BY TIM ROWE AND LLOYD JACKSON
The undoubted success of this
week’s New Zealand Bloodstock
Ready to Run Sale, which was
capped with a record late-session
$700,000 Savabeel (Zabeel) colt and five other
lots breaking the $300,000 mark yesterday,
has given the company immense confidence
heading into 2021.
Andrew Seabrook, NZB’s managing
director, last night was elated with the outcome
of the two-day juvenile sale in which overseas
buyers and a tight-knit community of local
agents helped the auction house achieve
“remarkable” results.
After ten horses were traded for $200,000
or more on day one, headlined by a $525,000
Sacred Falls (O’Reilly) colt, the bidding
competition remained strong on day two in
which a son of Exceed And Excel (Danehill)
($525,000) and a Tavistock (Montjeu) colt
($450,000) both made big sums.
The surge in sales yesterday, which Continued on page 2>>

continued on from a strong start on Wednesday,
led to 185 horses changing hands at an average
of $95,349, up on the same sale last year, at a
clearance rate of 77 per cent. The median of
$60,000 was the same as 2019.
“It’s been an amazing success and I can’t
quite believe it, actually,” Seabrook told ANZ
Bloodstock News.
“Up until last week we were apprehensive,
but we started to get cautiously optimistic
when we started to get all the registrations to
bid online. We were still very nervous about
how it was all going to unfold, so it exceeded all
expectations.
| 2 |
“We had people bidding online and if
they weren’t bidding online, they were bidding through their counterparts
here. It was quite remarkable.”
Australian auction houses Inglis and Magic Millions had ramped
up their digital presence significantly and encouraged greater use of
online bidding at their respective yearling, breeding stock and two-
year-old sales.
While the backend platform was already available, NZB elected to
build its own bespoke online bidding service and the investment paid
off at the two-year-old sale and Seabrook believes its effectiveness will
boost buyer and vendor confidence at company’s Karaka Yearling Sale in
January.
The NZB Sale, it could be argued, faced greater uncertainty than its
Australian counterparts with the international border closure and its
weaker domestic market but was able to achieve the highest-priced lot
of the three recent auctions, the second-highest average and the highest
clearance rate.
“It proved that you don’t actually have to be here on the ground to buy
and you don’t need to take the horses to the buyers,” he said.
“The bidding platform, combined with all the transparency and
information now that the buyer is being blessed with from the vendors, I
think it is only going to get better going forward.
“Even I was bidding on horses because some of our agents were so
busy. I normally flick one onto
them but they were so busy I
ended up bidding on horses,
which i haven’t done for ages.
“Sometimes there were four
bidders online and another four
in the ring. It was quite amazing.”
The NZB sale, according to
Seabrook, sold horses to buyers
who had never bought a horse
out of New Zealand before.
“I think that there is no doubt that is going to be the way of the future. I
still don’t think you can beat being on the grounds here, but I think people
are going to be more akin to and happier to bid remotely when they have
to,” he said.
“These results definitely give us confidence at a time when the industry
definitely needed it but there’s a bit of positivity around the moment.
“There’s light at the end of the tunnel and the sale just adds to the
news of Avondale, Ellerslie and Counties racing clubs (merging into a
super centre) during the week and the betting turnover is flying.
“The pinhookers are also going to walk away after the past couple
of days with a bit of confidence, which is good heading into the yearling
sales.”

He finished seventh and left Payne
rueing his decision, but yesterday Cherry Tortoni firmed into $6 second
favourite behind Young Werther (Tavistock) ($4.50).
"It's amazing how things can turn around, I was dirty on myself after
the Sydney run but today was much better," Payne told Racing, com.
"From a trainer's point-of-view, I didn't think he had a hard run. We'll
never know but I still think he had something left in the tank.
"He looked like he wanted to stargaze when he got to the front but,
still, it was good to see him back winning like that."
Jockey Billy Egan was able to circle the field on Cherry Tortoni to
defeat Khoekhoe (Turffontein) by a short neck with Johnny Get Angry
(Tavistock) seven lengths away in third.
"Once we got down the side, I just gave him breathing room and let
him build his momentum and swoop on them over the top," Egan said.
"I know he's won a couple of races, but he's got the on-and-off ability
without knowing what he is doing.
"He's got a lot of learning to do. To see what he's doing now, all natural
ability, is really nice."
Morning line favourite Young Werther, who was runner-up in the
Super Impose Stakes (Listed, 1800m), was scratched from the Vase by
trainer Danny O’Brien after the track was downgraded to a Soft 7 earlier in
the day. The Derby remains on the agenda.
Keeping in mind what Payne considers as an error of judgment by
sending the horse to Sydney earlier this month, Payne was circumspect
about not wanting to overtax Cherry Tortoni in Saturday’s Derby.
"We're really mindful that, I think, he'll be a nice four, five and six-year-
old," Payne said.
"It was a good tune-up for the Derby but if he shows us any signs that
he doesn't want to go there then we won't."
From seven starts, which includes a victory in the Gibson Carmichael
Stakes (Listed, 1600m) at Flemington in July, Cherry Tortoni has won four
races and recouped $392,125 in prize-money.
Cherry Tortoni (3 g Night Of Thunder - Tortoni by Strategic), a homebred
for Sandy Tait, is a grandson of Group 1-winning mare Whisked (Whiskey
Road) who, of course, is the dam of champion Tie The Knot (Nassipour), and
stakes winners Hood (Shamardal) and Dream Ballad (Singspiel).
Tortoni, Cherry Tortoni’s mother, won a Wagga maiden in 2013 shortly
before being retired. She has a yearling filly by Coolmore shuttler Churchill
(Galileo) and was covered by Mendelssohn (Scat Daddy) last year.
Tough Dissident filly lands Fillies Classic
Troy Corstens has praised Yes Baby Yes’ (Dissident) constitution
after the three-year-old filly broke through for her first stakes victory
in the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic (Gr 2, 1600m) at her ninth start in a
preparation that started ten months ago.
Runner-up to Incredulous Dream (Press Statement) at her previous
start at Caulfield on October 17, jockey Craig Williams was able to dictate
the pace of the $300,000 Group 2 three-year-old fillies race.
She had a margin of three and three-quarter lengths over Ecumenical
(Zebedee), who ran fourth in the MRC Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m),
with another two lengths back to Miss Inbetween (Fighting Sun).
"She's as tough as nails," trainer Corstens said. "You wouldn't believe
it, but she's been up since January this girl.
"Raced as a two-year-old, right into her three-year-old year. Nine runs
for this prep."
Corstens acquired a farm near Benalla and he credited the property
for being able to keep Yes Baby Yes in work for so long.
"She goes (to the farm) on a Monday morning and she'll go out in the
paddock for three or four days - she still works while she's up there," said
Corstens who trains in partnership with his father Leon.
"(It) just keeps them happy. Some like going to the beach, some like
going to the paddock and she likes going to the paddock.
"I just love her. She's so tough. Things haven't always gone her way,
but she puts herself out in front and she held on today."
It was a red-letter day for Hunter Valley operation Newgate Farm with
resident stallions Dissident (Sebring) and Deep Field (Northern Meteor)
siring winners and first season sire Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt)
providing two juvenile winners.
Yes Baby Yes (3 f Dissident - Exabelle by Exceed And Excel), a
$120,000 purchase by Flemington Bloodstock and Malua Racing from
the 2019 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the Sledmere Stud
draft, has now earned $247,488 in prize-money after winning $180,000
yesterday.

