sickle cell Disorder & thalassemiaAnalysis of HaemoglobinsCapillary Electrophoresis using an acid buffer system (CEofix™ HbA1c) is able to separate both normal and abnormal haemoglobins. This allows for the separation and quantitation of glycated haemoglobin such as HbA1c that is well separated from most interfering haemoglobins. Glycated haemoglobin is used for screening and diagnosis of both types of diabetes.When using an alkaline buffer (CEofix™ hbA2), it is possible to quantify hbA2 & hbf. Using both methods, clinically relevant variants (hbs, hbc, hbD-punjab, hbe, hbo-Arab, hb lepore) as well as 15 of 20 clinically silent variants tested are separated from HbA. A presumptive identification of hb barts, hbh and hb constant spring are obtained using the alkaline kit.1

Abuse of AlcoholAnalysis of Carbohydrate Deficient Transferrin (CDT)Analysis of CDT is today well accepted as a marker for regular and excessive use of alcohol. The CEofix™ CDT kit is a high resolution and highly reproducible method. It also allows for the identification of transferrin variants (Tf-B, Tf-C, Tf-D) and quantitation of the % CDT. 2, 3 The kit is also used for identification of congenital Disorders of glycosylation (cDg).4

Analysis of natural productsMany natural products are based on plants, plant extracts or fermented products. They may be food constituents, herbal medicines, wine, beer, soda, milk etc. Natural products are usually a complex mixture of a wide variety of constituents. They are composed of small organic and inorganic compounds, amino acids, biogenic amines, peptides or proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, food additives etc. Follow-up during production, such as in the case of food processing or fermentation, is important. Capillary electrophoresis is well-suited to analyse all components which are charged or polar.Several kits are available and allow straightforward and robust analysis of those constituents.

Analysis for industry and forensic applications

For environmental analysis of surface water and waste water the anions and cations analysis are well suited. Other applications may need carboxylic acid analysis or amines, including aliphatic amines in different matrices.In seized drugs, several basic constituents as well as impurities may be analysed to assess the origin of drugs. Explosive residues analysis may cover inorganic anions and cations but also carbohydrates.

biopharma applicationsCapillary Electrophoresis is well-suited for protein analyses using SDS MW or cIEF kits (from Sciex Separations), for example for mAb typing and purity analysis. In some cases a complementary technique may be useful, such as the CEofix™ NTMP kit.The biopharma sector also deals with fermentation and cell-culture. To follow up those processes, it is meaningful to analyse lactic acid or production of ammonium and the availability of glucose. The production of IgG or other proteins may be analysed in the supernatants.Capillary electrophoresis is also helpful for the cleaning validation and checking of buffers used for purification.
