    Greetings from the Presidents Ofce

I know I should not be thinking about Christmas, but I am still stuck in the reminders

of the holiday. This year I was reminded about how quickly things change in our lives.

For the rst time in thirty-four years, Christmas was not the same. It was 1975 when

my daughter was born followed in 1979 by my son. Since the Christmas of 1975,

there has always been at least one of my children opening presents on Christmas day,

followed by a large family meal.

When Christmas day arrived, my wife and I celebrated the way we did for the rst few

years of our marriage before our children arrived. In those early years, our house was

quiet and the sound of children had not yet entered our world. When our children were

born, the level of noise and excitement made each Christmas something to remember.

No matter how much or how little we had, Christmas was always a time when we as a

family could stop the world and share a few briefs moments together.

As Christmas arrived this year, the world that we had experienced for so many years

had come to an end. The sound and sights of our children on Christmas morning,

regardless of their ages, would not happen this year. Christmas was a little less frenetic

this year and a lot quieter. Our son was spending his rst Christmas away from home

working at the hospital, as he met the responsibility as a rst year resident. Our daughter

was entertaining her in-laws at her home in Atlanta with my two granddaughters.

As parents, it is difcult to accept the fact that our children will grow up and begin

to have lives that we cannot control. We spend our lives preparing them to be

independent and then want to turn back the clock to the times when they depended on

us for everything. During those early years, our children want our attention and will

do almost anything to get it. When they reach high school, they begin the process of

moving to an independence that does not revolve around us. Even though it is not easy,

it is what we prepare to do.

Looking at the pictures from the streets of Port-Au-Prince, I realize how blessed I

am. Even though my Christmas was different, I could still talk to my children on the

phone and through Skype. I knew that my children were safe and they were happy. As

a parent, we all want our children to nd success and happiness. The families whose

loved ones were lost in the devastation of the earthquake will never be able to talk to

one another again. For them, their lives will never be the same. The world that once

was lled with laughter and smiles is now transformed in a world of tears and pain.

The images that I cannot erase are the ones of parents singing in the streets thanking

God for what they had and asking for his help.

With Christmas a fading memory and the signs of spring just around the corner, I praythat we thank God for the gifts he has given to us. Even as life changes, we are so

fortunate to have our families even if we are not with them every day. Let us never

take for granted the time that we have with our children. They grow up so fast and it

is what we do with them today that will help them become men and women who can

make a difference in the lives of those they encounter each day.

Principals Desk ~ Mrs. Kathy Mahar

This years Teacher of the Year is .

Thank you to all of you who took the time to nominate an Archbishop

Spalding faculty member for Teacher of the Year. The time and thought

put into these nominations is appreciated more than you know. Thenominations are reviewed by a committee who then recommends a

    candidate to the principal.

I am incredibly proud to announce that the 2010 Teacher of the Year is

Melissa Hildt. Melissa joined the Archbishop Spalding faculty in the

fall of 2004 as a member of Operation Teach, a program offered by the

Archdiocese of Baltimore in partnership with the College of Notre Dame.

A candidate teaches full-time in an Archdiocesan school while earning a

Masters degree through the College of Notre Dame. We were fortunate

that Melissa chose to remain at Spalding once she completed the two year

program. Melissa earned a BA in Spanish with a minor in Mathematics

also from the College of Notre Dame. Although a member of the Math

Department, Melissa has also taught Spanish and Religious Studies while

at Spalding. Melissa lives the gospel values and epitomizes the best traits

of an educator: intelligent, organized, responsible, and compassionate. She is an outstanding role model for the Spalding community.

We created the Kathy Sanders Spirit of Spalding Award last year to honor

the memory of our beloved school nurse who died in the spring of 2008.

This recognition is awarded to a teacher who shares Mrs. Sanders love of

Archbishop Spalding High School; shares her dedication and support of

the students; and gives unselshly of their time and energy.

We are proud to announce that the 2010 recipient of this award is James

Christopher Phillips. Chris joined the Religious Studies department in

1995 and has taught almost every course in the department during his

tenure. Chris has always been completely devoted to the Spalding students

and has given unselshly of his time serving in whatever capacity has

been needed. Chris has been hospitalized since late fall, but he remains a

vital part of the Archbishop Spalding community always in our thoughts

    and prayers.