Savabeel colt sells for $700,000When the highest-priced lot of the sale was sold in the Karaka twilight,
sale supremo David Ellis was not in his customary seat, but he was still
calling the shots from the car via Te Akau’s trainer Jamie Richards who
fended off a number of parties to land the Riversley Park-consigned
$700,000 colt, the most expensive horse sold at a NZB Ready to Run Sale.
“We thought he was the colt of the sale,” Richards said.
“He was a Savabeel that is medium-sized, very athletic, moved really
well and I couldn’t fault his attitude every time that we looked at him up
here (Karaka).
“He has been bought to hopefully develop into a stallion. He has got
the pedigree behind him that we think he is able to do so.”
Richards, so often in the shadow of Ellis at the Karaka sales ring, was
left in charge with the Te Akau principal having left the complex prior to
the horse going through the ring.
“He had to get down to Te Rapa for Karyn’s (Fenton Ellis) last AGM
as chairman of the Waikato Racing Club, so I had him on the phone,”
Richards said.
“We were getting towards the end of it, so it was great to get him for
$700,000 and hopefully we can develop him into a stallion that the New
Zealand industry can be proud of.”
Dean Hawthorne, Andrew Seabrook and Kane Jones, acting for clients
over the phone, were all bidding on the horse, as was Cambridge trainer
Roger James, the eventual under bidder.
“I honestly don’t know if we would have gone again,” Richards
said.
“Dave was pretty clear on the phone that that was the last bid.”
Catalogued as Lot 298, the colt was to be offered through the Henley
Park draft at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale earlier this year but,
like most of the New Zealand-consigned lots, were withdrawn after being
unable to fly into Australia for the Sydney auction.
The colt was bred by the Smithies family’s Monovale Farm in
Cambridge.
“We knew from the interest leading into the sale that we had a pretty
good horse on our hands, how good we weren’t sure,” an overwhelmed
Joe Smithies said.
“We were keen to get him on the market relatively early and it turns
out that was a good move.
“It was great to see two New Zealand guys going at him, and there was
plenty of interest from bidders online.
“It’s a huge result for the mare, Savabeel, Riversley and Monovale and
everyone at NZB as well.
“We are just over the moon. You are always optimistic but half the time
when you are optimistic you probably get caught out a little bit. We went
into it hoping it would go well but $700,000 is beyond optimistic.
“It is a family we have had a long time now and one that has been very
good to us.
“Miss Opulence is a six-year-old mare and is carrying her fourth
Savabeel. She has a yearling filly, a filly foal and is back in foal to Savabeel.
She is a very exciting broodmare for us going forward.”
Darci Brahma colt to take up residence in sire’s former box
Ellis also has a special place for Group 1 winner Darci Brahma
(Danehill), a horse his syndicate raced before he was retired to stud, and
yesterday the Te Akau Racing principal was determined to buy a colt by
the underrated stallion.
He paid $1.1 million for Darci Brahma as a yearling in 2004 out of
the Karaka sales ring but did not have to go that high when purchasing a
talented son for $350,000 on the second and final day of the ready to run
auction.

“I bought Darci Brahma, his sire, here
at the sales and he was a champion two-year-old, champion three-year-
old, and champion four-year-old, and he has been a fantastic success at
stud,” Ellis said.
“I have been waiting to buy what I thought was a really top Darci
Brahma yearling and I had to go to the Ready to run sale.
"I was here three days ago and I thought ‘that’s the best Darci Brahma
I have ever seen and I am going to buy him’.
“It is pretty exciting to have him. I am going to give him Darci Brahma’s
box which he had when he was a racehorse.”
Not offered at public auction as a weanling or a yearling, the Darci
Brahma colt, who is by the same sire as the Clayton Chipperfield-trained
Catalyst, caught the eye with a 10.94-second breeze-up at Te Rapa last
month.
“I paid a bit more than I thought I would have to but to buy these top
horses you have got to pay a bit more,” Ellis said.
“I don’t take too much notice of the breeze-ups, but he did breeze-up
very well and he impressed everybody that has been involved with the
horse,” Ellis said.
“It is the individual, their attitude, and type, which are more important
to me.”
Catalogued as Lot 219 and offered by Lilywhites Lodge, he is the first
foal out of the winning mare
Granadilla (Encosta De Lago)
who is a half-sister to the Group
3 winner Lilikoi (Charm Spirit).
“We are just over the moon
about the result. The look on
breeder Rob Tunnicliffe's face
was priceless,” said Lilywhites
Lodge’s Derek Nolan who was
acting as a vendor for just the

