1400m), when he defeated wet-track revelation Jungle Edge (Dubawi) at Eagle Farm yesterday.

The Chris Waller-trained Counterattack (Redoute’s Choice), who is set to be retired to Kitchwin Hills Stud after the Stradbroke Handicap, was another three and three quarter lengths away in third. Impending (Lonhro) finished fourth, beaten eight lengths, on a track described as a ‘Heavy 20’ by one leading jockey.

The former Greg Bennett-trained Clearly Innocent, who was ridden by Hugh Bowman, settled near last on the Heavy 8 Eagle Farm track before making up a lot of ground on runaway leader Jungle Edge late to put a margin on his rivals.

Lees, who also trained Sense Of Occasion (Street Sense) to win last week’s Doomben Cup (Gr 1, 2000m), was on hand to witness the victory, as was his former trainer Bennett.

Bennett closed his Scone-based stable earlier this year to oversee the breaking-in, education and pre-training of horses at Aquis Farm at Canungra on the Gold Coast.

“Hopefully Greg got a big kick out of this win,” Lees said.“He was very well looked after early in his career and I’m now getting

the benefit of that.“He improved off his Luskin Star win at Scone but going from a Listed

race to weight-for-age was always a concern.“Obviously, he’ll improve further now before the Stradbroke.”A winner of last year’s Country Championship Final (1400m) and the

Luskin Star Stakes (Listed, 1300m) at Scone when trained by Bennett, Clearly Innocent made his debut for Lees when unplaced at Hawkesbury on 29 April.

He then returned to Scone to make it back-to-back Luskin Star Stakes on 13 May before being successful at his first start at Group One level yesterday.

Bowman’s Kingsford-Smith Cup win was his 12th at Group One level in Australia this season, leaving him one short Shane Dye’s record.

On a track where it appeared to be hard to make ground, Bowman said he wanted to settle closer to the speed on Clearly Innocent but was unable to.

“I wanted to be a bit closer but I didn’t want him to be out of his comfort zone,” Bowman said.

“He gave me a great feeling and I knew he had it in him after riding him at Scone.”

Lees is now hoping handicappers will give Clearly Innocent enough weight to ensure a start in the Stradbroke Handicap on 10 June, which will also be run at Eagle Farm.

A homebred for Cressfield Stud’s Bruce Neill, Clearly Innocent (5 g Not A Single Doubt - No Penalty by Zabeel) took his record to nine wins from 15 starts with one second, the gelding has now earned $1,059,100

in prize money having only made his debut in August 2015 as a four-year-old.

He is out of city-winning stakes-performed mare No Penalty (Zabeel), who is a three-quarter sister to Listed winner Gimmick (Sir Tristram) and stakes-placed Don Tristram (Sir Tristram). Gimmick is the dam of Group One winner Linky Dink (Keeper), while No Penalty’s half-sister Trio (Deputy Governor) is the dam of Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Sale Of Century (Prized).

No Penalty has had four foals to race for two winners, with Clearly Innocent the first successful at stakes level. Cressfield Stud as agent in 2013 sold No Penalty not in foal to Premium Bloodstock Services for $16,000 at the Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale.

Clearly Innocent’s half-sister, the winning mare Champagne Kisses (Onemorenomore), is being offered on Tuesday as Lot 676 https://ecat.magicmillions.com.au/viewLot/201/676 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale. A three-time winner Champagne Kisses is a graduate of the 2014 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale, having been purchased by Hillstone Thoroughbreds for $5,000 from the draft of Cressfield.

Meanwhile, the Sir Patrick and Lady Hogan-bred No Penalty produced a colt by Western Australian stallion Patronize (Redoute’s Choice) last October and returned to Arrowfield Stud stallion Not A Single Doubt on 8 November.

Clearly Innocent is one of 42 stakes winners for Not A Single Doubt, who will stand for $88,000 (inc GST) this year, and one of seven Group One winners. They include Newgate Farm’s 2017 first season stallion Extreme Choice, recent UBET Classic (registered as Robert Sangster Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Secret Agenda and Vinery Stud Stakes (registered as Storm Queen Stakes) (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Single Gaze.

Melody Belle In Tune For Sires Produce Stakes

New Zealand filly Melody Belle (Commands) produced a dominant display to win yesterday’s BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) on a maligned Eagle Farm surface, signalling she was a strong contender to win her second Group One race of her short career.

Already a winner of the rich Karaka Million (RL, 1200m) and the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) in New Zealand, the Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards-trained filly appears set to be a major contender for the J J Atkins Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Eagle Farm on 10 June.

Melody Belle ($5) raced away in the straight to beat the Peter and

Paul Snowden-trained Taking Aim (Choisir) ($8.50) by four lengths, with Pierata (Pierro) ($16) another length and a quarter away in third.

She is the first New Zealand-trained to win the race since since the Bruce Marsh-trained Mr Shannon (Three Legs) in 1986.

Richards believes there is some improvement in the filly as she heads to the J J Atkins Stakes in two weeks’ time.

"She is a strong filly by Commands so I am confident she can run a strong 1600 metres in the Atkins," Richards said.

"I was mindful of the fact she had not started since 1 April when she won the Sires at Awapuni. But she had a trial and that set her up for today.

"She was a cheap buy at the Karaka sales but she has now won a Karaka Million and a BRC Sires."

Richards believes Melody Belle, who was promoted to $2.80 favourite for the J J Atkins, can develop into a spring filly with races like the Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) in mind.

Richards and training partner Stephen Autridge have a big team in Brisbane and have already won a Group race with Shocking Luck (Shocking) in the Rough Habit Plate (Gr 3, 2000m).

Winning jockey Opie Bosson also believes there is improvement in Melody Belle.

"She has taken a lot of confidence since she won the Karaka Million in January. She put herself into the race and finished hard," Bosson said.

Hugh Bowman, who rode last start Ken Russell Memorial Classic (Gr 3, 1200m) winner Taking Aim, said the colt had tried hard after getting into a reasonable position from a wide barrier (15).

"The winner was too good but he fought on well," Bowman said.Meanwhile, Pierata’s jockey Corey Brown suggested the lightly raced

colt would appreciate the addition of blinkers.Melody Belle (2 f Commands - Meleka Belle by Iffraaj) has now had

six starts for four wins, three of them at stakes level, and a Group Two

placing. She has earned prize money of $832,974 and is a $3.50 chance for next month’s J J Atkins Stakes.

