The passing away

of musical maestro VidwanR K Srikantan on Feb. 17,barely a month after his94th birthday, has comeas a shock to the BangaloreKendra of Bhavan. He was,not only a close associate ofthe Kendra, almost since itsinception, but a real mentorto both the Bhavanites andthe usual members of theaudience. Indeed, the doyen’sdemise is irreparable in thereal sense of the word.

Reciprocally, VirtuosoSrikantan himself had a softcorner for the Kendra, takingkeen interest not only inprogrammes related to musicbut almost all events andcelebrations under itsauspices. Besides conductingvery useful workshops for thebenefit of aspirants on variousaspects of music, he evincedkeen interest in the Kendra’sKala Bharati with particularreference to its sectiondealing with music- vocal, instrumental and percussion. In fact, this aesthetic activity

VidwanSrikantan was equallyappreciative of theBhavan’s contributionin the field ofpublications. In fact, its Pusthaka Bharatiwas one of hisfavourite haunts, often buying booksof choice. Likewise,he never rejected aninvitation to be theChief Guest at bookrelease functions. And

when he did so, one could be surethat he made a thoroughstudy of the relevant publicationand make very pertinent andeducative references about it. Hiswords on such occasions testifiednot only for his wide interests, buthis scholarship in the subject dealttherein.

It is no exaggeration if it isadded that in his passing away

SPECIALIST LISTSDO’S & DON’TSTO KEEPDIABETES AWAY

A study by the International

Diabetic Foundation (IDF) haspointed out that 6.3 crore Indianpopulation are diabetics as ofdate. As per the same survey,20 crore more might be addedby the year 2013, India therebygetting the dubious distinction ofbeing dubbed as “diabeticcapital’’.

These facts were revealedby Dr. K.S. Lakshminarayanaof Sri Vadiraja Trust.Dr. Lakshminarayana is arenowned practitioner inHomoeopathy withspecialisation in diabeties.

He was speaking at aworkshop jointly got up by theBhavan and the Trust on“Drugless Way of DefeatingDiabetes” at the Khinchaauditorium on Feb 9.

Analysing various causesfor inheriting diabetes andexplaining how important it is toadopt healing methods, besidesovercoming the use and abuse

of drugs to maintain sugar level,Dr. Lakshminarayana declaredthat the best way to controldiabetes is to take food onlywhen hungry and not as per thediet sheet of a hospital. Properlycooked, food should be takenwithin three hours of its cooking.Decayed food should be avoided,he advised, quoting severalancient texts.

Referring to our diet, thedoctor said our food comprisesof sweet (madhura), sour (amla),bitter (tikta), salty (lavana),pungent(katu) and astringent(kashaya). Its format is C6 H1206 (Carbon 6, Hydrogen 12and Oxygen 6). He advisedthat “we should allow the twelveorgans of our body to performtheir function to be able tonaturally take care of maintainingsugar level”. If there is extra sugar, the body will store it, if less the

body will automatically draw thesugar from the store, he added.

The doctor wondered howvalid the variation level fixed bydifferent laboratories can becredible as the entire system isunscientific. He displayed somelaboratory reports to showdifferent sugar levels of anindividual within a span of onehour.

In conclusion, the doctorsaid as long as one takes medicinehe is a patient. One has to takemedicine for certain ailments for aspecific period, but for a diabeticmedicine is a must for as long ashe lives. He however advisedcultivating the habit of the art ofself healing, pointing out thatthere were hundreds of drugless

processes. He demonstratedsome exercises which help theprocess.

On this occasion, mentallychallenged children of Vadirajatrust, presented couple of dancerecitals which touched hearts ofmany in the audience

It is nothing unusual if

eminent or even divinepersonalities are shrouded incontroversies. Lord Rama, considered as one of the Avatars(incarnations) of Vishnu was noexception, though many suchmisconceptions have been provedwrong.

This could be borne outfrom the commentaries of scholarson Srimad Ramayana, the epicstory of Sri Rama’s life, and thatprecisely was the topic ofan endowment lecture ofDr M E Rangachar, a scholar inVedanta for the Bhavan onFebruary 15, 2014.

The endowment is in honourof Dr. N S Anantharangachar, aneminent scholar and well-knownadministrator. The topic of thefirst talk in the endowmentwas entitled ‘RamayanadalliRasanimishagalu’.

Prefacing briefly on thetopic, Dr.Rangachar, a PhD

holder, winner of the President’saward and author of severalbooks, highlighted specificaspects where one comesacross certain dualities likewhether Rama was a human orGod, whether he had one wife ora bigamist, whether he was afterhis father’s kingdom etc.Such dualities have beendrawn, from the commentariesof renowned scholars likeGovindaraja andMaheswarateertha.

The speaker to set the recordstraight quoted from some stanzasas adequate ‘pramana’ (proofs)to show that Sri Rama wasundoubtedly God, a divine being. As emphatically, he asserted thathe was ‘Eka Patnivratasta’,vouched by none other than Sitaherself. The testimony comes inthe form of her clean chit for

Rama and Sri Rama himselfhaving said he ‘never looked atother women’, though it is truethat there were several women inthe palace serving him. Nor couldit be alleged that he was after theKingdom, though it was his birthright.

Dr. Rangacharya said that hebased his deduction on theinterpretation of different workslike Champu Ramayana,Raghuvamsha and theUpanishads.

Earlier, after the customarywelcome, Sri Srinivas Rangan, son of Dr.NSA gave some detailsof his distinguished father whowas at different points of timePrincipal of the Sanskrit College,

Mysore, DEO, DDPI, andRegistrar of the State ArtAcademies. After retiring, heserved as Registrar of Bhavanhere, adding that he was a prolificwriter, with no less than 100books to his credit, VaidikaSahitya Charite among them beingoutstanding.
