Your Generosity is Needed to Help CHOTK Continue its Mission

It’s been another year of life-saving rescues and heartwarming stories at The Cat House on the Kings.

As 2021 draws to a close, we’ve already saved more than 1,500 lives, treated countless sick and injured cats, lovingly fostered hundreds of kittens and arranged numerous happy adoptions. It’s what we do.

But we couldn’t do it without the emotional and financial support of our friends and donors. We appreciate, and rely upon, your help to keep our much-needed sanctuary operating and thriving.

It’s been a tough year for just about everyone, and that includes The Cat House on the Kings. We don’t receive any government funding and the bills add up fast -- food, litter, surgeries, x-rays, medical care, staff and electricity, just to name a few big-ticket items.

“Donations are down in 2021,” said Tammy Barker, assistant director at The Cat House. “That really makes it hard to continue our mission to help everyone who calls for spay/neuter and other kinds of assistance. Also, we have taken in hundreds of medical cases this year -- but the cats are worth it. If we don’t help them, then who will?”

Many rescued cats and kittens, and our permanent residents, need special care and attention. Snowflake, for example, is a senior at the sanctuary. She needed, and received, dental surgery so that she could eat and live a more comfortable life. Little Starburst had multiple fractures in a leg that couldn’t be saved, so he underwent surgery and is learning to live life on three legs.

Then there are kittens – and lots of them. We need more fosters and more resources to feed and care for them, provide vaccinations and spay/neuter, and then find them good homes.

The economy only puts a bigger strain on our sanctuary. Charitable donations tend to fall in tough times and people are more likely to leave pets behind when they move. Abandoned animals cannot fend for themselves, and that means The Cat House is more important than ever. (Your Generosity continued on page 2)

A Holiday Message from Our Founder/Director Lynea Lattanzio

As we enter the holiday sea-son, The Cat House on the Kings celebrates its ongoing mission to rescue and save lives. ‘Clear the Shelters’ Nets Generous Sum Thanks to our loyal supporters, The Cat House on the Kings pulled in nearly $52,000 in the recent “Clear the Shel-ters” 2021 campaign. The national campaign supports shelters and rescues like ours by encouraging people to adopt and to donate to animal welfare organizations. This year, through a combination of donations and matching funds, The Cat House raised $51,833 for its ongoing mission to rescue animals and save lives. We’re grateful for your support! The annual Clear the Shelters campaign, launched in 2015, is sponsored by NBC and Telemundo and supported by Greater Good Charities and The Animal Rescue Site. In part, the event recognizes that shelters and rescues (like CHOTK) are stretched thin especially during the summer because warmer months bring more litters of puppies and kittens. This year, more than $530,000 was donated to participat-ing animal shelters and rescues. Since the program began, “Clear the Shelters” has resulted in more than 688,000 pet adoptions. Here at The Cat House, we’re honored and thankful for your continued financial support. Grants, contest wins and individual donations help advance our core mission to provide a no-cage, no-kill sanctuary for feral and abandoned cats and kittens; adopt rescued animals into safe, permanent homes; educate the public about animal welfare and offer low-cost spay and neuter referrals. Despite the challenges of COVID-19 and economic blows to our fundraising, we are working hard at our mission every day. The Cat House on the Kings always welcomes help to support the hundreds of kittens and cats in our care. Mail checks to CHOTK, 7120 S. Kings River Road, Parlier CA 93648; call (559) 638-0030 to make a credit card donation (Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.); or donate online at our website: www.cathouseonthekings.com/donate.

Always Needed: Volunteers, Foster Homes

Siblings Enjoy a Musical Life in OregonClaudia Paige has always moved to her own beat –

she is, after all, a professional drummer. After losing a few older cats in succession, Claudia

and her wife, Christina Castle-Rey, wanted to adopt and also to make a difference. Back in 2015, they were living in Mendocino and, after volunteering at the Humane Society and county animal shelter, recognized who needed them most.

“Knowing that often black kitties and cats are the last to be adopted, and the first to euthanized, we were on the search for black kittens,” Claudia said via email. “We wanted siblings. Then we saw these tiny little gems. A brother and sister.”

Those siblings were Moki and Jambalaya (Jamba for short), who were up for adoption from The Cat House on the Kings. Claudia and Christina adopted the pair and ever since, the brother and sister

have been a constant in a colorful musical world rooted in Oregon since 2016.

“We can’t be happier,” she said. “Moki and Jamba saved us from so much loss and brightened our world.”

Claudia tours the world as a professional drummer – drumming for artists ranging from Bonnie Raittto members of Santana – and runs a music program,Octopus School of Drums for at-risk kids andRhythmHealing forseniors. Her felinefamily is an importantmusical influence sinceshe also writes songsabout her cats andsings to them.

The family has grown to include Zuli, adopted from an Oregon rescue. Zuli is in love with Jamba, Claudia said, and “is a sweet boy but he is deaf and Jamba has really helped him.”

