San Luis Obispo County Celebrates California Wine MontSeptember is California Wine Month, and

that makes it a fine time to enjoy a glass ofCalifornia wine and a visit to wine country.September is harvest time in California and

California Wine Month celebrates the statesideal climate for wine, beautiful wine countrylandscape, our talented and ingenious wine-making families, our celebrated lifestyle andcuisine, and our commitment to sustain-ability and the environment.

2009 is the fifth consecutive year that Cali-fornia Wine Month will be celebrated inSeptember. California wine is important toCalifornias economy, as the state is the fourthlargest wine producer in the world, makes 90percent of American wine and is responsible

for $18.5 billion in retail wine sales in theU.S. California Wine Month is a campaigncoordinated by Wine Institute and its morethan 1,000 California wineries and affiliatedbusinesses.

Savor San Luis Obispo County WinesDuring California Wine Month

Paso Robles wine grape growing regionsclimate is perfect for the production of award-winning premium wines. A day of winetasting and touring begins with a scenic drivealong the country roads. The rolling hills and

rural setting make for a truly authentic winecountry experience. Guests will discover anarray of wineries many family owned andoperated with the owner or winemakergreeting you upon arrival. Pack your picniclunch to enjoy on the winery grounds, chatwith the winemaker, and explore Californias

fastest growing wine region. A long growingseason of warm days and cool evenings giverise to vibrantly ripened fruit with dynamicflavor that translate beautifully in your glassof Paso Robles wine. The San Luis Obispo wine region hasearned worldwide recognition and respect forthe exceptional quality of wine grapes

produced in this ideal viticultural area. Thearea includes the Edna Valley, the ArroyoGrande Valley, the Avila Valley and Nipomo. The climate and soils have been proven toprovide the perfect environment for growingand producing ultra premium quality wines.Due to the unique geography of area, thevalleys have east-west orientations and aredistinguished by the extensive maritime influ-ence on the climate and soil. The soils aredominated by marine deposits left millions ofyears ago when the valleys were under water.

Loam and clay topsoil overlay calcareousmarine deposits promoting complex flavors. The climate is tempered by marine air flowingdirectly into the valley from the Pacific Ocean. This cooling influence creates an unusuallylong growing season resulting in greatly

intensified varietal flavors. All of thelements produce wine grapes and winescomplex flavors and intensity found onlythe worlds greatest wine regions.

WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK | WINE COUNTRY NEW

    www.WineCountryThisWeek.com

    by Mark Storer

Jason Westfall was excited by what he saw in Paso Robles. The

Long Beach, CA native had been visiting the wine region for some timewith friends and was fascinated with the vineyards, the wineries andthe people. Its really a great place and Ive come to love it so much, the 37-year-old said.

But what struck Westfall, the entrepreneur, was that there was alsoa unique business opportunity. Wed ridden in limos and we werentreally happy with that experience, he says. We wanted flexibility andfreedom. When youre in a limo, even if youre at the winery, the clockis running the whole time and its a lot of money that you could beotherwise spending on the wines.

So, Westfall, unhappy with the direction of his music merchan-

dising business in Southern California, came up withan idea and shared it with his friend and partnerRicky Fernandez. From their conversations, TheWine Line was born.

We officially launched in February but offeredcomplimentary service from September throughNovember as part of my research and business plan-ning last year to make sure we do it right. Theycertainly have.

Operating two Dodge Sprinter nine passenger vans, The Wine Linewill pick you up at your accommodations and then drop you off at anyone of 23 wineries in its system. Once you reach the first winery, the

driver will take you in to meet the winerys tasting room crew and giveyou a brief background on the winery. The bus will then go out on itsroute and comes back every 40 minutes, says Westfall. You can stayat a winery as long as you want and visit as many as time permits. The vans are equipped with a cooler and the driver will carry yourpurchases and store them for you.

The price for the service is $39.95 per customer and at that rate, itsa veritable steal. Professionals do the driving and they know the lay ofthe land and, most importantly, who have not been wine tasting allday.

