Services

Well, this one is arguable. Many pros preach service tweaking as the end all of

tweaks, and Windows does have a lot of services (140 to be exact). However, agood portion of them are set to manual or disabled by default. Manual will onlystart the service when the operating system thinks it needs to use thatprogram.

However, Windows does have a lot of services set to Automatic by default thatare not needed for many people. Granted, they are usually sleeping, not usingany CPU, and if they use memory, they usually get paged out to disk prettyfast. But, regardless, it is fairly quick to do, and will gain you someimprovement.

Accessing services allows you to access programs that are running in thebackground and while some are useful, there is quite a few that you couldprobably live without. And obviously turning these off will free up a lot of yourPC's resources like the CPU and the Ram. It'll also speed up your boot timeswhich can only be a good thing.

Here's how to get to services:

1. Go to start and type in

Services.msc into your Windowssearch bar and select it.

2. Now you should be presented with the screen below. What thisbasically shows you is all the programs running in your operating system.Some are good, some are not and some damn right essential so becareful!

The processesthat are Started

in the Statussection are theones that are

running right nowand are using yoursystem's resources.

So try to deactivatethese ones for extraperformance.

3. All you have to do is double click on the ones you don't want and clickon the menu next to Startup type.

WARNING!Below I've created a chart of every service running in Windows. I've given youthe default settings for each Windows package and a little description of eachservice to help you decide if you need it or not.. I've also given a tweakedmode that I use and this works for me very well.

However if you do decide to use my tweaked setting you do so at your own

risk. What necessary works for my computer might not work for yoursso please take a care when altering the services.

If your unsure I would set-up a system restore so if anything does go wrong,you can enter Windows in safe mode and restore services to how you had itbefore the changes.

For those who aren't sure how to set-up a system restore, this is how to doit...

1. Now to create a restore point Simply go to start and go to controlpanel.

2. Once your in the Control Panel go to Back up your computer.

3. Then in the top left corner click on Create a restore point or changesettings.

referring to the Windows sphere.