Melody Belle was bred by Haunui Farm client Marie Leicester and sold by Haunui Farm at the 2016 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale to Te Akau Racing’s David Ellis for NZ$57,500.

The filly is the first foal out of winning Iffraaj (Zafonic) mare Meleka Belle, herself a half-sister to stakes-placed Desert Rain (Honor Grades), Tsarina Belle (Stravinsky), Housemaster (Housebuster) and Kiwinsky (Stravinsky).

Meleka Belle’s yearling filly by O’Reilly (Last Tycoon), her second foal, was sold at the New Zealand Bloodstock Select Yearling Sale by Haunui Farm to trainer Shaune Ritchie for NZ$100,000. She has a weanling filly by Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) who was born on 1 October and was covered by Tavistock (Montjeu) in 2016.

Melody Belle is one of 73 individual stakes winners for the late sire Commands (Danehill) who had 116 live foals born in 2014, including Melody Belle, after dying in July of that year at Darley Stud in the Hunter Valley. She is also one of 11 Group One winners for Commands, among them Appearance, Epaulette, Paratroopers and Commanding Jewel.

Eckstein On Group One Path After Glenlogan Success

Sunday 28 May 2017 Eckstein On Group One Path After Glenlogan Success

(Stratum) by a long neck with the Kevin Kemp-trained Sold For Song (Collate) a further three-quarters of a length away in third.

“She had a few things in her favour today but she toughed it out well,” said winning trainer Kurt Goldman.

“Her next run will be in the Dane Ripper then onto the Tatt’s Tiara.”The mare was in an agitated mood in the parade ring but Goldman

said it was part of her nature and was not overly perturbed by her pre-race manners.

“That’s her make-up and we’ve learned to manage that and although it takes a lot of work it’s pleasing to get the rewards,” Goldman said.

Eckstein’s ability to handle the Eagle Farm circuit was uppermost in Goldman’s mind when planning her winter carnival campaign.

The three-year-old won the Mode Plate (Listed, 1200m) at Eagle Farm last December before winning again at the Gold Coast and running third in the $2,000,000 Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m) at the same course on 14 January.

“I know it’s a different track to what it was during the summer but she ticked that boxing winning on a soft surface and I was confident coming into today,” he said.

Eckstein was spelled after her Magic Millions 3YO Guineas placing and resumed with a fourth-placed performance in the Denise’s Joy Stakes (Listed, 1100m) on 13 May at Scone, a race won by Miss Debutante (Fastnet Rock).

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Miss Debutante, also a three-year-old filly, led the field in the Glenlogan Park Stakes yesterday before tiring late to finish two and a half lengths fourth.

Goldman plans to start Eckstein in the Dane Ripper Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Eagle Farm on 10 June before her ultimate goal, the Tattersall’s Tiara (Gr 1, 1400m) at the same track on 24 June.

If successful, it would be Goldman’s biggest success as a trainer, having prepared William Reid Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) runner-up Hellbent, who is also by I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), early in his career before being transferred to fellow trainer Darren Weir.

Winning jockey Corey Brown kept a careful watch on Eckstein throughout in case the mare began to race waywardly under pressure.

“She’s too smart for her own good and when I hit the front I didn’t want to get into her too much because I was worried she was going to tuck up underneath me,” Brown said.

Eckstein (3 f I Am Invincible - Comrie by Choisir) was a $165,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase in 2015 for Australian Bloodstock from the Vinery Stud draft.

She had also been sold at the Inglis Australian Broodmare and Weanling Sale in 2014 by breeder, Harden-based Redbank North, for $50,000.

Yesterday’s Group Three victory takes Eckstein’s record to ten starts for five wins, a second and a third, with prize money of $524,185.

Her dam Comrie (Choisir) was unraced but is from the family of stakes winners Causeway Lass (Giant’s Causeway), Rockolicious (Fastnet Rock) and stallion Rothesay (Fastnet Rock).

Eckstein’s third dam is three-time Group One winner Canny Lass (Bletchingly), a sister to grand stallion Canny Lad.

Comrie’s three foals to race have all won, with Eckstein the first stakes

winner, but she was not covered in 2013, the year the Listed winner was born. She missed to Unencumbered (Testa Rossa) in 2014 and produced a colt by Cornerstone Stud shuttler Zebedee (Invincible Spirit) on 15 October. She then missed to Mossman (Success Express) last year.

I Am Invincible, who had his fee doubled to $110,000 (inc GST) for 2017, is the sire of 21 individual stakes winners including Group One-winning sire son Brazen Beau and this season’s Myer Classic (registered as Empire Rose Stakes) (Gr 1, 1600m) winner I Am A Star. In total, progeny by the son of Invincible Spirit (Green Desert) have won 19 stakes races this season.

The Yarraman Park Stud stallion had five foals sell at last week’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Weanling Sale for an aggregate of $930,000 at an average of $186,000 and a top price of $390,000.

Niccanova Handles Heavy To Land Fred Best Classic

Toowoomba trainer Steve Tregea’s decision to retain exciting three-year-old homebred Niccanova (Nicconi) paid off yesterday when the gelding handled the heavy Eagle Farm surface to take out the Fred Best Classic (Gr 3, 1400m).

Tregea has received offers to sell Niccanova to Hong Kong but has resisted and instead plans to chase more stakes success next start in the Queensland Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) on 10 June at Eagle Farm.

Ridden by James Orman, Niccanova was able to wear down the Toby Edmonds-trained Sylpheed (Real Saga) late to win by a short neck, with Sydney three-year-old I Thought So (So You Think) three quarters of a length back in third.

A debut winner at the Sunshine Coast in January, Niccanova ran third at Eagle Farm at his second start before winning on 25 February at Doomben over 1600 metres,

The gelding was then spelled before resuming at the Gold Coast on 13 May over 1200 metres with a victory and then handled the step up in grade yesterday at Eagle Farm.

Tregea’s decision to keep hold of the gelding was a simple one.“I decided not to sell him because you’ve got to have a reason to get

out of bed,” Tregea said.