Were working toward growing the loops and eventually, customers will be able to to accommodate east, west and Far Out Westwineries with a common stop for each loop at the downtown PasoRobles park, says Westfall.

Its all about flexibility, says Westfall. We want people to enjoythe wine country and not have to worry about the rest, he says.

Wineries arent the only ones who are thinking about sustainablepractices these days, either. Were eventually going to manufactureour own bio-diesel for the vans, says Westfall. That will take sometime to get things rolling, so right now were purchasing bio-dieselfrom J.B. Dewar company in San Luis Obispo.

Right now, The Wine Line is only booking for Thursdays through

Saturdays, but are available for possible Wait Listlarge parties of 8 or more Monday, Tuesday a

Wednesday. For more information, The Wine Lcan be found at www.hoponthewineline.com or ycan reach Jason and the Wine Line crew at 888

The day Marv Kohlman picked up a handful of barrel stavesfrom a local barrel seller, he wasnt quite sure what he was going todo with them. A tennis court builder, Marv has spent the last

decade building structures for a variety ofsports venues. But when he saw the rawbeauty of the barrel wood, he knew heneeded to explore the possibilities. And soCalifornia Barrel Crafts was born.

Marv took the staves home, sanding andrefinishing them, and carefully exploring thecurves and character of the wood. His firstcreation was a wine cart, framed in antiquebronze, with a sturdy butcher block top, glass rack above and sanded and stained staves serving as bottlerack below. Then he began to tinker with the finishes and mate-rials, eventually developing a full suite of handmade wine cartsavailable for $595 and up.

master chef, catering many high-end winemaker dinners andteaching gourmet cooking classes throughout the region. But fewknow him as a painter. When Marv showed Andre the things he

was building, Andre was immediately taken. The duo have created a collection of single and double-sided pieces featuring vineyard and wine motifs. The paintings are donon either the convex or concave side of the staves (or both) in arange of sizes. The collection has been selling at wine eventsaround the state to great response.

These are truly one-of-a-kind pieces, said Marv. They arentmass produced. The canvases are built by hand here in wine

Joey Arnold wasnt born into a winery family, but at times, he feels

like he was. The Arnolds are fifth-generation residents of the Central

Coast and have farmed the area for at least that long.

Steve Arnold, Joeys dad, was looking for a way to get his teenaged

kids, Joey and his sister Michelle, more involved with the farm. So, he

planted a vineyard on the familys cattle and hay farm and asked the

kids to take care of it. Little did they know that it would become apassion that drove them to create Pozo Valley Winery and now, 15

years later, with a Central Coast tasting room and a commitment to

family run, hand-crafted wines, Pozo Valley is attracting more atten-

    tion.

I got a degree from Cal Poly (San Luis Obispo), says Arnold. The

rest I just learned as I went along. As a teenager, Joey began to learn

the rhythms of the vineyard and experimented with what worked and

what didnt. He had no idea that hed become a winemaker and

attached to the land on which he grew up.

Pozo Valley Winery doesnt have any employees, its very much a

family business. Michelle and her husband run the business and our

parents are really involved, says Arnold. My wife works the tasting

room and somehow, we make it all work.

Arnold is still finding his style. The 32 acres of vineyards east of

Santa Margarita yield beautiful fruit and for years, the Arnolds were

selling it to various winemakers including the Mondavi family. They

still sell fruit but Arnold says hed like to keep more of it. I want to

get to a point where I can work with all of our fruit, certainly, he

commented. Right now, Pozo Valley produces some 2000 cases a year

of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel. We tried planting

some Viognier, but it didnt take as well as we wanted. Well try that

    again soon, he says.

We try to let the vineyards do the work, says Arnold. We still

some chemicals for pests and weeds, but were moving away fr

that. Arnold says that he is moving the vineyards toward sustaina

practices and the results are promising.

With small production and keeping the winery in the fami

Pozo Valley even distributes through family members. Were rep

sented by San Andreas West and were related to someone ther

know, Arnold laughs. With a smattering of local restaurants and ev

a distributor in the Fresno/Visalia area, Pozo Valley is continuing

    grow in the right direction.

