Early TournamentQ. - La t pring our club (125 members)

managed to buy the land we had lea ed forseveral years and tarted plans for grass green •We had no money but did have several memberwith ambition. Farmer members brought machin-ery, built bunkers and hauled rock and gravelfor a ba e. A friend gave us peat, another hauledit from Colorado and we borrowed a mixer. Com.paction tests told u to mix 2 oil, 1 coar e sand,1 peat. We placed 8 to 10 ins. on the greens, fer.tilized, and planted with Seaside ept. 1. Weath-er wa ideal and now only a few spot about 11/2in . in diameter have yet to fill. We got a newgreen mower and thi spring we top dressed, leveled, and lowered the cut until they are readyto putt on.

Ordinarily we have a tournament in June with150 entries. We have thought we may have todelay the event. everal member are eager totart playing the green . Is there any way that

we can take a hole cutter and check the greento tell when they are ready for play? orne ofus feel that we hould let the root y tern de-velop before we tart playing on them. Wouldyou tell us your opinion of the earlie t pos ibleplaying date? We understand that you are agraduate of the Univer ity of ebra ka. We feltthat you would have a better idea of how fastthi gras would develop in central ebraska.

A. With the good start you have, the care-Ful preparation of the soil mixture, the gooddrainage in the base and your deep concern fordeep root there should be no real reason whyyou should consider postponing your tournament.Maintain a good level of nitrogen to keep thegrass developing strongly. Bring the height ofcut down to putting level as quickly as possiblewithout scalping. low the greens every day -even twic a day when they are growing rapidly.Be ure the topdressing is weed free.

Water deeply and then let the surface becomerath r dry between irrigations. This will help toincreas root depth. dry putting .urface cantake much more abu e than one that is soggy. You may tart putting on the gre ens as .oon asthey are fit to play on. It will be a good ideato have them in play before the tournament -the play will be beneficial.
