What’s Wrong With Living Together

Before Marriage? By Pastor Dan Olson

Today it’s almost assumed that people will live together before they get married. I knew a couple who was going to get married and they said that their friends were shocked when they found out 1) that they were not living to-gether yet, and even more so, 2) that they hadn’t even had sex yet. Oddly enough, our culture has completely turned the blame

around on those who don’t approve of such a lifestyle. Our church, as well as anyone who speaks against this, is called “old-fashioned,” “out of touch,” and judgmental.” So we are left with the question, is this just a “church rule” or is this “God’s rule”? Does God speak against this or not? First, look at what God is against. (Please look up these passages on your own.) Pastor Shane Krause and family

Shane Krause was born on December 23, 1981, in Appleton, Wisconsin, to Dale and Marsha Krause. He grew up in rural New London, Wisconsin. He has one younger brother, Brett, who serves as a pastor at Zion Lutheran Church in Lakewood, Colorado. Shane grew up as a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church, New London, where he also attended grade school. He attended Fox Valley Lutheran High School in Appleton, Wisconsin. He is a 2005 graduate of Martin Luther Col-lege in New Ulm, Minnesota, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in pre-seminary studies. He then attended Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in Mequon, Wisconsin. Shane spent his third year of seminary training as a vicar at Grace Lutheran Church, Cypress Springs Village, Texas. He graduated from Wis-consin Lutheran Seminary in May 2009 as a Master of Divinity.

Pastor Krause was assigned to serve Faith Lutheran Church and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Lancaster and Platteville, Wisconsin, as well as the WELS Campus Ministry at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. He was ordained at St. Paul’s on August 2, 2009, and served there until May 2014, when he accepted a Call to serve at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Overland Park, Kansas. Since 2016 Pastor Krause was also privileged to serve on the Nebraska District Mission, and as chairman of that District Mission Board and on the WELS Board for Home Missions for the last two and a half years. Shane’s wife Nicole (nee Sternhagen) was born on March 29, 1982 in Appleton, Wisconsin, to Craig and Julie Sternhagen. She grew up in Appleton with her mom and dad and her younger brother, Zach. Nicole attended St. Matthew Lutheran Church and School in Appleton. Shane met Nicole while they attended Fox Valley Lutheran High School. Shane and Nicole dated through-out high school and college. Nicole also attended Martin Luther College, where she obtained a degree in elementary education. Shane and Nicole were married on June 5, 2004. The Lord has blessed their mar-riage with three children, Eli (born June 11, 2006), Marlie (born April 15, 2008), and Carsyn (born Novem-ber 12, 2009). Shane and Nicole consider parenting to be one of the greatest earthly gifts the Lord has giv-en to them. The Krause’s enjoy sports and the outdoors. Shane and Nicole spend much of their free time at their chil-dren’s sporting events. They consider camping, hiking, and skiing to be among their favorite activities. Shane also enjoys hunting and fishing. Pastor Krause is thankful for the opportunity to serve at St. Paul’s and looks forward to serving the people of St. Paul’s with the gospel of Jesus Christ. The Krause’s are glad to be members of St. Paul’s and are excited to become members of the community. They ask that you continue to keep them in your prayers. They are confident that the Lord will bless the ministry of St. Paul’s according to his good and holy will.

also, because he loves us, and he knows that our lives will be better if we follow his design for marriage, rather than the world’s design. In a world of sin, Christians should take any advantage that they can in having a peaceful life. Abstinence before marriage and living separately before marriage is one such advantage. Genesis 2:18-25 talks about how marriage is between one man and one woman and the mystery of becoming one flesh. In marriage two individuals are so united in the bonds of marriage that God doesn’t even consider them individuals anymore – but one. There is no other relationship on earth like that. Friends, married or not, we have all failed in trying to live according to God’s design. Know that you are forgiven be-cause of a gracious God, but let’s not live in it any longer (Romans 6:1-2). If you know a fellow Christian who is living with their boyfriend or girlfriend, talk with them out of love and show them the beautiful design that God freely gives to us. We can show the world that we are different and we pray that God gives us the opportunity to tell them why.

Bible Classes — What’s Your Plan?