Pozo Valleys tasting room is located on Main Street in Sa

Margarita where an Old West feel dominates the dcor. Indeed, p

Arnolds wife Jessica has a baby on the way and his sister Mich

had a baby in February of this year. After all, says Arnold, we h

to have someone to take over for us when we retire.

The Pozo Valley tasting room hours are: Friday through Sun

WINERY FEATURE | WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK

    by Dave Wilcox

Thirty years ago Gary Eberle bottled thefirst vintage of wine under a label bearing hisname a 1979 Cabernet Sauvignon a mile-stone memorable because of the impactEberle has had on the emergence of PasoRobles as a world-class wine region.

So what is the winery doing to mark thismomentous occasion?

Nothing special. Wait, scratch that. ToEberle, who is one of a handful of genuinepioneers in the region, having people enjoyhis wine is always special.

Every day here is a celebration, he said.Eberle warmly welcomes visitors to the

winery he established in 1984, five years afterbottling the first Eberle Cabernet Sauvignonwhile still working with Estrella River Winery(which is now Meridian Vineyards).

The wine produced by Eberle in those earlyyears bore the appellation San Luis ObispoCounty, because it wasnt until 1983 the

same year he broke ground on his winery that he helped establish the Paso Robles AVA.

If Eberle isnt the first person to tout PasoRobless potential for producing extraordinarygrapes Im not the guy who discoveredPaso, he is quick to note his story isthreaded throughout the regions last fourdecades.

Along with York Mountain Winery, Pesentiand Hoffman Mountain Ranch Winery,Estrella River Winery forged the path that, in

the last decade, saw a virtual explosion in thenumber of wineries established in PasoRobles.

Eberles own path from the working classstreets of Pittsburgh to the bucolic rolling hillsalong Californias Central Coast is one shapedby some interesting twists. He attended PennState University and played defensivelineman for legendary football coach JoePaterno. It was Paterno, said Eberle, who

prodded him to realize his potential not juston the field, but as a student studying biology. He graduated from Penn State and began

pursuing a graduate degree in cellulargenetics at Louisiana State University. Eberlehad developed a love of opera as a teen andone of his professors at LSU shared thatpassion. The professor also happened toenjoy fine Bordeaux wines.

The combination of opera, fine food andwine coalesced into a moment Eberle said ledto his decision to hop a plane for California

specifically, UC Davis.I cannot tell you what exactly he pouredme, said Eberle. All great wine epiphaniescome not just because of the wine, butbecause of the atmosphere at the time.

Eberle not only wanted to become a wine-maker, he was especially intrigued byCabernet Sauvignon.

I just love Cabernet, he said. Its thereason I got into the wine business.

While at Davis, Eberle recalled, at least

three of his professors were really enthastic about the potential of Paso Robleproduce red wine. Eberle concurred, headed south in 1973 to help estabEstrella River.

Eberle and Cliff Giacobine planted acres of vineyards in the early 197including the first commercial acreageSyrah in the state, and established EstrRiver Winery. It was the largest winery in

area (its now Meridian Vineyards.)Ultimately, though, Eberle wanted his owinery, one that would focus on producpremium red wines.

The boom in wineries established in PRobles and its reputation for producworld-class wines is something Ebanticipated. In fact, he said, he expected ihappen at least a decade or so earlier thaoccurred.

It looked to me like it was poisedexplode, he recalled.

But, he said, the white wine revolutiwhich saw consumers demand for wwines increase dramatically stalled the expsion.

Ultimately, though, Eberle said the quaof the regions vineyards gained some wdeserved attention. Eberle has welcomedincreased number wineries.

I dont look at any winery in Paso Robas competition. Im going to get the custowho comes here for other wineries, as wel

those who come to visit my winery. My competition is outside Paso.Indeed, conversations with winemakers who are relative

newcomers to Paso often include comments about the camaraderieamong wineries, with many crediting Eberle as helping out whenneeded.

