Baan Rim Pa“Location, location, location” as the saying goes. It doesn’t matter how good you are, if you’re not in the right location, forget it. That’s why Tom McNamara, Baan Rim Pa creator, almost 20 years ago decided to convert his two-storied teak house overlooking Kalim and Patong Bays, into a restaurant.

Baan Rim Pa has since become one of Thailand’s best-known and most highly awarded restaurants, with a reputation stretching much further. It is perched on a cliff , with panoramic views of Patong Beach to the Bay of Kalim and the constant swish of the surf on the rocks below. It didn’t take long to decide on a meal, as we’d already studied the Baan Rim Pa cookbook that afternoon and had a fair idea of what we wanted to sample. However, the well-trained staff were there to assist with recommendations.

We chose four plates: Goong Choob Paeng Thod (battered and deep-fried shrimp), Gaeng Liang Goong (herbed soup of vegetables and prawns), Panaeng Ped (creamy curry with duckling) and Pla Nueng Manow (steamed fi sh with lemon), with a bottle of Allegrini, Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico 1999 from Baan Rim Pa’s award-winning wine cellar.

Spotlights highlighted dancing branches next to our table, the atmosphere that brings thousands of diners each year was in full swing – and the food arrived. The Panaeng Ped deserves special mention. The duck, simmered in coconut milk, is sweet and just a touch piquant. The shrimps, plump, fresh and tender were served with Chinese plum sauce and a red chili dip. The herbed soup was perhaps outdone by the stronger fl avours of the duck and prawn, and when the steamed fi sh arrived I found the meat fell off the bone and the lemon perfectly complemented the fi sh.

There are some restaurants that can, for a fl eeting moment, encapsulate the word ‘romantic’ and then there are those that fl ing their tacky version of romance full in your face. Here, with Tommy Doyle playing classics on his grand piano, the sea breeze and the delicate aromas of world-class cooking in the air, The House by the Sea was the most romantic place I’d eaten in a long, long while.

Winners of the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence from 2002 to 2009, Baan Rim Pa delivers the defi nitive Phuket dining experience.

Baan Yin DeeFusion Restaurant & Grand Piano BarFew destinations in the world can host an evening of enjoyment with sophisticated flair and unrivalled ambience. Unprecedented luxury and comfort characterise Baan Yin Dee. “Warm Welcome Home”, the English translation of Baan Yin Dee, is an apt name for this upscale retreat that truly is to be discovered. Personalised service with traditional Thai charm and hospitality, the pleasing sounds of the piano and the superb dinner make for a relaxing occasion.

The menu boasts a delightful variety of Western and Thai dishes. The Thai Appetizer Trio is a superb sampling of Thai favourites. The Tod Man Goong, a deep fried shrimp cake, the Por Pia Tod, crispy spring rolls and the Kanom Pang Nah Moo, deep fried minced pork on sliced mini baguette, offer a welcome introduction in some tastes and textures of Thai food. Complement it with a cream of forest mushroom soup topped with a milky foam and deep fried mushroom, the Mushroom Latte, and the evening is off to great beginnings.

A wine to savour while enjoying the selection of International food is the Italian red, VOGA Quattro 2007, a blend of four varietals that fuse to provide a flavour to accompany all dishes.

The international and fusion flare at BYD come alive in the dishes so delicately prepared and presented. The White Snapper in crispy Pancetta skin served with warm lentil salad and potato basil straw and the BYD Fusion, chicken breast stuffed with scallops and served with herb gnocchi and asparagus scented cherry tomato lay testimony to Chef Fabien’s creativity in preparing and introducing ingredients to produce delectable delights.

Sweet treats are a distinctive roundup to a wonderful meal and enhance the timeless quality of the evening. The Chocolate Fondant, a hot chocolate cake with a melting chocolate centre, is a decadent dessert and tasteful treat.

And a terrific roundup to the meal? Cappuccino, ice cream and a spectacular view of Patong Beach!

An upscale venue catering to tourists and locals alike, BYD provides an unsurpassed dining experience. With superb food, piano music and hospitality in a stylish environment, it doesn’t get any better than this.