Sunday 28 May 2017 Niccanova Handles Heavy To Land Fred Best Classic

“When he won his first start at the Sunshine Coast we had plenty of offers and then again after he won at Doomben but even though the money would pay a lot of bills I turned them all down.”

With an eye on this year’s carnival, Tregea decided to aim Niccanova at the Fred Best Classic as a lead-up to the Queensland Guineas in a fortnight.

“I thought today if he raced well and handled the track we could go to the Guineas and if not take him back to the farm and give him a few weeks off and set him for a couple of QTIS races in July,” Tregea said.

“Now that he’s won it looks like we’ll head to the Guineas.”Niccanova is not nominated for the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1,

1400m) and Tregea has ruled out paying a late entry fee.Post-race,Tregea admitted he gave serious thought to scratching

Niccanova from the Group Three race because of the heavy track.“With the query on the track I kept looking and looking at it and telling

myself that the barrier wouldn’t matter on the heavy going,” he said.“I was nearly going to scratch him but in the end I thought it was worth

rolling the dice.”Jockey Jeff Lloyd praised the courage of his runner-up Sylpheed

and Corey Brown said his third placegetter I Thought So had untapped potential but was not letting down as well as he should in races.

Bred and raced by Tregea’s Windemere Stud, Niccanova (3 g Nicconi - Dananova by Snippetson) has won four of his five starts and ran third at his other run. He has also, so far, won a total of $207,000 in prize money in his short career.

One of two named foals and the only one to race out of the unraced Dananova (Snippetson), Niccanova is the sole stakes winner in his first two dams. His third dam, the unraced Tarasova (Sir Tristram), is a sister to the Listed winner Captiva and a half-sister to the fellow Listed winner Adagietto (Sackford).

Tarasova is also the third dam of this year’s Football Stakes (registered as Festival Stakes) (Listed, 1000m) winner Ploverset (Street Boss). The two-year-old filly also ran third in the Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) for trainers David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig.

Dananova has an unraced two-year-old filly by Top Echelon (Umatilla), but was not served in 2014. She produced a colt by Trusting (Tale Of The Cat), born on 22 September last year and was covered by Whittington (Tale Of The Cat) on 4 November

Niccanova’s sire, the Widden Stud-based Nicconi (Bianconi), meanwhile, has enjoyed a strong season, with two-year-old Time Awaits winning at Group Three level and the Lindsay Park-trained sprinter Faatinah winning at Group Two level and finishing runner-up in the Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m). Sircconi also won the VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) in March for trainer Peter Morgan.

Niccanova is one of 13 individual stakes winners for Nicconi, who was the most active Australian stallion in 2016, covering 226 mares at a fee of $11,000 (inc GST). On the back of Nicconi’s success and popularity, his fee has been increased to $16,500 (inc GST) in 2017.

Seven For Not A Single DoubtThe Arrowfield Stud-based stallion Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) sired his seventh Group One winner when the Kris Lees-trained Clearly Innocent (5 g ex No Penalty by Zabeel) landed the Kingsford-Smith Cup (Gr 1, 1300m) at Eagle Farm yesterday. Clearly Innocent is one of 42 stakes winners for Not Single Doubt and he joins Miracles Of Life, Extreme Choice, Secret Agenda, Single Gaze, Scales Of Justice and Good Project as his other Group One winners. Six For Golden ArcherQueensland-based first crop stallion Golden Archer (Rock Of Gibraltar) yesterday sired his sixth individual winner, with Triple Arrow (2 g ex Triquetra by Elusive Quality) victorious at the Gold Coast. Ridden by Dan Griffin, the Gillian Heinrich and Ben Rodgers-trained gelding settled off the speed in the 1200 metre two-year-old maiden before finishing strongly to win by three quarters of a length at his sixth race start. Golden Archer stands at Raheen Stud for a fee of $5,500 (inc GST). Triple Arrow joins Redex, Royal Myth, Whistling Win, Sundeck and Lady Lark as the sires other winners. First For AmbidexterCornerstone Stud-based first crop stallion Ambidexter (Commands) yesterday sired his first winner when the Darren Weir-trained juvenile Avanti Rose (2 f ex Tessa Avanti by Charge Forward) won on debut over 1000 metres at Warracknabeal yesterday. Ridden by apprentice Liam RIordan, Avanti Rose was sent straight to the lead in the 1100 metre maiden and was able to hold off her older rivals to win by a neck. Ambidexter, who won the Theo Marks Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) among his three wins from 15 starts, will stand for a fee of $5,500 (inc GST) in 2017.

13 For NicconiThe Widden-based stallion Nicconi (Bianconi) sired his 13th stakes winner courtesy of Niccanova’s (3 g ex Dananova by Snippetson) win in the Fred Best Classic (Gr 3, 1400m) at Eagle Farm yesterday. The Steve Tregea-trained three-year-old has now won four of his five career starts and he defeated Sylpheed (Real Saga) by just a head with I Thought So (So You Think) a further three quarters of a length drift in third. Nicconi will stand at Widden stud this season for an increased fee of $16,500 (inc GST) having stood last season for $11,000 (inc GST). 64 For SavabeelThe Robert Heathcote-trained Kaiser Franz (6 g ex Call Me Lily by Just a Dancer) ran out a shock winner of the Premier’s Cup (Gr 3, 2200m) at Eagle Farm yesterday and in the process provided the Waikato Stud-based sire Savabeel (Zabeel) with his 64th stakes winner. The six-year-old gelding had not won since taking out a handicap over 2200 metres at the Sunshine Coast last April and he beat Zambezi Warrior (Pentire) by half a length with just a short head back to The Chairman (High Chaparral) in third. Savabeel will stand at Waikato Stud for an unchanged fee of NZ$100,000 (plus GST) this season and his stakes winners include 12 Group One winners. Brisbane Cup Target For KaiserTrainer Robert Heathcote has said that Kaiser Franz could now head to the Brisbane Cup (Gr 2, 2400m) at Eagle Farm on 10 June following his victory in the Premier’s Cup yesterday. "I copped a bit of flak from the owners for running him and I noticed he was big odds before the jump but I had a really sneaky feeling that he'd love this track," Heathcote said. "He's run second last, gone at the 600 (metres) last start, but I liked his run the start before that on this track. Today was his big test and maybe it's pie