Eberle expects additional wineries in the Paso region, despite thedown economy.I think youre going to see more wineries coming in because

theres good fruit here. But it will be at a much slower pace.Eberles own winery continues to thrive, remaining one of the most

honored in the state.Cabernet Sauvignon remains the flagship varietal, but Eberles

current releases include an array of varietals, including an 2008 EstateChardonnay, a 2008 Viognier from the winerys Mill Road vineyard, and a 2006 Syrah/Cabernet Sauvignon blend.

Also available is an exceptional 2003 Reserve Estate CabernetSauvignon, a release that only occurs for exceptional vintages. Eberle

doesnt anticipate another reserve release until 2012.Eberle Winerys tasting room is one of the regions most popular, with tours of the wine caves and picnicking on a deck overlooking thevineyards creating a unique experience.

During the summer months through September, the tasting roomis open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. From October through March it closesan hour earlier. The winery is located at 3810 Highway 46 East.Contact the winery at (805) 238-9607, or visit its website atwww.eberlewinery.com.

If you are a fan of the arts and crafts movement, or more specifi-cally, the understated beauty of Greene Brothers homes then a visit toCasa Barranca will be more of a pilgrimage for you than a simple driveout to Ojai for a pleasant day of wine tasting. This stately home is one

of the very finest examples of the Greene Brothers vision, having beenkept in its pristine and unadulterated state. That it is on the groundsof an outstanding winery is just icing on the cake.

The Greene Brothers would have, undoubtedly, considered CasaBarranca Certified Organic Winery as the perfect custodian of thehouse. With their commitment to organic winemaking and livinggently on the land, Casa Barranca optimizes the philosophy of the arts

and crafts movement. Begun during the Victorian age, the arts and crafts move-ment called for a return to small, craftsmans workshops where workers

could regain the joy of handcraftingwares that were both useful and beau-tiful. They sought to widen the definitionof Art, declaring that everyday objectscould and should be made as upliftingand lovely as a costly painting or sculp-ture. The movement called for a return to

the simple life. However, such a life did not require self-denial, rather a return to physical, mental and spiritual balance, an avoidaof excess and social striving, and an enjoyment of Natures bounNature was, in fact, the ultimate source of inspiration.

The spirit of the Greene Brothers dream is truly recognizable in carefully handcrafted wines of Casa Barranca. Our boutique wineshandcrafted in our century-old underground stone winery whereuse gravity to rack our wines. We are committed to employing wimaking practices without the use of toxic solvents and cleaners. Owinery is powered by solar electricity and we grow and purch

The dedicated keepers of these standards of craftsmanship apurity have turned their passion into truly beautiful wines that refthe gentle hands that produced them. At the organic boutique winof Casa Barranca, we employ the finest Old World traditions w

appropriate contemporary tools and techniques to handcraft extraor-dinary wine. We believe in organic, natural, and sustainable practicesas we continue to strive for an optimal balance in our approach towine making. Because we are committed to the health and vitality ofour bodies and planet, we make our wines from organic grapes, whichhave either a low level of sulfites (made with organic grapes), or nosulfites added (organic wine). In much the same way that fresh-picked produce at your local organic farmers market makes for thetastiest gourmet delights, we firmly believe in the value of using organ-ically grown grapes to craft the finest boutique wines. We use natural, organic nutrients (like the squeezed grape matter left over afterpressing) to fertilize our vines, which helps us to make the ultimate inboutique wines made from organic grapes.

Simply using organically grown grapes wasnt enough for thecreators of Casa Barranca Winery. They also took great lengths to

utilize the natural features of the land to help them create great wine. Our winery facility is the first certified organic winery on the CentralCoast. It was converted from a century-old subterranean stone watercistern, which we excavated 15 feet down one side, and cut throughtwo feet of stone wall to gain access. In building the tiered shelvingsystem in the winery for our gravity racking protocol, we used localcraftsmen who employed Old World skills like mortis and tenon, and scarf joinery, and who finished the walls in a board and battenstyle. Our press hopper (the funnel we use to dump the fermentedgrapes into the press) is crafted of oak and is inspired by Greene &Greene design. Both the estate and winery draw their water from anartesian spring and are powered by solar energy.

Even their day to day life reflects the simplicity of the arts and craftsmovement. We sweeten our day with honey from our apiary.