Café de FranceThat a quaint yet luxurious boutique hotel setting while seated al fresco on a second floor terrace that overlooks the serene environment of a swimming pool and lush gardens in the early evening hours isn’t the most enjoyable way to savour a dining occasion is an understatement. Dine on a delicious array of French food amongst the traditional delicacies offered from the cuisine with the true tastes and textures derived from the ingredients and the experience is... exceptional and formidable. The newest place to dine in the Patong situated Royal Phawadee Village, Café de France, holds a gem of authentic French gastronomic dishes of appetizers, entrées and desserts. Looking for the point to discover this wonderful cuisine, a heritage and art so dear to the French heart? The restaurant’s Menu de dégustation for two people holds a superb selection. The Feuilleté d’escargots aux champignons, crème d’ail et cognac or Snails with a creamy mushroom garlic and cognac sauce in puff pastry offers a more than worthy beginning into the tastes and textures of the food. Similiarly creamy and saucy in nature typical to the French style of cooking, the Duo de St Jacques et crevettes à la Normande, crème au Calvados, a Duet of scallops and shrimps in a Normandy style with a scented Calvados (apple brandy) creamy sauce, holds similiar delectable delights.Equally to be relished are the poultry and meat dishes, the Escalopes de foie gras de canard poêlées aux fruits rouges, compote au miel sauvage or Pan-fried duck foie gras escalope with red fruits and wild honey compote and the Filet mignon d’agneau rôti, sauce aux cèpes et Cognac or Roasted lamb fillet with a scented cep mushrooms and Cognac sauce. Perfectly-cooked ingredients embellished with delicate sauces make these dishes savoury delights to remember.Choice foods need to be complemented with fine wine and decadent desserts. The rose wine G de GINESTET from Bordeaux proved to be the best wine for the various seafood, poultry and meat dishes and the Fondant au chocolat avec sa glace vanille or the Chocolate fondant served with vanilla ice cream was a delectable finish to the meal.An authentic French cuisine abundant with delicacies served in an exquisite setting with warm hospitality is an occasion not to be missed. Oh là là.

La BoucherieOften it is the small pleasures that you find in a restaurant that make a dining experience stand out from all others. Good food at a good price, friendly and effi cient service and a cosy atmosphere are just several ingredients that contribute to an evening out and encourage you to come back to that special dining place.

La Boucherie is a French steakhouse located in the newly built Royal Phawadee Village – a sumptuous and quiet boutique resort in Patong. An intimate and relaxed ambience alongside great steaks and French specialities characterise this restaurant, off ering a welcoming escape from the nearby busy and bustling area. Unwind with a glass of wine at an outdoor table in front of the restaurant or in air-conditioned comfort inside and enjoy some superb food.

Wine is a natural accompaniment to a meal and French wine is often a favourite. We enjoyed a Château Vieux Coudard, Côtes de Bourg AOC, 2003, a Cabernet Sauvignon that proved to be a wonderful complement to our appetizers and main course.

The evening fare began with appetizers of a Beef Carpaccio and Basil and Warm Goat Cheese Salad – delightful delicacies of a perfect combination of meat and cheese with complimentary textures and delicately spiced tastes. These were followed by two specialty dishes of the house, a Steak Tartare served with pommes forestières or fried potatoes with garlic and butter and vegetables and an Entrecôte with a Bearnaise sauce and a baked potato and vegetables. Delicious entrées and accompaniments!

Great beginnings have great endings and they are generally tasty delights that leave you craving for more. Dessert provided some wonderful treats consisting of a Tiramisu and a Crème Brulée, which were sweet fi xings that provided a wonderful topping to the meal.

A varied menu of a mix of wonderful and reasonably-priced food that includes perfectly cooked steaks and dishes from France is a good reason to stop at La Boucherie and enjoy the dishes available. Top it off with a cosy and relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff , and you have a restaurant that provides a very pleasant and satisfying experience.

Concaved Beach RestaurantThat beachside restaurants have a special nature is a well-known fact amongst local residents and visitors to Phuket. Lunch or a cold drink after a swim in the sea, or, better yet, a sunset cocktail where one can admire the changing colours of the setting sun and sky and enjoy a candlelight dinner, are ideal moments to enjoy and just what these casual dining spots have to off er.

Concaved Beach Restaurant is such an intriguing place to go. With a name that is derived from the fact that it is located right in the middle of Patong Beach, this restaurant boasts sweeping views of the beach and bay and serves special cocktails of which the Patong New Wave and the Phuket Blue Sky come highly recommended as well as French, Thai and international food. Seafood can be ordered from the Savoey, a popular Patong restaurant that is also part of the Safari Beach Hotel.

