WHERE IS VENICE SITUATED?

Venice is the main town of our region: Veneto.There are 60.000 inhabitants but the population is always decreasing. Venice is situated in the middle of a lagoon in the North-East of Italy.There are many churches, historical palaces and buildings, squares, shops and bridges.

SQUAREThe most famous square in Venice is Saint Mark’s square.It is always very crowded because a lot of foreign people go to visit it.In the square there are: -the bell tower;-the Doge’s palace- Saint Marco’s cathedral.

THE EMBLEM

The emblem of Venice is situated in Saint Mark’s square.It is a winged lion.

BRIDGESThe newest bridge is Calatrava bridge.It was designed in 1997 by a Spanish architect and engineer: Santiago Calatrava.

The most famous bridge is Rialto bridge, which is the oldest one in Venice. On both sides there are some shops, many are jeweller's shops.

Another famous bridge is the Liberty Bridge . It is between Mestre and Venice and joins the dry land with the city.

The Bridge of Sighs (il ponte dei sospiri) joins the Doge’s palace with the old prisons.

VENICE CARNIVAL

One of the most famous fancy dress party is Venice carnival.It is celebrated in the second week of February.People go to Saint Mark’s square with a mask and a fancy dress typical of Venice.

GONDOLA

The gondola is the typical means of transport of Venice.It is known all over the world. On every gondola there is a gondolier that rows the boat and takes people around Venice .
