Live Music Mondays

This coming Monday, March 20 brings ‘Finding Emo’ to the Horsethief Creek Pub in Radium from 7 pm to 9 pm. They are some great talent and it will be a fantastic evening. The following Monday has ‘Smokin’ Ray & the Detectors’ performing. That is always a good show. Thanks to ‘The Horse’ for providing such a fantastic venue supporting musicians around the valley. Mondays have become a good night to get out.

Riddliculous

At 7 am a train moving 90 km/h leaves Vancouver heading for Calgary. At 8 am a train travelling 110 km/h leaves Calgary heading for Vancouver. Which train will be closer to Calgary when they meet? See page 9.

Balanced Sole Foot Care

Many of us neglect to care for our feet even though they have to carry us for life. Kathy of ‘Balanced Sole Foot Care’ is a Professional Foot Care Nurse providing mobile private foot care in the Columbia Valley. Services include circulation, sensation and ulcer development assessments, diabetic foot care training, treatment of fungus, heavy calluses, corns and deformed or thickened nails. Nursing costs are tax de-ductable and covered by some health plans. Call Kathy at 250-439-9467 for more infor-mation.

Later

If procrastination was an Olympic sport, I would compete in it later.

Go For a Visit

In many ways, I am not a very good son. Mom lives in Castlegar, only a few hours away, and I rarely go visit her. So I am not the best person to comment on visiting family. But Watson and I do visit in Columbia House and Columbia Garden Village fairly often. We see lot of folks living in those centres and mostly, they are bored. A few ask me if I know their family and if I could please say, ’Hello’ to their family members when I see them. Moral of the story? Go visit your folks that are in a care facility. You will brighten their day.

WE ARE

HIRING!

Robservations

What is your status in this world? Are you a contributor? Or are you a consumer? In other words, are you a giver, or are you a taker? Because there is a huge difference between the two. It is pretty easy to be a taker. We can feel as entitled as we like and expect the world to deliver to us. Often that includes our friends, spouses, employers, family and more. We feel that just by being born to this planet, things are owed to us. Takers are often depressed and disap-pointed when things do not come their way. Expectations are not always met and that can lead to displeasure. It is just as easy to be a giver. Everyone that you meet has some needs. Some-times it is just a smile or a compliment, other times you are actually helping some-one move. And lots of chances in between. As long as you are giving from the heart, with no expectations of return, life will be wonderful. Giving feels great and leads to euphoria and contentment. A much different experi-ence than taking.

Crushing

I wish I knew who lowered the car jack on me. The suspension is killing me.

Home Health Care

Are you having mobility issues? How about other problems that can get in the way of your everyday life? Invermere Pharmasave has a Home Health Care department downstairs from the main store. They carry all kinds of health and mobility equipment including walkers, wheelchairs, bath seats, canes and hundreds of other products. They also offer a rental program for many of the items. Stop in and see what is avail-able today.

Hiring in Fairmont

If you are looking for a fun, fast-paced working environment, check out Fairmont Pizza & Ice Cream Parlour. They offer a great starting wage, super perks and bene-fits, plenty of hours and an enjoyable place to work. Personally, I love their food and the friendly atmosphere when you are there. Stop in and see John or Vern about an exciting job opportunity.

Watson’s

Waddle

What is my best feature as a hound dog? Is it the love that I give Rob and everyone that we meet? Love is an incredible feature. Is it my ability to just lie around and enjoy a day while Rob is stuck on the computer? He really appre-ciates that but often wonders how I do it. Is it the way I attract other people and ani-mals? It is a lot of fun meeting new people every time we go out somewhere. Is it my love of everywhere and everything that we go and do? I love hiking, camping, fishing, car rides, food, attention and so much more (not necessarily the vet). Is it how smart I am, knowing which places will give treats and which ones will rub my neck and ears? I love some of the places we visit. I think my best feature is the excitement I get in everyday life. I never know what is happening next but I am anxiously waiting to find out. Everyone should live this way. Anticipate that something amazing could happen at any moment. Because amazing things do happen all day. People just fail to see so many of them.

What Year Was It?

