Baan Rim PaLocation, location, location as the saying goes. It doesnt matter how good you are, i youre not in the right location, orgetit. Thats why Tom McNamara, Baan Rim Pa creator, almost 20 yearsago decided to convert his two-storied teak house overlookingKalim and Patong Bays, into a restaurant.

Baan Rim Pa has since become one o Thailands best-knownand most highly awarded restaurants, with a reputation stretchingmuch urther. It is perched on a clif, with panoramic views o Patong Beach to the Bay o Kalim and the constant swish o the sur on the rocks below. It didnt take long to decide on a meal, as wedalready studied the Baan Rim Pa cookbook that a ternoon and hada air idea o what we wanted to sample. However, the well-trainedstaf were there to assist with recommendations.

We chose our plates: Goong Choob Paeng Thod (batteredand deep- ried shrimp), Gaeng Liang Goong (herbed soup o

vegetables and prawns), Panaeng Ped (creamy curry with duckling)and Pla Nueng Manow (steamed sh with lemon), with a bottle o Allegrini, Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico 1999 rom Baan RimPas award-winning wine cellar.

Spotlights highlighted dancing branches next to our table, theatmosphere that brings thousands o diners each year was in ullswing and the ood arrived. The Panaeng Ped deserves specialmention. The duck, simmered in coconut milk, is sweet and just atouch piquant. The shrimps, plump, resh and tender were servedwith Chinese plum sauce and a red chili dip. The herbed soup wasperhaps outdone by the stronger avours o the duck and prawn, and when the steamed sh arrived I ound the meat ell of thebone and the lemon per ectly complemented the sh.

There are some restaurants that can, or a eeting moment, encapsulate the word romantic and then there are those that

ing their tacky version o romance ull in your ace. Here, with Tommy Doyle playing classics on his grand piano, the sea breeze and the delicate aromas o world-class cooking in the air, The House by the Sea wasthe most romantic place Id eaten in a long, longwhile.

Winners o the Wine Spectator Award o Excellence rom 2002 to 2010, Baan Rim Pa deliversthe de nitive Phuket dining experience.

An ensemble o entres that revealed not only the tasteand texture o the ood but also the presentation weresuggested. Phad Thai Goong, or Fried Noodles with prawns,is a well-known and popular ood amongst both Thais and

oreigners. At the Courtyard by Marriott at Surin Beach, theche prepares the dish with a twist, cooking it not with theprawns in it as is traditionally prepared but with the prawnsgrilled on a skewer on the side.

Western are was the pre erence or the main course withthe Roasted Hal Chicken coated with spicy MoMo saucewith chips and Rocket salad and the Andaman Pizza withtomato sauce, Mozzarella cheese, pineapple and capsicum.

Once again, deliciously spiced and well-presented dishesadded to the enjoyment o the meal.

Wines and desserts were true complements to this meal. The Australian Little Yering Chardonnay, 2008 and theAustralian The Little Penguin Cabernet, 2005, which wonthe Best Buy Wine Spectator Award, were ideal wines by theglass or the meal. And to top things of, an apple pie and theMvenpick ice cream Maple Walnut, were ideal sweet treats.

For a rst-rate meal with an ideal mix o international

dishes and tantalizing local are, try MoMo Ca in the threeCourtyard by Marriott resorts in Phuket. Couples and amilieswill be happy they did.
