PUPILS STEALSHOW IN‘DASANAMANA’

Purandhara and Kanaka,the celebrated saint-singersof Karnataka were in focusin a programme got up by theBhavan’s Dr. D.Krishnamurthiand Smt. Shakuntalammamemorial school, Shivamogga.The programme aptly titled“Dasa Namana” recently

The substratum of theprogramme was the life andworks of the great disciplesof sage Vyasa Rayaru. Itcomprised two skits,a Harikatha and renderingof a few ragas.

The special feature of theprogramme was it was thestudents from standard I andIV who were involved in itsenactment, though theteachers stood by asfelicitators.

It indeed was anengrossing and educativeprogramme testifying to thebudding talent among theyoungsters. Overall, it wasan enjoyable fare in whichPruthvik Kashyap whorendered the Harikathastole the show.

The Bhavan is happy toassociate itself with thedisciples of Pandit RamaraoV. Naik to create an endowmentin honour to mark the centenaryof his birth.

Pandit Rama Rao V. Naikwas a legendary HindustaniClassical musician and guruof Bangalore, responsible forbringing Hindustani style toBangalore, a bastion ofCarnatic music. He groomedinnumerable disciples in theauthentic Agra-Atrauli style

in Bangalore, several of whomhave made name and fame theworld over.

Born in 1909 in a villagein Haveri District , Panditjistarted learning Carnatic musicat a young age. But he wasdeeply attracted to theHindustani style after listeningto the great Ustad Faiyaz Khan.So he decided to go to Barodaand learn the style from UstadAtta Hussain Khan and SwamiVallabhdas, both distinguisheddisciples of Ustad Faiyaz Khan.After mastering the aestheticnuances of the Agra-AtrauliGharana for 20 years hebecame a proficient vocalisthimself. Ustad Faiyaz Khanwas so much impressed by theauthentic singing of Panditjithat he himself often used toask Panditji to give vocalsupport in his concerts.

The salient features of thetwo classical systems of Indianmusic-the Hindustani andCarnatic, were highlightedin a demonstration by VidushiK. Gowri at the Bhavan onSunday, Jan 3. The programmewas for the NanjangudSrikantaiah and Janakammaendowment.

Tracing the history of Indianmusic to the 13th Century withAmir Khusro’s initiation,

Smt. Gowri explained how thetwo classical styles were evolved.

To illustrate her point, sheexplained the different aspectsof music like raga bhava (mood)tala (the beat), rhythm (pace)and the literary content in eachstyle. In her demonstration, shedisplayed the contrasts anddifferences in a lucid manner.

Almost right from itsinception, Sri Khariwal not onlyevinced keen interest in all itsactivities, but contributedliberally to ensure their success.The Khincha auditorium the hubof all its public activities is astanding testimony for hismunificence.

Born on Dec 27, 1927 in aremote village of Rajastan.Sri Khariwal had his earlyeducation there obtaining hisdegree in commerce from theBenaras Hindu University. Aftergraduation he joinedH.C. Khincha & Co., as an ArticleClerk, qualifying as CharteredAccountant in 1954. Since then

he carried on the profession ofChartered Accountancy with H.C.Khincha & Co. Sri Khariwal wasconnected with variouseducational, social, cultural andreligious organizations. He wasfounder member of Sri HindiSikshan Sangh / Sri Jain SikshaSamiti. Also, he was theChairman of Shree BhagawanMahaveer Jain Educational Trust,Bangalore which runs JainCollege and various otherinstitutions. For many years hewas member of ExecutiveCommittee and later as ViceChairman of Bharatiya VidyaBhavan, Bangalore Kendra.

Sri Khariwal was deeplyinterested in Jaina and Indianliterature and used to enjoyreading lots of religious andliterary books.