(You can watch a brief video of Jamba surfing on cardboard, with Zuli at his side, here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=N25cImG9L2U. Claudia, naturally, provides the musical accompaniment.)

Claudia, a longtime animal advocate, continues to be a fan of The Cat House and our work. “You have helped so many cats find their forever home and I am just in awe to all you do,” she said.

Family Finds Just the Right Fit in Adopting from The Cat House

Rosalie Davis and her family were looking for another furry companion when she saw a sweet ball of fluff at The Cat House on the Kings.

“Her face called to me,” Rosalie said via email. “She has the sweetest round eyes, and this brown mark above her left eye, on her forehead, like a strawberry mark, just like my son had when he was born.

“As I read more on her profile, I knew she was meant to be part of our family.”

Today, this sweetheart – now named Strawberry – is part of the family that includes three kids, another cat and a dog. Strawberry joined the household following the loss of the family’s cat, “and we were searching for just the right cat that would get along with a senior cat, Marty, and our young lab Trixie,” Rosalie said.

A diligent search turned up The Cat House on the Kings, and little Strawberry has been the perfect fit.

“As soon as I met her, she was ready to come home, loving me and wrapping around my neck,” Rosalie said. At home, Strawberry was eager to explore and to meet Trixie – even jumping over the gate separating them. The two have become fast friends – sleeping together and playing hide and seek – while Marty needed a bit more time but has warmed up to Strawberry.

“All three of my teenagers can’t get enough of cuddling and petting Strawberry,” Rosalie said. “You can always count on us running around the house with a makeshift mini-fishing pole of yarn with Strawberry chasing us with Trixie following, or playing with her laser toy, or constantly moving sofas to get her toys that she strongly paws under there.”

Strawberry has a strong purr and an unusual meow – “it’s more like a moo, like a little cow. It’s so cute andunique,” Rosalie said.

She’s also always underfoot, playing, and “I don’t believe she knows how to walk, I think she only knows how to run, because she is so fast,” Rosalie said. “Even when I am in the other room, I can hear her quick little feet going. When she does settle, she will nestle next to anyone anywhere. She will let me carry her like a baby and she will fall asleep in my arms purring away. She is so full of love and trust.”

This was Rosalie’s first time adopting from The Cat House, and she definitely would recommend CHOTK. “I already have to my mother,” she said.

Help The Cat House Save More Lives by Becoming a Foster Parent

If you have a little extra love to give – and a little extra space – you can become a foster parent for The Cat House on the Kings.

We desperately need fosters who can fill in as the mom (or dad) to a litter of kittens or a mama with kittens. It’s a wonderful experience and one that is critical to rescuing and socializing kittens for adoption.

“Fostering is an extremely rewarding experience,” said Tammy Barker, assistant director at CHOTK. “With the right tools and information, anyone can learn to save the lives of kittens and cats. A spare room or separate area, large cage or crate for fostering is great. We provide food, medical care and also find homes for the kittens once they are fixed, vaccinated and ready for adoption.”

Some of our rescues are kittens like Pudding, one of Tammy’s recent fosters. This sweetheart might have died but instead was found and rescued by one of our foster parents.

Pudding had a badly infected eye that could not be saved. Following that kind of surgery, kittens like Pudding are fragile and need the care of an experienced foster parent for three or four weeks. Today, she is recovering well and pictured here with her new pal, Sherbet, another foster who had the same surgery.

Tammy and Kathy Scheer, our foster coordinator, take on these special needs cases, and both have fostered thousands of kittens. Tammy also has the support of her husband, Terry, who feeds and nurtures them when she is busy. But we need more help.

“The demand to take in kittens in the San Joaquin Valley is so huge that without fosters, there is no way we can say yes to these requests,” Tammy said. “Bottle-fed kittens need round-the-clock care and we simply don’t have enough staff to do that. We don’t have enough cages or rooms for all of the requests that come in from the public.

“We need fosters.”Do you have what it takes to help save lives? If you’re interested, please fill out our online foster application at www.cathouseonthekings.com/foster to tell us about yourself and your home. You must live within a roughly one-hour drive of our Petco Adoption Center in Fresno and be willing to foster for a minimum of three or four weeks.

We hope you can join The Cat House team because the more foster homes we have, the more lives we can save.

CHOTK Rescues 17 Cats from Death’s Door At The Cat House on the Kings, one of the biggest parts of our mission is saving lives. We often go the extra mile to do that – and in one recent case, roughly 400 miles roundtrip.

In October, we rescued 17 cats from death’s door at a Southern California animal control agency. We picked up these adult and se-nior cats just a day or so before they were scheduled to be euthanized.

The cats originally came from a rescue that shut down after its owner died. A generous donor coordinated their transport to The Cat House on the Kings and partially paid for their surrender.

The cats range in age from 2 or 3 to 16, according to CHOTK founder/director Lynea Lattanzio. “They needed everything,” she said of the cats’ condition when they arrived.

