Woodfords Indian Education Center

Happy March to everyone! In an effort to help our students better prepare for test taking and state assess-

ment testing, the WIEC will begin test practice from 4-5pm, Monday through Thursday. We recognize that

some students are doing better in school but their quiz/test scores still remain low. A number of different

factors may interfere with their performance. The WIEC is committed to helping students prepare for up-

coming state assessments, by suggesting different test strategies, assisting in math fact practice, and help-

ing with reading comprehension. We will practice with any student who wants to improve their skills. If a

student participates 8 times during the month (2 days a week), they are eligible for a vending machine

treat.

We’ve planned some fun trips and events for the kids over Spring Break. We hope you will encourage your

child(ren) to attend daily. The center will be open from 10am-5pm, March 28-April 1. Spring Break activities

are listed on the front page of the newsletter and on the WIEC calendar.

Truancy/Excused Absences– If your student does not attend school, we cannot allow them here at the cen-

ter to play on the computer and watch movies when they should be in school learning. If it is an excused

absence for sickness/bereavement, please keep them at home.

Homework Assistance/Tutoring behavior– Please continue to discuss good behavioral practices with your

child. We notice that when students are frustrated with their workload, they start taking it out on the WIEC

staff. Talk with them and let them know this is not acceptable behavior.

Progress Reports– Please remind your child to turn in their progress reports/report cards to the WIEC. We

will be rewarding students with incentive awards for good grades.

Community Playground– The playground located on the east side of the WIEC building is no longer consid-

ered part of the WIEC. We will no longer offer adult supervision, unless the center is holding physical activi-

ties on the playground, as part of our programming. We noticed that instead of participating in tutoring or

other WIEC activities, some children are electing to go play outside and enjoy the nice weather. In this in-

stance, we have told the students that playing outside without supervision is at their own risk.

WIEC Field Trips- Any student trip sponsored by the WIEC/PAC, especially an incentive based trip, is re-

served for those students who are enrolled at and attend the center on a daily basis and who regularly par-

ticipate in after school homework assistance, tutoring, and other WIEC activities. We cannot accommodate

drop-ins on the day of a trip. There will be upcoming incentive and summer trips for the kids to participate

in, so please encourage your child to attend the Ed Center on a regular basis. And of course, permission slips

are required for each trip in order for us to transport. Good behavior is expected each and every outing. We

hope to keep representing the Hung A Lel Ti Community with respect, courtesy, and self-control when we

go on outings.

Cooperation of parents/guardians– When an issue of behavior, involving a student, arises at the center, it

would ideal for the parent/guardian and the WIEC to be in communication and agreement with policies/

rules. We need to work together to make the center a productive, nurturing, and safe place. If there is a

serious incident or ongoing issue of behavior, the parent/guardian of the student must meet with WIEC

staff to discuss a behavioral plan, in order for the student to come back to the center. We found that

when the parent or guardian is on board with our rules and policies, it eliminates confusion and misun-

derstandings. The WIEC has rules/policies in place to: protect other students from harm or bullying;

and allow the parent/guardian the space and opportunity to discuss solutions to prevent future inci-

dents from happening.

On to more uplifting news…

Congratulations to Rhea (3rd), Aidan (6th) and Isaiah (7/8th) for January Hawks of the Month!! Keep up

the hard work!!

We’d like to congratulate Alyssa, Andrew, Rhea, Lauren, Lila, and Emmanuel for their participation and

graduation from the SOS Outreach Ski Program, a non-profit organization which inspires youth to make

positive decisions for healthy and successful lives. Students who participated in all five days received

Certificates of Completion and a beanie, and were recog-

nized for their dedication to the five core values: Courage,

Discipline, Integrity, Wisdom, and Compassion. Each gradu-

ate was rewarded with five extra days loaded on to their ski

passes. Good job, students! We’re happy you had a great

time up at Kirkwood.

Lastly, the WIEC staff is currently working on the Summer

Academic and Cultural Curriculum. We hope to create fun,

exciting, and engaging activities and lessons for the stu-

dents to take part in. We also have several trips planned.

We are hoping to surpass last year’s Summer Program by

improving planning and participation.

BOOK REVIEW: The Collapse of Parenting (How we hurt our kids when we treat them like grown-ups), by Dr. Leonard Sax.

Dr. Sax has been a family physician and psychologist for 27 years, conducting workshops around the world for parents, teachers,

social workers, counselors, school psychologists and juvenile justice professionals. He believes that American families are facing a

crisis of authority, where the kids are in charge, out of shape emotionally and physically, and suffering because of it.

Dr. Sax has some interesting ideas about what parents can do to help a child or teen become a fulfilled adult. First, he believes that

parents should teach their children about humility. Humility, Sax claims, is one of the most un-American ideas to be taught in our

country today. What is humility? Humility means being as interested in other people as you are in yourself. Children today have

been indoctrinated in their own awesomeness with no understanding of how a culture of bloated self-esteem can lead to resent-

ment because what the child set out to do did not happen as planned or there may be an inability to see any reason to change be-

cause the child believes there is no need to change because they are already the best they can be.

A second idea to help your child become a fulfilled adult is to enjoy time with your children. Get out doors and enjoy being with

your kids. Let them know that you want to spend time with them. Teach them how to do things and encourage them to learn new

things and try to learn and do things together. One of the greatest gifts you can give your child is how to become a lifelong learner.

Lastly, Dr. Sax suggests teaching your children the meaning of life. Life is not always being the best at everything we do, it is not

always getting the best job, nor is it about being the smartest. Sometimes, life is just about becoming the best human being you

can be. Today, the mainstream culture is focused on fame and wealth. But the pursuit of fame and wealth and good looks will not,

unfortunately, lead to happiness. Helping your child understand that when a person finds and fulfills their own true potential, that is

when a person is more likely to find their own true fulfillment and happiness.

In his book Dr. Sax helps parents understand that a child or teen is more likely to become a fulfilled and satisfied adult, if parents

will help their children mature by teaching them to set meaningful goals and work toward those goals to the best of their ability. He

also suggests that another way to become a fulfilled and satisfied adult is to have humility by serving others and being as interested

in others as you are in yourself.

There is no greater responsibility between human beings than that of a parent to a child. In his book, Dr. Sax explains that it is the

parent’s responsibility not only to feed, clothe, and shelter the child, but to also instill a sense of purpose, a longing to do what is

right, and to teach the meaning of life according to the parent’s best understanding.

The PAC would like to invite parents and guardians to the PAC meetings held every first Friday of each

month at 1pm. We meet in the WIEC Library to discuss ways in which we can:

advocate on behalf of our children's and grandchildren's education

Be informed of different issues at the WIEC, schools, in the community

brainstorm ideas for fundraising for student awards and good grades incentives

Communicate and create working relationships with Alpine County Unified School District, Douglas

County School District, and Lake Tahoe Unified School District.

We would like to see young parents get involved in their children’s education and carry the torch for oth-

er new parents. Our meetings are open to anyone and we welcome new faces and voices.

We would like to recognize Katherine Walker, PAC Chairwoman and JOM & Higher Education Committee

member for her time attending meetings and keeping the Hung A Lel Ti Community informed and updat-

ed on JOM related funding/upcoming events and higher education news. Last month, the Washoe Tribe

sent two JOM representatives to receive a national Johnson O’Malley Association award at the National

JOM Association Conference in Washington D.C.. Thank you Katherine!

The WIEC is offering testing preparation for those interested in improving their test taking skills. Students who participate, at least twice a week or 8 times a month, will receive vending machine goodies.

Test Prep is offered every Mon-Thurs from 4-5pm at the WIEC.

So come on over and participate!
