Commenting on theeducational policy of the StateGovernment, the renownededucationaist came down heavilyon its ‘Nali Kali’ Project whichcan serve no purpose. Heparticularly questioned thejustification in applying it only toGovernment schools. Whyshould the students of the rural, private schools be deprived of itsbenefits, he asked.
Prof. Venkatasubbaiah wasalso sore that the focus ofeducation was seemingly on theurban students to the utter neglectof rural students. He stressed theneed for earnest efforts in thisdirection to see that rural studentsreceived the same standard ofeducation as that in urban parts.

The importance of the termAum and the pride of place itenjoys in Indian tradition wasexplained by Dr. S Ranganath, the well-known Sanskrit scholar,at the Bhavan on August 4, 2009.
Dr. Ranganath who is aProfessor in the Department ofSanskrit in the NMKRVWomen’s College, Jayanagar, was delivering the M SHanumantha Rao Memoriallecture under the auspices of theBhavan. The subject of his talkwas ‘The Significance of Aumin Indian Tradition’.
Drawing copiously fromancient Sanskrit texts, Dr.Ranganath, showed how the termfinds a pride of place in everyform of classical Indian literaturefrom the Vedas and Vedangas tothe Gita and the great epics likeRamayana and Mahabharata,
including Puranas, Tantric textsand stotras.
Answering a possiblequestion why and how the termis considered sacred, heexplained that the answer can befound in Mankha’s Ratnaprabhacommentary on the first aphorismof Badarayana Sutra ‘AthathoBrahma Jijnasa’.
Providing further elucidationto the point, Dr.Ranganath saidthat Aum as also the word Athaare believed to have directlyemerged from the mouth ofBrahma, and hence sacred.Again, Mankha in hisMankhakosa explains thecircumstances when the term ischanted. This included occasionswhen someone is honoured, receiving something, whileobserving silence, offeringworship, giving or receivingcharities and on all auspiciousoccasions. Hence the term madeup of Akara, Ukara and Makarahas verily a universal applicationas can be assessed from thedifferent texts in ancient Indianliterature.
Prof. S Ramaswamy, anequally eminent scholar presidedover the meeting.