Once the 17 newcom-ers complete health checks and quarantine, they will likely live out their days at our sanctuary in Parlier.

We simply couldn’t say no to these cats even though we already have hundreds of mouths to feed. To help with their care, mail checks to CHOTK, 7120 S. Kings River Road, Parlier CA 93648; call (559) 638-0030 to make a credit card donation (Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.); or donate online at our website: www.cathouseonthekings.com/donate.

Stepping into Santa’s shoes this holiday season? Let The Cat House on the Kings help with that list!

We’re stocked with plenty of purr-fect presents for animal lovers (and especially cats). Our merry merchandise ranges from t-shirts and bags to calendars and caps, and you can check out the selection in our online store at www.cathouseonthekings.com/shop.

New this fall is our men’s and women’s “Can’t Fix Stupid” t-shirts in red. The shirts come in various sizes and

sell for $20; the men’s version is a crew neck and the women’s is a V-neck.

Also new is our 30th Anniversary Magnet, which commemorates the more than 50,000 lives we’ve saved over our three decades of work. The 8 ½-inch by 6-inch magnet is designed by Janet McAlpine, who also designed our 2022 calendar. You can find all the

details at The Cat House 30th Anniversary Magnet (www.cathouseonthekings.com/magnet).

Each colorful magnet is $10; shipping and handling is free for domestic (U.S.A.) orders. Shipping to Canada and Mexico is $8 for a single item or $4 per item when two or more are ordered. Other international orders ship

for $8 for a single item or $4 per item when two are more are ordered.

Our online store has plenty of other shirts, sweaters, hoodies, beanies and more – all with signature Cat House on the Kings artwork. Our 14-ounce, red plastic mug just went on sale for $3 and we’re about to unveil a new black hoodie, so watch our site for that release.

A current option is the cotton canvas, teal tote bag priced at $15 and perfect for shopping trips. Shipping and handling is free for domestic orders, and each additional tote is only $10 when shipped to the same address.

Finally, limited quantities of our 2022 calendar are available at 2022 Cat House Calendar (www.cathouseonthekings.com/calendar). This eighth edition of our calendar includes high-quality photos, facts and trivia – and somecome with theautograph ofour founderand director,LyneaLattanzio.

These signed calendars are sent out randomly, so anyone has an equal chance of getting Lynea’s autograph. The first calendar is $20, and each additional calendar shipped to the same address is $15.

Shipping is free in the U.S.; shipping is $6 per item to Canada and Mexico. All other international orders ship for $12 for a single calendar or $9 per item when two or more are ordered.

Remember, when you buy from us you are supporting our mission to rescue and care for abandoned cats and kittens. And you also get some pretty nice stuff!

Happy holidays!

Got a Clunker? Consider Donating It to Benefit The Cat House

Our cats can’t drive but they can benefit when you donate a clunker – or even a nicer ride – to support The Cat House on the Kings.

CHOTK wins when someone hands over a vehicle – running or not – on our behalf through CARS (Charitable Adult Rides & Services). Most donated vehicles are sold through used-car markets, and we benefit from those sales. Donations also are generally tax-deductible for the donor.

“We have had several people donate cars through the company on the website,” said Tammy Barker, assistant director at CHOTK. “They say it is very easy way to get rid of an unwanted car and help out The Cat House.”

Our nonprofit partner, CARS, works with a large network of suppliers to sell donated vehicles and maximize the return to us and the tax benefit to the donor. When you donate your vehicle, you skip the headache of advertising, costly repairs and low trade-in offers.

In addition, this is another creative way to support The Cat House on the Kings and our mission to save lives. Look for details at www.cathouseonthekings.com/cars.

Online Shoppers Help Support CHOTKHere at The Cat House on the Kings, we’re celebrating the generosity of

shoppers who help us care for and feed our hungry cats and kittens. Thanks to you, CHOTK recently pulled in $12,946.12 from the AmazonS-

mile Foundation based on shopping activity between April 1 and June 30. We also received a $974.24 grant from the PayPal Giving Fund based on donors who recommended CHOTK through charitable programs on PayPal, eBay, GoFundMe, CrowdRise, Airbnb, Humble Bundle and other online platforms.

In addition, our sanctuary picked up $166.53 from shoppers who visited Ralphs and Food 4 Less. Shoppers who link their rewards cards to CHOTK generate donations on our behalf, and this was the total benefit from June through August.

As always, we are extremely grateful for this financial support. You also can help by shopping our wish lists on AmazonSmile or Chewy, available on our website at www.cathouseonthekings.com/wishlist.

Amazon donates 0.5% of the price of each eligible AmazonSmile pur-chase to the charitable organization identified by the buyer, and Chewy.com donates $15 to CHOTK for each first-time customer. You can find a full list of our shopping partners on The Cat House website.

We are incredibly grateful for this support, especially since our non-profit receives no government funding. We rely heavily on donations and grants like these to continue our rescue mission.

Thank you from the staff – and cats – at CHOTK!