in the sky to run him in the Brisbane Cup but the extra 200 metres next time will suit him." 49 For IffraajThe Haunui Farm-based shuttler Iffraaj (Zafonic) sired his 49th stakes winner when the Brian Smith-trained Order Again (3 g ex Glass Half Full by Van Nistelrooy) narrowly landed the Grand Prix (Gr 3, 2200m) at Eagle Farm yesterday. The Brian Smith three-year-old gelding, who was most recently seen running second to Shocking Luck (Shocking) in the Rough Habit Plate (Gr 3, 2000m) at Doomben on 13 May, scored by just a nose to beat Volatile Mix (Pentire) with a length and three quarters back to Violate (Sebring) in third. Iffraaj stood at Haunui Farm last season for NZ17,500 (plus GST) and will stand for an increased fee of NZ$25,000 (plus GST) this season. His progeny are headed by eight Group One winners. Order Again To DerbyFollowing Order Again’s win in the Grand Prix Stakes yesterday trainer Brian Smith was eyeing a tilt at the Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) at Eagle Farm on 10 June. "I have tears in my eyes not because I am crying but because they are tears of relief. I have had my problems with this horse but I have never lost confidence in him," Smith said. "The future is very bright for him and the Derby will be the first step. When you get to my age (76 years), you treasure getting a good horse." Col N Lil Too Strong In Lord Mayor’s CupTrainer Ben Currie is hoping Col ‘N’ Lil’s (5 m Bradbury's Luck - Jyler by Street Cry) connections will decide against selling her at the upcoming Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale after she won the Lord Mayor’s Cup (Gr 3, 1600m) at Eagle Farm yesterday. The five-year-old mare scored a half length victory over Duca Valentinois (Holy Roman Emperor). "If Kim decides not to sell her I'm sure she'd

be a perfect horse to aim at the Ipswich Cup," Currie said. "I thought she was in trouble at the furlong and the runner-up did have a nice run in behind but when she gets in a dogfight like that she's always tough.” Col ‘N’ Lil is catalogued as Lot 679 https://ecat.magicmillions.com.au/viewLot/201/679 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare sale which is due to begin its four-day run on Tuesday. McKell Cup To AllergicThe Darren Beadman-trained Allergic (5 g Street Cry - Cajou by Encosta de Lago) secured his second stakes success when he ran out a ready winner of the WJ McKell Cup (Listed, 2400m) at Randwick yesterday. The five-year-old gelding, who won the Colin Stephen Handicap (Gr 3, 2400m) at Rosehill last September, beat Broadside (Raise The Flag) by a length and a quarter with another half a length back to Soviet Courage (Dutch Art) in third. "We were slightly worried when he was out the back there. There wasn't a huge amount going on in front of him but luckily Big Blue towed him into the race a little bit and gave him a nice run home," Godolphin Australia racing manager Claire Mackay said. Kementari Eyes J J AtkinsThe Darren Beadman-trained Kementari (Lonhro) staked his J J Atkins Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) claims after he broke his maiden in the Seven News Plate (1400m) at Randwick yesterday. The two-year-old colt came into the race having run second on debut at Canterbury and he defeated Easy Go Easy Win (Savabeel) by a decisive four lengths. "That was very impressive," said Godolphin Australia racing manager Claire Mackay. "He was due to take a lot of improvement out of his first run behind Malahat and he's put them to bed pretty easily. He's still very new, very raw, he's still got a lot more improvement, he's only going to improve next season." Shock Win For Magical StanceThe Ron Quinton-trained Magical Stance (Al Maher) returned from a 35-week spell when he won the One Solutions Handicap (1400m) at Randwick yesterday. The six-year-old gelding had not been seen since

he ran ninth in the Hyland Race Colours Handicap (1400m) at Rosehill on 24 September after sustaining a pastern injury and he beat Imperator Augustus (Roman Emperor) by one and a half lengths. "That was unexpected. Being off the scene with an injury, first time back and his trial the other day was pretty ordinary. We're all very surprised," Quinton said. "A couple of preparations ago he looked like a little Cups horse then he did have an injury. We've given him the time and he's come back well." Monasterio Earns Derby StartMonasterio (Savabeel) has earned himself a potential start in the Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) at Eagle Farm on 10 June after he posted a half-length victory over stablemate Cross Stitch (Pins) in a Benchmark 78 (2000m) at Randwick yesterday. The three-year-old gelding had not won since breaking his maiden over 1900 metres at Canterbury on 20 January and was last seen running a disappointing sixth of seven runners over 2000 metres at Kembla Grange on 13 May. "It was a very good effort," said trainer Chris Waller's racing manager Charlie Duckworth. "It's a massive change in tactics for him, he led last last start and did things upside down and did it wrong. Today he went back, switched off and really hit the line.” Burning Passion To Healy StakesTrainer James Cummings has said he will now aim Burning Passion (Northern Meteor) for a tilt in the W J Healy Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Eagle Farm on 24 June following the gelding’s victory in a Benchmark 95 (1200m) at Eagle Farm yesterday. The five-year-old, who was most recently seen running fifth in the Gold Rush Handicap (1100m) at Hawkesbury on 29 April, beat Trevinder (Dane Shadow) by a length. "This horse has been good to me and when he worked well at Randwick on Tuesday morning we selected to come up here," Cummings said. "He will have a break between runs with a trial but probably tackle the Healy Stakes at his next start." Weir Draws LevelA winning treble at Sandown has put Darren

Weir equal to Lee Freedman with the most Melbourne metropolitan winners in a season. The victory of Plein Ciel (Mamool) in the Ladbrokes Handicap (1600m) provided Weir with his 115th winner for the season, levelling him with the 2005/06 season total of Lee Freedman. Weir had earlier success on Saturday with juvenile Cliff's Edge (Canford Cliffs) in the Clanbrooke Racing Handicap (1200m) and Renew (Dansili) in the Australian Hurdle (3400m). Weir said after Plein Ciel’s victory he could now head to either Ipswich Cup (Listed, 2150m) on the 17 June or the Caloundra Cup (Listed, 2400m) at the Sunshine Coast on 1 July. No Plans To Move Eagle FarmThe Brisbane Race Club has denied it has any plans to move the remaining two meetings of the Brisbane winter carnival after the Eagle Farm track again chopped up. Jockeys were divided in their opinions of Saturday's track, but they all agreed it played like a heavy surface even though there had been no rain for more than a week. After the first race Kerrin McEvoy said it was the worst track he had ridden on but another experienced rider, Corey Brown, said it was riding better than it looked. "At this time there is no such plan. We are not considering moving any race meeting at this time. The jockeys say the track is safe and that is the main thing," Michael Crutcher from the Brisbane Race Club said.