“We are so excited for him and also that he has gone to Te Akau. We
could not be happier.
“We have had terrific support and guidance from Mark Chitty of
Haunui Farm so we are lucky indeed to be going forward with them as
clients. Seeing the fruits so early in our business is very gratifying.”
Ellis bought nine two-year-olds for a combined spend of $1.52 million
to again claim the leading buyer title at Karaka.
Kelt back with a bang at KarakaSeven lots after the sale-topping Savabeel colt was sold, there was
also hot competition for a Tavistock colt offered by Curraghmore which
signalled the return of former highflying New Zealand owner and breeder
Sam Kelt.
Kelt, who outlaid $450,000 for Lot 305 under the guidance of agent
Bruce Perry, was blunt when asked about his notable absence from New
Zealand racetracks.
“We have come back and we are kicking some goals on the racing
side, but we’re not going to get involved in breeding again and we came
specifically to the sale to try and buy a Derby winner who could go on and
stay in Australia,” Kelt said.
“We had the huge South Canterbury Finance fraud brought against
us. It didn’t cost us much money, just $42 million, so it has taken us a little
bit of time to recover from that and one of the things we did was get out of
horses but we’re back.”
The colt, who breezed up in 11.92 seconds and was bred by Sir Owen
Glenn’s Go Bloodstock, will be trained by Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew
Scott.
“I thought he was a lovely horse, he was very well balanced and had a
lot of presence about him,” Perry said.
“He just looked like a ripper. For me, he was the pick of the colts in the
sale and he has been bought as a middle-distance Derby horse.”
The colt is the fifth foal out of the European stakes-placed mare
Mourasana (Shirocco), who is already the dam of Brisbane winner The
Golden Bear (Pierro), and is a half-sister to Group 2 winner Mouramara
(Kahyasi).
Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Mourayan (Alhaarth) and UK Listed
winner and Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) placegetter Mourilyan (Desert
Prince) are both out of Mouramara.
Curraghmore’s Gordon Cunningham revealed the popular son of
Tavistock was on the market from $100,000.

Lot 174 - $270,000Pierro-Crystal Fairy (Perugino) colt
Vendor: Kilgravin Lodge
Buyer: Cypress Point Farms’ Jenna Mahoney for a Hong Kong
client
Yearling price: $85,000 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale
purchase by Upper Bloodstock, Kilgravin Lodge and Waikato
Bloodstock
Breeze-up time: 10.90 seconds
“It’s an excellent result given that the interest and hits were
average and not exceptional, so I had him on the market at
$100,000. I knew he would sell, though, so the final price was a
pleasant surprise.” Kilgravin Lodge’s Eion Kemp said.
219 Darci Brahma - Granadilla colt TRISH DUNELL
IT IS PRETTY EXCITING TO HAVE HIM. I AM GOING TO GIVE HIM DARCI BRAHMA’S BOX WHICH HE HAD WHEN HE WAS A RACEHORSE- DAVID ELLIS
“He is full of quality and he completed
an excellent breeze up, so combine that with his huge pedigree page, it
matched his profile,” he said.
“I really hope that he will fulfil his new owners' dream of winning a
Derby, which is their fervent hope.”
Kelt and Perry also bought a Dundeel (High Chaparral) colt yesterday
for $200,000 from the Lyndhurst
Farm draft. He is out of Redoute’s
Choice (Danehill) mare Ladore
Falls and was offered as Lot 274.
“He was a lovely horse
too. Not a big horse but in that
Dundeel mold,” Perry said.
“He had a huge amount of
presence and a great head.”
Exceed And Excel colt a stunning result for Lyndhurst Farm
An Exceed And Excel (Danehill) colt shared the honours for the most
expensive horse of the sale for the majority of day two after being sold for
$525,000.
New Zealand trainer John Bell signed for the colt on behalf of an
overseas client.
Bidding with conviction, Bell outlasted agent Bevan Smith to land the
high-priced colt who breezed up in 10.74 seconds.
“There’s a touch of Julius to him and another very good horse Mosse.
That type of horse is what we go for,” Bell said.
“He was the horse that we just had to have and I would have got him for
$75,000 cheaper if it wasn’t for Steve Davis. He is a hell of an auctioneer.”
The horse’s future lays in Hong Kong, but first he will continue his
education at Bell’s Cambridge base with the colt likely to barrier trial
before boarding a flight.
“I have bought him for a friend in Hong Kong who has raced a number
of good horses, including Fellowship, who was a very good horse up there
by O’Reilly,” he said.
“I am not quite sure who the trainer will be up there yet but he will be
well prepared when he goes.”
Under bidder Smith said: “I really loved him and really wanted him.
Obviously, I am disappointed but also pleased for the Treweeks who are
such great people. I had $450,000 for him but John Bell had no limit, it
would appear.
“We went one more but it didn't work. I did my best but that's an
auction.”
By the same sire as star Godolphin sprinter Bivouac, who won the
Darley Sprint Classic (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington on the last day of the
carnival, he was purchased at the 2019 Inglis Australian Weanling Sale for
$100,000 and was withdrawn from the Easter sale in April when Covid-19
hit.
He is the sixth foal out of Chateau D’Yquem (Pins), herself a three-
quarter sister to champion New Zealand filly Katie Lee and a half-sister to
Gee I Jane (Jahafil), and a brother to the Melbourne city-placed two-year-
old Sauternes. He was catalogued as Lot 169.
“John Bell visited us a bunch of times over the last couple of days, so
we had a good idea that he would sell very well. The interest has been
enormous,” Lyndhurst Farm’s Mark Treweek said.
“On the way up I thought we might get $200,000 or more and that was
going to be my reserve. The interest combined with the way the sale went
on day one convinced me that we could up the ante, so he was on the
market at $300,000.”

