HUSKY DREAMLAND AND SNOWCASTLE WITH WALK ON THE FROZEN SEA

Come and enjoy a husky safari in the Kivalo wilderness dreamland! We pick you up from the hotel and get to Tornio, where we try on your arctic gear. We then drive to Kivalo (1h), where we meet Ulla, a husky musher from the area who lives with her dogs. We start our tour, lasting around 5-10 km depending on conditions. After a hot drink and a snack, we drive to Kemi (30 mins) where you can visit the Snowcastle on your own (only available starting 19 January). Weather permitting, we will then have the most unusual walk of your life: on the surface of the frozen Baltic Sea. Here you learn about ice: how it forms, how much it is and how it can be used in various ways. We then drive you back to your hotel. Option for dinner available.

SNOWMOBILE TO AN ANCIENT FISHING VILLAGE

We depart from Tornio where you try on your arctic gear. After a security brief, you climb on your snowmobile (2 persons per vehicle, one driver and one passenger). We then drive up the frozen river for around 20 km (we stop mid way in order to switch driver). We end our ride at lunchtime in the old fisherman village of Kukkola, where ancient traditions continue in spite of technology. Here you learn how to make bread the old way. We also guide you through the village, the fish museum, the old sawmill, the water mill, some old houses dating back to the 1800s. After a coffee break at the local restaurant we drive you back to your hotel. Option for dinner available.

ARCTIC LANDSCAPES: A PHOTOGRAPHIC AND HISTORICAL TOUR

In the fascinating Torne River Valley, where you will follow the steps of ancient explorers such as Maupertuis and Acerbi. We climb up to the Aavasaksanvaara hill and enjoy endless views over Lapland. We end up the day in a small souvenir factory situated right by the border of Finland and Sweden – here we can have a snack and you can choose between countless, high-quality objects to take back with you as souvenirs. We then proceed to Juoksenki where we cross the Arctic Circle and learn why the position of this mystical place changes all the time.

A DAY ON ICE

Live a day on the frozen Tornio river – this is an otherworldly experience! Learn the ancient fishing rituals that are still a popular pastime these days! Take a 20-minute walk by snowshoes and enjoy a snack and wonderful views surrounded by the river ice – you’ll likely be the only group around. If you dare, take a dip in the ice – we’ll dig a hole for you! We dig out the ice and learn about its composition. We end the day with a local fisherman who tells you all about the ancient fishing techniques. He will try his luck with the burbot nets while you’re there. We drive back to your hotel (30 mins).

REINDEERS AND SHAMANS – TRADITIONS FROM THE HEART OF LAPLAND

We drive up to Svanstein (1h30) where we meet Sixten, an old person of Sàmi descent who owns numerous reindeers. Sixten will proudly speak about his life in this remote part of the world – an enchanting experience! You can feed the animals and take pictures with them. Sixten is also an award-winning knife artisan – his work is displayed in the reindeer farm: a unique opportunity for shopping! After waving Sixten goodbye, we drive back to Juoksenki (20 min) where we cross the Arctic Circle and take a picture next to the iconic monument. We stop for lunch at the organic Hulkoffgården farm, where you can live through a unique experience: an authentic shaman will gather you around the fire and tell you all about the energy that springs out of your body. A unique experience for your stay in the Heart of Lapland.

CHRISTMAS ATMOSPHERE (WITH SANTA CLAUS)

We drive to Kukkola (20 mins), where we put on our snowshoes and go through a small forest, where we can learn about the different kinds of trees that live in this area. Once we have identified a good tree, we cut it with a small saw and bring it to the cottage, where we decorate it with the most beautiful lights you have seen in your life. Later on, we prepare typical Christmas biscuits, which you can then taste with coffee. We wait for Santa to show up – maybe he will have some presents for us! We finally drive back to your hotel.

HUNTING FOR THE NORTHERN LIGHTS

We drive to Kukkola and go through a quick presentation where you can learn all about northern lights, how they form, where to look for them and how to photograph them. We then take our seats outside in the theatre of nature and wait for the show to start. Our guides will be around all the time, in order to assist you. Nearby is a warm place with toilets. Northern Lights are an unpredictable phenomenon and their visibility cannot be guaranteed.

SAUNA AND HOT TUB UNDER THE NORTHERN LIGHTS

We drive to Kukkola and go through the history of sauna, how it was born and how it is still today an essential part of life in Lapland. We learn how the word sauna was brought to worldwide usage by an Italian explorer back in the late 1700s. After this history dip, you can take possession of your private sauna. There are saunas for groups between 4 and 20 people. A hot tub allows you to gaze at the northern sky while in your swimsuits – an incredible experience. With some luck you’ll be able to see the Northern Lights straight from the hot tub. Northern Lights are an unpredictable phenomenon and their visibility cannot be guaranteed.