Five For Pour MoiThe former shuttler Pour Moi (Montjeu) sired his fifth stakes winner when the Tony Pike-trained Haussmann (2 g ex Lily l'Amour by Volksraad) won yesterday’s Great Northern Foal Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Ellerslie. The juvenile was having his fourth career start having been last seen running second in the Waikato Equine Veterinary Centre Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Te Rapa on 6 May and he defeated So Far Sokool (Showcasing) by half a length with another quarter of a length back to Ohceedee (Power) in third. Pour Moi, who formerly stood at Windsor Park Stud, stands at Grange Stud in Ireland.

Spell For HaussmannTony Pike has said that Haussmann will now head for a spell following his first stakes victory in the Great Northern Foal Stakes at Ellerslie yesterday. Pike had been concerned about the heavy going ahead of the race but was pleased with the way the juvenile performed. “He’d only ever trialled and raced on good or dead ground, but it is a stakes race and it was always going to be his last run for the season,” Pike said. “He’s been a work in progress and we’ve been trying to teach him to relax as he wanted to over-race. He’ll go out now and we’ll have him back for some of those better races in the spring. He should get a strong mile and maybe further.” Megablast Wins At EllerslieThe Nigel Tiley-trained Megablast (Shinko King) will head to Australia on 11 June with one more win to his name after he posted an emphatic ninth length victory over Arzak (Towkay) in the Shamrock Group Handicap (1600m) at Ellerslie yesterday. The stakes-placegetter will head to Australia for a two-start visit, which will serve as a forerunner to a Melbourne spring campaign. “He’ll run on 17 June over 2050 metres at Moonee Valley and we’ll back him up a week later over 2500 metres at Flemington,” Tiley said. “He’ll come home after that and go out to the beach before we get him ready again.” Big Future For DolcettoTrainer Sylvia Kay’s faith in Dolcetto (Per Incanto) was repaid yesterday when the four-year-old gelding posted an impressive victory in the Hanley Formula Sprint Handicap (1200m) at Trentham. The four-year-old has now won four of his seven career starts and Kay is confident he will be better horse in the spring. “He’s a very good horse and he’ll be even better in the spring,” said Kay. “I was a bit worried at the start of the week as the horse had a stone bruise, but thankfully we got over that.” Challenge Stakes Next For Gypsy FairTrainer Allan Sharrock is considering backing Gypsy Fair (Falkirk) up in next Saturday’s A G Challenge Stakes (Listed, 1600m) at Wanganui following her victory in an Open Handicap over 1400 metres at Trentham yesterday. The six-

year-old mare, who won the Metric Mile (Gr 3, 1600m) at Marton on 10 September, beat Heni (Towkay) by two lengths with another quarter of a length back to Duffers Creek (Gold Centre) in third. “I haven’t ruled it out the weight-for-age race at Wanganui and I’ll nominate her and see how the field comes up,” said Sharrock. “I don’t usually do that, but she’s a tough mare.” No Stradbroke For Seventh UpNew Zealand-based trainer Shelley Hale has shelved plans to send Group Two winner Seventh Up (Shinko King) to the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) at Eagle Farm on 10 June after an unsatisfactory scope. The six-year-old won the Easter Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Ellerslie on 22 April before finishing second over 1400 metres at Te Rapa last start. "We scoped him earlier this week and he had a bit of muck in his trachea so he's actually going out,” said Hale. “You've got to be 120 per cent if you are going to take on that level of competition.”

Asia

Five Runners For Size In Sha Tin VaseTrainer John Size will look to secure his first win in the Sha Tin Vase (Gr 3, 1200m) when he saddles half the field in today’s race. Size saddles five runners in the Group Three, and they are headed by Group-winning pair Mr Stunning (Exceed And Excel) and Amazing Kids (Falkirk) and they will be joined by stablemates Thewizardofoz (Redoute’s Choice), Sun Jewellery (Snitzel) and D B Pin (Darci Brahma). “Most of these horses have had a tough year,” Size said. “They have had a long season so some horses might be a little bit tired, some horses might have had enough. It is a good test for them, so we will see what holds up.”

International

Saval Beg To Order Of St GeorgeThe Aidan O’Brien-trained Order Of St George (5 h Galileo - Another Storm by Gone West) secured his sixth stakes race victory when he ran out a ready winner of the Saval Beg Stakes (Listed, 1m6f) at Leopardstown on Friday

night. The five-year-old entire, whose other stakes victories include the Royal Ascot Gold Cup (Gr 1, 2m4f) and the Irish St Leger (Gr 1, 1m6f), beat Twilight Payment (Teofilo) by two and a quarter lengths with another three and a quarter lengths back to Motherland (Galileo) in third. Order Of St George is part-owned by Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winning owner Lloyd Williams. First Winner For IntelloThe Haras Du Quesnay-based first season sire Intello (Galileo) sired his first winner from his first runner when the Christophe Ferland-trained Sonjeu (2 f ex Wait and See by Montjeu) won the Prix de la Ville de San Sebastian (1100m) at Tarbes yesterday. The filly was purchased for €120,000 at Arqana October Yearling sale and she comfortably beat Mon Etoile (Thewayyouare) by two and a half lengths. The filly is the second foal and second winner out of the Group Three-placed Montjeu (Sadler’s Wells) mare Wait And See who herself is half sister to the Group Three-winning mare Daksha (Authorized). Churchill Lands Irish GuineasThe Aidan O’Brien-trained Churchill (3 c Galileo - Meow by Storm Cat) followed up his recent success in the 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) at Newmarket by landing the Irish 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) at the Curragh yesterday. The three-year-old colt, who has now won four Group One races, was away from the stalls cleanly and was settled in fifth by Ryan Moore. Moore made his move with two furlongs left to travel and gained the lead inside the final furlong and eventually powered away to beat Thunder Snow (Helmet) by two and a half lengths. “I think he's a very talented horse and he ticks all the boxes,” Moore told the Racing Post. “He goes to sleep on you and is such a good mover - he's a lot of power underneath and never misses a beat. He's always level and that's because he's so strong - he's a very special horse." Harry Angel Flies HomeThe Clive Cox-trained Harry Angel (3 c Dark Angel - Beatrix Potter by Cadeaux Genereux) produced a scintillating performance to win yesterday’s Sandy Lane Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at