Lot 208 - $210,000Artie Schiller- Flying Tilly (Umatillia) gelding
Vendor: Riversley Park
Buyer: Dean Hawthorne for Ricky Yiu
Yearling price: $70,000 from NZB Karaka Yearling Sale for Phill
Cataldo Bloodstock
Breeze-up time: 10.53 seconds
“He’s a big leggy gelding who breezed up with the No Nay
Never we bought yesterday. That's what got us interested,”
Hawthorne said. “It took a while to buy him being on the phone
via Hong Kong. He’s a nice type, so he should go well.”

Treweek said it was harder to judge
the market in the lead-up to the sale given the number of buyers who were
operating online.
“On other years, you come to the sale thinking you have a $400,000 to
$450,000 colt all day, but under these conditions it’s hard to gauge being
quiet on parades but he’s been popular with all the top buyers,” he said.
“He’s just all quality. From the day we broke him in, we’ve had a very
high opinion of him. He’s one of those horses who when you first ride him
he just gets you. He’s a next-level type of horse and I am just rapt that he
found his value.”
Treweek and his wife
Shelley are regular buyers at the
Australian weanling sales and
the son of Exceed And Excel is
the latest example of Lyndhurst
Farm’s ongoing pinhooking
success.
“He was a bit weak and was a
lightly framed colt, but he had a
great walk on him then and had
a lovely figure about him which
is what we look for,” he said.
“Also, being an Exceed And
Excel, we’ve done out of them over the years and we had Mr Stunning a
few years ago who was a champion in Hong Kong.
“We know a little bit about the sire, so when you can get one for that
we were absolutely ecstatic.”
Bell praised the comradery of the New Zealand industry who have
banded together to assist the international buyers to participate in the
auction.
“The Asian market has a lot of confidence in the relationships with the
agents they have got over here,” Bell said.
“There are so many guys who know each other well and they trust
each other.
“The content that has been put out promoting the horses with videos,
photos, and run-ups, it’s just incredible.
“They don’t have to come down with all the information that is
supplied and with them trusting their agents down here.
“You can cross your Ts and dot your Is probably more so than previous
years.”
Laming looks to Karaka for next stable starMelbourne trainer Richard Laming will train a gelding by Bobby’s
Kitten (Kitten’s Joy) after being purchased for $320,000 midway through
day two of the Ready to Run Sale yesterday.
Agent John White handled the bidding for Laming, who has in the past
enjoyed success out of the NZB two-year-old sale when paying $300,000
for Master Montaro (Toronado) in 2018.
After winning a maiden earlier this year, Laming on-sold the gelding
to a client of David Hayes for about $1.5 million.
By Twin Hills Stud’s one-year shuttler Bobby’s Kitten, the gelding
breezed up in 10.81 seconds at Te Rapa.
Offered by Jim Collett’s JC Thoroughbreds as Lot 247, he was a
$55,000 purchase at the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale from the
Glastonbury Farms draft. He is the third foal out of seven-time winner Just
A Girl (Not A Single Doubt), whose second foal Nantucket (Rubick) won
at Bendigo recently.
“The breeze-up did it for me. According to Trudy Thornton he could
have gone quicker. She was swinging on him. He did it on his ear,” White
said.

“I believe he came from the Adelaide

Richard Laming in Melbourne.
“His half-brother is in Melbourne and set a track record at Bendigo
recently.”
Collett said: “He’s a smart gedling. I've had him for four or five months
after he was purchased for $55,000 out of the Adelaide sale and I have
been impressed.
“I have ridden him and I am looking forward to seeing what he can do
in the future.”
A Siyouni (Pivotal) colt, from the Ohukia Lodge draft, also sold well
yesterday, bought by a Hong Kong owner for $350,000 after breezing up
in 10.42 seconds. Out of European-bred mare Hidden Gem (Shamardal),
a three-quarter sister to dual Victorian Listed winner Haripour, he was
catalogued as Lot 230.

Brown booked for Kay Cee
Jockey Jason Brown will take his first ride on
Kingston Town Classic (Gr 1, 1800m) winner
Kay Cee (Playing God) in the Railway Stakes
(Gr 1, 1600m), with Steven Parnham - who has
ridden the mare, trained by his father Neville,
at each of her 12 starts - on the injured list.
Parnham fell from Powerful (Nicconi) at Ascot
on Wednesday and was diagnosed with three
rib fractures and small thoracic spine fractures
after the incident. Parnham will be out for at
least a month, missing most of Perth’s Masters
including the Railway Stakes, the Winterbottom
Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and the Kingston Town
Classic. Brown’s rides in the Railway Stakes have
been few and far between in recent years, but
he has finished second twice on Old Comrade
(Old Spice) and Famous Roman (Danetime),
while he was third on Blinded (Marwina).
Raymond aims for Cup with PacodaliMaddie Raymond is hoping Pacodali (Paco
Boy) can provide her with a Ballarat Cup
(Listed, 2000m) winner in her first year of
training. Raymond gained her licence in
February and has so far had 32 runners for four
country winners. Before she gained her training
licence, she had spent over a decade working
in stables, firstly with Lindsay Park and also
with Willie Mullins in Ireland. She then came
back to Australia and joined Darren Weir's
Warrnambool stables where she worked for
seven years and graduated to stable foreman.
When Weir was disqualified, Raymond took
on the same position for Lindsey Smith but
decided to branch out on her own at the start
of the year. Raymond said Pacodali was ready
to run a big race after his unlucky run when
attempting to defend his Eclipse Stakes (Gr 3,
1800m) crown at Sandown on Saturday. "He got
held up in the straight and he's not the horse to
accelerate through gaps," she said. It's a strong
race. If he can finish top-five I'd be thrilled.
Just to have a horse good enough to run in a
$500,000 race is pretty exciting."
Sargent heads south for Clockwise ClassicJohn Sargent will have his first runner in the
Magic Millions Clockwise Classic (1000m)
courtesy of Readily Availabull (Bull Point),
who won his trial over 900 metres at Rosehill
last week. The race can prove confusing
for juveniles, but Sargent believes Readily
Availabull can cope with the clockwise run. "He
seems well seasoned that way (clockwise)," he
told Racing.com. "He trialed well the other day
and I asked Brenton Avdulla to go to the line
with him so he knows what he's doing so he's
ready for what's ahead of him. He travels down
tonight and Micky Dee rides him on Friday to
get a feel of him and he should be ready to go.
Her run was very game in the Ottawa so if she
can bring that to that way of going, she will be
in it for a long way. I'm expecting she can turn
it around."
Blinkers on Butter BlondeOttawa Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) third Butter Blonde
(Choisir) will wear blinkers in the Magic Millions
Clockwise Classic at Ballarat after struggling in
her first serious gallop in the reverse direction.
The filly competed in a right-handed jump out
earlier this week, which is part of the qualification
criteria for Saturday's race, and co-trainer Adrian
Bott admits she was all at sea. "We did send her
out to Ballarat during the week for a jump out
and it was her first experience that way of going,"
Bott said. "She did get very lost that way. She gets
the blinkers for the first time and she's a ready-
made runner, which is what we've seen at her first
couple of runs."
Poignant Purplegoes for GongPurple Sector (Pins) bids to deliver victory for
John Thompson in the $1 million The Gong
(1600m), eight days after he claimed the $1
million The Hunter (1300m) with Sweet Deal
(Casino Prince). The five-year-old was gelded
at the end of his autumn preparation and has
since notched two wins and a narrow second in
three spring runs, with victory in the Melbourne
Cup Day Plate (Listed, 1800m) last time out the
highlight. Thompson sent Purple Sector for a
freshen up in the paddock after his Cup-day
win and said the horse had continued to thrive
since returning to Sydney. "He really freshened
up nicely and when he came back to Randwick
he was in tip-top order again," Thompson said.
"His last win at Randwick was super. He won
it very well and he ran good time doing it. In
Melbourne, he was terrible. He just didn't get
on the right leg there at any stage and never
travelled but at least once he balanced up in the
straight he was good enough to get himself out
of trouble."

