cenozoic sequence
stratigraphy of European basins, and got an insight on the method and the workflow of such
Winter Report 2012 interpretation and application, specially for the Pannonian basin. He gave us a new perspective,
which was invaluable. It was a four-hour program, so between the talks the participants could
discuss the topic between each other and also with the lecturer.
A successful event is behind us, large audiences – students, young and expert geoscientists –
were curious for the workshop that met our expectation and wish to continue this tradition in
the next year.

AAPG Christmas Party & Workshop
20th December
We had enough enthusiasm to finish the year with a small
Christmas workshop, that was advertised with a surprise
lecture, which was really two lectures, and so the surprise
was double. The first theme was the Geology of the Bakony-
Balaton Highland volcanic field from Ágnes Király and Attila
Balázs (Msc Geophysicists). They are investigating this area
Winter Report 2012 with new magnetic and seismic measurements, and it was the first time to present their results.
The second surprise was the Neogene hydrocarbon potential and the inert gas risk of the
Danube basin from János Csizmeg (Earth Science PhD). We got a pretty good picture about the
application of the basin analysis.
In the continuation we saw two photo reports: the 2012 Aberdeen AAPG short course’s from
Attila Schlakker and an Iranian trip’s from Attila Balázs. The workshop had a really pleasant
atmosphere. It was a great opportunity also to say goodbye and wish Merry Christmas and
Happy New Year with new scientific experiences.
