The door to the College Chaplaincy is always open and offers support and guidance to students of all faiths and none.

The College has a full-time Chaplain who will assist students throughout their time at the College, as well as a dedicated Chaplaincy team.

Personal Tutors

The needs of our learners always come first. That is why we have a pastoral system in place to give you all the support and professional guidance you need throughout your time here.

At the beginning of term you will be assigned a personal tutor. You will get to know your personal tutor and become a member of a tutor group which meets regularly. Ultimately your tutor will help you settle in and adjust to college life.

Personal Tutors will:

• Help you access any support that you may need

• Offer advice about overcoming any challenges that you may have

HEAD OF STUDIESEach of our Centres has a dedicated Head of Studies who will ensure you receive as much pastoral support as you need to be successful in your studies. This may include help to keep your attendance to a high level or support with developing your study skills to maximise your potential.

Their role is to ensure that high standards are maintained throughout each curriculum area and that all our students enjoy a positive learning experience during their time at College.

Learning Resources Centre

The Learning Resources Centre (LRC) is an impressive educational support service for all students. Each campus is equipped with its own Learning Resources Centre and houses a library providing access to a wide range of books, magazines, newspapers, subject specific publications, DVDs and CDs.

The LRC is equipped with high spec computers providing access to online resources including the College intranet; Office applications; e-books; WiFi access; and Moodle: the College Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). Staff are on hand to help with any enquiries that will support students in finding the best information to maximise their learning.

Work ExperienceAll students will have the opportunity to undertake a work placement as part of their studies. This provides students with the opportunity to experience, first hand, vocational practice within the industry they have chosen to study.

Additional Learning Support (ALS)The College welcomes learners with learning difficulties and disabilities. The ALS team is based at Parson’s Walk Campus but offers services to all sites. To find out about the support available call 01942 761 887.

ENGLISH & MATHS= SUCCESS!

What if I have passed my GCSE English and/or maths?If you have already achieved your GCSE English and/or maths, we will help you to develop these skills further. Our tutors will point out to you within sessions what English and maths topics you are practising.

We also have online websites which we will share with you upon enrolment to help you develop your skills further. Many interviews may require you to sit an English and/or maths test so keeping on practising these skills will help you to succeed!

The Pagefield Campus has been transformed with £1.4 million investment of cutting edge machinery and workshops. Students with a passion for engines will benefit from the fully equipped purpose built motor vehicle workshop. There are around 35 million vehicles licensed for use in the UK, this growing sector will always need high qualified vehicle technicians. Students will gain the skills and knowledge through Level 1 to 3 to work confidently to find faults and solve problems.

The spacious workshop is installed with industry standard equipment including: 4 & 2 poster ramps; a simulated MOT Bay; break testing equipment; diagnostic testing equipment. The motor vehicle tutors are highly experienced from careers working with cars, motorcycles and heavy goods vehicles in the British Army.

The Floristry & Horticulture department at Wigan & Leigh College has a flourishing reputation and is becoming one of the finest education providers in the country. Whether you are a musician who wants to learn how to perform live with a band, learn how to become a recording artist or even write, record, produce and promote your own music and would like to develop your ability and skills further, then one of our music courses is for you!

Students will study a variety of subjects including rehersal techniques, music production and recording, music theory, composing music, creating music with computers and all about the music industry including promoting your own live events.

Performing in public (either as a live musician or within a sound engineering

The School for the Arts is a dedicated centre for all our creative courses and has exceptional facilities including the purpose built Saidy Theatre, three sprung floor dance studios that are edged in floor to ceiling mirrors and spacious classrooms.

Students can choose courses from: performing arts, acting and

dance. These courses are predominantly practical but will also

involve workshops, seminars and classroom based activities.

Public Services at Wigan & Leigh College offers students the opportunity to develop the physical and academic skills required for successful careers in the Police, Fire and Rescue, Prison Services, Armed Forces and as a Paramedic. Students studying on the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Public Services attended the College’s annual Police Day held at the College’s Parson’s Walk Centre.

They took part in an intelligence gathering group activity with Greater Manchester Police’s counter terrorism unit, before having a series of talks about the various careers on offer. The event is now in its seventh year.

The Centre of Sporting Excellence offers world class facilities at Leigh Sports Village’s multi-million pound complex that includes: a swimming pool, gymnasium, athletics stadium, 3G AstroTurf pitches and indoor sports halls.

Disabled Sports Achiever of the YearStudent, Gregg Warburton, from Leigh, has been crowned Disabled Sports Achiever of the Year at the Believe Sports Awards.

The wheelchair basketball player who studies Sport at the College by day, was presented with the accolade in front of around 400 people at the prestigious DW Stadium.

The talented 17-year-old won the award just days after returning from Spain, where he represented Great Britain at the Under-22 Wheelchair Basketball European Championships.

Lauren Holding, 19, was recruited by the company after attending the Virgin Talent Academy, and recently began her new job as a customer service assistant.

The teenager from Wigan achieved a Level 3 Diploma in Travel & Tourism before progressing on to the Cabin Crew Level 2 Diploma. She is now travelling the country carrying out her duties.

WHAT COULD I DO NEXT?

Students can progress from Level 2 through to Level 3. At Wigan & Leigh College we have excellent links with employers which enables many students to secure employment at the end of their course with: tour operators, tourist boards, retail travel agencies, visitor attractions and hotels.

Students can also progress on to higher education courses including HND in Travel & Tourism related subjects.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR QUALIFICATION

BTEC Level 3 Extended DiplomaBTEC Extended Diplomas are two year courses made up of 18 units or subjects (core units and specialist units) related to your chosen industry. It is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction and at the end you should achieve a triple grade e.g. PPP, MMM, DDD or D*D*D* which attract points for university, just like A Levels.

A BTEC Extended Diploma at D*D*D* is the equivalent to achieving 3 grade As at A Level.

Progression Most students will go on to university after studying a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma. Others go straight into work. A BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma will give you knowledge and skills to enter your chosen industry.

BTEC Level 1 DiplomaThe BTEC Level 1 Diploma is the first step on the BTEC ladder. It is a good introduction to learning about the area of work you are interested in. It is a one year course made up of a number of units or subjects, all related to your chosen industry. At the end of your course you should achieve a Pass.

Progression Most students will carry on learning about their chosen industry by studying a BTEC Level 2 Diploma. Another option is to continue learning in the workplace gaining employment based training such as an apprenticeship.

BTEC Level 2 Diploma/First Extended DiplomaBTEC Level 2 Diplomas are one year courses made up of a number of units or subjects, related to your chosen industry. At the end you should achieve a Pass, Merit or Distinction. A BTEC Level 2 Diploma is the equivalent to achieving 4 GCSEs at grade C.

Progression The BTEC Level 2 Diploma is a great stepping stone onto the Level 3 Extended Diploma and most students will go on to study at this higher level. Another option is to continue learning in the workplace gaining employment based training.

APPLICANT WELCOME DAYYou will be invited to an applicant welcome day in July where you will sample your subjects, meet tutors and fellow students to prepare you for the start of the term.

ENROLMENTIn August once you have received your GCSE results you will be invited into College to complete your enrolment.

THE OFFERAt the end of your interview, if you and the interviewer decide that this is the right course for you, you will be offered a place at the College. Your offer will be conditional on you achieving certain grades in your GCSEs. You may also be required to attend College for an audition, portfolio event or skills testing.
