TODAY-SGAME WHYTE and MACKAY SUPER LEAGUE

ROUND 22 - FINAL GAME TA YPORT v HILL OF BEATH HAWTHORN

Football is certainly an amazing game! The odds on a situation such as we have this afternoon must have been astronomical two weeks ago, never mind the start of the season. A full league programme - less one game - and the championship cannot be decided until that very last game. That, of course, is the situation which we have this afternoon. It's quite simple, the title will go to Linlithgow Rose unless Tayport can win by three clear goals against Hill of Beath. 5-3 in Tayport's favour would force a play-off but 6-4 would give Tayport the title. Of course the title almost went to Rose two weeks ago until Tayport pulled the game at Prestonfield out of the fire to extend the league season and give themselves the slimmest of chances. Super League sponsors Whyte and Mackay probably can't quite believe it either. What the Bank of Scotland or Bell's would give to have enjoyed the cliffhangers that Whyte and Mackay have experienced with the East Region Juniors? Last season, Haws were Tayport's nearest challengers but a bad start to the season has cost them dearly and they were relegated for the first time in their 29 year history when Glenrothes secured the point they required, in beating Lochee United 5-0 a week ago. Many observers consider that Haws are a better side that their league form would suggest and that would appear to be borne out by their exploits in reaching the last four of the OVD Scottish Cup and, as recently as Wednesday past, they contested the final of the Peddie Smith Maloco Cup against Glenrothes. Like Tayport in midweek, Hill of Beath went down 1-0. For both sides, this is the final game of the season. Tayport's squad has taken a battering in recent games and likely out through injury this afternoon are four key players. Gareth Dailly has a broken ankle), Ralph Hunter, a broken toe, Derek Wemyss was carried off with a bad leg injury at Forfar and Roberto Morris broke down in a comeback game v North End ten days ago. But, we'll just have to get on with it and there is the plus of Dave Reilly, cuptied on Wednesday, being available for today. Some more of the form DR has displayed in the league run-in, would be welcomed by a 'Port support who are set to go through agonies this afternoon.

TEN YEARS AGO JUNE 1994

Tayport were just completing their fourth season in the Junior rank s and , on this day ten years ago, were playing their penultimate game of a 46 game campaign. Forfar West End were the opponents that day in the final of the Whyte & Mackay Cup (now Findlay & Co Cup) An estimated crowd of some 850 basked in the sunshine at Thomson Park , as Tayport trounced their opponents with three excellent goals in what was described as an entertaining contest. Tayport's team was Fraser Mann ; Grant Miller, Grant Paterson , Mark Spalding, Andy Sommerville , Sean Wilkie, Dave Reilly , Jimm y Hunter , Hamish Mackay, Ewan Cameron and Jackie Devine. Subs were Mike Gra y who replaced Jimmy Hunter and George Malone who came on for Hamish Mackay. Cameron, Reilly and Devine were the marksmen. Five of the squad are still playing regularly. As well as our own Pat ty and DR, there's Miller (Carnoustie), Wilkie (North End), and Devine (Elmwood). It was a season in which Tayport had collected a 4th successive champion ship as well as winning the Whyte & Mackay and Intersport Cups. Downfield collected the P&A and Cream of the Barley Trophies while St Josephs picked up the Zamoyski (North/Tayside) Cup. Lochee United were the second division champions. Elsewhere in 1993/94, Largs Thistle were shocking odds-on favourites Glenafton to win the Scottish Junior Cup before 9,000 at lbrox. Arthurlie were the Central Champs. Camelon won the East Region title on goal difference from Newtongrange Star while current Super League teams Arniston and Bathgate languished in Division Two. In Fife ten years ago, Hill of Beath were runaway winners of a 28 game league championship, leaving runners-up Oakley trailing by eight points . Two clubs have disappeared from the Fife League in the intervening ten years - Clackmannan and Tulliallan Thistle . Hill of Beath dominated the local cup competitions , winning three, all at the expense of Rosyth Recreation. Haws regular line-up that season was Westwood -(Campbell) , Brebner , Dackers , Mitchell, Kenny, Pryde, Brannigan, Wilson , Duncan , Archibald , Wright, Marshall, Mcinroy , Ritchie . In Ayrshire, Irvine Meadow pipped Auchinleck for the title , while Cumnock were being relegated. Stonehaven were cocks of the North.