The Beatles, then known as ‘The Quarry-men’ had their first recording session, Elvis was inducted to the army, John Diefen-baker became Prime Minister, the Avro Arrow had its debut flight and the first pas-senger jet flights began in a Boeing 707. The Hula Hoop, the TV remote control and the microchip were invented, the Great Chinese Famine began (30 million died), NASA was formed, Sir Edmund Hillary reached the South Pole and 14 year-old Bobbie Fischer became the U.S. chess champion. What year was it? See page 10.

Short Story

Invermere Pest Control

As things begin to warm up, a lot of critters come to life. For years I have had issues with huge ants visiting me in my home. Lots of huge ants. Last year I had Invermere Pest Control pay a visit. I thought I should try something. And what a success! I have not seen a single ant since! What an incredible ser-vice. They offer programs for various pest and weed control. Give Darren a call at 250-688-1235.

I am finding that it is not really hard to meet expenses. They are everywhere.

Ice Out

The curling season is coming to an end in Invermere. This is the final week of the ice in the building. It has been a great season and thanks are due to all the volunteers and staff who keep things going. The Centre will be available for building rentals shortly. The concrete area can hold up to 600 people for huge events and the lounge capacity is about 120 people for a bit more of an intimate adventure. Prices are based on attendance so it is a great set up. Call the Centre at 250-342-3315 for en-quiries.

The Puck Stops Here!

Persistence pays off. This season I re-ceived hundreds of entries into the ‘Where’s the Puck?’ contest but I did see about a dozen names on entries every single week. And two of those have won the grand prize draws. Second place goes to Christina Boucher. She wins gift certificates for Fairmont Pizza & Ice Cream Parlour, The Station Neighbourhood Pub, Rocky River Grill and the Horsethief Creek Pub. First prize goes to Janice Bezaire. Janice wins two golf passes at Fairmont River-side/Mountainside, The Ridge at Copper Point, Windermere Valley Golf Course, Coys Par 3 and Creekside par 3 in Fair-mont. Thanks to all the sponsors and everyone who entered the contest throughout the season.

Tough Lifestyle

It seems that I have always had a weight problem. I just can’t wait to start eating things.

The Thrifty Reporter

Some people brag about how expensive their clothes are. I brag about how cheap they are! You like my dress? Thanks, I bought it at the Invermere Thrift Store for only $5. When the store has abundance of clothing inventory they will hold special sales. Half price or $3/bag sale... these deals are hard to pass up. Now they even have a clear-ance rack. So stop in and check it out. The store hours are Thursday, Friday, Sat-urday 10 am-4 pm. Stop in as often as you can because the racks are restocked daily and remember, the Thrift Store helps many organizations in the valley.

Rustic Birdhouses

Birdwatching is fun. Birds are amazing creatures. A great way to kick it up a notch is to put up some birdhouses around your property. Tex at High Country Antiques and Collecti-bles is building some beautiful rustic bird-houses. He does a variety of styles and colours that fit wonderfully into any natural settings. Stop in at High Country and check it out. He is located in the bottom of the Bavin Glass building up near the crossroads.

Great Job Opportunity

Borrego Signs is hiring! They are a great company here in Invermere. They design and manufacture signs, stickers, beer taps and lots of other things (they even have a 3-D printer). It is a great working environ-ment. The ideal candidate will be good at inde-pendent and team work, good with their hands and tools and can do a bit of heavy lifting. Woodworking and computer skills are also an asset but not a priority. You will learn lots on the job. Check out the ad on page 2 for more infor-mation. Send your resume to Karen at [email protected].

Canadian Sports Trivia Answer

In 1934, the NHL held its first All-Star game as a fundraiser for injured Leaf’s star, Ace Bailey. Bailey suffered severe head trauma when knocked to the ice by Bruins’ defenseman, Eddie Shore. Shore never played another NHL game after the incident.

Clueless

Why many people say that I am ignorant, I will never know.

Daylight Saving Time

I see and hear a lot of people discussing Daylight Saving Time and how it should be eliminated. I have to admit that I hate los-ing that hour of sleep in the spring. It should be on a Friday afternoon, shorten-ing the work week. But I did enjoy a barbecue without a head-lamp on Sunday. And the change is usu-ally a sign of spring approaching for me. So really, it doesn’t matter to me if we have DST or not. It is definitely not some-thing that I am losing sleep over hahaha.

