See You at the Clay County Fair! http://www.claycountyfair.com/

9-10, Joanna 3 Aronia Berry Harvesting Field Day – Council Bluffs, IA Charlie and Jolene Caldwell, owner/operators of Black Squirrel Vineyard & Winery invited a small contingent of ISU Extension folks to visit their debut of harvesting Aronia berries on their organic farm located just northeast of Council Bluffs, IA. The weather was excellent for harvesting and the Joanna 3 harvester made by Weremczuk AgroMachines in Poland worked well. Charlie showed us how the harvester worked on some Aronia berries he planted 10 years ago. He harvested half of the row on each pass. The company literature indicated that it can harvest ¼ to 1/3 acre per hour. The machine weights approximately 3,440 lbs. and requires a tractor engine of a least 30 HP to run it. It requires a 540 rpm PTO. Here a few pictures of this event:

Driftless Experimental Wine Festival –Hanover, IL

When: 2 – 4 p.m. Sunday, October 20, 2013 Where: Fergedaboutit Vineyard & Winery, 4595 W. Spear Rd. Hanover, IL 61641 What: The Driftless Experimental Wine Festival was initiated to bring together independent wine makers who produce wines made from grapes grown within the Upper Mississippi River Valley AVA (Northwest Illinois, Northeast Iowa, Southeast Minnesota, and Southwest Wisconsin), AKA the Driftless Area. Wine makers, commercial or independent, are invited to exhibit wines made from northern cultivars grown in the Driftless Area. Wines for exhibition can be new, in process of aging or undergoing bench trials. Gerald Podraza of Mount Hope Vineyard said the objective of the Festival is to provide winemakers with feedback about wines they are developing. The Festival is also open to consumers. All revenue generated from the Festival will fund college scholarships at Southern Illinois University in the academic specializations of horticulture and architecture (winery design.) This event requires registration two weeks in advance. Contact Gerry at: [email protected] for more information.

Show n Tell I stopped by to visit with Blake Smith and his wife Barb Schomaker on my way up to the Clay County Fair in Spencer on Saturday morning, 9-14-13. Blake and Barb showed me around their 12 acres of trellised blackberries. All 71 rows are trellised with the new ‘Rotating Cross Arm” RCA trellis system from Trellis Growing Systems and are irrigated. This 12 acre blackberry patch is located approximately 12 miles southeast of Spencer, Iowa. They currently sell blackberries on both the wholesale and retail market. Blake is considering selling to some wineries in 2014. You can contact Blake at 515-351-9206 or [email protected]

I stayed at a motel in Okoboji while working at the Clay County Fair. I was surprised to see that the Iowa DOT had planted aronia berries in the west road ditch just north of Spencer on Hwy 71. A solid mile of aronia berries planted 3 feet apart and fully laden with ripe berries. There was also a row of what looked like currants planted right behind them. The currants has no crop. Some animal(s) or human(s) must have helped themselves.
