In 1995 the airlines were starting to cut our commissions, and took us to $0 in March 2002, giving less than 24 hours notice! John took over a lot of the administration in October 1996.

Perhaps the most traumatic year for our industry was 2001. First was the foot and mouth outbreak in the U.K., followed by September 11. We all still remember exactly what we were doing that fateful morning. In the latter part of 2002 we started to some turnaround, but then we had the outbreak of SARS in Asia.

We celebrated big time when the airlines started sending tickets via a teletype printer, which we had to encase in a wooden box to lower the noise. We later became fully automated with our first airline booking system, SABRE. In 1998, John and I purchased our office space at 1314 NW Irving St., moving into the office in February 1999, which has been home ever since. The staff thought we had gone crazy! The Pearl was certainly not the Pearl of 2017! We moved offices, changed our booking system from SABRE to AMADEUS and added a new phone system — all over one weekend! But we survived and no one had a nervous break-down!

A LOT OF CHANGES – I cannot imagine hand writing tickets in today’s fast-paced travel industry.

We have a lot to celebrate on December 3rd. It has taken an extended family to bring us successfully from August 7, 1977 to December 2017. That family includes, staff, clients and vendors. Please join us sometime during the day to celebrate with us — you have been part of the 40-year ride! See the schedule and details on page 3. We just ask one favor: as we are catering throughout the day and do not want to run out of food or drink, please RSVP before Monday November 27. See you on the 3rd!

Un-Cruise

Apparently bears don’t sleep the whole time they’re hibernating. This means that they don’t need to eat or drink while in their wintry den. But they’ll venture out, if necessary. During hibernation, their body temperature lowers 8-12 degrees, and they break down fat stores for energy so they don’t become weak. And, they move around, kind of like a resting dog. Get up, change position, and find a new comfortable spot. When they emerge from their dens in springtime, bears focus on replenishment and make for the shoreline to feast.

THINK OF JOINING BRUCE & MARY LOU MATE WHEN THEY SAIL TO ALASKA IN 2019 – DATES TO BE DETERMINED. Their February 24, 2018 tip to Baja is sold out. Bruce & Mary Lou will be around on December 3, along with a representative from Un-Cruise. Do stop by to meet them.

Several of our staff have firsthand knowledge of the Un-Cruise product. Barbara has cruised with them in both Alaska and Baja. Racheal was on a Baja cruise in December 2017 and Pam is going to take the December 30, 2017 Baja cruise. It’s a great way to celebrate the New Year, and at this time there is still space available on this departure! If interested, call Pam to discuss.

Alaska AwakeningMy favorite time of year. April and May. Alaska awakens from its winter slumber—migrating whales, bears, northern lights. The early bird catches the worm, so they say.

Star Clippers Cruises Plan a Unique Visit to Europe or Asia

with Star Clippers and Avanti DestinationsIntroducing unique ways to see Europe and Asia! This winter think about combining a Star Clippers Cruise in Asia with an

land excursion in Thailand and Singapore provided by Avanti Destinations. If your time allows, considering booking a visit to

Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos even Myanmar or Hong Kong through Avanti Destinations.

Avanti Destinations, with whom we have worked for 35 years, ventured into the Asian market in 2015. In 2017, at a Travel

Industry Banquet, they were voted Top Asian Tour Operator. Quite a feat to accomplish in such a short period of time!

If Europe is on your travel horizon, Star Clippers offer many unique cruises throughout European waters, ranging from a

4-night cruise up to a “grand-voyage” of 14 nights. Avanti Destinations’ first venture was into the European market some 35

years ago. Willamette has worked with Avanti since their founding. In 1990, when they chartered the Concorde from London

to Portland round trip, we were honored to be the biggest seller of this unique trip. We still remember the Concorde’s arrival

on a Friday evening at PDX — it caused quite a traffic jam as it did a fly by before landing! With so much experience in Europe,

Avanti is well equipped to combine land arrangements with a Star Clippers cruise.

BOTH STAR CLIPPERS & AVANTI DESTINATIONS WILL HAVE STAFF ON HAND DECEMBER 30.

VIKING RIVER & OCEAN CRUISES

Nancy, Barbara and Christina have sailed with Viking on the Danube; Cathy sailed on the Rhine in August, and as we go to print Pam is sailing on the Rhine between Amsterdam & Basel and meeting travelers from Astoria! Yes, the world is indeed a small place. Christina & John have cruised on the Tulip & Windmills itinerary. Pam has done the China itinerary with Viking Cruise. Nancy, in October, cruised between New York and San Juan on one of the Viking Ocean ships and returned with rave reviews about the venture. Because of our past productivity with Viking, in 2018 the rest of the Willamette staff should get to experience a Viking River Cruise so we will all have firsthand experience of their river cruises. In 2017 Viking added two new cruise itineraries: Paris to the Swiss Alps, a 12-day excursion between Zurich and Paris; and the Elegant Elbe, a 10-day excursion between Berlin and Prague. At our Open House, we expect Viking to have new and exciting 2018 itineraries to share with you.

