A Wine Country Experience to RememberSaddle up to vineyards and nature in Sonoma

L ast spring, after years of leading horseback tours in Napa and Sonoma Valley state parks, Triple Creek Horse Outfit moved its string of gentle, well-trained, well-loved

horses to one of the oldest, largest and most beautiful private estates in Northern California.

Kunde Family Estate grows 20 kinds of premium wine grapes and has an award-winning tasting room on a 1,850-acre ranch in the heart of the Sonoma Valley. Triple Creek riders see vineyards, wildlife, forests, lakes, meadows and champion Hereford cattle up close and from a perspective few wine country visitors experience, from mountain tops to valley floors. The Kunde ranch is also the site of the stone Dunfillan Winery ruins, where California’s first varietally labeled Cabernet was crafted and bottled, and is now a popular site for weddings and movie shoots.

Guests who have never been on a horse before as well as expert equestrians enjoy their horseback tours with experienced guides. “Pony” rides are available for children, and rides for groups are a specialty. Tours go out year-round, weather permitting, and are by reservation only.

‘Once you’ve been here, you’ll understand’Distinctive wines in an exquisite setting

F ounded in 1973, Chateau St. Jean, with its gracious style, elegant architecture, and lush gardens, is the quintessential Sonoma winery. Visitors can enjoy a

tasting flight in our modern visitor center or a reserve wine tasting flight in the chateau, or on the patio, before pic-nicking on our meticulously manicured lawn. A variety of private tasting seminars are also offered. The winemaking estate, including the historic chateau and visitor center, is located at the foot of Sugarloaf Ridge in the Sonoma Valley near Kenwood.

Long recognized as a leader in Single Vineyard Desig-nated wines, Chateau St. Jean has also won acclaim for its blends and reserve wines. In 1999, it was the first Sonoma winery to be presented the prestigious “Wine of the Year” award by Wine Spectator magazine for the 1996 Cinq Cépages Cabernet Sauvignon, a Bordeaux-style blend of “five variet-ies.” Three years later, the 1999 vintage won “No. 2 Wine of the Year” from Wine Spectator.

Winemaker Margo Van Staaveren has been a part of the winemaking team for an amazing 32 harvests. During her tenure, Margo has played a pivotal role in every facet of the winemaking process and was named 2008’s “Winemaker of

the Year” by Wine Enthusiast Magazine. She makes the final decisions involving blend and style to produce consistently high-quality luxury wines that impress the most discerning palates.

Fine Wines...and So Much MoreA winery to suit the connoisseur as well as the neophyte

“L ike visual arts and music, wine and food speak to the heart,” says Margrit Biever Mondavi, the visionary behind Robert Mondavi Winery’s cultural affairs

department. The cultural and culinary art programs at the winery have become a showplace for painters, sculptors, photographers, musicians and great chefs from around the world.

Robert Mondavi Winery was one of the first to establish extensive tours and tastings to educate the public about wine. Today, with a wide variety of tours and experiences, the winery has something to offer wine novices and enthusiasts alike.

Since the winery opened in 1966, its dining room, the Vine-yard Room, has emphasized simple, flavorful recipes made from the freshest seasonal ingredients. Today, Chef Jeff Mosher carries on that tradition by creating culinary masterpieces form the win-ery garden and providing world-class wine and food experiences. World-renowned chefs, including Jacques Pepin, Julia Child and Alice Waters, have cooked in the Vineyard Room over the years. The winery’s permanent art collection includes an extensive array of bronze and marble sculptures by artist Beniamino Bufano, as well as paintings and photography by Napa Valley artists.
