Young Men Be Careful. Young men should make promises
with deliberation and sincerity. One of the important cases called for trial in the late term of the district court at New Ulm, was that of Miss Hazel C. Barnes vs. Theo. J. Vollmer. The young lady thought to recover $5,000, as a balm to heal her lacerated heart because the young man had neglected to fulfill his promise to marry her. The defendant's letters to the plaintiff were exhibits in court. In them he repeatedly avowed his love for her and by them she considered his promise irrevocable. He endeivored in court to evade responsibility for his tender utterances by saying he did not mean anything by,his courtship of the young lady, even though he had given her an engagement ring. The jury awarded the young lady damages in the sum' of $4,000.—Springfield Ad vance.