Gelded Big Parade back at KemblaBig Parade (Deep Field) will return in a
Benchmark 78 at Kembla Grange on Saturday
after being gelded due to his misdemeanors.
The Mark Newnham-trained four-year-old won
by five and a half lengths at Canterbury on his
last start, but had to be scratched from his next
race after injuring himself while misbehaving in
the float. "He is back with a major gear change,"
Newnham said. "His behaviour was awful. He
threw himself around on the truck travelling
out there and hit his head and had a bit of blood
coming from his nose, that's why he ended up
being scratched. He travelled back even worse.
That's why we gelded him and we've just kept
him ticking over in the stables. He's got every
chance now to realise his potential without any
other distractions”
Thompson aims to go one better with RecklessBen Thompson has been booked to ride
Reckless Choice ( Choisir) for Steven O'Dea
and Matt Hoysted in the Mooloolaba Cup
(1600m) at Sunshine Coast on Saturday. The
six-year-old gelding is aiming to go one better
on his performance in last year's renewal
when he finished second to The Candy Man
(Casino Prince). "He's going every bit as good
as he was last year and it was encouraging
to see him attack the line as strongly as he
did last start," Hoysted said. "The step up
from 1350 metres to the mile is only going to
suit him better." Reckless Choice has drawn
barrier 12 on Saturday, the same gate he
jumped from in last year's race. "It's a bit of
a shame about the barrier but the horse is
going super and hopefully we can get a bit
of luck and get in somewhere," Hoysted said.
"He'll probably be back in the second half of
the field from that gate but there should be a
nice, genuine tempo."
SA trainers permitted to exercise horsesTrainers in South Australia were given
good news yesterday as the SA Government
approved the continued care and excise of
thoroughbreds within the state, allowing
industry participants exemption to the
six-day lockdown restrictions imposed on
Wednesday. "This is obviously a great result
and the right outcome for the welfare of our
beloved horses," Richard Jolly, who is SA
Trainers’ Association president and trains in
partnership with his daughter Chantelle, told
Racing.com. "By the time we were advised
this morning of the decision it was too late to
do anything about opening the track today.
Fellow trainers I spoke with had already put
contingency plans in overnight including
telling some staff not to turn up for work.
Most would have treated it like a Sunday
morning, which is generally the quiet day at
a racing stable. With our walking machine,
Chantelle and I were able to exercise our 40
horses, five at a time, in 20-minute intervals.
Thankfully we won't have to continue down
that path because some horses would just go
stir crazy if that was all they could do.”
Victoria to accept SA horsesRacing Victoria confirmed yesterday that South
Australian horses will continue to be allowed
to race in Victoria, despite the state closing its
border to SA after their decision to impose a
six-day lockdown. Trainers will have to follow
RV protocols for horse transportation, which
state horses have to travel by an approved
float company and are placed with a Victorian
trainer by 9am on the day before they are due
to race. Participants from SA are not permitted
to attend race meetings or licensed premises
without first completing the required isolation
period.
Hickmott scratches Sky PunchSouth Australian trainer Michael Hickmott
will not run Sky Punch (Alamosa) at
Saturday’s Ballarat Cup meeting. Victoria
announced yesterday that horses from SA
will be allowed to run in the state during SA’s
six-day lockdown, but despite this Hickmott
believes it would be inappropriate to send
his horse to Ballarat. “Regarding our social
licenses, I’m not going to send him. I think
it would be an inappropriate thing to do
given the circumstances,” Hickmott told
Racing.com. “Everyone is working their best
throughout South Australia and Victoria to
get on top of this stuff. So I am just going to
elect to find another race for him. We all have
to work at this collectively. We are working
through a difficult time, together, and it’s not
ideal for anyone but if racing gets shutdown
then it’s going to be worse for the entire
horse, owner, trainer population. You have
got to look at the bigger picture sometimes.”
Sense of timing for HardacreSouth Australian trainer Peter Hardacre will
have four runners in Victoria today, after
sending them to the neighbouring state
before SA imposed the six-day lockdown.
Isa Secret (Outreach), Centenary Shot
(Soldier's Tale) and emergencies Cosmo
Rock (Valentia) and Quiet Class (Supreme
Class) are all accepted for Terang on Friday.
"The horses are already over there, and the
one for Moonee Valley is in Victoria as well,"
Hardacre told Racing.com. "It's a little bit of
luck. They were all in at Naracoorte as well.
So I'm glad we pulled the right rein this
time to go to Victoria. The Terang horses are
staying at Warrnambool with Luke Williams,
and the one going to Moonee Valley has gone
to James Bull. He's got a runner there too, so
he's taking it up for me." Hardacre has been
sending his horses across to Victoria early
due to Covid-19. "That's the only reason. We
are right on the border," he said. "A lot of the
Victorian trips are closer for us than going to
Adelaide. Adelaide is five hours for us, where
we can get right through to Geelong in four,
Ballarat in four."
Callow ride under investigationNoel Callow has been charged for not giving
his horse full opportunity to win or obtain its
best possible finish after his ride on the Nick
Ryan-trained Grand Pope (More Than Ready)
at Benalla in September. Following an inquiry,
stewards allege that Callow failed to improve
his position when approaching and passing the
300 metres for at least seven strides when there
was sufficient room to do so, while also alleging
Callow of failing to ride Grand Pope with
purpose from 120 metres out. The charge will
be heard before the Victorian Racing Tribunal
on a date to be fixed.

