Handwriting versus Writing

Handwriting is about writing letters properly while writing is about conveying an idea. At first, your learners will communicate through pictures, then pictures and writing. The stages of writing begin at drawing, then shift to scribbling and mock letters, letters that match sounds heard in words, and finally actual words and sentences.

At CCA, kindergarten teachers teach “Kid Writing” which is a systematic approach to developing writing skills. Lessons in edio will show a model of a complete sentence in writing instruction, yet it is expected that your learners may not be able to write a complete sentence yet. Your learners may draw a picture and some lines or letters that represent words.

As more letters and sounds are introduced, your learners will begin to use their knowledge of phonics to write more letters and eventually produce words.

Phonics versus Handwriting

The order in which letters are introduced in phonics and handwriting differs. In phonics, it is about the importance of letter sounds in relation to decoding words. For handwriting, it is about the skill of creating lines, from simple to complex, to form letters.

Because order in which these letters are taught differs in these areas of instruction, your learners have multiple opportunities to revisit and review what they know about each letter. Kindergarteners need consistent exposure to letters throughout the year.

Phonemic Awareness: identifying and manipulating sounds in spoken words

Phonics: matching letters to sounds

Decoding: applying knowledge of letters and sounds to segment (break apart a word into its sounds) and blend to form words

Your English Language Arts K Course!

English Language Arts is designed using the core language arts program Pearson ReadyGEN©, and is curated with additional engaging digital and print resources to support all learners on their path to college and career readiness. Each unit in ELA is centered on authentic texts, and includes mini lessons and activities, that support learners’ daily reading and writing within a variety of genres, and across content areas. Each week, the language arts course is complimented by collaborative and interactive real-time sessions with the teacher and learners in live classroom sessions. Within each unit, learners will show what they have learned through selection tests and writing projects.

Key Elements of the ELA course:

● authentic trade books featuring exciting literary and informational texts● frequent discussions about the literature with your learner; these discussions are scripted and appear in

your learner’s lesson at point of use and play an important role in supporting your learner in reflecting and thinking deeply about the text

● vocabulary, foundational skills, and conventions mini-lessons to support learners’ growth in reading and writing

● video instruction on phonemic awareness, phonics, and high-frequency words● daily writing practice that is tied to the reading within the lesson ● choice in independent reading from multiple virtual libraries● special events in your course: an Author Study, Library Days, and Reset & Reflect Days!

Supporting Your Learners in Daily Writing

Reading and writing every day is an important component of ELA, and the act of daily reading and writing builds stamina over time. Daily writing is not expected to be perfect! In fact, over-correcting daily writing may prevent your learners from enjoying the writing process. Balance your feedback to your learners based on concepts taught within the lessons. For example, once capital letters are taught, a gentle reminder to capitalize can come next. If your learners have not learned how to use commas in a series yet, that is fine! You may introduce the concept to your learners if you wish, but it is not necessary to focus on it. Remember, that grammar, spelling, and punctuation will be learned over time slowly.

Building writing stamina and the expression of ideas are most important. Encourage your learners to write freely without correcting themselves, or correcting their work. Daily writing practice is not expected to be a “good”or“perfect” copy. Use writing practice to support learners in their self-expression and thinking about a topic.

Through the revising and editing processes built into the edio lessons, you will work with your learners at specific times to do more formal editing to create finished, polished work.

Reach out to your teacher frequently for support and feedback throughout the year to get the most from your ELA course.

Smarty AntsYour learners have access to the Smarty Ants digital resource to enhance and support reading instruction for all levels of reading proficiency. Each week your learners will have fun in Smarty Ants as they achieve reading success on their own personalized path. Learners are highly encouraged to complete 45 minutes of Smarty Ants practice each week.

Virtual LibrariesVirtual libraries within the Digital Resources page support your learners’ continuous reading practice with a variety of high quality fiction and nonfiction texts from various subscription platforms. These resources can be accessed at any time to support daily reading goals of at least 15 minutes.