A Seafood Salad was an appropriate start to our meal. A mixture of clams, mussels, scallops and prawns came to our table as an elegant display that was nestled on a bed of lettuce, carrots, red cabbage and diced peppers. A light and refreshing appetizer ideal also as a lunch. With cold beers in hand, this was the perfect way to enjoy the ambiance and settle into a relaxing evening.

A specialty of the restaurant’s French chef – Pork Medallions in a mushroom sauce – was the entrée of the evening. Tender yet thick slices of pork were accompanied by potato gratin dauphinois and a medley of fried vegetables. Other dishes appeared as equally tempting: a Grilled White Snapper with a zuccini top and red pepper sauce and a Duck Breast served with potato cheese cream and cepes.

Dessert was a sweet delight with a creamy topping, a Mocca Cake with Cioccolato, which is baked in Beachway, a bakery that is also part of the Safari Beach Hotel group. A decadent treat to fi nish the meal!

For casual beachside dining and a special fl avour of French, Thai and international foods, the middle of the beach, Concaved Beach Restaurant, is an enjoyable and relaxing place to go.

Two ChefsFrom the minds of many can come the idea to provide a guest a good meal out. However, it takes the expertise and creativity of ‘two chefs’ to produce a concept that fulfi lls that promise and is more than just a cut above the rest. Well prepared dishes, which are appealing to the palate are the makeshift of a dinner out. But by adding that extra touch of creativity, superb hospitality and service with great attention to detail in surroundings that exuberate smart casual sophistication, there is indeed an evening to remember.

The people behind the Two Chefs concept, Billy and Henrik, have produced several dining venues in Phuket. Their third and newly opened location in Kata Center, under the management of ‘third chef’ Krister, exemplifi es this notion of fi ne dining. A warm ambience and refi nement pervade the open aired and alfresco eating areas including the open rooftop bar and seating area on the second fl oor. International cuisine with strong underlying tones of a Scandinavian infl uence and Thai food are exquisite to the eye and even more to the taste.

A medley of starters that include Toast Skagen with prawns, dill, chili and mayonnaise, Homemade Pepper Smoked Norwegian Salmon with rosepepper crème, roasted chiabatta and salad, Tzatzki and Garlic Bread provided delighful tastes and texture combinations. Accompanied by a glass of white wine, the appetizers off ered an insight into the delights that were yet to come.

From the selection of wines, our host Krister recommended an Australian red, a Hardy Cabernet Shivaz, for the main course. What a superb choice that complemented the Pork File ala tzatzki with herb gravy, roasted vegetables served with baked potato and the Pepper Steak, Two Chefs most famous steak served with creamy brandy fl avoured pepper sauce, baked tomato sautéed vegetables and potato gratin! The dishes were incomparable – perfectly cooked and topped with savoury sauces and served with side dishes.

A sampling of the marvelous desserts served at Two Chefs continued to provide further enjoyment. A blueberry cheesecake, a brownie and an apple crumble served amidst creams and glazes was a perfect top off to the meal.

Expect magnifi cent food, excellent service and friendly hospitality in a warm ambience. Two Chefs off ers an ideal opportunity to enjoy and savour a memorable evening out.

Da VinciMama Mia! Conceptualisations and ingenuity in the form of Italian cuisine come to Nai Harn! Relish an authentic style of cooking of a diverse array of favourites and new combinations served in a cozy ambiance or savour pizzas in a separate casual seating area by a wood-fi red oven.

Good beginnings to an evening meal start with an aperitif! A Campari and soda and a gin and tonic off ered the opportunity to take in and relish the open aired-surroundings of Da Vinci of wooden seating outside and subtle lighting including chandeliers highlighting the rattan furniture and walls tastefully decorated with paintings. The children’s play area is a welcoming aspect for parents who can enjoy a relaxing meal while keeping their kids in sight.

