THROUGH THE LAND OF WINE Welcome to Moravia Come, come; good wine is a good familiar creature if it be well used, proclaimed William Shakespeare – and he certainly spoke for the Moravian wine-growers, who can use it really well. For people from South Moravia wine is not only the salt of life, but also a hobby, work and endless love. Wine is a heady and mes- merizing drink, it is variable, having its own history written into the Moravian countryside. No matter if you belong among the eager beginners or advanced lovers of wine, come to Moravia and listen to the story how the wine was born. It begins in spring in the awakening vineyards, culmi- nates with the summer sun and gains its final shape in the autumn during vintage, bub- bling fermentation which will deliver “The Wine”. Come to Moravia and take an evening stroll through the street of wine cellars with historical pressrooms, where you will meet wine-growers, who will let you peek under the hat of their secrets. If they say “Let’s taste something”, do not hesi- tate, because wine-tasting in the stylish environment will be a great experience for all your senses. Moravia is woven through by more than a thousand of kilo- metres of marked trails, known as Moravian wine-growing routes. Once you come across their symbol – the outline of a cellar – you have found your way. The routes are zigzag- ging through the wine-grow- ing countryside, they turn towards the look-outs, lead through the wine cellar streets and join the significant wine- growing villages. History of viticulture in MoraviaTh e fi rst vineyards in Roman colonies behind the Alps were established between 276–282, during the reign of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius Prob. Th e oldest witnesses to wine-growing in Moravia are the archaeological fi ndings of the wine-growers’ tools, with which the Roman legionaries worked with on the vineyards below Pálava.

Viticulture developed fur-

ther in the per iod of the

the Great Moravian Duke

Svatopluk sent the Bohemian

Duke Bořivoj and his wife Lud-

mila a barrel of Moravian wine

to celebrate the birthday of

their son Spytihněv. It was a

wonderful gift ; as Bořivoj and

Ludmila immediately started

to support the

establ ishment

of the fi rst vine-

The wine-growing region

Moravia is presently composed

of four sub-regions: Znojmo,

Mikulov, Velké Pavlovice and

Slovacko. It involves circa

96 % of area of registered vine-

yards in the Czech Republic,

whilst the total vineyard area

reaches 18,000 hectares. Th e

uniqueness of Moravian wines

is given by the specifi c climate

conditions, various geologi-

cal origin, variability of indi-

vidual vintages, countryside

relief as well as the historical

traditions of individual parts

of Moravia. The local wines

thanks to this variability were

gift ed with attractive fl owery

tones in aroma, pleasant un-

obtrusive acid and easy taste

encouraging to take another

sip.