    Advanced Placement Exam Registration

Registration packets for Advanced Placement courses are mailed this

month. If, by February16, you have not received a registration packet

please call Carol Gordon at extension 270. Completed registration

forms must be received by my ofce by Tuesday, March 2, 2010.

Re-Registration New Courses for next year

It is time to register for next years classes. Please take time to review

your childs choices for course selections. During the registration process,

students are given a Course Catalogthat includes course descriptions and

pre-requisites. This serves as a reference for guiding the decision-making

process. We want our students to be challenged but not overwhelmed.

    Registering for Advanced Placement Courses

Advanced Placement (AP) courses are college-level courses that will

require many more hours of study and independent reading than other

courses. Students should carefully consider whether they will have the

time and energy to meet the challenges of an AP course these courses

can be demanding, especially in a high school students schedule.

We encourage students to challenge themselves academically while

maintaining a balanced schedule that allows them to succeed. Students

may not drop an Advanced Placement course.

Outlined below is a timeline for registration. Keep in mind that the Social

Studies Department and English Department require writing samples to

be considered for an Advanced Placement course.

Student Affairs ~ Ms. Kaycie S. Lomax

The beginning of the second semester is a fresh start for students with both

academics and discipline. At the start of the new semester, students are

given a clean slate that is free from any disciplinary infractions that were

accumulated during the rst semester. As the new semester begins, there

    are a few reminders:

Students are expected to be in proper uniform during the

    school day.

o In the event that a student forgets an item of their

proper uniform, they must report to an Assistant

Principal, Student Affairs to obtain a uniform excuse.

Students are allowed two uniform excuses; after two

uniform excuses students will be issued a demerit.

Shirts must be properly buttoned and tucked in at all times.

The appropriate shoes must be worn daily.

Facial piercings and/or nose jewelry may not be worn or

    covered with band-aids.

Girls: Skorts must be worn no more than three inches above

the knee and may not be rolled at the waist.

Boys: Hair length must be above the collar and off the face.

The uniform requirements are not limited to the reminders mentioned

above. For more information, please see the Student Handbook: p. 19-20.

Athletics ~ Mr. Lee R. DoveAthletics An Individual Perspective

On the rst day of tryouts coach told us that hard work and dedication

would be essential to making the team. We were told that hustle and

focus would pay off. We were asked to do some soul searching over howimportant team membership really was to us. This was day one! A gut

check! A mental exercise, used to see if we were really ready to accept the

things that were going to be asked of us in the months ahead.

Next came the clichs. All of the good coaches use them; No pain

no gain. Theres no I in Team. There is no Me in We. We are

family here, we were told. Good things come to those who work hard.

I am sure you have heard these expressions. Whether or not they provide

enough motivation for us to achieve success remains to be seen. Tryouts

    end tomorrow.

With the evaluation process over the inevitable results are yet to come.

Roster selection surely has to be one of the hardest decision in all of sports.

The elation of making the team! The misery of not making it! I am sure

that coaches do not relish the task of breaking someones spirit, but theymust also know that disappointment builds character and determination.

That life will not always present itself exactly as we may hope. That these

are important hurdles that we as high school student athletes must learn to

endure. Why else would a coach place our name on the cut list?

However, to those of us who survive, membership has its privileges. Daily

practices. Team meetings. Weekend and holiday team commitments. Game

schedules. Hungry afternoons and tired nights. Praise and criticism, and

not necessarily in that order. Time and effort often without reward. Tough

losses. Homework yet to be done. Welcome to my life. The privileged

life of a high school athlete.

Yet through it all comes friendships and life lessons. A true understanding

of what the word teamwork really means. The realization that to be trulysuccessful as an athlete, it really is about the We and not Me state of

mind. That it is the team and not I that make things happen. And, that

Our success is dependent upon the sum total of everyones efforts,

    together. Not just individual accomplishments.

To be a high school athlete is perhaps one of the hardest assignments I

will ever love. I know it will come and go all too fast. And I know the

opportunity beyond the high school level is reserved for only a fortunate

few. Even though the accolades are sometimes far and few between and

the rewards often remiss or absent, it matters not. Because for me it will

be the memories. that will last a lifetime!

