The Lost Sea

Address: 140 Lost Sea Road, Sweetwater

Hours of Operation: Open every day but Christmas Day:November, December, Janu-

Type of business: Tourist attraction, America’s Largest Underground Lake

Brief history: One of the first known owners of the caverns was William

B. Craighead (Chief Craighead of the

Cherokee Indians); The Lost Sea was discovered in 1905 by a 13-year-old boy

named Ben Sands. The history of the caverns was known for many years but

it wasn’t until 1965 that the Lost Sea was opened as a major tourist attraction.

Major milestones: Not only is the Lost Sea America’s Largest Underground

Lake but is also a Registered National Natural Landmark and was recently designated a Civil War Trail Marker.

Sequoyah Birthplace Museum

Special products or services: East-ern Band of the Cherokee Indians

Brief history: The mission of the Sequoyah Birthplace Museum is to

promote the understanding and ap-preciation of the history and culture

of the Cherokee Indians in Eastern Tennessee, particularly the life and

contributions of Sequoyah. The Mu-seum will collect, preserve, interpret,

and exhibit objects and data that support this mission.

Brief history: The Tellicafe has been owned by the Leudemann family for 18 years and is known as the premier

restaurant in Monroe County. The Tellicafe staff is made up of servers

and cooks who have been dedicated to the Tellicafe for a combined total

of 41 years.

Major milestones: In 1905 The Tellicafe was 80 precent

destroyed by a fire. It took six months to rebuild.

Key employees: Since March of 2012 Marion Leudemann has taken the role of general manager of the

Tellicafe.