Sunday Morning Adult Bible Study Sundays 9:30-10:15 am

Creation Apologetics (Five Weeks) Starts Sunday, September 8. How do we respond to the growing belief in evolution? How do we continue to uphold a biblical stance on a 6 day/24 hour creation when it seems that we are in the minority? Through this Bible study we are going to equip the people of St. Paul's with the answers to "Did God use evolution to create? What about millions of years/carbon dating/natural selection/fossils?" The Book of Jonah (Five Weeks) Starts Sunday, September 8. When people think of Jonah from the Bible, they usually think of him being swallowed by a giant fish. As amazing as that event was, there’s a bunch of other great lessons in the life of Jonah and the amazing grace the Lord shows to Jonah and the people he’s sent to. This Bible study will fit well with our September sermon series and will be great way to build on what we’ll learn and apply in our Sunday morning worship services. Nursery, Sunday School, Young Teen, and Teen Bible Class Options St. Paul’s provides a variety of options for kids on Sunday mornings so that families can come together each week, study God’s Word, and apply it to our lives of our faith. New classes start on Sun., Sept. 8. Below are the different classes: † Nursery: Parents can drop their kids three and

younger at the nursery next to church during Bible hour

† Sunday School is split by different grade and age levels ranging from pre-K-6th grade. Each class will meet in a different school classroom at 9:20 am

† 7th Grade “Knowing Christ” & 8th Grade “Sharing Christ” 7th graders and their parents and 8th graders and their parents will meet at 9:30 am for classes designed to supplement confirmation class and create opportunities for parents/children to talk about their faith.

† Teen Bible Class The Teen Bible Class will meet in the Teen Room right by the gym at 9:30 am. These classes are designed to help our teens think about living their faith and why God’s Word matters to their lives.

Women’s Group Come for a study of the letter to the Galatians and how Jesus alone gives us true freedom to be his forgiven children and heirs of eternal life. All women are welcome. Presenter: Karen Murry Sunday 9:30 a.m. Faculty Lounge.

Weekdays Monday’s Women’s Group: Please join us for our study of II Samuel, as we learn how God worked through David--saint and sinner--to further his plan of salvation. Facilitator, Wendy Schibbelhut (Fireside Room) 4:00 p.m. Tuesday Morning Women's Bible Study: Facilitator, Lois Jenson (Redemption Bookstore in Center 90) 9:00 a.m. This class will start a new study on 1 Peter, and how we can be Christian encouragers and witnesses to those around us. Wednesday Bible Class 9:00-10:00 am Starts Sept 11. Pastor Olson will teach the first five weeks of the Wednesday Bible Class and will use his creation apologetics class he’s teaching on Sunday mornings. After creation apologetics, Pastor Ehlke will teach his Sunday morning Bible Class on the End Times starting October 16. Wednesdays Women’s Bible Class at 2:00 pm Fireside Room (Church Entryway), Facilitator, Amy Bryant. This class will start a new study on the 12 apostles and how God used and uses broken, imperfect people to be instruments of his grace. All women are invited to this study, and it makes a perfect opportunity for moms who will be picking up their students from school at the end of the day. Thursday Women’s Bible Class at 6:15 am Fireside Room (Church Entryway), Facilitator, Jan Westerman. We are studying the book of Hosea. In depth study of Israel's (our) Unfaithfulness. The Lord's Faithfulness. Please join us. We meet all year long, if you cannot come each week, you are welcome to join anytime you can Fridays Moms at the Cross at 8:30 am Fireside Room (Church Entryway), Facilitator, Karen Murry. This class meets every 1st and 3rd Friday of each month. We’ll continue our study of Colossians and the encouragement the Lord gives us through this letter written by Paul. Saturday Men’s Bible Class Kwik Trip (408 Sand Lake Rd), Facilitator, Steve Loehr. Our men’s Bible study will continue in the Fall studying our favorite Psalms. The book of Psalms is a wonderful hymnbook of the Bible that provides Christians with reminders of the Lord’s faithfulness and promises despite our sin and the storms we face in this life. Class will meet at the Training Center portion of the Kwik Trip building.