Haydock. The three-year-old colt won the Mill Reef Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at Newbury last season, and made his debut this season by running second behind Blue Point (Shamardal) in the Pavilion Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) at Ascot on 3 May. He proved too strong for his seven rivals, showing an impressive turn of foot inside the final two furlongs to beat Second Thought (Kodiac) by a comfortable four and half lengths with another length and three quarters back to Mubtasim (Arcano) in third. After the race Cox said the three-year-old will now likely head to the Commonwealth Cup (Gr 1, 1m) at Royal Ascot in June. Priceless Shines In Temple Stakes Later on that afternoon, Priceless (4 m Exceed and Excel - Molly Brown by Rudimentary) was impressive when winning the Temple Stakes (Gr 2, 5f) and in the process provided her trainer Clive Cox with a stakes double at Haydock, with the trainer having also saddled Harry Angel to win the Sandy Lane Stakes. The four-year-old mare, who won the Lansdown Stakes (Listed, 5f) first up this season, was quickly away under Adam Kirby and was settled behind the leaders in the early part of the contest. As the pack entered the final furlong Kirby rode the mare into the lead and she was able to stay on strongly to beat the fast-finishing Goldream (Oasis Dream) by half a length with just a neck back to Alpha Delphini (Captain Gerrard) in third.

Gordon Back To His BestThe 2015 George Ryder Stakes (Gr 1, 1500m) winner Gordon Lord Byron (9 g Byron - Boa Estrela by Intikhab) proved that he was still up to competing in stakes company when he ran out a ready winner of the Greenlands Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at the Curragh yesterday. The Tom Hogan-trained gelding had not won since he took out the Minstrel Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) at the Curragh last July and held on well for pressure to beat Only Mine (Pour Moi) by one and a half lengths with another half a length back to Suedois (Le Havre) in third. Gordon Lord Byron has won 16 of his 73 career starts, including nine victories at stakes level. 25 For Hat TrickThe David Evans-trained Buying Trouble (4 m ex

Lotus Sutra by Kingmambo) stayed on strongly inside the final furlong to win the Cecil Frail Stakes (Listed, 6f) at Haydock yesterday and in the process provided Hat Trick (Sunday Silence) with his 25th stakes winner. The four-year-old mare, who had not won since she landed a handicap over six furlongs at Lingfield in February 2016, beat Bounce (Bahamian Bounty) by half a length with the same distance back to Futoon (Kodiac) in third. Hat Trick stands at Gainesway Stud in Kentucky for a fee of US$5,000. Creggs Pipes Makes All To Win LanwadesCreggs Pipes (5 f Rip Van Winkle - Sophie Germain by Indian Ridge) proved hard to pass when she made all to land the Lanwades Stud Stakes (Gr 2, 1m) at the Curragh yesterday. The five-year-old reversed the form with Turret Rocks (Fastnet Rock), who beat her in the Blue Wind Stakes (Gr 3, 1m2f) at the Curragh in earlier in the month. Creggs Pipes defeated Opal Tiara (Thousand Words) by three and three quarter lengths with another length and a half back to Turret Rocks, who finished third. Creggs Pipes is one of 16 stakes winners for Rip Van Winkle (Galileo), who will stand at Windsor Park stud on a permanent basis after the operation, in conjunction with Valachi Downs proprietor Kevin Hickman, purchased the son of Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) from Coolmore. 120 For Dansili The Chris Wall-trained First Sitting (6 g ex Aspiring Diva by Distant View) won the Festival Stakes (Listed, 1m2f) at Goodwood yesterday and in the process provided the Juddmonte Farms-based sire Dansili (Danehill) with his 120th stakes winner. The six-year-old gelding broke well under Gerald Mosse and was settled behind the leaders in the early stages. As the field entered the home straight Mosse sent First Sitting to the front and he stayed on strongly to bravely fend off the late challenge from Spark Plug (Dylan Thomas) to score by just a nose, with three and a half lengths back to Mount Logan (New Approach) in third. Dansili stands at Juddmonte Farms for a fee of £65,000. Second Step Too Good In TapsterGroup One winner Second Step (6 g Dalakhani

- My Dark Rosaleen by Sadler's Wells) held on well for pressure inside the final 50 yards to narrowly land the Tapster Stakes (Listed, 1m3f) at Goodwood yesterday. The Roger Charlton-trained six-year-old gelding snapped a nine-race losing streak when he defeated Desert Encounter (Halling) by half a length with another length and a quarter back to Barsanti (Champs Elysees) in third. Second Step has now won six of 19 career starts, including taking out the 2015 Grosser Preis von Berlin (Gr 1, 2400m) at Hoppegarten. Dal Harraild Lands York Grand CupThe William Haggas-trained Dal Harraild (4 g Champs Elysees - Dalvina by Grand Lodge) ran out an impressive winner of the Grand Cup (Listed, 1m5f) at York yesterday. The four-year-old gelding, who won the Godolphin Stakes (Listed, 1m4f) at Newmarket last September, pulled three and a half lengths clear of Nakeeta (Sixties Icon) with another one and half lengths back to Seamour (Azamour) in third. Dal Harraild is one of 14 stakes winners for the Castle Hyde-based sire Champ Elysees (Danehill), whose progeny is headed by sole Group One winner Trip To Paris. 32 For KodiacThe Jessica Harrington-trained Brother Bear (2 c ex Hurricane Emma by Mr Greeley) kept his unbeaten record intact when he ran out an impressive winner of yesterday’s Marble Hill Stakes (Listed, 6f) at the Curragh and provided his sire Kodiac (Danehill) with his 32nd stakes winner. The two-year-old came into the race having broken his maiden on debut over 6.5 furlongs at Leopardstown on 7 May and he beat Would Be King (Lethal Force) by three lengths with another one and a quarter lengths back to U S Navy Flag (War Front) in third. Kodiac stands at Tally Ho Stud for a fee of €50,000 and his stakes winners are headed by sole Group One-winning mare Tiggy Wiggy. 66 For Holy Roman EmperorThe Andre Fabre-trained Mask Of Time (3 c ex Mission Secrete by Galileo) won the Derby Du Midi (Listed, 1900m) at Bordeaux Le Bouscat yesterday and in the process provided the Aquis

