inspiration:
where the forest meets the prairie
Minnesota is unique in that it is home to three of the worlds major ecoregions (prairie, deciduous forest, andmixed forest) with very little elevation change. Willmar sits at the ecotone between two of these: the prairieand deciduous forest.
This idea abstracts the forms of trees and prairie plants, allowing each to be affected by the ever-present winds. The fence / rail is a collection of short rods (prairie poles) ranging from 2 feet to 4 feet in height. Springsembedded in the poles allow them to wiggle in the wind. The column is a grove of trees made from metalrods, like the prairie poles. Hanging from the higher branches are bright metal leaves that flash in the wind.