REGENT SEVEN SEAS CRUISES

In January, between snow and ice storms, Nancy make a quick trip to Los Angeles where she was able to cruise to “nowhere” on board the brand new Seven Seas Explorer. The ship debuted in 2016, and was voted by Cruise Critic U.S. Editors the best new luxury ship that year. The critic stated she loved the ambiance and décor of the Explorer. Several of you have already sailed on her, and some of you are repeating the experience in 2018. Regent’s is a truly a fully inclusive product; business class air from international gateway; free unlimited shore excursions; free one-night pre-cruise hotel package; free unlimited beverages including wine & spirits; open bars and lounges with mini-bar replenished daily in your suite; included prepaid gratuities; free admission into specialty restaurants; transfer between airport/ship; unlimited wi-fi and on select voyages a 3-night land program. You can almost leave your credit card at home!

CELEBRITY CRUISES

We do not expect many of you realize that Celebrity Cruises has a fleet of 3 small ships based in the Galapagos Islands. Celebrity Xpedition – an award-winning 100-guest mega yacht, the Celebrity Xperience, with just 24 stylist staterooms, and a unique 8 cabin catamaran, Celebrity Xploration, which would be amazing for a private cruise for an extended family or friends group. Our faithful and loyal rep, Marilee Syme has firsthand knowledge of their wonderful offerings, and will be at the Open House to share her experience with you. Naturally, she has also sailed on many of their mainstream cruises – which include 12 ships covering 7 continents, and 280 destinations in 75 countries! Do stop in and meet Marilee on December 3rd.

HOLLAND AMERICA

This company certainly has a longer history than Willamette! Holland America was founded in 1873 making them almost a 150 years old! They certainly have seen a lot of changes in a 150 years, an evolution from ships being utilitarian means of transportation to get from point A to B, to being a destination for a vacation that happens to include visiting exciting areas of the world. Their ships have kept pace with the modern market, without losing the classic Holland America style. On board, enrichment awaits, including the BBC Earth Experiences, showing their guests the natural world as never before, as well as Destination Guides, in partnership with AFAR. In April 2016, they welcomed ms Koningsdam to their fleet and in fall 2018 will welcome her sister ship, ms Nieuw Statendam. We hope you’ll stop by at out Open House and say hello to their representative (who is not 150 years old!)

We are thrilled that our reps of the following cruise lines will be at the Open House. Each of the representatives of these great companies have been supportive of Willamette Intl. Travel

for decades, and have listened to our concerns during that time. We sell these lines with great confidence.

Guest SpeakersSTANLEY KARIITHI – ORIGIN’S GUIDE FROM KENYA.

Africa often feels like tourism’s best-kept secret. Despite being the world’s second largest continent, overflowing with incredible assets including iconic wildlife, cutting-edge culture and award-winning luxury hotels, Africa has yet to emerge on the international scene as a serious top contender.

For those that have been to East or Southern Africa you know that Africa is definitely the “best-kept” secret and it is easy to become an African junky! It never ceases to amaze, to excite. Every day, maybe every hour, brings a new experience — definitely no two days are alike.

Your safari guide makes the trip, and all the guides at Origins have a high reputation for being experts in their field and being able to communicate this knowledge to those they travel with. They give well-versed information on a variety of different subjects, from landscape and plants to wildlife, bird life and cultural heritage. Origin guides in Kenya are all active members of KPSGA (Kenya Professional Guides).

Guides are responsible for your safety day in day out. They know where to find the animals, knowing their behavior. They are also expert drivers — it never ceases to amaze us when out on safari, how they find their way back to the camp when there are no road signs. They follow instructions from other guides on where to find something exciting out in the bush, with only trees, large termit mounds and maybe a hill or two as guidelines. They know when it is safe to ford a river, to avoid taking the long way around back to the camp. All visitors end up in awe of their knowledge and their skills. They are also great story tellers, fascinating and jovial raconteurs.

We are so excited that Stanley Kariithi, probably one of the most jovial raconteurs there is, is coming from Kenya for our Open House. Come and listen to Stanley tell his tales of growing up in a Kenya village along with his many unique stories about life as a guide. Stanley will be at the Open House all day.

WAILANA KALAMA SMITH – FROM STOCKHOLM

Many of you will remember Wailana, who was an employee with Willamette for three years, before leaving for Iceland. She spent a year there before moving to Stockholm, where she has been living for the last 15 months. Wailana spent a lot of her childhood living abroad, including Saudi Arabia. Wailana is still associated with Willamette, doing all our social media out of Stockholm. Wailana will be telling you about her experiences as a young American living overseas, and will share with you helpful hints on unique things to do in Stockholm, as well as Iceland.