Welcoming tastes and sights abound at Da Vinci with tantalizing temptations served from the kitchen with fresh ingredients as signature items in every dish. Our fi rst adventure into this all-important notion was the antipasti of Bruschetta, grilled sliced bread with chopped tomato, garlic and olives. Refreshing and with pleasing seasonings, it was followed by the primi piatti course of a trio of pastas. The Lasagne Al Forno, home made lasagne layers of pasta made with beef and tomato sauce, the Spaghetti Gamberi Zucchine Vodka, spaghetti with prawns, zucchini and vodka and the Spaghetti Neri Pomodorini Calamari E/ Gamberi, black spaghetti with tomato, squid and prawn, off ered unique tastes and texture combinations with the richness of their fl avours refl ected in the quality of the ingredients.

Good wine is also a highlight of a meal. The Palazzo Della Torre Veronese Indicazione Geografi ca Tipica 2004, Allegrini was an ideal red to complement the fi rst two courses and continued to match the secondi piatti and pizze courses, the Scaloppine Al Vino Bianco Con Patate. These two appetizing escalopes with white wine served with potatoes were perfectly cooked fi llets of pork. Pizza is also a must traditional Italian fare and the Al Proscuitto Crudo, tomato Mozzarella cheese and Parma ham is one not to be missed!

The Semifreddo All Arancio and the Semifreddo All Amaretto were the indulging cap to the meal. This dolci course consisted of delightful home made orange and amaretto sherberts.

For superlative Italian cuisine with the freshest of ingredients, be sure to try Da Vinci and discover a renaissance of food.

White BoxSophisticated and intimate yet lively and entertaining. These characteristics are the medley which form the ideal dining and nightlife venue, which surprise and please the most discerning guests. Combine these elements with an unsurpassed beachfront setting with views of the Andaman Sea and the setting sun at dusk and there is the perfect location for a memorable evening out.

White Box on Kalim Bay off ers such an extraordinary dining and social occasion out. Once a house nestled on the beach and known to locals as White Box due to its colour and shape, it was refurbished by its present owner to a restaurant and bar. This two and a half storey building holds an outdoor rooftop bar and both an outdoor and air conditioned dining area on the fi rst fl oor. The original theme of white has been retained while the colour blue marks the Mediterranean cuisine that is served.

Congenial host and owner Marc Audibert and Chef Vincent Denayer provide an unmatched combination of warm hospitality and fi ne cuisine. Appetizers of Tuna Tartar in sesame oil and balsamico dressing, avocado and tomato tartar and Pan Fried Rock Lobster and Foie Gras wth cantaloupe, mango and apple salsa and lavender essence – unique and innovative combinations of seafood and meat with fruit and vegetables – provide a sight and taste adventure into the glorious food at White Box.

A superlative main course also serves to capture and continue the exquisite recommendations that are just savoured. The Grilled Wagyu Beef Sirloin with grande escolha reduction, fi gs, plum and mizuna salad is a superbly cooked Waygu steak served with a divine array of sauce and salad. The seafood delight of the Steamed Snow Fish with shitake mashed potato, porcini and saff ron cream sauce with clams is a delectable fusion of an array of vegetables and spices with a moistly cooked and fl avourful fi sh.

Desserts also hold a pleasant array of suprises! The Chocolate Souffl é with vanilla ice cream and the Pineapple Carpaccio with spices caramel and coconut sorbet are treats to fi nish the meal.

After dinner, move to the party upstairs and get a taste of Latino, Salsa, Hip-Hop, R&B and more that White Box features on weekend nights. Dance with the tunes into the late hours of the evening!

A superlative beachside location with both intimacy and a lively social and nightlife scene, an outstanding cuisine and superb service make White Box a venue to frequent.

MoMo Café‘Modern Living Modern Eating’ – a slogan and concept that becomes an abbreviated version of the name of a restaurant that embraces the notion of quality cuisine using the freshest of ingredients and is set in a modern contemporary environment. And this place to dine is kid friendly! Yes, kids can have a meal to their liking from their own menu and then enjoy themselves at the Kids World.

Comfortable couches, tables and chairs amid soft lighting set the scene for a relaxing meal at the chic restaurants at Courtyard by Marriott at Kamala Beach and the Courtyard by Marriott at Surin Beach and the air conditioned restaurant in the Courtyard by Marriott at Patong Beach. These places to dine feature an open kitchen where the curious can see the preparation of International and Asian dishes.

