The Village of Cashton is almost entirely surrounded by the beautiful coulees of the driftless region, yet with-in 30 minutes of Sparta, Viroqua and LaCrosse. Front Street and Main Street take you on a ride through historic downtown.

Cashton has a beautiful park, award-winning schools, healthcare

access and affordable opportuni-ties for high quality housing.

A drive along Highway 33 east will give you a glimpse of the heritage and culture of the Amish. The Amish post small signs adver-tising their wares which include handcrafted quilts, rugs, furniture

and baskets. Bakeries, leather shops and other entities also dot the countryside. The Amish welcome visitors every day except Sunday. Be sure and include a stop at the cheese factory where you can watch cheese being made, and sample some of the fine fresh curd. A bed and breakfast, several restaurants, an Amish tour service, wind turbines, organic farming, and the work of Ocooch Mountain artisans can also be found in this quaint village. Saint Mary’s Church, located at the highest point on St. Mary’s Ridge, just east of Cashton on County Highway U, was built more than 100 years ago. High bluffs and long, narrow valleys make this a spectacular scenic area.

The Village of Kendall is the home of the Elroy-Sparta State Bike Trail Headquarters…the nation’s first rails-to-trails conversion. The Headquarters is the old train depot and has a train museum inside as well. Receive trail information at 608-463-7109 or www.elroy-sparta-trail.com. The Village of Kendall Wilderness Campground only a block from the bike trail, located on a bluff, high above Glenwood Park, offers a beautiful view of the Baraboo River Valley. There are six primitive sites with a fire pit and picnic table for each. It features a bathhouse with showers and restrooms, volleyball courts, a baseball diamond, basketball court and a playground. Enjoy fishing in the nearby Baraboo River.Labor Day weekend starts out with the Corn Bust on Friday evening at Glenwood Park; followed by a pancake breakfast at the park on Saturday morning with antique cars & tractors

and sometimes a farm tractor pull to fill the day. Sunday events include a parade, larger tractor pull, and grilled chicken and a variety of other foods. In August KAACO (Kendall Area Arts & Crafts Organization) presents a comedy theatre in the round outside in the remaining foundation of the old train turntable they also include a meal that fits in with the play. October brings the Colors of Kendall artisans from all over come to show their creations with presentations of Kendall’s history and a driving tour to go producers and artisans. In November they host their annual craft show in the Community Hall.

Welcome to Sparta, “America’s Bicycling Capital”, nestled in the beautiful rolling hills of Western Wisconsin’s Driftless Region. Once known for the healing powers of the local artesian springs, Sparta is now

most recognized as the “Bicycling Capital of America”, based on the fact that it is

part of “America’s first Rails to Trails” project; the first rail bed to be converted

to bike trail is between Elroy and Sparta.

Over 60,000 visitors enjoy the Elroy-Sparta and La Crosse

River State Bike Trails. The Elroy-Sparta trail is a 32-mile ride through spectacular foliage and topography. It passes over 33 trestles and through tree cavernous tunnels, one of which is

almost a mile long. The La Crosse River Trail offers an additional 22 miles of biking pleasure and parallels the La Crosse River. Prairie remnants farmlands, trout streams and hardwood forests are found along the trail.

Sparta offers a variety of attractions for all types of interest. Explore the scenery while in the saddle riding horseback or by fishing the area’s best trout streams & hunting on more than 15,000 acres of public land. Experience the breath taking views by canoeing & kayaking on the La Crosse River or Perch Lake, swish through the snow while skiing our groomed trails or hills & take in the rich history when you visit the local museums & Victorian homes. Enjoy the local shopping & wine & dine in the comfort of Sparta’s restaurants.

Tomah is truly Wisconsin’s “Cranberry Country” . . . and the crossroads for West-Central Wisconsin. Our location, where the state’s interstate system (I-90/94) divides, makes us the perfect destination.

Whether it’s a family vacation, reunion, business meeting or if

you just need to getaway, Tomah is your place. Shop for unique

Amish and cranberry items and antiques. Or enjoy the outdoors—hiking, biking,

boating, camping, golfing, snowmobiling or skiing in the area. The City of Tomah has 12 lodging entities offering over 635 rooms. They offer hot tub suites, indoor swimming pools and an indoor aquatic center—all conveniently located by more than 20 area dining establishments.

Restaurants offer ethnic foods, food with a

European flair, steaks and seafood and great pizza.

Savor a meal created with locally grown cranberries. Tomah’s eight campgrounds offer all the amenities you need for a chance to get back to nature. Visit Mill Bluff State Park, McMullen County Park, the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge or Wildcat Mountain State Park all within a short distance, to enjoy hiking trails and birding. Tomah offers driving tours to learn more about the Amish residing in the county, and on growing cranberries in the area. The Amish tour will take you past several farms—watch for little signs at the end of the driveways offering goods for sale. The cranberry country tour will take you past several area cranberry marshes. Harvest season is normally the first 3 weeks in October. Both tours offer a great way to see our fall foliage colors too! The Budweiser Dairyland Super National Truck & Tractor Pull held annually in June; and the Monroe County Fair are two great Tomah events. For more information on the Tomah area or community events visit www.tomahwisconsin.com or call the Tomah Visitors Bureau at 800-948-6624.