BRUCE & MARY LOU MATE

Many of you traveled with Bruce & Mary Lou to Tahiti back in September 2012, and at the end of February 2018, we will have 51 heading with Bruce & Mary Lou to Baja, California. Bruce has conducted marine mammal research since 1967, including determining the migration routes of sea lions along the west coast of the United States. He has a post doctorate in biochemistry investigating heavy metals and organochlorines in pinnipeds, and has studied marine mammal/fishing conflicts; and VHF telemetry studies of seals and gray whales. He has also been a leader in the development of satellite-monitored radio telemetry for marine mammals. Using this technique, he has tagged and tracked manatees, pilot whales, bottlenose dolphins, white-sided dolphins, gray whales, right whales, bowhead whales, humpback whales, sperm whales, fin whales and blue whales. You will find Bruce not only an interesting but also very entertaining speaker.

Other Open House Events: we will have a choir sometime during the day and perhaps one other guest speaker. A full schedule will be send with acknowledgement of your RSVP.

A Trip Down Memory Lane

Travel Changed MeI grew up in southern Idaho, two days drive from the nearest city. A grade school teacher first sparked my curiosity about the world outside, and World War II taught me the names of faraway places. Years later, with my children mostly grown, I began traveling to distant parts of the world myself, and each time, I returned home a different person.

I was in Beijing in 1979, when China opened up a crack. I cheered seeing the papers fluttering on Democracy Wall. Soon after, the government squashed dissent and sent those brave protestors to prison. I could never again take freedom of speech for granted.

In India, where rivers run thick with sludge, and clean water is more valuable than diamonds, I cringed at the unimaginable poverty in a country where the privileged few are calloused to the suffering of the many. Travel has shown me what happens in countries that do not care for the poor.

I snorkeled the Great Barrier Reef, reveling in its fantastic shapes and Disneyesque colors. Now, a warming ocean has bleached the coral white. Carbon-burning humans have killed a 25 million year-old reef. Travel has shown me a planet in need of saving.

At the Plain of Jars in Laos, unexploded bombs still take limbs and lives of those who stray from designated paths. My Laotian guide said, “We don’t blame you. The war on Cambodia and Laos was secret, so you didn’t know.” He left me alone with all that remained of a village—the blackened body and half-melted face of the Buddha. Travel introduced me to the people left behind when we exited Vietnam. Wars are easy to start and hard to finish.

Spellbound, I listened to an Iranian poet sing the verses of Omar Khayyam; witnessed Tunisian demonstrators topple a dictator; dined on goat meat in a Bedouin tent in Saudi Arabia; conversed with Buddhist monks in Myanmar; and sat with the wife of a Maasai warrior in her mud and cow dung hut in Tanzania. Travel has taught me we are one species with the same basic needs and the same desires for peace and a little beauty in our lives.

Travel has made me more curious, more aware of the rest of the world, and more accepting of differences. Travel in the age of flight is easy. All we need is time, a few dollars, and the courage to step out of our comfort zone and open ourselves to a great wide wonderful world.

Mary Jean Lord, May/June 2017

Here is another “down memory lane” email. Mary Sonnack became a client after meeting our good clients Sally & Bob Landauer on the train between Vancouver & Toronto! Mary lives in Minneapolis. Over the years, Nancy has sent Mary on several trips with Lindblad Expeditions; Sent her to Churchill to see the polar bears; sent her to the remotest parts of Alaska as well as Galapagos and Southern Africa. She is another intrepid travel. “Thank you for your email. I just wanted you to know that TripAdvisor reminds me every month about the wonderful places where Nancy had sent us. I have only written TripAdvisor reviews for 3 lodges, and TripAdvisor just informed me that there have been 8,965 readers. I spend a lot of time writing a review and therefore do not write reviews for other things such as restaurants etc.

The three lodges (that I reviewed for TripAdvisor) are all places where Nancy sent us:

• Churchill Wild (which I read about in your Willamette Update newsletter)

• A lodge in the Galapagos (where Nancy had personally visited)

• A lodge in Alaska (where Nancy had planned a very complicated 3 month trip for us).

When people contact me through TripAdvisor about any of these reviews, I send them Nancy’s contact information. Thanks again for all the memorable trips. AND...it is fun that TripAdvisor reminds me every month.”

With our 40th anniversary coming up, several of you have shared memories with us. Some of you, like Mary Jean Lord, are no longer traveling. Mary Jean took the time to send us the following which she shared with several writer friends. Mary Jean traveled with her younger sister, Lorraine Swisher and her brother in law John Swisher. As you will discover, we sent these three intrepid travelers all over the world, and Christina had the pleasure of personally traveling with them in both East & Southern Africa, as well as Sri Lanka. Mary Jean, thank you for sharing! It was always a pleasure helping the three of you.