An ensemble of starters and entrées that displayed not only the tastes and textures of the food but also the presentation were suggested. The Kao Soi Gai, the Chiang Mai Noodle Curry with Chicken was an exquisite delight of sweet curry with noodles and toppings as was the Smoked Chicken and Mango Vietnamese Roll with spicy lime dipping sauce. The Pot Sticker Dumplings, which were pan-fried and fi lled with chives, pork and served with spicy soya dipping sauce and the Garlic Prawns in Cream Sauce served with herb bread were also a welcome and pleasing medley of sensations. The pizza was the Prosciutto Crudo of tomato sauce, Mozzarella cheese and mushrooms and with shaved prosciutto and Rocket leaves.

A Western fare was the preference for the main course with the Rotisserie 1/2 Chicken coated with spicy MoMo sauce with chips and Rocket salad and the Wood Roasted Rosemary Lamb Rack with zuchini, eggplant ragout and roasted potatoes being the recommended selection. Once again, deliciously spiced and well-presented dishes continued the enjoyment of the meal.

Wines and desserts are true complements to a meal. The white Australian Long Flat, Semillion-Sauvignon Blanc, 2006 and the red Australian The Little Penguin Cabernet, 2005, which won the Best Buy Wine Spectator Award, were ideal ‘wines by the glass’ for the meal. And to top things off , an apple pie and the Mövenpick ice cream Maple Walnut, were ideal sweet treats.

For a fi rst-rate meal of some favourite International dishes and tantalizing foods from Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam and the ‘MoMo Regional Cuisine’ (delights from Thailand) try MoMo Café. Couples and families will be happy they did!

Blue Elephant Governor Mansion PhuketCooking School & RestaurantThe discovery of a new and outstanding dining venue where one can savour exquisite traditional Thai cuisine and admire some history and culture of Phuket in a setting of unsurpassed ambiance is a not-to-be-missed experience. Top it off with the fact that the chef responsible for the food and owner of the restaurant is none other than Chef Nooror Somany Steppé, founder of the Blue Elephant group, and the table is set for a fine gourmet evening.

The newly opened Blue Elephant Governor Mansion Phuket Cooking School & Restaurant is the 13th restaurant in the Blue Elephant Group chain. Located in a landmark elegant mansion of Sino-Portuguese architecture that was built in 1903 and once was the governor of Phuket’s home, a meal offers not only dishes created by a HAPA (Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards 2008-2010) for ‘One of the Most Creative Chefs in Asia’ winner, but an insight into the architecture and décor of the times.

The heart of any fine dining experience is the elaborate dishes elegantly displayed and subtly and exquisitely spiced. The Royal Thai Banquet includes an array of starters, soups, main courses and desserts, which range in degrees of spiciness and represent an innovative approach to Thai cooking with a spectrum of recipes from the past and present with a look to the future.

Starters in the menu include Chor Muang, a steamed flower shaped dumpling, Doi Kham Salad, a purple eggplant salad with grilled scallops, Labb Salmon, a salmon tartar and Black Chicken Crispy Spring Rolls. The enticing soups include a choice of Tom Kha Kai Black Chicken, a soup of coconut milk and galangal and the Tom Klong Wild Red Sea Bass, a spicy and sour soup.

The main courses also offer a tantalizing variety of seafood and meats that are well prepared. Nooror’s Massaman Lamb is a coconut milk curry of lamb, potatoes, peanuts and cashew nuts as described in a poem by King Rama II in the 19th century. Mains also include Duck with Tamarind Sauce, Black Chicken Green Curry, Phad Sator Koong, prawns with parkia in shrimp paste and Bamboo Fish, Parrot fish cooked in a bamboo case.

Exceptional Thai dishes created and revitalized by Chef Nooror and served in a stunning historical building with outstanding hospitality and professional service, make the Blue Elephant a choice and not-to-be-missed restaurant on any discerning diner’s list.

"Into the Med", one of the restaurants at the Evason Phuket & Six Senses Spa, established its reputation by offering modern Mediterranean cuisine coupled with excellent wines and a stunning panoramic view over the Andaman Sea.

Raising the bar higher, chef Thomas Jakobi's Modern Logical Cuisine showcases his latest innovations in the form of new, creative interpretations of a cuisine that has both visual and textural appeal. The taste and focus on fresh, wholesome, local ingredients are tantamount.

The wine program, created by our resident sommelier, has recently been granted the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence.

The wine concept is based on mainly indigenous Mediterranean grape varieties and focuses on organic and biodynamic wine producers. Unique wines from small wineries are paired daily with seasonal dishes.