    ASHS Field Hockey Gives Back

The Archbishop Spalding Field Hockey Team have been donating their

time and talent to the community. Recently the Varsity team spent an

evening at Sarahs House preparing and serving dinner to families in

transition. The team organized and spent the evening with the many

young children making various Christmas crafts and jewelry. The familiesand team enjoyed getting to know each other and sharing some special

holiday memories. Giving back to the community is not new to Spalding

Field Hockey. Led by Coach Leslee Brady the team has a strong history of

giving back. During the past couple of years the team has raised funds for

breast cancer research. This year the Spalding Field Hockey team raised

$500 to donate to the Susan Komen Foundation. The team dressed in pink

and decorated the eld with balloons and owers. This years fund raiser

was a special day for the seniors as they celebrated their Senior game

helping out others. The team has also been involved in raising money and

prom gowns for the Gowns for Giving program and funds for Habitat for

the Humanity. The efforts of the ASHS Field Hockey team giving back to

the community will carry forward as a true Spalding tradition for years

    to come.

From the Music DepartmentThe Music Department is happy to report the outstanding achievements

of several Spalding musicians. Students from the various ensembles

auditioned in November for Marylands All State Band and Chorus.

Sarah Haines was selected for the Junior All State Band, while Briony

Scholtz and Henry Van Engen were selected for the Senior All State

Band. Maggie Dozier and Erin Dustin were selected for All State

Orchestra, while Kevin Shields was awarded membership in the

Senior All State Jazz Band. Great success was achieved from the vocal

students as well. Members selected to the Senior All State Chorus

include Megan Dustin, Amelia Liberati, McKenna Reeher, Kathryn

Scheidt, Jessica Wetterau, and Samantha Wicklund. Congratulations

to these talented students and all musicians who auditioned.

These gifted musicians along with other talented members of the

Spalding community will perform at the Variety Show on February

12 and the annual Spring Concert on April 29-30, 2010. All shows

begin at 7 pm. The music department would like to invite the entire

school community to come enjoy these wonderful evenings of

    listening pleasure.

    Financial Aid Applications

Seniors and their parents are urged to le their FAFSA and PROFILE

forms immediately if they have not already been submitted. Some private

colleges require the PROFILE form; the registration materials for the

    PROFILE are available at www.collegeboard.com.

All colleges, both public and private, require the FAFSA form.

FAFSA worksheets and forms are available online. The worksheet

can be used to help prepare the application or as a guide so that parents

know what information they need to have available when using the online

application. Also, when submitting the FAFSA form, it requires that you

input a list of the colleges, by their Federal School Code, that need to

receive this information. These codes are available at www.fafsa.ed.gov

along with the FAFSA and the PIN information. Keep track of the pin

number so the status of the application can be checked.

It can take several weeks for the FAFSA forms to be processed before

they are sent to specic colleges. Do not miss out on aid or on state

scholarships by submitting forms too late.

For questions or help when lling out the FAFSA form or information

on whether your form has been processed, access them on the web

    at www.federalstudentaid.ed.gov or call 1-800-433-3243 between 8:00

am and midnight on weekdays and from 9:00 am until 6:00 pm on

    Saturdays.

    Maryland State Scholarship Administration

The State Scholarship Administration is an important source of dollars for

students who attend college within the state. These dollars are to be used

at any in-state school, public or private. Phone the commission at 410-

260-4565 weekdays from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm to get an application packet

and information about the various programs. The website also contains

program descriptions and other pertinent information; the address is

www.mhec.state.md.us. Check this out carefully because many of theMaryland Scholarship programs require the FAFSA form.

    Scholarships for Scholars

Announcements for this program have been made several times a week

since the week of Jan. 4th. This program offers awards in a variety of

subject areas and in service. The monies can only be used in schools in

Maryland. The applications are due in the Guidance Ofce by February

    9, 2010.

    College Responses

All seniors should let the Guidance counselors know of college decisions

as students receive this news. Email is a great way to relay this information.

Also, when scholarships are awarded, please bring a photocopy of the

letter to the Guidance ofce as soon as possible.

