Welcome to the Wimbledon International Music Festival 2017, our ninth seasonI always look forward to the challenge of putting together a new season of events reflecting the international spirit and language of music.

The 2017 Festival theme, “Musical Capitals”, provides considerable scope for this.
Johann Sebastian Bach, Georg Philipp Telemann, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Clara and Robert Schumann, Richard Wagner, Gustav Mahler, Max Reger and Edvard Grieg are just some among the 500 composers to have lived in Leipzig. We welcome back the Academy Choir and Baroque Players, under their new conductor Matthew Best, in Bach’s Mass in B minor.
The roll call of composers associated with St. Petersburg includes Mussorgsky, Borodin, Rachmaninov, Glazunov, Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Glinka, Balakirev, Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Arensky, and Prokofiev, several of whom are featured in the programme given by the Soloists of the Russian Virtuosi of Europe.
Russian pianist Yevgeny Sudbin, hailed by the Daily Telegraph as “one of the greatest pianists of the 21st century” brings music from Moscow. One of France’s most lauded string quartets, Quatuor Diotima, features the music of Paris. The Hungarian guitar duo, the Katona Twins, returns to the festival with music from Madrid.
The celebrated Russian violinist Viktoria Mullova has fallen in love with Rio de Janeiro, and the exciting Venezuelan pianist Sergio Tiempo brings the rhythms and colour of the South American capitals. The Schubert Ensemble, in its final season, serves a double helping of Viennese greats, with a themed dinner in between. The allure of America comes with Claire Martin and ‘Hollywood Romance’, while Willard White and Counterpoise base their programme on New York and the
Deep South. The Red Priest is naturally drawn to the composers of Venice, while Tenebrae will contrast the sacred music of London and Rome.
The Festival opens in London, with a work based on the war poems of Robert Graves (born and partly educated in Wimbledon) featuring the Wimbledon-based Sonoro, and closes with Haydn’s ‘London Symphony’ performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra.
Also visiting Wimbledon in November are the Sacconi Quartet, the Wihan Quartet from the Czech Republic, and the brilliant Swedish virtuoso Håken Hardenberger, “The best trumpet player in the galaxy” The Times

Viktoria Mullova violin with MATTHEW BARLEy cello, CARIOCA FREITAS guitar, LUIS GUELLO and PAUL CLARVIS percussion ‘Stradivarius in Rio’ is Mullova’s latest venture into creative contemporary music, inspired by her love of Brazilian songs by composers such as Antônio Carlos Jobim, Caetano Veloso, Marisa Monte, Zequinha de Abreu, and Cláudio Nucci.
What wins out here is Mullova’s sheer dancing virtuosity in Tico Tico and Brasileirinho - these are as dazzling as the sights and sounds of Brazil Sir Nicholas Kenyon, The Observer
This is music like a warm breeze with an easygoing lyricism at its heart... There’s a gentle, bittersweet quality in Tom Jobim tracks but a real energy in Brasileirinho, in which Mullova’s bow dances across the strings with virtuosity and panache few could match Simon Broughton, Evening Standard

TenebraeThe award-winning choir Tenebrae, under its Director Nigel Short, is one of the world’s leading vocal ensembles renowned for its beauty of sound and precision.

As First Prize and Audience Prize Winner of the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition 2015, the Linos Piano Trio has achieved recognition as an extremely dynamic and creative young chamber ensemble.
In 2014 the trio was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Albert and Eugene Frost Prize for an outstanding young ensemble.
The Trio has just been appointed as Ensemble in Residence at Trinity Laban.

I have been watching Christina McMaster’s career developing for the last three years, since her Pinks and Blues evening at St James Theatre, and admired both her bold programming and vivid performances. I could quite imagine why she chose to study with the celebrated Joanna MacGregor.
In this lunchtime concert she will perform: Debussy’s first book of Etudes Works by Meredith Monk and Phillip Glass
Christina has recently been appointed as Associate of the Royal Academy of Music for her significant contribution to the music industry.

SEATING PLANS & BOOKING INFORMATION
This year we are moving to a new, secure, online box office system with TicketSource.
When booking online, tickets can be printed at home as e-tickets, or you may choose to have them sent to you via post for an additional £1.50 postage fee.
For those who prefer to book by telephone you will be pleased to know that the telephone booking line is open daily from Monday to Friday 9.00am to 7.00pm (excluding bank holidays) and Saturdays 9.00am to 5.00pm telephone number 0333 666 3366.
Customers choosing to use the telephone service will pay the same rate as someone booking online and choosing to receive “standard post” tickets i.e. tickets + £1.50 booking fee (per transaction) + the standard post rate of £1.50.
Tickets for telephone bookings received more than three working days before the event may be dispatched by post, or email. Tickets for telephone bookings received less than four working days before the event will be sent to the customer as an e-ticket to their email address. Customers without email will be supplied with their booking confirmation number which will be required, along with some form of identification, for admission at the door.