Adkins eyes returnAndrew Adkins, who suffered a terrible fall
aboard Hot ‘N’ Hazy (Snitzel) in July, is hoping
to return to action at the beginning of 2021.
Adkins had to have a rod but in his tibia and a
plate in his clavicle, while also suffering eight
broken ribs and a punctured lung following
the incident at Rosehill, which resulted in
Hugh Bowman receiving a lengthy ban for his
involvement in the incident. Adkins will be able
to give a clearer recovery timeline after seeing
his specialist early next month. "I'm sure he will
give me an update then. But he's only looking
at x-rays, so it's really up to me and when I feel
like it's 100 per cent or close to it," Adkins told
Racing.com. "At the moment I am trying to look
towards January and get back in the new year,
which is five weeks away. Hopefully I can keep
working towards that date. Whether it's a bit
longer or a bit shorter, I don't know. I just have
to keep doing the right thing to get to the stage
where I can get back on a horse. My collarbone
and ribs are all healed and I obviously had the
punctured lung as well, which is pretty good.
It's just my leg now, which is going good. There's
still a bit of pain there. But it's going well, it just
has a little bit to go. I've got to get that muscle
back and it doesn't come back overnight."
NEW ZEALAND
Eccles ready to shineNew Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) winner
Jennifer Eccles (Rip Van Winkle) returns to
fillies and mares company in tomorrow’s
Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (Gr
2, 1400m) at Pukekohe, with co-trainer Shaune
Ritchie confident she can bounce back from a
disappointing effort at her latest outing in last
month’s Windsor Park Plate (Gr 1, 1600m). “I’m
expecting a good performance from her,” said
Ritchie, who trains in partnership with Colm
Murray. “I wouldn’t be running a horse of her
calibre if she wasn’t close to being back to her
best. She hasn’t had a trial and hasn’t raced for
seven weeks but that last run was certainly a
torrid run second-up. We’ve given her a couple
of weeks in the paddock and freshened her
right up. Her trackwork and appetite have been
superb so I see no reason not to run. We will
watch her performance very closely before we
evaluate what to do for the rest of the season
with her. The first-up race was excellent, she
had a lovely run. Second-up, with The Mitigator
setting that breakneck pace, it gave everyone a
tough run two weeks after a hard enough first
run. She looked like a kindergarten kid in a
college race with the likes of Melody Belle and
Avantage in there. They are battle-hardened
horses that have been at this level for two or
three years and are very good at what they
do. To step out of three-year-old fillies and go
against them is not easy to do.”
Rock On Wood on target for Captain CookA second straight victory in the Country Cup
(1400m) at Awapuni tomorrow would put
Rock On Wood (Redwood) firmly in the picture
for next month’s Captain Cook Stakes (Gr 1,
1600m) at Trentham. Last year, Rock On Wood
beat Wyndspelle (Iffraaj) by a long neck in the
Country Cup, with Wyndspelle going on to
take the Captain Cook Stakes at his next start.
"I'd just love to win a Group race with him, and
he deserves to. He's been unlucky in a few big
ones. And he tries so hard," trainer Leanne
Elliot said. "He's got the weight I expected. He's
just got to run and be competitive. He'll go a
good race. He just needs the run to have him
spot on for the Captain Cook." Rock On Wood
has won six of his 15 starts and has finished in
the top four in Group races six times, including
third in the Herbie Dyke Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m)
earlier this year.
Julius to make racecourse returnFresh from purchasing the horse he termed
“his pick” of the New Zealand Bloodstock
Ready to Run Sale, trainer John Bell will
send out stable star Julius (Swiss Ace) in the
Counties Bowl (Listed, 1100m) at Pukekohe
tomorrow. This year’s Railway Handicap (Gr
1, 1200m) victor has only had one run this
season, finishing seventh in the Foxbridge
Plate (Gr 2, 1200m) and pulling up with heel
issues. “His bumpers were red raw (after
the Foxbridge) which upset us with all the
issues he has had in the past,” Bell said.
“That particular day turned into a disaster,
but his heels are good now and we are more
than happy with him. I was happy with his
exhibition gallop and I can say he is better
now than what he was this time last year. He
has drawn the outside gate (in the Counties
Bowl), it won’t worry us too much. That grey
mare of Alex Oliveira’s (Only In Jakarta) may
head to the front,” he said. “From that draw
we will be camped outside the first three or
four. We would love him to weigh in, but New
Year’s (the Railway) is our aim.”
Strong hand for PattersonNew Plymouth trainer Robbie Patterson has
a solid team of seven horses set to contest the
Taranaki meeting today, headed by maiden
Regal Ruby (Night Of Thunder) in a Pearl Series
event. “She had a woman’s problem that we
fixed up after the last race, which was giving
her aggravation so she had a caslick done,”
Patterson said. “The 1400 metres will suit her
better as long as the rail is not too far out. We
had a bit of rain last night and it’s drying today
but the rail could be out. She will be a big
chance.” Stablemate Bold Bette (The Bold One)
also finished runner-up last start and Patterson
said she will appreciate the drop back to 1400
metres: “I just wanted to run her over 1800
metres last time, but we have freshened her up
and brought her back to 1400 metres. If she can
position midfield from her draw I think she will
be pretty hard to beat.” Bold Bette will be met
by stablemate Puntura (Vespa) who finished
fifth on debut: “It was a good run, but he’s a big
dumb bugger, he will take a bit of time. But he
will roll forward and put himself in the picture.
I would be happy if he could place.” Debut
winner Klaasen (Niagara) and first-starters Sir
Baldrick (Perfectly Ready) and Nun Hissing
(Alamosa) will be joined by maiden Our Fair
Trade (Nom Du Jeu).

