DV8 Physical Theatre’s new production, JOHN, authentically depicts real-life stories, combining movement and spoken word to create an intense and moving theatrical experience. Lloyd Newson, DV8’s Artistic Director, interviewed more than 50 men asking them frank questions, initially about love and sex. One of those men was John. What emerged was a story that is both extraordinary and touching. Years of crime, drug use and struggling to survive lead John on a search in which his life converges with others, in an unexpected place, unknown by most. JOHN contains adult themes, strong language and nudity.

The artist earned staggering notoriety by revolutionizing the commercialization and accessibility of popular art with his enigmatic paintings of waifs with big eyes. The truth would eventually be discovered though: Keane’s art was actually not created by him at all, but by his wife, Margaret (Amy Adams). The Keanes, it seemed, had been living a lie that had grown to gigantic proportions. Big Eyes centres on Margaret’s awakening as an artist, the phenomenal success of her paintings, and her tumultuous relationship with her husband, who was catapulted to international fame while taking credit for her work.

Summer 1914. In order to dedicate themselves to a life of study, the King and his friends take an oath to avoid the company of women for three years. No sooner have they made their idealistic pledge than the Princess of France and her ladies-in-waiting arrive, presenting the men with a severe test of their high-minded resolve. Shakespeare’s sparkling comedy delights in championing and then unravelling an unrealistic vow, and mischievously suggesting that the study of the opposite sex is in fact the highest of all academic endeavours. Only at the end of the play is the merriment curtailed as the lovers agree to submit to a period apart, unaware that the world around them is about to be utterly transformed by the war to end all wars.

aFtERsELFIE13th February - 8th March- Main hall“Afterselfie” deals with the human being representation and seeks to look at the complexity of managing the distance between to be and to appear. This topic has been brought back by the current mania of taking selfies. People are obsessed by showing the self through self-pictures, planned arbitrarily, shared on the social networks to arouse admiration and a lot of “Likes”. Many people are building their social consensus by false representations of themselves. Essentially selfie-mania is bringing to current Pirandello’s theory about the living masks, with a contemporary meaning: according to Pirandello, XIX century Italian novelist, each man builds a mask to conform himself to society. The mask is the most obvious representation of the conviction of the individual to always play a role, imposed by society and based on social conventions. Afterselfie aims to stimulate a reflection about this theme and suggests an alternative to the contemporary “social” depiction of the individual: each of us will choose the most representative one for himself. On display Maltese and Italian artists: Raphael Vella, Ritty Tacsum, Elisa Von Brockdorff, Adrian Abela, Jacopo Dimastrogiovanni, Elia Nadie, Gabriele Grones and Debora Fella.