Millennial

I feel that I deserve a much greater sense of entitlement than I actually have.

Start of Spring

The Spring Equinox happens on March 20 this year. The Equinox marks the time when the Sun crosses the ‘Celestial Equa-tor’ and the amount of daylight becomes more than the amount of darkness in the northern hemisphere. This is considered the scientific beginning of the spring season as things should be warming up and beginning to grow. It is a beautiful time of year.

Tax Returns

It is that time of year again. Lucky us, taxes are due. If you would like someone to do your individual tax return, give Lisa at LMS Consulting a call. She has 15 years bookkeeping experience and will do a quick, affordable, confidential job for you. Give her a call at 250-688-2978.

It Was That Year

(From page 4) In 1958, a house cost $12,750 and the average annual income was $4,600. The Peace Symbol was de-signed, Jamie Lee Curtis was born, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald was launched, the first Toyota and Datsun vehicles were sold in the U.S. and Visa and American Express were introduced.

Reel Paddling Film Festival

There is a great film festival happening at Panorama on Friday, March 31 from 7 pm to 9 pm. It will highlight non-motorized wa-ter sports such as kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddling and more. There will be prize giveaways, lots of friendly folks and food and drinks will also be available. Come on out and get stoked up for our upcoming summer. This valley is incredible for paddle sports. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for kids 12 and under.

Happy Husband

I have the best wife in British Columbia. The other one lives in Manitoba.

Saint Patrick

Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, is known for bringing Christianity to Ireland. His legends include using a shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity, converting the high king of Tara to Christianity by eluding an ambush through prayer and banishing all snakes from Ireland. It is also said that he carried a staff (stick) that he stuck in the ground when speaking. Some of his messages took so long that the staff would take root, grow and provide shade. This Friday, March 17, is St Patrick’s Day. Many folks celebrate by consuming green foods and beverages or wearing green clothes to commemorate the saint.

Good for a Laugh

I love to laugh and I was not disappointed last Saturday at the Horsethief Creek Pub. Yukyuks on Tour always does a great job. I can’t imagine being a comedian in a pub where many folks are not really paying attention but these guys always do a great job of leading folks into humour. Watch for the next show.

Where I Was

The photo on page 6 is from out front of a local business. Tex at High Country An-tiques & Collectibles has a lot of vintage items such as this tractor. Check out his rustic birdhouses and more.

KIJHL Playoffs

Kimberley is up 3 games to 1 over Creston and they play tonight (Monday, press day). All the other series have been completed with Beaver Valley, Osoyoos and Chase advancing to the next round. There has been some strong play by all these teams. Creston will be hosting the Cyclone-Taylor Cup so they will get a bye into the final tournament. I wonder who will be joining them from the Kootenay International Jun-ior Hockey League.

Class Act

‘Let’s get out there and show them what we are made of!” –Biology Lab Instructor.

Exciting Brier

Congratulations to the Gushue team from Newfoundland on winning this year’s Brier, the Canadian Men’s Curling Champion-ship. It was Gushue’s 14th appearance at the Brier but the first one on home turf. It was a very exciting time for Newfoundland.

Are You Listening?

There are lots of books out there about being a good speaker but very few about being a good listener. Listening is an im-portant life skill. We all want to meet others but often we just want to talk at them. A good listener will encourage others to speak and egg them on to tell more. You will ask for more details and learn more. A good listener does not moralize, judge or gossip. You realize that we all have issues and need support, not judgment. A good listener can accept disagreements without hostility. You don’t have to agree with everything your friends believe. Having a good listener actually generates pleasure to a speaker. Be the person that

folks like to hang around. Be patient and be a good listener.

Age Doesn’t Matter

What age do you consider old? Depending on your current age, the answer to that question varies. I am in my mid-fifties now, an age that seemed ancient when I was a teenager. I am a bit slower than I have been but I am still trying and learning new things every day. In my mind, I am older than I was but I am not yet old. When will I be old? A pretty good answer is when I ‘start to stop’. When I quit trying to do things then I will concede that I have gotten old. So keep at it folks. Stay active both mentally and physically and you will delay old age by years.

Waiting Patiently

Winter has definitely lingered on this year. We still have quite a bit of snow hanging around but it is starting to fade. Watson is loving exploring the few patches of soil.