Thank You

Dear Members of St. Paul’s Our family wishes to extend to you a huge thank you for the warm welcome which you provided for us upon our arrival at St. Paul’s. From the help we received with our move to the overwhelming reception at the installation services to the many greeting cards and gift cards, you have shown to us wonderful hospitality. We already feel very at home here. May the Lord bless and keep you always! In Christ, The Krause Family-Pastor Shane, Nicole, Eli, Marlie, and Carsyn

******************************************** Dear Friends at St. Paul Lutheran Church “Mercy” is a special word in the Bible. Our Lord loves to

show mercy. He desires us to be merciful. In a world where people look down on those who need help, Jesus teaches us to share the mercy he has shown us. In Spe-cial Ministries, we call this “love in action.” Thank you for your “love in action.” Your gift of $450 was received on July 15, 2019 and directed to WELS-SM-Prison Ministry Fund as requested.

******************************************** May God continue to fill our hearts with compassion, and may the Lord have mercy on all of us as we look to Christ for eternal life and salvation! In our merciful Savior’s name, Rev. Jim Behringer, Director, Special Ministries

WELCOME HOME SUNDAY: OCTOBER 6

WHOM WILL YOU REACH?

It happens for a variety of reasons. Christians stop going to church. Do you know one of the reasons people cite for not coming back to church? Fear. They are afraid they are going to be judged or someone is going to make a joke about their being gone. Welcome Home Sunday (Oct 6) is

intended to be a celebration of the blessing of Christian commu-nity our God gives to us. He intends his church to be just like a home: a safe place where we can live without fear. He intends believers to love and treat one another as kin. Our goal is to have 100% of our members in attendance on that Sunday. Thus, it is the perfect Sunday for someone who has been away from church for a while to come back. Do you know someone like that? Maybe it’s a sister or a son or a friend. They used to come, but for whatever reason, stopped. Reach out to them. Offer to pick them up on that day. If they are afraid, assure them that is unnecessary. We are all sinners. We are all redeemed. And we are all family. On that day, everyone receives a warm “Welcome home!”

Other Worship Opportunities

If you know that you’ll be out of town for the weekend, vacationing or

working, look ahead to one of the many area worship services. It may

not seem like “home,” but it is better than going a week without hear-

ing God speak to you.

You can also either watch the video of the entire worship service or

the audio of the sermon by going to our website

www.stpaulsonalaska.org. Then, click on "gather." There are always

printed copies of sermons available in the lobby. If you are out of

town and want to locate the nearest WELS or ELS church, check

in our church lobby, call one of the pastors, call the church office or

go to www.wels.net and click on the WELS Locator icon. You can al-

so download the mobile app for your smart phones.

Those Preparing for Ministry

Remember to support St. Paul’s two student assistance funds we use to assist young men and women studying for the teaching and preaching ministry. The Student Support – Ministerial fund (SSM) for men and women who are attending Martin Luther College to prepare to be teachers or pastors needs about $3,000-4,000 each year. The Student Support – Pastoral fund (SSP) for men who are training at the seminary to be pastors needs about $700-1,400 each year.

School News

If you walked up to a random American, showed them a Bible, and asked them what they thought of it, what kind of responses do you think you would get? Certainly you would find some who responded that the Holy Bible is the very Word of God. Others might call it nonsense. Some might say the Bible is a timeless book, while others might label it antiquated. Our theme this school year – God said it…I believe it! – is designed to help students stand firm in their faith about the Bible. Throughout the school year, chapel devotions will help students become more familiar with the Bible and prepare them to battle temp-tations to view the Bible as anything less than God’s love letter to His children. The Bible is a book we treasure, read often, and are confident to defend in an increasingly secularized world. RECORD ENROLLMENT! St. Paul’s Lutheran School begins the 2019-2020 school year with more students than we have ever had! We have a total of 55 new students in 3K-8th grade. Of those 55 new students, 24 are in K-8th grade. Eighteen of those 24 are WELS, and at least 3 are strong prospects. God is indeed rich-ly blessing our school with the opportunity to partner with parents to train children in the Word of God and give us the opportunity to reach out with the Gospel to those who do not know Je-sus. To Him be the glory! STAFFING There are a few additions and changes to our staffing for 2019-2020. Mrs. Wendy Schibbelhut will be serving as our Wor-ship Coordinator for St. Paul’s, so her teaching time has been reduced for her to fill this new role. Mrs. Kathryn Olson will be teaching eighth grade in the afternoon. To provide some release time for our Athletic Director and coaches, Mrs. Lori Ehlke will be teaching art classes for grades 5, 6, & 7 this school year. Increased enrollment, as well as one person stepping away, has led to three new Educa-tional Assistants at St. Paul’s. We welcome Aarica Stallman, Emily Leistekow, and Holly Sloan to support our students and teachers in preschool and second grade classrooms. PRESCHOOL ACCREDITATION Now that our K-8 program has completed a self-study and been grant-ed Exemplary Accreditation, we are working to add our preschool program to our accreditation. Our pre-school teachers have been working to prepare evidence for the additional standards necessary to have our preschool accredited as well. Mr. Tom Plitzuweit of the Commission on Lutheran Schools will visit our school on September 23 to review our preschool program and make a recommendation about our ac-creditation. ATHLETICS The athletic schedule for the La Crosse Area Lutheran School Athletic Conference will con-tinue for at least one more year with the new schedule. Fall sports this year will again include cross country, volleyball, and flag football. Circuit training will also be available for those interested. Cross country runners will have three meets: 9/12, 9/25, and 10/7. Volleyball players will have three

