    Moved to Melbourne November 2, 1857

    Married Martha Steele in 1863

    Moved to Corowa in 1875, planted first vines in 1877

    Became leading member of Corowa Wine and Fruit

    Growers Association

    Died in 1902

    Viticulture

    McWilliams Wines received a GREEN rating inGreenpeaces inaugural 2009 Australia Pacific Guide toAlcoholic Drinks:

    1) Planting and cultivation of selected grasses between rows

    in the vineyards2) Mulching and the planting of vegetation within and

    around vineyard

    3) Composts are used

    4) Inter-row management of slash and drop

    *Awarded the Harden Murrumburrah Landcare Award fordevelopment of environmentally sensitive viticulturalpractices.

    Water

    1) Developing Tyrian, a grape varietal especially bred to

    suit the warmer Australian climate and requiring 10

    percent less water than other mainstream varietals.

    McWilliams Wines planted a small test block of the

    varietal in 1995 and today has more than 50 hectares in

    full production.

    2) Converted its vineyard supplementary water system to a

    drip system3) All supplementary water, via drip, is monitored via

    capacitance probes to ensure no excess water is passed

    beyond the root zone to potentially enter the water table

    Packagaing

    1) Transitioning to retail-ready packaging as well aseliminating dividers from many of its shippers toreduce waste

    2) In 2009, the winery launched Australias first widelyavailable Sparkling wine featuring Zork, aninnovative new Sparkling wine closure which is 100percent recyclable

    3) Converted a significant portion of its 187ml bottlesfrom glass to the lighter-weight, recyclable PETpackaging

    components are passed on to another supplier for

    reuse in second hand cartons

    2) Shrink wrap plastic off bottle pallets is baled andrecycled