Farm shuttler Holy Roman Emperor (Galileo) with his 66th stakes winner. Holy Roman Emperor shuttles to Aquis Farm where he will stand this season for a fee of $9,900 (inc GST) and his stakes winners are headed by ten Group One winners. 23 For WhipperThe Corinne Barande-Barbe-trained Chiverny (5 g ex Courances by Simon du Desert) ran out a ready winner of the Grand Prix De Bordeaux (Listed, 1900m) at Bordeaux Le Bouscat yesterday and in the process provided Whipper (Miesque's Son) with his 23rd stakes winner. The Peter Schiergen-trained three-year-old filly, who had finished runner up on her last start over 1700 metres at Düsseldorf, stayed on stoutly to score a three quarter length victory over Rosamunde (Nayef) with Thanx For Nothing (Myboycharlie) a further length and three quarters away in third. Mastercraftsman stands for a fee of €25,000 at Coolmore Stud in Ireland.

Artistica Wins Silberne PeitscheThe Dominik Moser-trained Artistica (3 f ex Areion - Artica by Pentire) added a second stakes success to her CV when she won yesterday’s Silberne Peitsche (Gr 3, 1200m) at Baden-Baden. The three-year-old filly, who was most recently seen taking out the Kilvington Stakes (Listed, 6f) at Nottingham, beat Millowitsch (Sehrezad) by three quarters of a length with Mc Queen (Silver Frost) a further half a length adrift in third. Artistica is one of 34 stakes winners for Areion (Big Shuffle). by a length and three quarters with another three lengths back to Neptune’s Rain (Antonius Pius) in third. Brave Tin Soldier stands at Summerhill Stud in South Africa for a fee of R15,000 and Brave Mary joins Rabada as the sires other stakes and Grade One winner. Fifth Grade One Win For AliceThe Sean Tarry-trained Carry On Alice (5 m ex Captain Al - Carry on Katie by Western Winter) secured her fifth Grade One win when she landed the South African Fillies Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) at Scottsville yesterday. The five-year-old mare, whose most recent success at the top-level came when she took out the Cape Flying Championship Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at Kenilworth on 28 January, scored a length victory over Just Sensual (Dynasty) with the same distance back to The Secret Is Out (Captain Al) in third. Carry On Alice is one of 77 stakes winners and 14 Group/Grade One winners for sire Captain Al (Al Mufti). Two For ToreadorBull Valley (4 h Star of Liberty by Saumarez) followed up stablemate Carry On Alice’s success in the South African Fillies Sprint when he won the Tsogo Sun Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) at Scottsville to provide trainer Sean Tarry with a Grade One double and also hand sire Toreador (Danehill) with his second Grade One winner. The four-year-old entire was most recently seen running fourth in the Senor Santa Stakes (Gr 2, 1160m) at Turffontein on 25 March, beat Search Party (Captain Al) by a length and a half with another length back to Barbosa (Captain Al) in third. Analysis: Clearly Innocent, a very good winner of the Luskin Star Stakes (Listed, 1300m) at Scone at his second run this preparation for new trainer Kris Lees was even more impressive in winning here, his first victory at Group One level. He settled back in third last place in the 13-horse field, behind a good pace, improved (wide with cover) from the 700m, got to fourth at the 300m, took the lead at the 100m and went on to score a very smart win, handling the conditions well. Noted wet-tracker Jungle Edge went to the front, claimed what looked a winning break on turning for home and was only headed at the 100m to finish second after running a bold race. Counterattack raced back in tenth place, improved (wide with cover) from the 700m, went to third at the 200m and held on nicely for a good third. Impending was seventh on the rails, got through on the inner at the home turn and battled on for (8.1 lengths) fourth. The favourite Black Heart Bart settled in second last place in the 13-horse field, commenced a move nearing the home turn and kept steadily making ground (under riding) in the straight to finish (9.1 lengths) fifth, without looking dangerous at any stage on the affected track.

(AUS), Mishani Bullitt (AUS), Showashadow (AUS), Noble Hussler (AUS), Champ Elect (AUS) & Ours To Keep (AUS), last.

Analysis: Group One-winning New Zealand filly Melody Belle was most impressive in winning here at her Australian debut. She was quickly away before easing to settle in fourth place, one off the rails. She moved up at the home turn, dashed to the front at the 200m and then raced away to score brilliantly, handling the conditions very well. Taking Aim settled in fifth place but caught deep from his wide barrier (15). He moved up strongly to take the lead on turning for home, was overtaken at the 200m but then held on really well for a very good second despite a difficult trip. Pierata raced in seventh place before improving nicely at the home turn. He went to third at the 200m and then held on very well for a good third, putting up a most promising effort at only his third race start.

Then followed: Pajaro (NZ), Amovatio (AUS), Religify (AUS), Saga Miss (AUS) & I’m Belucci (AUS), last.

Analysis: Col ‘N’ Lil, who resumed with a good win in the Weetwood Handicap (Listed, 1200m) at Toowoomba on 8 April, came out here three runs later to score a good win, her first at Group level. She began well, and settled nicely in third place (one off the rails) before getting to the front at the 600m. She was challenged at the 200m but kept fighting back gamely to score well. Duca Valentinois had a good trip in fourth place, got through to challenge at the 300m and kept fighting gamely for a good second. Elle Lou raced in sixth place, moved up well nearing the home turn, going to third on straightening and then kept battling on soundly to take the minor placing. The favourite Religify had a good run in third place but was under pressure on turning for home and dropped out to finish (12 lengths) sixth, racing well below his form on the affected Eagle Farm track.