Located in the heart of the upper Midwest, Fort McCoy is the only U.S. Army installation in Wisconsin. Fort McCoy is named for Robert Bruce McCoy. The son of a Civil War captain, McCoy was a prominent local resident who served as a lawyer, district attorney, county judge and mayor of neighboring Sparta, Wis., while also serving 31 years in the Wisconsin National Guard. The 60,000-acre installation is fully capable of supporting training throughout a four-season

climate and offers an excellent training environment and support infrastructure for

military personnel to develop and maintain the skills necessary for mission success.

As a Total Force Training Center, Fort McCoy’s primary responsibility is to support the training and readiness of military personnel and units of all branches and components of America’s armed forces. Fort McCoy is a Secondary Mobilization Force Generation Installation equipped to support contingency operations as ordered. Fort McCoy lives its motto, “Total Force Training Center.” The installation has provided support and facilities for the field and classroom training of more than 100,000 military personnel from all services each year since 1984. Fort McCoy has the largest workforce in Monroe County and one of the largest within the greater La Crosse region.

The installation offers year-round recreational opportunities at Pine

View Campground and Whitetail Ridge Ski Area. Both areas are open to the public. Pine View features picnic and playground areas (one handicapped accessible), a campground with a camp store, lodging units, a recreational equipment checkout center, miniature golf, hiking trails and a beach. Winter enthusiasts can enjoy downhill and cross-country skiing, snow tubing and snowboarding at Whitetail Ridge. Tactics Paintball and Laser Tag also are located at Whitetail Ridge. Hunting and fishing opportunities are offered to military (active and retired) and their dependents, government employees, and the general public. Appropriate Fort McCoy permits and State of Wisconsin licenses are required. More information can be found on the Fort McCoy public website at http://www.mccoy.army.mil/Visitors/FishHuntInfo.asp. Tours of Fort McCoy’s award-winning Commemorative Area are available to the public, free of charge. Narrated bus tours and tours of Fort McCoy’s Commemorative Area, consisting of the History Center, World War II-era buildings (open April through October), Equipment Park and Veterans Plaza can be arranged for groups of 15 or more Monday through Saturday by appointment. To schedule a tour, contact the Public Affairs Office at 608-388-2407 or send an email to [email protected]. The History Center, normally open year-round, will undergo renovation in 2014/2015, however, so availability will be limited. Call for details. A self-guided driving tour also is available daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for individuals or smaller groups. A self-guided driving tour brochure can be picked up at the Main Gate or by contacting the Public Affairs Office. Fort McCoy typically hosts an Open House each year on the third Saturday in May, Armed Forces Day. This is an excellent time to visit — no appointment required! All Commemorative Area buildings are open and many special activities are scheduled.

The Village of Wyeville has a population of 150 people, and lies just a few miles east of Tomah on Highway 21. It has a rich railroad history. It was aptly named with a crossing of Chicago and North Western Transportation Company lines and a connecting “wye” in nearly every direction. Today, the Union Pacific Railway crosses through Wyeville. The community has an elementary school, a bar that serves food, a motel and

an antique shop. The Holiday Lodge Golf Resort and RV Park is just a short jaunt off of Highway 21 in Wyeville. The village also borders the Meadow Valley Wildlife Area, a 58,000 acre property that lies within the bed of old Glacial Lake Wisconsin. It offers excellent hunting opportunities, fine hiking, berry picking and wildlife observation.

Home of the world’s largest cranberry festival, Warrens (population 360) hosts more than 120,000 visitors each September to experience three amazing days of shopping, food and fun during the annual Warrens Cranberry

Festival. Cranberry marsh tours are offered on Friday and Saturday, and

one of the area’s largest marching band parades is held on Sunday.

The 2015 festival dates are September 25-27. The Wisconsin Cranberry

Discovery Center is the place to learn all about Wisconsin’s No. 1 fruit crop. Housed in a historic cranberry warehouse in downtown Warrens, the Cranberry Discovery center’s Exhibit Hall features interactive displays, including a cranberry corralling game. After your tour, treat yourself to a dish

of cranberry ice-cream or a slice of cranberry pie

from their in-house bakery. The gift shop features a diverse selection of Wisconsin-made cranberry food products and gift items, including DnA Vintner’s award-winning cranberry wines made from Habelman Brothers cranberries. The center is open May through October. The Wetherby Cranberry Company , operated by third- and fourth-generation cranberry growers, hosts two public events annually: Cranberry Blossom Day on the last Saturday of June and Cranberry Harvest Day on the first Saturday of October. This year’s dates are June 27th and October 3rd. Free marsh tours are offered from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. for both events. Additional activities are held at the Wisconsin Cranberry Discovery Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Wetherby marsh also has fresh cranberries, cranberry wine and other local products for sale in season. For information on other activities and attractions in the Warrens area, see the www.VisitWarrens.com website hosted by the 80 members of the Warrens Area Business Association.