ASIA
Gran Alegria, Salios clash in Mile ChampionshipThe slew of top-level contests continues in
Japan and the spotlight remains firmly on
Hanshin racecourse on Sunday with the Mile
Championship (Gr 1, 1600m). Normally held at
Kyoto, this race has been moved and will take
place at Hanshin for the first time in the race’s
36-year history due to renovation of Kyoto
racecourse. The change in venue represents
a return to familiar ground for a number of
Mile Championship hopefuls. Among the 17
runners are eight Group 1 winners, including
four that have aced one of the three Hanshin
mile Group 1s – 2019 Asahi Hai Futurity
Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) champion Salios (Heart’s
Cry) and his predecessor in the Asahi Hai
Futurity, and the 2019 Hong Kong Mile (Gr 1,
1600m) winner, Admire Mars (Daiwa Major);
Resistencia (Daiwa Major), first home in the
2019 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies (Gr 1, 1600m);
and 2019 Oka Sho (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Gran
Alegria (Deep Impact), who also pocketed the
Yasuda Kinen (Gr 1, 1600m) at Tokyo, as well as
the Sprinters Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Nakayama
this year. Add to that the winner of the 2020
NHK Mile Cup (Gr 1, 1600m) – Lauda Sion (Real
Impact) – and you have quite the formidable
field. Gran Alegria is likely to start favourite
after her breathtaking win last time out, but
Salios shapes as a potential star despite finding
Contrail (Deep Impact) too good in the Satsuki
Sho (Gr 1, 2000m) and the Tokyo Yushun (Gr 1,
2400m).
INTERNATIONAL
12 for VadamosThe Joseph O’Brien-trained Messidor (2 f ex
Pyrenean Queen by Zoffany) took out a fillies’
maiden over seven furlongs on Dundalk’s
all-weather surface on Wednesday evening,
earning first season sire Vadamos (Monsun)
his 12th individual winner. Messidor’s first win
came at the third time of asking but the filly had
shown promise on her first two appearances,
including a half-length defeat on debut. She
was sent off an evens favourite under Declan
McDonogh and comfortably landed the contest
by two and a quarter lengths, with runner-
up Golden Lyric (Lope De Vega) pulling well
clear of Blue Bunny (Markaz) in third. Rich Hill
shuttler Vadamos, a Group 1 winner in France,
stands 2020 for NZ$15,000 + GST.
43 for Siyouni Honey Cake (3 f ex Pink Anemone by Dansili)
took out the Prix Ceres (Listed, 1400m) at
Fontainebleau yesterday to bring up Siyouni’s
(Pivotal) 43rd individual stakes winner.
Remarkably, Siyouni was the sire of the first
four horses home, with Private Romance
finishing one and three-quarter lengths
behind Honey Cake in second. Femina was a
neck behind in third, while Marly brought up
the Siyouni quartet in fourth. Aga Khan Stud’s
Siyouni, the sire of this year’s Prix de l'Arc de
Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Sottsass,
has had his fee raised to €140,000 (approx.
AUD$227,850), up from €100,000 (approx.
AUD$162,750), for 2021.
30 for KingmanKinross (3 c ex Ceilidh House by Selkirk) became
Kingman’s (Invincible Spirit) 30th individual
stakes winner when he landed the Hyde Stakes
(Listed, 1m) on the all-weather at Kempton on
Wednesday night. The Ralph Beckett-trained
colt had not won since his eight-length maiden
victory on debut at Newmarket over 12 months
ago but ended his drought with a three-quarter-
length win over favourite Khuzaam (Kitten's
Joy). Via Serendipity (Invincible Spirit) finished
a length behind the winner in third. Juddmonte
announced last week that star stallion
Kingman’s stud fee will remain at £150,000
(approx. AUD$272,670) in 2021.
UK: Zoustar’s Galileo half-brother debutsKondo Isami (Galileo), a half-brother to
champion Australian stallion Zoustar
(Northern Meteor), made a promising debut to
his racing career with a runner-up effort on the
all-weather at Newcastle overnight. The Mark
Johnston-trained Kondo Isami was sent off a
20-1 chance but finished nine lengths behind
the well-fancied 1-3 shot Teona (Sea The Stars),
who finished a length behind Sea Empress (Sea
The Stars) on his debut last month. Teona is out
of Group 1 winner Ambivalent (Authorized),
who finished 17th in the 2014 Melbourne Cup
(Gr 1, 3200m). Kondo Isami, who finished
three lengths clear of third-placed Silver
Horn (Golden Horn), became the third foal
of Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) mare Zouzou
to race in Europe, after At Last (Galileo), who
was winless from four attempts, and Emperor
Of The Sun (Galileo), who is under the care
of Donnacha O’Brien and has won once from
nine starts. Kondo Isami holds an entry for
next year’s Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) at Epsom.
Zoustar, crowned champion Australian first
and second season sire, produced his 167th
winner at Wyong on Wednesday when the Gai
Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Belieber
won an 1100-metre maiden.
IRE: Australian Group 1 winner takes Irish claimerComin’ Through (Fastnet Rock), who took out
the 2018 Doomben Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) among
other Australian stakes victories, won his first
race in over two years in a Dundalk claiming
race on Wednesday night. The seven-year-old
gelding, who is now rated 83, won the contest
by an emphatic seven lengths from Boitron (Le
Havre) to end a 17-race losing streak. "I don't
think the Australians will be too happy with me
running a Group 1 horse in a claiming race,"
winning trainer Johnny Levins told Irishracing.
com. "He was very stale when we got him and
we just tried to sweeten him up. We've done
very little work with him. He had a nice run
up here and we felt a pair of blinkers would
sharpen him back up. He's hosed up and won
by seven lengths. He's obviously rekindled
some of his old form. I'll be happy enough if I
can get another couple of wins out of him if he's
not claimed."