Margins: 0.5 lens, 0.1 lens. Time: 2:22.93(last 600m 37.93).Betting: $61.00, $8.50, $5.00.

Analysis: In a surprise result the $61 outsider Kaiser Franz fought on too well to score here, his first win since a Benchmark 75 (2200m) at the Sunshine Coast last year. He had a good trip in sixth place, improved (between runners) from the 700m, switched to the inner on straightening and battled on a bit too well to grab a half-length win at the post. The New Zealander Zambezi Warrior settled back in tenth place (caught deep) before improving to be third (three wide without cover) at the 800m. He got to a narrow lead at the 200m and then fought on particularly well for a good second despite a very hard run. Favourite The Chairman raced outside the leader (Auvray), went to the front at the coming to the home turn and then battled strongly in the straight for a close up third, putting up a good staying effort.

Margins: 0.1 lens, 1.8 lens. Time: 2:22.30(last 600m 38.79).Betting: $4.30, $9.00, $17.00.

Analysis: Order Again followed his good second in the Rough Habit Plate (Gr 3, 2000m) at Doomben on 13 May with a narrow but really good win here. He settled in eighth place, improved well (between runners) nearing the home turn, took the lead coming to the 200m and then fought back to score a game win in a photo finish. The SA Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Volatile Mix settled towards the tail of the 14-horse field, moved up (widest of all) nearing the home turn, got to third at the 200m and continued to finish strongly to fail by the narrowest of margins in an impressive staying effort. Violate had a good trip in third place, on the rails, before getting through to take the lead at the 300m. He then held on well to take the minor placing. Of the more favoured runners: Shocking Luck led the field at a good tempo until turning for home but just battled in the affected Eagle Farm conditions to finish (9.2 lengths) sixth, racing well below his previous consistent and impressive form while the Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Prized Icon also raced well below expectations in the conditions, finishing (27 lengths) 11th.

Analysis: The Goulburn-trained filly Eckstein followed her promising first up fourth in the Denise’s Joy Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Scone on 13 May to score a good win here. She settled nicely in fifth place on the rails from her inside barrier (1), got through on the inner to take the lead at the 200m and she then battled too well to score well. Egyptian Symbol raced in seventh place, commenced her run on straightening, got to fourth at the 200m and kept running on for a very good second. Sold For Song settled back in 11th place, put in a good run (in the centre of the track) from the 300m and kept finishing well for a good third. Miss Debutante was quickly away, went to the front and led the field until the 200m, holding on for (2.5 lengths) fourth while the favourite Raiment settled in third place, but caught wide without cover from her difficult barrier (12). She then held on in the straight for (3.8 lengths) fifth.

Dual Group 1 winning sprinter

Analysis: The Toowoomba-trained gelding Niccanova is now the winner of four of his five starts, following his first up win in a 3YO Handicap (1200m) at the Gold Coast on 13 May with a very good win, advancing to Group class here. He settled back in 13th place in the 17-horse field, improved nicely (wide with cover) from the 700m, went deep at the home turn, moved up smartly to challenge at the 200m and finished too well for a good win. Sylpheed raced in fifth place, trapped very deep from her wide barrier (15). She moved up quickly to take the lead at the 300m and then held on particularly well for a very good second after having a difficult trip. I Thought So had a nice run from his good barrier (3) in fourth place, moved up to challenge at the 300m and then kept fighting on well for a sound third. River Racer ran on nicely with a late run from 14th at the home turn for (1.5 lengths) fourth while the favourite, Godolphin-raced Tessara failed on the affected track, weakening after being in a challenging position at the home turn to finish (20 lengths) 15th.

Then followed: Lily The Pink (NZ), Miss Foxy Gal (AUS), Iffida (NZ), Trail Blazer (NZ), Lala Land (NZ) & Barbello (NZ), last.

Analysis: Not a certain starter due to the heavy track, Haussmann was given his opportunity and ploughed through the going to win quite well. He settled third last past the 1200m, made a forward move (wide) inside the 800m and continued to improve prior to straightening. Into the home straight he ranged up to co-lead at the 300m and rider Vinnie Colgan kept him going to hold out all challenges in a fighting win, his maiden win at start four. So Far Sokool co-led (one out) at the 600m, took over into the straight, was passed but never gave in to the line for a hard fought second. Ohceedee was well back turning in and ran on well, especially over the final 50m, for third from Lily The Pink, who ran on from the back, putting up a good effort on debut.

Then followed: My Psychiatrist (AUS), Danjeu (IRE), Richard Of Yorke (GB), Plot Twist (IRE), Big Blue (GB), Beyond Thankful (IRE), Multitude (AUS) & Slow Pace (USA), last.

Analysis: Allergic was not only rewarded for his recent consistency but gave his opposition no excuses plus weight. He was slow away and a clear last with a circuit of the track to run. Giving the leader ten lengths past the 1200m, rider Joshua Parr waited until the 600m before passing a single runner but they travelled well, five and six deep approaching the last corner to be handy enough to the pace. Widest, they gathered in the field and past the 300m were third and closing. Parr got busy at the 200m and they strode clear, simply outstaying them. Broadside had a nice run to the last corner, dashed to the lead at the 300m but could not hold out the winner. Soviet Courage was last at the 500m, accelerated near the fence to be second at the 300m and battled away for third from My Psychiatrist, who was a distant fourth. The first three were in a race of their own.

Analysis: Godolphin-raced colt Kementari improved on his debut second at Canterbury 17 days ago and won most impressively here. He jumped quickly from barrier six but settled fourth (rails), waited until they straightened then moved out three wide to go after the leader. Inside the 200m jockey Tye Angland pushed the button and they sprinted clear and came away at the line to score a very smart win. He looks a quality colt. Easy Go Easy Win co-led at the 200m and held on, although a distant second from Sambro, the other co-leader who faded slightly for third.

Analysis: Cliff's Edge went one better than his narrow debut second (caught in the last stride) at Ballarat two weeks ago. He led by a length at the 800m then punched out to a two length advantage just before straightening. Rider John Allen applied more pressure and they broke clear by three lengths inside the 300m. That break was too much for the chasers and they still had more than a length to spare at the post. Lone Eagle ran on strongly from well back for a sound second from Josephine Sea, who finished best of the rest but a distant third.