Wilton is located in the heart of the Elroy-Sparta Bike Trail, at the headwaters of the Kickapoo River. The Village of Wilton Campground is five short blocks from the bike trail. Features include a bathhouse with flush toilets, hot showers, and a

laundry facility. The sites have electricity. There is water at the building to fill

your unit up. A playground and a municipal pool are also on site. (www.

Wilton Wood Turtle Days is an annual festival held the first weekend in August. Fireworks, softball, volleyball, arts and crafts, a parade, 5K run-walk, kids’ games, water fights, music and food are all part of the affair. (www.wiltonwoodturtledays.com) This charming village has restaurants and bars serving up great food, and the hardware store rents bikes. The community features a motel and several bed and breakfast destinations. ([email protected]) or 608-435-6666.

The unincorporated community of Cataract lies in the northwest corner of the county, halfway between Sparta and Black River Falls. It is home to the Wegner Grotto and the Little Falls Railroad and Doll Museum. The Mill Pond provides the area with a swimming and picnic area. Soper Creek, Dustin Creek and Big Creek offer excellent trout fishing. Gently rolling farmland and woods provide habitat for deer and turkeys. The Cataract Sportsmen’s Club holds a huge field day the Sunday following Labor Day at its club grounds, just a block east of Highway 27. Funds are used to keep wildlife habitat areas, maintain the Mill Pond Park, and a hiking trail, providing access to more public trails. This area provides more than 1,500 acres of public hunting grounds. Groceries, gas, sandwiches and bait are available at the Cataract Mart. The Long Branch Tavern and Mill Pond Pub serve food all day long. The Wegner Grotto is a grassroots art environment made of glass and pottery shards in concrete from the late 1920s to early 1930s. A chapel, known locally as the “glass church” has been the scene of many weddings. A peace star, peace garden, animals, and replicas of Paul and

Matilda Wegner’s fiftieth anniversary cake, and of the “Bremen”, the ship they came to America on, are also at the grounds. The Kohler Foundation gifted it to Monroe County in 1987 and it is now a county park. The Little Falls Railroad and Doll Museum , located just a couple miles east of Highway 27, is home to hundreds of dolls, and a very interesting collection of railroad memorabilia. It is opening the doors on its 20th season. Visitors will find a large circus train running on the garden railroad this year. The Doll Museum will feature more than 225 antique, vintage and other new dolls donated to the museum since September of 2014, and an exhibit of antique China Head dolls. The museum has a wonderful gift shop as well.

Leon is located along State Highway 27, just 3 miles south of Sparta. The small community is full of fun and ambitious residents. In 2002, USA Today published an article stating Leon, WI had an

“alligator problem”. Needless to say, it was not true, but the residents of

Leon decided they would “make lemonade from lemons” . . .

so Gatorfest was born. A fun festival was planned with

unusual events and activities. They included a laundry basket softball tournament (played with plastic laundry baskets instead of gloves); and a stand still parade where the entries stand still and the people walk by. The Leon

Gatorfest is now in its 13th year and going strong. Check it out at www.leongatorfest.org or www.facebook.com/leongatorfest. Check it out! Ten years ago five Leon organizations—the garden club, first responders, Gatorfest, 4-H, and the snowmobile club raised funds to purchase the Leon School property. They formed a non-profit organization and remodeled the building into the Leon Community Center. It is available for rent throughout the year and is home to Gatorfest—held annually the fourth weekend in August. The downtown community of Leon is home to Leon Country Floors & More, Coulee Refrigeration, Leon Country Motors, Leon Country Tavern and the Congregational Church which recently built a Fellowship Hall. Leon has it all!

Melvina was the first spot in Portland Township to have a permanent settler when the Thomas Rathbun family moved there in 1852. The village was plotted in 1866. Captain Charles Hunt, a notable businessman, Civil War veteran, and politician, is credited with naming Melvina after his first wife, Amanda Melvina Ray.

The community thrived during the late 1800s and through the first decades of the 20th century. At its peak it boasted a church, feed mill, saw mill, depot, lumber yards,

stock yards, blacksmith shop, two saloons, two general stores, a restaurant, livery stable, boarding house, creamery, school, and a dance hall. Melvina’s population today is just over 100 people.

It is known for its annual Melvina Frog Fest celebration slated for July 31 and August 1 and 2 this year. it features softball tournaments, frog races, food, music and inflatables. Charcoal chicken is served on Sunday.
