Dear Brethren, We had a “fun” September Stated meeting. RW Bill Bond, our Junior Warden, pre-sented several stories about members of the lodge. While I
laughed most of the evening at his tales, I must admit the veracity of his recollections were undoubtedly in question. His stories were truly enjoyed by all in attendance. In fact, some of the brethren wore still commenting on his stories during recent degree work. In addition to enjoying RW Bill’s sto-ries, we also had two drawings for “Cavalier” and “Hokie” football gift bags. My wife, Yvonne, filled two large bags with all kinds of football fan para-phernalia. Although Bro. Gene Carpen-ter won the “Hokie” bag, it was with reluctance that he posed for a picture. I think he was worried what his fellow “Wahoo” fans would do to him. I also want to thank those brethren who attended Piedmont Stella No. 50’s Stated meeting with me in September. I was able to present the District Trav-eling Gavel to the Worshipful Master. Let’s keep “Spreading Masonic Light”. Several announcements: (1) Starting in October we will be back in our usual “Coat & Tie” attire. I en-joyed wearing lodge golf shirts this summer.
(2) RW Andy Keller, our lodge “Visitation” facilitator, will schedule an-other afternoon visit this month. Please contact him at 434-293-9973 or [email protected] if you’re interested in attending. Our September visit was extremely rewarding, and made me feel good to be a Mason. (3) In a reciprocation of Masonic friend-ship, I’ve invited RW Harry Holtz and the members of his District, including Jefferson Lodge No. 20, Most Worship-ful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Virginia, Free and Accepted Masons, Incorpo-rated, to attend our October Stated meeting as our guests. I hope all will take this opportunity to renew friend-ships established from past visits. And as always, please don’t hesitate to contact me or our Secretary if you need assistance: [email protected], 434-981-5428 and Brother Mark Chapman, [email protected], 434-971-1332. Fraternally, Bro. Mike Griffin, WM

The WM recognized those with Masonic birthdays in September,
the following were present: Mike Griffin, WM; Jim Dickerson, 17
years; Tom Hill, 4 years; Philip Nelson, 13 years; Carlos
McReddie, 28 years; and Jason Pattison, 2 years.
RW Bill Bond, pictured right, was the September speaker. Brother Bond
stated that we didn’t know enough about each other, and told two stories
to illustrate his point. The first story was about Wor. Philip Nelson and
how he loved God, confronted a bear in the wilds and became chaplain of
Widow’s Sons’ Lodge. The story takes place in West Virginia where
Brother Nelson was born and raised and continues to have a cabin in the
mountains near Franklin. The characters in the story were Brother Nelson
and Brother Gene Carpenter, also a West Virginia native.
The second story was one of intrigue, mystery, drama, prayer, God’s an-
swer to prayer and Masonic reconciliation. The characters in this story
were RW Brother Bond, RW Roy Clements, RW Bob Simpson, and RW
Don Wright. The story takes place in the lodge room over many months
where the brethren experienced the great tenets of Freemasonry: Brotherly
Love, Relief and Truth. At the conclusion of the stories, Brother Bond
received two rounds of applause. Well Done Brother Bond!
Marine Corp Toys for Tots
Each year the Marine Corp Toys for Tots program receives donations and new
toys to provide children with the joy of Christmas cheer. The James Monroe
Chapter, No. 549, National Sojourners, Inc. is pleased to have this program
among the many programs that our chapter participates in during the year. We
ask that each Mason join with us in adding to the Christmas joy for these chil-
dren by bringing a new toy, not wrapped, to the October or November stated
communications. Members of our Chapter will be pleased to pick up these donations and de-
liver them to the Charlottesville Location of the Marine Toys for Tots program.
Checks are always welcome. Make your check payable to Toys for Tots and you can give them
to Bro. Jeff Hodges or Bro. Bob Simpson.
Brethren, these are difficult times for all of us, but a little child doesn’t understand the economy
or its implications. Please assist us in this out-reach effort.
Sincerely and fraternally,
Jeffery E. Hodges, PGM
President, James Monroe Chapter, No. 549, National Sojourners, Inc., Charlottesville, Virginia