US: Keeneland officials celebrate as ten-day sale concludesKeeneland’s November Breeding Stock
Sale ended on Wednesday after ten days of
competitive trade for broodmares, broodmare
and stallion prospects, weanlings and horses
of racing age, including nine horses sold for
US$1 million or more. “Keeneland ends this
fall with a sense of gratitude for the hard work
of everyone who participated in the success
of the September Yearling and November
Breeding Stock Sales, the fall race meet and
Breeders’ Cup,” said Keeneland president and
chief executive Bill Thomason, who will retire
on December 31 after a decade of service to
Keeneland. “Given the impact of the Covid-19
pandemic on the global horse industry, the
fact that we were able to conduct our fall
events on the dates originally scheduled
is a major accomplishment that should be
celebrated by all involved.” For the entire
auction from November 9-18, Keeneland
recorded gross sales of US$151,019,300
(approx. AUD$207,742,300) for 2,198
horses, for an average of US$68,708 (approx.
AUD$94,514) and a median of US$23,000
(approx. AUD$31,638). The 2019 November
Sale, which spanned 12 sessions, had 2,570
horses sell in the ring for US$193,316,100,
for an average of US$75,220 and a median of
US$25,000.
UK: Government pledges £40m direct aid to racing in fight against CovidThe British government has announced
that racing will receive £40 million (approx.
AUD$72.8 million) in direct aid as part of wider
financial support for major spectator sports in
England. The emergency funding is composed
mainly of low-interest government loans. "Sport
is a key part of our national life, an important
contributor to our economy and a key hub
within many communities," said Steve Barclay,
chief secretary to the Treasury. "Protecting
that sporting heritage and supporting as many
jobs within the sports sector as possible is an
important step in ensuring that our economy
can bounce back from the impacts of the Covid
pandemic. Alongside this financial support,
we now need to ensure that fans can return
to sports events as soon as it is safe to do so."
A British Horseracing Authority statement
said: "We welcome the announcement by @
DCMS that up to £40m of loans will be made
available for British racing.
This recognises racing's
position as the UK's
second biggest
spectator sport, the
many livelihoods
it supports and the
financial peril faced
across our industry.”

MAIDEN OF THE WEEK
| 16 |
The debut victory of Avonallo (2 c
Belardo - Real Angel by O’Reilly)
in last Saturday’s Welcome Stakes
(Listed, 1000m), the season’s first
New Zealand stakes race for the juveniles,
represented a string of firsts for sire Belardo
(Lope De Vega), but on his dam’s side, Avonallo
was the second maiden winner of the week for
dam Real Angel (O’Reilly).
Making his third raceday appearance on
Saturday, Avonallo was sent out as the $2.40
second favourite as he lined for his third clash
with $2.10 favourite Follow Your Dreams
(Contributer), who had won their first two
match-ups.
Showing the benefit of his first two runs, the
Opie Bosson-ridden Avonallo settled outside
Follow Your Dreams,
who led after shifting
out abruptly at the start.
He raced up to challenge
the pacesetter at the 400
metres and, unlike his
first two starts, he raced
clear for a facile two-
length victory.
Follow Your Dreams
finished second, with
a further two and a
quarter lengths back
to Global Beauty (Highly
Recommended) in third.
Bred by Little Avondale, the stud offered
Avonallo for sale at this year’s NZB National
Yearling Sale. Purchased by Chris Rutten for
NZ$30,000, Little Avondale remains in the
ownership with a potential stallion prospect on
their hands should he continue to improve.
In Avonallo, Haunui shuttler Belardo - who
has shuttled from Darley’s Kildangan Stud to
the Karaka farm since 2017 - registered his first
southern hemisphere winner, let alone his first
New Zealand stakes scorer, with the victory of
the Jamie Richards-trained Avonallo.
Belardo, who won the Dewhurst Stakes
(Gr 1, 7f) as a two-year-old for trainer Roger
Varian before adding to his Group 1 tally with
a Lockinge Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) triumph at four,
had already registered a total of 12 winners in
the UK, Ireland, France and Kazakhstan before
New Zealand joined the list on Saturday.
Among his best performers are Rockfel
Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) heroine Isabella Giles, Group 3
winners Lullaby Moon and Elysium and French
Listed victor Belloccio.
He stands this season at Haunui Farm for
NZ$10,000 (plus GST).
But where Avonallo was a first for Belardo,
she was a second winner for the week for dam
Real Angel.
The O’Reilly (Last Tycoon) mare was
unraced and has had three named foals for two
winners, including Avonallo; her five-year-old
daughter Angelica (Per Incanto) also broke her
maiden last week, scoring a first victory at start
14 in a 1200-metre Te Aroha maiden.
Real Angel is a half-sister to the Group
2-placed Marquardt (Shamardal), who won
both the Nivison Stakes (Listed, 1200m) and the
Twilight Glow Stakes (Listed, 1400m).
Second dam Centrefold Angel (Centaine)
is an unraced half-sister to 1996 Ballarat Cup
(Listed, 2200m) winner McGuane (McGinty),
while the family also includes Group 1 winners
Ballroom Babe (Citidancer), Polanski (Rakti)
and Dandy Andy (Three Legs).