THE CANNIEPAIRT It's probably not recognisable to most, but the photograph (courtesy of season ticket holder Jimmy Brown) on the opposite page is of The Canniepairt in 1970. The photo is taken from the bottom end of the ground looking up towards the pavilion. It's likely the photo was taken from what was known as the Mill Brig. This bridge carried the road, which separated the Mill Houses from the rest of Tayport, over the Edinburgh - Dundee railway line. The railway, which closed to passenger traffic in 1955, skirted Scotscraig Golf Course's 15th and 16th fairways and also the present football pitch at The Canniepairt. When the photo was taken, The Canniepairt was being used by the army as part of the Polex 70 oil pipeline exercise. You can identify the caravan site amenity block in the top right of the photograph and the goal posts on then East Common at top left. After the exercise, the ground was leased by the Town Council to Tayport Football Club. What about the origins of the name 'Canniepairt', however? Research by eminent authorities such as Fife Council's Archaeologist and Dundee Council's Archivist has shed light on the matter. The Concise Scots Dictionary (Aberdeen University Press): canny/kanny: favourable, lucky/of good omen, pleasant, good, comfortable, easy. pairUpert: portion of land, part of estate, area, site. It is likely that the name origin would refer to sheltered, fertile, easy ploughed land but there's also the suggestion that folklore could come into it if 'cannie' was meaning "good omen" (shipwreck survivors on the shore, perhaps). The medieval and post medieval periods are characterised by the way in which lands were given literal descriptions. The solfskift system of land division into sunny and shady sides is a good example, as is burntlands, wetlands and stonyground. In this vein, it is entirely likely that the term 'cannie' has been applied to this area of ground, simply to imply that it is quite a good bit of ground. Informed opinion is that the name is probably not too old, likely 16th or 17th century, 'Cannie' is not a word of great antiquity and whilst 'Pairt' is a very old word, it does not become common until the 15th or really the 16117th centuries .... when it begins to feature in just about every second word in historical land related documents. Exhaustive research is required to sort out the origins of words, stretching as far back into time as possible. Only by doing this can one be sure about a place name origin. It is not unlikely that the 'Cannie' element might be a post-medieval Scots vernacular rendering of one similar, but much earlier Gaelic topographical name. A Gaelic 'camas' means a channel or a bay in an inland/coastal place and the very common 'Ceann' meaning head, promontory or headland. It's not improbable that Canniepairt is a corruption of either of those Gaelic words. However, we're going to stick with the 'good ground' origin. That meaning is further reinforced by the reference to a short story by RL Stevenson in which an old Scot described a piece of ground as 'canny land'. Acknowledgements - Douglas Spiers, Iain Flett and Clara Young for the research. Jimmy Brown and Val Graham for the photo.

SPONSORS OF

DAVEBAIIDE Good afternoon to our fans and may I extend a warm ! welcome to the players and officials of our visitors Hill of '··········· .................................................................. .

Beath Hawthorn.

Here we are about to begin our final game of the season and I suppose by most clubs standards our season to date would be described as a very good year . For me it has been a season of great highs and more than normal lows. The month of August was. without doubt, the lowest time possible in the club's short history . I recall the headlines in the Evening Telegraph on 1st September 2003 - "Tayport Hit Rock Bottom*.

Since that day we've contested the OVD Scottish Cup Final for the 5th time since 1993. won the North/Tayside Cup and clawed our way back from the dead to at least give ourselves an outside chance to achieve the unachievable. THE SUN report last week described us as "the fallen East super League champstt. Not quite. But no matter what the outcome of today's game, I, as the manager, am very proud of our achievement this season and so should be everybody connected to T ayport. especially over this past couple of weeks. , ~". · '· ... ,.a·,._,

Remember rve managed the club through three unsuccessful Scottish Cup Final appearances and, believe me. it's virtually impossible to find the inspiration to tum up for a game, let alone play, after such disappointment . So the will and character our players showed to produce the victories at Linlithgow and to follow that up with six points and a ten to nil goals aggregate is quite an achievement in itself and proves the kind of dressing room we have and the mentality that exists between us. Can we produce one more. One thing's for sure, we'll be giving everything . Sieze the day!

