Sheila D. Collins, Professor Emerita of PoliticalScience, William Paterson University
Gertrude Schaffner Goldberg, Professor Emerita of Social Policy, Adelphi University
The global inancial crisis of 2007-2008 was the
most severe since the Great Depression. This book is
a systematic evaluation of the parallels between theGreat Depression and the 2007-2008 globaleconomic meltdown. Although many books havebeen written on this topic, the unique aspect of this
book is the analysis of the positive and negative
lessons for contemporary policy-making of the NewDeal response to the crisis, through viewing both theNew Deal and the recent economic crisis in
combination with the environmental crises of botheras.
Integrating a unique blend of disciplines, thisvolume introduces some possible ways of escapingour malaise, approaches that were begun but neverfully realized in the 1930s, some that were raised as
possibilities by popular movements but never
allowed onto the political agenda, or approaches toproblems that were simply unforeseen in an earlierera. Thus, the book presents a set of guideposts,
some beneicial, some cautionary, for the future.

P When Government Helped
“In an age when government intervention in the economy has become passé, Sheila Collins’ and TrudyGoldberg’s When Government Helped comes as a welcome breath of fresh air. In this remarkable collectionof essays, Collins and Goldberg show us that capitalism lourishes best when it is properly regulated andmanaged in such a way as to promote the common good of all. The best case yet of the necessity for theAmerican citizen to turn to what Franklin Roosevelt called ‘the organized power of government’.”
—David B. Woolner, PhD, Senior Fellow and Hyde Park Resident Historian of the Roosevelt Institute, and co-editor of FDR and the Environment .
“When Government Helped is a revelatory collection of essays. It sheds light on how the New Deal order wasput together, how it transformed American public life, and where it failed to go far enough. Even moreexciting these essays are written in light of the recent near collapse of our economy and draw valuable lessonsfrom the past about how to deal with our present dilemma.”
—Steve Fraser, Co-Editor, The Rise and Fall of the New Deal Order
