Some Statistics about Digital Natives On average digital natives spend the following amount
of time doing these activities before they go to college-
10,000 hours playing video games Over 200,000 emails and instant messages sent and
received Over 100,000 hours talking on cell phones Over 20,000 hours watching T.V. Over 500,000 commercials seen At the very most, 5,000 hours of reading books

What is a wiki? What can it do for me? A wiki is a website that can be edited by others. What can it do for me?
Allows you to communicate with parents and students
Allows you to post documents Allows you to post video Allows discussion Allows you to embed a calendar to keep students
updated about assignments The possibilities are endless!

Creating a Wiki
Go to http://www.wikispaces.com/site/for/teachers
This will allow you to sign up for a wiki that is free of advertisements.

• Create a username and password.
• Enter a valid email address.
• Create a wiki name. This will be your website name. For example: www.roosevelthighschool.wikispaces.com.
• You only need to enter what will come after www and before wikispaces.com
• Select “protected.” This will allow anyone to see your website, but only those who you choose will be able to edit it.
• Check “I certify this is for k-12 education.”

Creating Your Home Page
• This is your home or welcome page.
• Do not create a separate homepage.
• Click on edit on the right and delete all of this writing.
• Type whatever welcome message you want here.

Create a New Page
1. Click on New Page 2. This creates a distinct page from your “home” page and you
can create as many new pages as you want.• For example, you might want to make a new page for
each unit you teach. • Note: New pages will not show up on the left side of
your wiki until you enter content within the page.

1. Choose whatever name you would like for your new page and click on the Create button.

1. Type whatever you want here and click on the Save button.• Reminder: If you do not type anything in the text
section of your new page, Wikispaces will not recognize the new page.

The Editor Toolbar
This is where you can make what you write Bold, Italic, or Underlined.

This is where you go to change the font, size of font, font color, or alignment of the font.

This is where you go to insert links.

Uploading a Document
1. To add an image or file (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) place your cursor where you want the file and click on the insert images and files icon.
2. This page will appear. From here, click the upload files tab.

1. Once you are under the upload file tab, click browse, find the file you want, select it, hit open and then push upload.
2. This will upload it to your insert file page, and you will then need to double-click the file to insert it on your page.
3. When the file inserts into your page (remember you are editing this page, it will look a little funny, but once you save it, the file will look better. • Visual examples are provide
4. Click Save
Double click this file to insert it into your new page.Important: Wherever your cursor is on your new page, that is where the file will go.

To embed a video, click on the embed widget icon and select video from the left.

You will need to open a new window by clicking the Internet Explorer icon so that you can search for the video you want to upload.

After clicking on the video you want, find the embed section to the right of the video, highlight it (it can be pretty long) copy it, and then paste it back on the Wiki.

Right click in this box and paste the embedded code here. Then click Save.

The video should appear on your page. Click Save.

The video now appears on your page. You can simply click play and it will start.

Adding a Calendar
Go to Google’s home page, click on the down arrow next to more and select calendar.

You must create or sign in to your Google account.

Once you have signed in, this is the screen you should see.

Click on the down arrow next to available calendars and select Calendar Settings.

Name your calendar and give it a description and continue filling out all the necessary information. Do not click save.

Click on the share this calendar tab and check the make this calendar public box.

Click back on the calendar details tab and find the embed this calendar section.

Copy the embed code.

Go back to your Wiki and click the edit tab. Once in the edit screen, click on the embed widget icon and select Calendar. Select the Google calendar.

Paste the embedded code into the window and click Save.

It will look like this until you click Save.

Now your calendar is on your page. Whenever you update your Google calendar, it will automatically update on your Wiki.

How to Manage Your Wiki
Click on Manage Wiki

Click on Pages to see a list of your pages and to Delete, rename, or lock the page.
Click on Files to see a listof all of the files you have uploaded. You can also delete files here.

Click on Look and Feel to change the color or style of your wiki.
