Sensory Resources

New multisensory resource boxes are now available to borrow whilst visiting the Cathedral.

Our resource boxes are designed to enrich a visit by offering suggested routes supported by specially selected items in the box. Visitors are encouraged to touch, smell, listen and look to enable multisensory and methods of engagement with the space and its incredible stories.

We also have a selection of individual items to borrow that may assist a visit if you or someone you are visiting with, has sensory sensitivities. These include ear defenders, tactile aids (such as a holding cross, wax battery operated candle or colour ribbon), binoculars and colouring sheets.

Choose to use the box as you self-guide round the Cathedral or speak to our visits team to book a sensory trained guide to lead you on a short tour.

She will challenge us to do the same this Lent, asking ourselves foundational questions about what it means both to be human and to be a follower of Jesus.

Saturday 1 February 1.00pmTaborers Society Informal ConcertThe Wonders of the Pipe and Tabor

Members of the Taborers Society will give a short concert featuring the pipe and tabor, playing a range of music from the Mediaeval and Tudor periods. This will include an ancient carol from ca. 1280 composed in Gloucester at Llanthony Secunda Priory “Edi beo thu, hevene quene”.

The pipe and tabor are two instruments played simultaneously by one musician {called a taborer}. This is possible because the pipe only has three finger holes, so can be played with one hand while the other hand beats the rhythm on a drum called a tabor. This combination has been around for centuries. A swan-bone three-hole pipe has been found at Avebury, dating from 2000BC, and Gloucester Cathedral has two carvings of taborers dating from ca 1350 – one high up in the roof with other minstrel carvings and another very fine statue above a sedilla in the presbytery.

The choir has raised large sums for a wide variety of local and national charities and community groups. The concert today in the Cathedral is given in aid of the James Hopkins Trust. Saturday 25 April 7.00pmStroud Fringe Choir Performance for Earth Day 2020Lady Chapel

Marking the 50th anniversary of Earth Day on 22 April and the Global Earth Day Network, a specially designed programme will be performed by the Stroud Fringe Choir for the beautiful acoustics of the Cathedral’s Lady Chapel. This one of a kind concert will create a restorative atmosphere for reflection in the light of the climate crisis.

The repertoire will include a world premiere of a set of specially written choral pieces by composer Emily Hall with lyrics by Toby Litt and other songs written by Stroud musicians including Emily Barker and Blythe Pepino, Melanie Golding and Sophie Sterckx. Stroud Fringe Choir is a choir collective made up of composers, singer-songwriters, artists and high - standard adventurous amateurs.

But what of their darker side, those mysterious powers with chilling consequences for mortals who err in some way or who are just in the wrong place at the wrong time? Religious beliefs embraced the ‘personality’ gods who figure in ancient literature and art, like Jupiter, Mars and Venus, and also all kinds of less visible spirits.

This course will follow stories and accounts from ancient authors (in translation). You may hear a little Latin too, but knowledge of Latin is not essential.

Gloucester Choral Society, as part of its 175th Anniversary celebrations, is running a Thomas Tallis Day to mark the 450th Anniversary of the composition of “Spem in Alium”.

There will be four learning sessions in various parts of Gloucester Cathedral in the morning, followed by a mass rehearsal in the Nave in the afternoon.

Following the afternoon rehearsal, at 4.30pm, there will be a public performance of the work in the Nave at which there will be a retiring collection in aid of the GCS Young Singers fund.

Monday 27 April to Saturday 30 MayGod’s Scribe Exhibition: Enoch the Heavenly WandererSouth TranseptThe exhibition ‘Enoch the Heavenly Wanderer’ focuses on the first section of the 1 Enoch (Chapters 1-36, out of 108) that was written in about 300 BC. Artist and academic Angus Pryor, following research conducted with fellow academic Philip Esler in the University of Gloucestershire in Cheltenham and in Ethiopia, has painted twelve large paintings that feature important scenes from this extraordinary narrative and has also had constructed a large-scale model of an Ethiopian church illuminated with Enochic scenes and Ethiopian imagery.

How to find usThe Cathedral is located in the historic heart of Gloucester and our spectacular tower can be seen from many spots in and around the city.

Arriving by Public TransportThe Cathedral is located in Gloucester Town Centre and is located within easy reach of the main railway and bus station. It is a 10-15 minute steady walk. Look out for Finger sign posts that will point you in the right direction.

Parking Parking in the Cathedral Close is restricted to pass holders only. There are eight disabled parking spaces which are for use by Blue Badge holders on a first come first served basis.
