ISU Soil & Plant Analysis Laboratory Will Close Permanently 12-31-17 The Soil and Plant Analysis Laboratory in the Department of Agronomy at Iowa State University has offered commercial soil, plant, water and environmental testing services for over 35 years. soil and plant testing laboratories serving Iowa here at the Iowa Department of Agriculture & Land Stewardship here: http://www.iowaagriculture.gov/feedAndFertilizer/pdfs/2017/Cert%20Labs%20after%20Q3docx.pdf

ISU Horticulture Extension & Outreach staff are available to review or provide a second opinion regarding fertilizer recommendations coming from the soil samples processed by commercial laboratories. This is nothing new, we have done this in the past. We would recommend that at minimum, you request testing for the following vineyard soil parameters when working with a commercial laboratory: Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium, Magnesium, Zinc, % Organic Matter, pH, buffer pH and Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC). Testing for additional micronutrients or salinity is typically not recommended unless a petiole/leaf analysis, visual plant symptom or special issue requires such. Feel free to contact Dr. Diana Cochran, or myself, Michael White for guidance on soil or plant tissue laboratory test results.

Congrats to these Midwest Wineries for Wins at the Jefferson Cup The 18th Jefferson Cup Invitational wine competition was held Friday – Sunday, November 17 – 19 this year on the top floor of the Brass on Baltimore event center in Kansas City, Missouri. A total of 743 wines from 27 states were evaluated by 19 judges. The competition culminated with 16 Jefferson Cup Trophies being awarded. Fireside Winery at Marengo, IA won one of these Jefferson Cup Trophies for their Frontenac Gris. Their Hearthstone (light bodied Marquette) won at Double Gold and their Frontenac received a Gold. Ackerman Winery also did well with their Raspberry receiving a Gold medal. Congrats to both Ackerman & Fireside! Here are how the wineries from Iowa and our nearby states did at this competition: State # of Wineries Jefferson Cup Double Gold Gold Silver Bronze IA 2 1 1 IL 2 1 5 4 KS 5 1 3 5 10 8 MO 19 3 12 10 45 34 ND 1 2 NE 1 1 1 SD 1 1 6 4___ 31 5 16 17 69 51 Following the Jefferson Cup competition, the remaining wines are donated for an annual event that benefits children and adults in need. This year the Jefferson Cup raised more than $200,000 for AngelFlight Central. In more than a decade of assisting the AngelFlight Central, the Jefferson Cup has raised nearly 1.5 million dollars. They hope that these events reflect well upon the great heritage of Thomas Jefferson. A complete list of the medal winners can be found here: http://thejeffersoncup.com/results/2017%20Jefferson%20Cup%20Awards%20complete.pdf Check out pictures of this event on the Jefferson Cup Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/TheJeffersonCupInvitational/

At What Temperature Does Wine Freeze The freezing point of wine depends upon its alcohol content and the presence of other components such as salts and sugars; for a wine with an alcohol content of 13.5 to 14 percent it’s going to be about 20°F. Ports, which are usually around 20 percent alcohol, won’t start to ice up until the temperature drops to about 15°F. A low-alcohol Riesling (say, 8.5 percent) will start turning into a slushy at about 25°F. (a) The freezing point of a typical 12.5 % alcohol wine would be about -21°F by the alcohol alone. In addition, there are some sugars, salts, etc. which will lower the freezing point a little more. It's important to realize that the Table 1. University of Illinois Physics Department wine will not all freeze if cooled down to that freezing point in the above table. When some ice starts to form, it contains almost pure water, leaving the remaining liquid with a higher concentration of alcohol, etc, and hence a lower freezing point. Pure ethanol has a freezing point of around -179°F. Under Midwest winter freezing conditions, you'll get wine slush, not solid wine ice. Nonetheless, if some of the wine does freeze, the increased volume of the ice can increase the pressure enough to slide the cork out and degrade the seal. If some case an ice plug could form in the neck and crack the bottle. (b)

a. How Cold is Too Cold, 1-18-17 Grapevine Cottage b. Q & A: freezing wine, 11-3-15 University of Illinois Physics Department

Many wineries have cold weather shipping policies. They often will not ship if the temperatures are below 20°F. They will often hold the shipments until the temperatures increase. Other options would include shipping in insulated containers and making sure to have shipments not setting over the weekend in transit.

FREE: Wine Vine 101 Online course from Adelaide University – Australia I completed this course in 2016. This FREE “World of Wine: From Grape to Glass” Online wine course is offered by Adelaide University in Australia. It was a good course. One that I would highly recommend for new and experienced tasting room staff. (THE PRICE IS RIGHT!) It provides a good review of the winegrape industry of the world, how the grapes are grown and how the wine is made. It reviews many of the wine taste descriptors and how to read a label. The course is FREE, but for $50 you can get a certificate of completion. mlw The World of Wine: From Grape to Glass will cover:

Week 1: Wine Styles and Sensory Evaluation Week 2: The Grape Vine Week 3: The Vineyard Week 4: Wine Production Week 5: Wine Making Week 6: Grape and Wine Science

This is a self-paced course. Check it out here: https://www.edx.org/course/world-wine-grape-glass-adelaidex-wine101x-2