Support the Port, ~cw.e. 9Jai.lire

p.s. we need you, our fans, to give us everything as well .

" PLAYERS DESERVE ENORMOUS CREDIT FOR GETTING TO THIS STAGE, HAVING

PREVIOUSLY LOOKED DEAD AND BURI -ED" says

VUNM0RE In this, the final edition of the programme for :ZOOS/04, It would normally be appropriate to review the season as a whole. These are not normal circumstances, however.

Today 's match will mabe or br_tff!./! __ Tav.port 11 season. The plavers deserve enormous credit for their efforts of the past fortnight and they are now ever so close to retaining the Whyte & Macba11 Super League, having prevlous/11 loobed dead and burled.

Last weebend 11 win at home to Arnlston was far more comfortable than would have been predicted, but the margin of vldol'JI was nowhere near what It should have been. This paradox, In Itself, Is re• marbable. Scott Peters led the way on Saturday, with his determination to boss the midfield, clear for all to see. The two goals he scored Jn the first half, both scorching strlbes, were a huge bonus. After the breab Steven Stewart and Jean Christle both found the net, tablng the tal/11 to four without reply, although several others should have added their names to the scoresheet, In a one-sided affair.

Jo to this afternoon's title crunch and, the bid to record a three goal vidOl'JI, which would see 'Port surpass so many of their prior achievements. It will, of course, be the final fixture of the season, thanbs to Wedne1da1111 shocb defeat at Jtrathmore Parb. Forfar West End held on to their lead, an ear/11 gift, despite playing the final third ol a dour contest with on/11 ten men. It was certaln/11 a display to for• get. Hopeful/JI, today will provide memories to cherish.

\!£NU£ ROW RUMBLES ON The row over the venue for the Final of the OVD Scottish Junior Cup rumbles on. Clearly, very unhappy at being cast as the villain in the matter, the SJF A secretary has hit back at the critics as the following extract from a management report shows. " The Secretary advised the Committee of the approaches made to him regarding the Final venue. The Management Committee confirmed the secretary 's concern regarding the insidious interference encountered in respect of the venue chosen for the OVD Cup Final. Threats to discontinue sponsorship, coupled with approaches to OVD Executives, MPs, MEPs, have proved detrimental to the Association. This course of action could well Jeopardise the national cup competition which in turn affects the well being of all member clubs. The Management wish to make it clear that they will not be bullied or coerced by any individual or group who appear to be working to their own selfish agenda. The policy of the Management Committee will remain that they wi// continue to act in a way that will prove beneficial to all member clubs within the Association. It was further agreed that, following discussion with interested parties in the new season, the Secretary will put together specifications, the response to which will allow a suitable Cup Final venue to be selected and timeously secured by the Management Committee in a timescale that will support the OVD Cup Final. " Phew ... strong stuff.

**** Club members were saddened to hear of the death this week of Bill Menzies. Bill, a keen follower of the team since his son-in-law , Fraser Mann, signed for the club in the early '90s , had been ill for a lengthy period and unable to attend the football . The photo shows Bill (centre back) enjoying a pre-season weekend with the team in Galashiels . Others (1-r) R.Irvine, S.McDade , J.Robertson, E.Stewart, A.Phin, J.Spalding and T.Reilly.

SNIFFING ABOUT WITH

THE SNOUT

The SJFA Secretary's report for this year's AGM which will be held in Aberdeen on 19th June, noted that the largest attendance of the 200 games played prior to the semi-final stages, was the Cambuslang Rangers v Tayport quarter final tie which attracted a crowd of 1,513. Gate receipts as a whole, were up 6% on last season, according to the report.

East Region secretary Jock Myles was a visitor to the Canniepairt last Saturday displaying a new look hairstyle. "There's a story behind that, said Jock. "I fell asleep in my armchair and my granddaughter took the opportunity to try her hand at hairdressing using my bar net as a model. "I had to go to my barber to see what he could do for me" . "Sorry, Jock , said the barber, "the only thing I can do with that is a No 2. " Hence the scalped appearance of big Jock!