PAUL’S St. Paul’s will be offering a new after-school activity this year – robotics. A grant has helped fund the start-up costs. St. Paul’s will have two teams of seventh and eighth graders that will compete in about two tournaments of the VEX IQ Challenge. The format of the tournaments are similar to what Luther High School’s igKnightion team experiences. You can watch an informational vid-eo at this link. The season begins September 3 and may run through February 2020. SOUP LABELS - BOX TOPS Please continue to save and turn in your Campbell’s Bonus Points and General Mills box tops regularly. All of these programs help us to get items that we are unable to put into our regular budget. They can all be redeemed throughout the year. WE LOVE OUR VOLUNTEERS We are so very grateful for the many volunteers who help our school function. Especially, I would like to thank all who help serving lunch and volunteer to assist in our class-rooms regularly. You are a great blessing!

Luther High School News

The theme for the 2019-2020 school year is “Serve The Lord.” The supporting passage is Psalm 100:2

First Annual Noble Knight Banquet Save the Date! October 19th – The first annual “Noble Knight Banquet” will be held at the Radisson in La Crosse. This event will focus on reducing the balance of the loan to minimize the amount of the mortgage in June of 2020. Please watch for information to secure your seat at this most important and fun evening. Become a Noble Knight!

Finish the Work – Update Your Luther High School will be welcoming 254 students for the 2019/2020 school year. What a blessing to have the building project completed! The expanded and updated facility al-lows for expanded curriculum and a safe learning environment for students and staff. As everyone prepares for the start of another school year it is also time to refocus on “Finishing the Work.” A call to action to reduce the principle balance of the construction interest only loans. This past year we have been able to pay the in-terest from pledges received and new gifts and we are thankful for the ability to do that, but we are not mak-ing any progress on reducing the current balance. Below are the numbers as of July 29, 2019: The total bal-ance of the two construction loans: $4,768,561. Monthly Interest paid on loans: $15,000. Cash on Hand: $196,583. Pledges to be received: $255,619. Interest only loan being converted to a mortgage June of 2020. The FTW Capital Campaign Committee encourages you to prayerfully consider a gift or a monthly pledged amount. Please join the many who have chosen to give a monthly gift. With many supporting the debt reduc-tion cause, it will collectively make a significant impact on the ability to reduce the principle balance of the loans. Gifts and or pledges can be dropped off or mailed to the school or online at the Luther High School website. The cost of the building project is being paid for by gifts to the FTW Capital Campaign. It is our goal and commitment that the building project be paid for by your gifts and not impact the operating budget of the school or tuition. We need your support to accomplish this. Feel free to call for us with any questions or set up a time to meet and tour the school. Greg Scriver - FTW Co-Chair– 414-236-6259 Mitch Schultz - FTW Co-Chair – 608-738-6427 John Byus – Luther High Mission Advancement - 608-769-0396 Thank you to all who have supported the building project and for your continued prayers and support to Finish the Work! God’s continued blessings to you and your Luther High School!
