    When Can I Tell You?

And Jesus answered and said to him, "Simon, I have somethingto say to you." So he said, Teacher, say it"(Luke 7:40).

We like to be correct, but we just dont like correction. Now, I knowthere are times that we ask questions. All too often, we are only seekingconfirmation of what we have already determined. If that sounds a bit tocynical, just ask yourself what correction you really need and want inyour life.

We call it constructive criticism. I guess we think that if we describe

it as constructive, it will be more readily embraced. Frankly, if you haveworked hard on something and have given it the best effort that you canmuster, there is really only one thing you want: positive reception (andmaybe a little praise). Even if we do receive positive accolades for some-thing we have done, there will often be some helpful person who wants tooffer you the benefit of personal wisdom and observation. Maybe some-one should have gone to Monet and said, You know, if you would have

just added a frog or two to your garden painting, I would have been more

interesting. Well I guess everyone has the right to an opinion. It justdoesnt always need to be expressed.

On the other hand, some things need to be told. Some correctionsneed to be made. Jesus has made it clear that repentance is necessary.Without it, there is no hope. There were times that Jesus expressed ap-

preciation for the faith displayed by His disciples. Then there were timesthat He had to confront them about the miniature size of their faith.Sometimes, those two contrasting expressions came in very close proxim-

ity to one another. Think about it. At one moment, Peter is stepping onthe water in full trust of Jesus. At the next moment, he is fearful ofdrowning. His actions were worthy of comment.

There is something I have learned through the years. Even the diffi-cult criticisms, offered by people that have no room to criticize, are good

points of learning. Listen to them. Examine yourself (honestly) in thelight of them. Then act as you believe best serves Gods purposes. Russ

    Dog Days

    2 Timothy 4:2

As August brings the dry, hot

days of Summer upon us, there isa tendency to retreat. The idea is

to wait until more favorable condi-

tions prevail. There is a nice ap-peal to the idea of finding a shady

or cool place and simply waitingfor the season to pass. Actually,

retreating in August is a bad strate-

    gy.According to one investment

guru, the time to invest is when

others are not doing so. I dont

    know much about investing and

making money. Still, the thoughtof taking advantage of those lazy,

hazy, crazy days of summer is an

    apt strategy.

Pauls admonition to theyounger preacher was to carry an

    urgency even when things seemed

    to be out of season.

Let the dog days become the

    days of determined and advancing

efforts as we see the coming of the

    crowded days of Autumn.
