It has been a very busy term with many opportunities and activities provided for the children. One of the highlights was the Dancing like the Stars performance by the Year 7 and 8 students at the Isaac Theatre Royal on Tuesday evening. The high quality tuition that they received and the hard work they put in was rewarded with a top notch performance. The performance was very polished and most professional. The children certainly made the most of the opportunity that they were given. They were a credit to themselves and the school. Thank you to Ms Harwood and Mrs Ioane for their passion and willingness to provide this wonderful opportunity and experience for the children as it is something that they will never forget and should be very proud of. Check their performance through this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=4SNivoXrZSk&feature=youtu.be Thank you for your support of the Learning Conferences. These 3 way conferences are an important part of our reporting to you on the progress of your child towards their Learning Targets. These complement the written Report. We would appreciate your feedback on the revamped Report form which were changed to make them more user friendly. Thank you also for ensuring that you collected your children on time as this meant that we were not distracted by calling parents or having to supervise children who had not been picked up. Thank you to the PFA, in particular Mike Donaldson and his team who organised and ran a most successful and enjoyable Quiz Night last Friday. They were able to raise in excess of $1200.00. A great effort. This Friday is Mufti Day. We are joining Catholic Schools from right across New Zealand for Mufti Mania. This is a Caritas initiative for a Catholic School in Papua New Guinea. At the first Board of Trustees meeting Tim Willetts was re-elected as Chairperson. I hope that you enjoy the holidays with your children. Term 3 begins on Monday July 22. Keeping Ourselves Safe Parent Info session

Thursday 25th July 2.40pm.

During weeks 2 to 6 we are teaching the Keeping Ourselves Safe programme designed with the NZ Police. This will be taught every two years.

What is Keeping Ourselves Safe? Keeping Ourselves Safe [KOS] consists of a comprehensive range of child protection resources to help students learn and apply a range of safety skills that they can use when interacting with others.

They will learn: • to work out when their safety is at risk, for example walking home alone in the dark; • how to keep safe when they meet and mix with other people; • who and how to ask for help if they, or someone they know has safety concerns; • to go on asking for help until someone does something; • that it is important to make and follow personal, family and school safety rules.

We need to be aware of personal safety in all communities, regardless of their ethnic, socio-economic, geographic and religious make-up. A child who feels unsafe is less likely to reach their full potential as an individual, may struggle to focus on learning, and may fail to thrive.

Senior Constable Brad Hagerty our School Community Officer will be here at 2.40pm on the 25th July in the Creative space to run a parent info session and answer any questions you may have about this programme. So please come along if you can.

words to describe the process.

Value, celebrate and build on all the languages your child speaks

To our Gagana Samoa and Lea Faka-Tonga families,

We have been looking into ways that we can further support our Pasifika children to develop their literacy skills. Research has shown that talking to your child at home in your strongest language is important for their development. We have available some booklets in gagana Samoa and Lea Faka-Tonga that detail the skills your child is expected to be able to do at the end of each year at school. We also have available packs of flip dual languages books to share with your children. These are available to be used by you and your family as ‘reading to’ books to share the language and experiences of your culture with them in your strongest language. These books are designed to encourage all family members to read to and with your child. Please contact Lesley Dell, [email protected] or Kendall Ball, [email protected] if you would like to borrow one of these packs.

Faith Facts: Week 10 1-5 July

Wednesday 3 July is the Feast Day of St Thomas the Apos-tle. He is famously known as “doubting Thomas” because he did not believe that the risen Jesus was the “real thing” until he could touch the blood on Jesus’ side where he had been pierced by the soldier’s lance. When Thomas did recognise the risen Jesus, he responded by acknowledging Jesus by saying “My Lord, and my God”. John’s Gospel gives Thomas several speaking parts. The tradition of the Church holds that Thom-as travelled as far as India, including the province of Kerala preaching the Good News. St Thomas is the patron Saint of Archi-tects.

10th Commandment “You shall not covet your neighbour’s goods” Not to covet (to want something really badly) what belongs to others means not allowing yourself to be carried away by envy or greed. The tenth commandment warns against the desire to have everything immediately, to continuously have more, to gain at all costs, even when it means acting unjustly. The first step to conquering the desire to have what belongs to others is to be grateful to God for what we have. Gratitude for what we have helps us to stop measuring ourselves against others. Respecting this commandments means recognizing our own gifts and talents and making good use of them,

while at the same time being happy when others make good use of their gifts.

Community Notices

Tips for staying well during the school holidays With flu circulating widely in the community, Canterbury DHB has some simple tips for how you can stop the spread, and look after yourselves and your whānau if you do get sick. Stop the spread If you or your whānau are feeling unwell with flu-like symp-toms such as a fever, headache, muscle aches, shivering, and a dry cough: Stay at home Cough or sneeze into a tissue or your inner elbow Wash and dry hands often, or use hand sanitiser

Treat the symptoms at home Most of the time, the symptoms of flu can be managed at home. Canterbury DHB has produced the ‘Coping with the flu at home’ brochure, containing practical advice for caring for someone with the flu, such as:

how to treat the symptoms at home danger signs to look out for, especially in young chil-

dren/babies when to seek medical advice and where to go. The brochure is available online in the following languages: English, Māori, Hindi, Korean, Samoan, Simplified Chi-nese, Traditional Chinese and Tagalog. Where to seek help If you are concerned about you or your whānau’s symp-toms, call your general practice team 24/7 for advice rather than visiting in person. After hours, follow the instructions to be put through to a nurse for free health advice. Avoid the hospital unless it is an emergency. Update on the flu vaccine Thanks to a great response from Cantabrians, flu vaccine supplies are now limited but they are still available from GPs and some pharmacists for the following priority groups:

people over 65 pregnant women (any stage of pregnancy) those with long-term health conditions such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes respira-

tory disease (including asthma that requires regular preventive therapy), kidney disease and most cancers

children aged four years and under who have been hospitalised for respiratory illness or have a history of significant respiratory illness.
