STATION #1: What happens when you mix a SOLID and a LIQUID?

Materials: Beaker, Stirrer, Powdered Cooper Sulfate, water, scoop

Safety: Googles required, wash hands after experiment

Procedures: (Check off as you complete each step)

____1. Pour some water into the beaker.____2. Add a small amount of Cu(SO4) to the water.____3. Stir well.____4. Record your results.____5. Empty solution in the sink and rinse your beaker & stirrer____6. Move to a new station if not done with lab. Wash hands if done with lab.

STATION #2: What happens when you mix a SOLID and a LIQUID?

Materials: Beaker, water, NaCl crystals, scoop, stirrer Safety: goggles needed Procedures : (Check off as you complete each step) ____1. Pour some water into the beaker.____2. Add a small amount of NaCl to the water.____3. Stir well.____4. Record your results.____5. Empty solution in the sink and rinse your beaker & stirrer____6. Move to a new station if not done with lab. STATION #6: What happens when you mix a GAS and a LIQUID?

Let’s see if a gas dissolves in a liquid. The gas we most often use is carbon dioxide (CO2). Carbon dioxide is one of the gases of air. It is also a gas we exhale.

How can we tell when Carbon dioxide is present? Carbon dioxide mixed with water is slightly acidic. When Bromothymol Blue(indicator), normally blue in color, is added it will turn the solution a yellowish/green color.

Materials: Beaker, water, Bromothymol Blue(indicator), stirrer, straw, you

Safety: goggles needed, DO NOT INGEST (swallow) the indicator! Procedures : (Check off as you complete each step)

_____1. Pour some water into one of the beakers.

_____2. Describe the color of the water:_______________________________________

_____3. Put a few drops of the indicator in the beaker and stir.. _____4. Describe the color of the water:_______________________________________

_____5. Using the straw, blow into the beaker. (DO NOT INHALE the solution!)

_____6. The water color:

A. Stayed the same as in #4 B. Turned a different color. (color:________)
