Take advantage of the many things to do in O'Brien County.

Tallgrass prairie areas offer excellent places to hike, bird and wildlife watch or hunt. There are locations for hunting deer, turkey, pheasant and dove. Fish in the deep hollows along the Little Sioux River. Lakes provide areas to ice fish during winter months or to savor summer with a pole in hand. A handicap dock at Mill Creek Park allows easy access for people of all abilities. There are numerous fishing jetties located at several parks. Swimming and boating are also options. Mill Creek and Dog Creek allow only electric motors, but these lakes are also great locations to canoe, kayak or paddleboard.

Conservation education is offered for people of all ages. School groups, civic organizations and the general public enjoy a wide variety of programming. Annual events include the Bald Eagle Watch, Wings and Wetlands Festival, and Historical Fall Festival. Join in activities like monarch tagging, prairie hikes, birding or kayaking. Contact the naturalist to take part in these and other activities.

Spend time with family and friends in one of our campgrounds. Camping is located at four parks throughout the county. Each site includes water and electrical hookups. All sites are available on a first-come/first-serve basis. Experience the joys of camping without the hassle. Large and small camping cabins can be rented for seasonal use at both Mill Creek and Dog Creek. A beautiful, CCCP lodge is available at Mill Creek Park for seasonal use. Reserve the climate controlled building for family gatherings, celebrations or meetings.

Make your reservations for the cabins and lodge up to one calendar year in advance. Call the Conservation Board at 712-295-7200 to begin planning your getaway.

Visit the Prairie Heritage Center as a starting point to explore outdoor recreation and environmental education in O'Brien County. Permanent displays at the center focus on the prairie and our area's history. The main diorama features a full size bison along with mounts of other animals found within the tallgrass prairie. Other displays describe glacial impacts on the land, Mill Creek culture, early settlement history and plants and animals found locally. The lower level of the center holds temporary exhibits as well as an indoor archery range. Other things to do at the center include hiking the trails through the tallgrass prairie, visiting a pioneer cemetery, observing a live bison herd, watching for Bald Eagles and other birds, and fishing or boating on the Little Sioux River.
