An Affirmation Based on the Writings of Dr. King
I refuse to believe that we are unable to influence the events which
surround us.
I refuse to believe that we are so bound to racism and war, that
peace, brotherhood and sisterhood are not possible.
I believe there is an urgent need for people to overcome oppression
and violence, without resorting to violence and oppression.
I believe that we need to discover a way to live together in peace, a
way which rejects revenge, aggression and retaliation. The
foundation of this way is love.
I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the
final word in reality. I believe that right temporarily defeated is
stronger than evil triumphant.
I believe that peoples everywhere can have three meals a day for
their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity,
equality and freedom for their spirits.
I believe that what self-centered people have torn down, other-
centered people can build up.
By the goodness of God at work within people, I believe that
brokenness can be healed. "And the lion and the lamb shall lie
down together, and everyone will sit under their own vine and fig
tree, and none shall be afraid."
Gracious God, you create us and love us; you make us to live together in
a community. We thank you for Martin Luther King, Jr. and all your
children who have been filled with your vision for our lives and who have
worked to bring your vision into reality. Fill us with your vision. Guide
us to live by your vision, working to build the beloved community where
everyone is welcomed, all are valued, power is shared, privilege is no
more, and all your children know wholeness and well-being. Through
Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.

community and highlight the power each person has to make a
difference.

“Little Dresses for Africa”
Work Days at the Workspace The Workspace at the Iowa State Memorial Union is hosting a
work weekend for the non-profit organization ―Little Dresses for
Africa‖ January 14 – 16, 2012. Hours are 1 – 4pm on Sunday and
Monday.
Volunteers can assist with making dresses from pillow cases,
providing relief and hope for children in Africa. From cutting
fabric and ironing to sewing, there is a place for anyone that has
an hour or two to spare. The Workspace will provide the
supplies, however if you would like to donate new or gently used
pillowcases or notions you may bring them that day.
To date The Workspace has sent over 400 dresses. ―Over one
million children in Malawi alone have been orphaned to HIV/
AIDS. Because girl orphans are among the most devalued and
abused in their culture, and face such oppression, it is the mission
of Little Dresses for Africa to plant in the hearts of these little
girls that they are worthy. We’re not just sending little dresses –
we’re sending HOPE!‖ - <www.littledressesforafrica.org>
There is no charge to participate and no pre-registration is
necessary. Find the Workspace at 2229 Lincoln Way on the ISU
campus in Ames. For more information call 515.294.0970 or
visit <www.littledressesforafrica.org>

All are welcome to the next meeting of the Finance
Council, Tuesday, January 24th, starting at 7:00 pm

LIBRARY BOOK REVIEWS
The WOW Factor:
Bringing the Catholic Faith to Life by William J. O’Malley
William J. O’Malley, S.J. is the author of many books on
spirituality, several of which are in the library. His latest, The
WOW Factor, is a book for those who wonder if their faith has
anything new to say. It brings readers up to date on Catholic
understandings of God, the Bible, our origins, and our future. It
also includes insights from mystics and scientists, saints and
atheists. O’Malley writes that ―Something exhilarating could
happen to your living if you ever owned the truth that the
Unspeakable Holy One, the Architect of infinite quasars and
infinitesimal quanta—the Ultimate Wow—knows you by name,
calls you his, finds you precious.‖

Between Heaven and Mirth:
Why Joy, Humor, and Laughter Are at the Heart
of the Spiritual Life by James Martin
In Between Heaven and Mirth, James Martin assures us that God
wants us to experience joy, to cultivate a sense of holy humor,
and to laugh at life’s absurdities – not to mention our own
humanity. Father Martin invites believers to rediscover the
importance of humor in our daily lives and to embrace an
essential truth: faith leads to joy. Holy people are joyful people,
says Father Martin, offering countless examples of levity in the
stories of biblical heroes and heroines, in the lives of saints and
great spiritual masters. He shows us how the parables are often
the stuff of comedy, and how the gospels reveal Jesus to be a man
with a sense of joy. In fact, Father Martin argues that thinking
about a Jesus without a sense of humor may be close to heretical.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION
In today’s first reading, we hear Samuel respond eagerly, ―Here I
am!‖ each time the Lord calls him. May we, too, be listening for
the call of God in our lives and be ready to say like the psalmist,
―Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will.‖