Tayport ' s Canniepairt ground gets used for many events and that list was added to last Sunday evening when the Tayport Churches got together at the ground to stage a Songs of Praise event. There was a healthy 2oo+ attendance with the enclosure, which was seated for the occasion, full and standing room only. Tayport Instrumental Band provided the accompaniment for an event which was declared a big success by the organisers.

OVD Scottish Cup Final referee William Collum, was featured on BBC's Reporting Scotland in midweek. The 25 yrs old teacher of Religious Studies in Bellshill was promoted to Class One and will be doing the SPL next season as its youngest ever referee. When asked, given the choice, would he prefer to have been a soccer superstar or a referee. His preferred choice would be a referee. With twenty years or so ahead of him, could this be a budding Collina?

Snout hears that Davie Reilly was Jess than chuffed last week to have been described in the programme as in his 41st year. DR, of course, is but a lad and is still in his thirties - just! In putting in another great shift again last week, DR just oozed class.

Carnoustie, who turned down the chance of a free open top double decker bus to parade the OVD Cup through the streets of Carnoustie on the night of their Firhill triumph, preferring instead, to wait for their gala day in July, are now having difficulty locating a bus for the occasion. It looks like it's been worth the wait, it looks like they'll have the Tayside Premier League trophy to parade as well.

Former 'Port players Billy Coventry and Andy Heggie who recently left Broughty Athletic, have been installed as the new management team at fledgling Junior side Ballingry Rovers. Ballingry hope to gain membership at the AGM. Best of luck lads, we're sure you'll do well. ·

IBdia matters The Fife Herald excelled itself last week with its coverage of the Tayport games v Linlithgow, North End and Glenrothes, managing to provide a big back page spread on the Wednesday evening game, despite the match ending only 24 hours before the paper was due for distribution . Not bad for a weekly. The back page report was illustrated by a fine colour photo from the Lithgae game which captured all the drama of that afternoon. It was pretty clear that the Sports Editors of the various Sundays and Dailies didn't see the Amiston game as producing the result that Tayport needed - the reports were distinctly scarce. The Evening Telegraph didn't even bother to send a photographer. Radio Tay's (and The Courier's) doughty duo of Murray McGregor and Dick Donnelly were in attendance , however, and it's always good to see them at The Canniepairt. The Daily Record - and they weren't alone - managed to publish a duff league table which had scrubbed the match between Haws and Kelty which had been the subject of a protest. With no explanation , the casual observer would think that the two sides had yet to play each other . The Edinburgh Evening News has been recording the thoughts of Linlithgow manager Jim Sinnet who has really been through the wringer since Tayport won in dramatic style at Prestonfield two weeks ago - as the quotes testify. Fri. 28 May "the result on Wednesday night [Tayport 1 Glenrothes 2] makes things very difficult for Tayport and puts us in a very strong position .... Because tomorrow [Rose v Tayport] is our last game of the season, they would have not only to win and win their three remaining league games, but also do so by three or four goals which I think will prove too much." Mon. 31 May "We asked our defence to hold tight for the last few minutes but we lost the game. However the 2-1 defeat does leave them [Tayport] having to score 12 goals with none against in their last three games" Fri. 4 June [referring to the possibility of beating Sauchie in the Fife & Lothians Cup Final and Tayport failing to win v Amiston] "Not many teams get the chance to win two trophies in a day so it would be definitely be good to do that" Mon 7 June [after Sauchie 4-0 Rose] "They [Tayport] knew what they had to do in their last three games which I feel has given them an advantage. I just don't know why they weren't playing at the same time as us ...... that 's not fair or right .. .. something has to be done about this by the football association for next season"

Oakley stayed up courtesy of Hill of Beath protesting against Kelty . Kelty won the league match between the sides but HoB spotted tha t there had been an ineligible player fielded by Kelty. HoB did all the spadework. pulled together all the proof etc and presented the case to the Leag ue in a bid to be awarded the po ints. The Leagu e agreed. the player was indeed inelig ible. Kelty were forfeited the points and fined but,. despite their efforts in bringing th.is matter to the leag ue ' s attention, Hi ll of Beath w ere not awarded the points . The three poin ts would have lccpt Haws up and relegated Oakley.