    Deciencies Mailed

On February 22, 2010, third quarter deciencies will be mailed. It is

necessary to take special note of these warning grades, as they are the rst

    Cavalier ClubGot Mulch?

The Cavalier Club was extremely busy in January! The Cavalier Club

helped the Archbishop Spalding Wresting Team host the Cavalier Duals.

Archbishop Spalding held the two day tournament in both gyms. Each daythe gyms were lled with over 800 people! On January 23rd the Cavalier

Club hosted the rst Bull Roast held at the school in over ve years. This

winter the cheerleading team hosted their rst ever Spalding Invitational

Tournament. The Spalding Cavalier Club has been busy this year with the

most ambitious endeavor kicking off through the late winter/early spring.

The Cavalier Club is kicking off a major Mulch Sale. The Mulch sale

will start off the last week of January and will continue through February

with a nal sales deadline for orders of March 8th. The basic concept for

this drive is that for each bag of mulch a student athlete sells, one dollar

will go toward that students sports team or designated club. We have

reserved 50,000 bags of mulch so we are looking for a strong commitment

from the students, coaches and parents to achieve our goal. We will start

receiving truck loads of mulch at the school on March 11 th and deliveries

of the mulch will start on Saturday March 13th and continue until all thebags have been delivered. Our goal is to infuse in excess of $50,000 to

the different athletic teams budgets. We have invited all the teams and

coaches to participate. Weekly prizes will be awarded to top sellers.

Thank you to the Spalding community for your support and active

involvement in these events. We could not do it without you! Please help

us exceed our goal of 50,000 bags!

experiences that our students have shared

People started coming through the line, and I was one of the helpers to

ask them Bagels or Bread? because that day the people in need got to

    choose what they wanted.

In the book of John, Jesus humbles himself by kneeling down and

washing the feet of His disciples. This has always astonished me. Why

would Jesus be washing someone elses feet? I have come to realize that

he was leading by example. He has called each of us to wash each others

feet by humbling ourselves to serve others. I did not think of the service

hour requirement as a burden, I enjoyed it, and sometimes I think I got

more out of the helping than the people I served did.

Besides all of these friendships and other relationships that I have learned

in my time at Spalding have come from my community service activities. I

learned that the poor are no different than me they have simply run into

a few more hardships in the course of their lives than I have, and they are

slowly but surely recovering with the help of kind hearted individuals.

I was never aware of just how fortunate I am until I saw how life could

be if I was just born in a different area or to a different family. It is not fair

what people have to deal with; they are caught in a cycle of poverty that

they cannot escape from because of limitations already set out for them.

Seeing their struggle and their hope and kindness in the face of adversity

has made me a better person, because now I can never take what I have

for granted and I am committed to helping those in similar situations.

Working with kids has made me grow up and mature. Things I used to

do I dont do anymore, because I know that the kids are looking up to me

now. I refuse to let them down.

Ive come to realize that I can help people that I didnt think Id be able

to relate to. At rst, my friends and I were nervous about being able to

communicate with the people at the center. After a while, our worries no

longer mattered. We were able to tear down the language barrier with

smiles and laughs. Esperanza in Spanish means hope. We were giving

the people hope and love just by what we were teaching them.

The thing that has stuck with me each time was no matter what the

disability [the children had], once they were on that horse, they were notdisabled, and they were just a rider on a horse. Some of the children, who

could barely walk, mounted the horse and away they went. They had no

disability for that moment in time.

Through both [service] experiences, I was able to feel Gods presence

working through me and the people around me. I had the unique experience

of interacting with individuals outside of my comfort zone and meeting

people that I most likely would never have before. Also, I was better able

to appreciate the gifts that I have been blessed with and know that they

should not be taken for granted. The service work taught me more about

myself and allowed me to better understand myself. On the trip, I had

a unique feeling that God wanted me to continue to serve him through

mission work and become a leader for those in my community.

I feel like service has changed me for the better. It has made me rethinkhow I see and view the world, particularly my community, and the people

in it. I think service will always be a part of my life.

    Multitasking: A Harmful Myth

By Justin Hibbard, Education Technology Specialist

Texting while driving,Facebookingwhile doing homework, watching TV

while studying, we are a multitasking society. Not only has it become an

art, but in many cases, it is a job requirement, as we are expected to juggle

a multitude of tasks at any given moment. But studies are revealing that

not only are we unable to multitask, but we could be harming our brain by

    attempting to do so.

