The world has not hesitated to raise to divinity, individualswhose lives and missions have been lost in legend.

Historically speaking, none of these legends achieved even afraction of what Muhammad (pbuh) accomplished. And all hisstriving was for the sole purpose of uniting mankind for theworship of One God on the codes of moral excellence.

Muhammad (pbuh) or his followers never at any timeclaimed that he was a Son of God or the God-incarnate or aman with divinity - but he always was and is even todayconsidered as only a Messenger chosen by God.

Today after a lapse of fourteen centuries, the life andteachings of MUHAMMAD (pbuh)have survivedwithout the slightest loss, alteration orinterpolation. They offer the same undying hope fortreating mankind's many ills, which they did when hewas alive.

This is not a claim of Muhammad's (pbuh) followersbut also the inescapable conclusion forced upon by acritical and unbiased history.

Not so this man. Muhammad (peace be up onhim) accomplished so much in such diversefields of human thought and behavior in thefullest blaze of human history.

Every detail of his private life and publicutterances has been accurately documentedand faithfully preserved to our day. Theauthenticities of the record so preserved arevouched for not only by the faithful followersbutalso even by his prejudiced critics.

Muhammad (pbuh) was a teacher, a social reformer,a moral guide, an administrative colossus, a faithfulfriend, a wonderful companion, a devoted husband, aloving father - all in one.

No other man in history ever excelled or equaled himin any of these different aspects of life - but it wasonly for the selfless personality of Muhammad (pbuh)to achieve such incredible perfections.

James A. Michener No other religion in history spread so rapidly as Islam The West has widely believed that this surge of

religion was made possible by the sword. But no modern scholar accepts that idea, and the Quran is

explicit in support of the freedom of conscience. The evidence is strong that Islam welcomed the peoplesof many diverse religions, so long as they behaved themselves and paid extra taxes. Muhammadconstantly taught that Muslims should co-operate with the People of the Book (Jews and Christians).

True, there were often wars between Muslims and either Christians or Jews (sometimes because theolder religions insisted on battle), and the Quran contains passages of primitive violence relating tothose wars. But testimony is overwhelming that followers of the Book were usually given decenttreatment, sanctuary and freedom to worship as they wished.

Many Westerners, accustomed by their history books to believe that Muslims were barbarous infidels, find it difficult to comprehend how profoundly our intellectual life has been influenced by Muslimscholars in the field of science, medicine, mathematics, geography and philosophy. Crusaders who

invaded the Holy Land to fight Muslims returned to Europe with new ideas of love, poetry, chivalry, warfare and government. Our concept of what a university should be was deeply modified by Muslimscholars, who perfected the writing of history and who brought to Europe much Greek learning.

Although Islam originated in Arabia, today only a small percentage (7 percent) of the worlds Muslimsare Arabians, and less than a quarter (20 percent) speak Arabic as their native language.

More than most religions, Islam preaches the brotherhood of all races, colours and nations within itsfold. Muhammad himself probably had exactly the same skin colouring as Jesus a very suntanned white but today his followers embrace all colours: black men from Africa, yellow men from China, brown menfrom Malaya, white men from Turkey.

(James A. Michener, Islam The Misunderstood Religion, in the Readers Digest (American Edition, May 1955).

Mohammad never assigned himself a statusmore than a common man and a messengerof God. People had faith in him when he was