New research has come out this year about the effectiveness of

multitasking. Unfortunately, we, as a society, arent as productive as we

thought we were. While we can work on many tasks at once, the reality

is that we arent being nearly productive as if we focused on one task at

a time. The reason for this is due to our executive processing limitations

controlled by the frontal lobe of our brains. One of the elements of our

brains that make us so different than animals is our ability to tune out

irrelevant information. This process allows us to focus on the TV while

ignoring the voices of our children playing nearby. However, when we

hear the baby crying, our executive function will suddenly switch to tune

out the TV and focus on the child that needs our attention. What thismeans is that our brains are only capable of doing one executive task, and

every other task at the moment gets de-prioritized. Daniel Weissman, a

neuroscientist at the University of Michigan studying the brains ability

to multitask, gives this example, If Im out on a street corner and Im

looking for one friend whos wearing a red scarf, I might be able to pick

out that friend. But if Im looking for a friend whos wearing a red scarf

on one street corner, and in the middle of the street Im looking for another

friend whos wearing a blue scarf and on the other side of the street

Im looking for a friend wearing a green scarf at some point, I can only

divide my attention so much, and I begin to have trouble. This is why

cell phones and texting while driving continues to be prohibited among

States. If our executive function is texting, then our ability to drive is not

the priority at the moment, and that could quickly become a recipe for

disaster. Earl Miller, a professor of neuroscience at MIT, says, Switching

from task to task, you think youre actually paying attention to everything

around you at the same time. But youre actually not. Youre not paying

attention to one or two things simultaneously, but switching between

them very rapidly (Hamilton, John. Think Youre Multitasking? Think

    Again. NPR.com).

Multitasking not only impairs our ability to comprehensively accomplish

tasks at the moment, but it also has negative long-term implications. A

Stanford University study showed that heavy media multitaskers have

slower response time most likely due to being distracted by irrelevant

information that they store in their short-term memory. Dr. Gary Aston-

Jones at the Medical University of South Carolina explains, There

are some possibly frightening implications of the study. If its not very

reversible, then the way the culture has become might be pushing us all

to become more and more distractible and less and less able to focus oversustained periods of time (Tamkins, Theresa. Drop that Blackberry!

    Multitasking May be Harmful. CNN.com).

This is troubling news for todays student immersed in a multitasking

culture. Not only does this mean that the multitasking student is unable

to focus on writing a paper while texting and checking Facebook, but

their multitasking practices could be training their mind to rapidly switch

functions quickly, thus leading to an inability to pay attention to one task

for a prolonged period of time. Though there remains much research to

be completed, Dr. Aston-Jones does make it clear that multitasking cannot

lead to a genetic onset of ADHD. However, because multitasking does

cause long-term problems, students could develop similar symptoms as

those who do have ADHD, specically an inability to pay attention for

longer periods and needing extended time to complete tasks. The bottom

line is that multi-sensory overload often called multitasking could

actually be brain training that could cause a child to tune out the important

material his teacher is presenting and focus on the red car thats pulling

into the parking lot on the other side of the window.

    Chalk it up to Experience

    Graphic Imaging Class

By: Debra SolaWalk into a Graphic Imaging class and it is easy to see how students enjoy

creating graphic representations of famous works of art, designing their

own products of the future, and even drawing a Hot-Rod design. Students

become well versed in the use of AutoCAD and Adobe software and learn

about how designs are created, color theory and photo manipulation.

A favorite project in class is the recreation of a souped-up Hot-Rod car in

AutoCAD. Class participant Devin Conway especially liked this project.

Devin said, We were able to gure it out on our own rather than from

steps. I hope to have a future in engineering or architecture.

Art students also nd a home in Graphic Imaging class. Senior Brianna

Eller explained, I liked drawing in Adobe and Photoshop. The color

theory lessons showed us how we can change colors by measuring values,

and blending. Also, the ability to cut out objects from within photos was

    fun.

Whether recreating Bauhaus design, Schiele artwork or designing Koi

Ponds, Graphic Imaging class provides students with real-world

experience on the industries latest software offerings.
