The Weyburn Fire Department hosted a trainingday for the surrounding communities on February21. Firefighters from Estevan, Rouleau, Sedley,Yellow Grass and Weyburn spent a full day at thelocal fire hall, with classroom work in the morningand a hands-on training tactical mission in theafternoon.
The afternoon training session was a mock carcrash scene, which had several cars and one semi ina pile- up. The firefighters were split into groups, each working on an individual vehicle, with allgroups sharing the ultimate goal of safely and effec-tively gaining control of the accident scene.
The vehicles are donated locally and allow the
firefighters to get hands-on experience using rescueequipment, as well as experience working togetheras a team.
Temperatures were very frigid on Saturday andserved as a reminder that emergency workers notonly brave dangerous situations, but extreme ele-ments as well.

Weyburn Police deal with assault, theft and fraudOn February 22, at about 7:15 a.m., the Weyburn Police
Service received a call from staff at a local hotel. Two maleshad been fighting and one was found laying injured in thehotel corridor. Upon police arrival, both combatants weretaken to the Weyburn hospital where each refused treat-ment. A 21 year-old male was lodged in cells and held untilsober. A 29 year-old male was returned to his hotel room.Neither individual would provide evidence against the otherand no independent witnesses could be found.
On February 21, a Weyburn resident reported that anelderly family member had received a 'grandparent scam'telephone call. The caller said that he was her nephew andwas in trouble and needed money. The female did not pro-vide any money and terminated the call. Once again we wouldlike to reinforce that this is the correct action in these typesof calls. If they are legitimate, the caller will gladly providecall-back information which you can confirm through yourpolice department.
Also on February 21, the Weyburn Police responded to areport of a traffic collision on 11th Street at East Avenue. An investigation revealed that the vehicle travelling north on11th Street failed to yield the right-of-way resulting in a col-lision with a vehicle travelling west on East Avenue. MeaslesImmunization inSaskatchewan
The recent View from the Desk of the CEO about protectingyourself from measles provided information on the Canadianguidelines for immunization on the website of the Public HealthAgency of Canada. Each province has slightly different policies, and the bullets below summarize current Saskatchewan policyrelated to measles vaccine:
• Make sure your children are up to date, in the Saskatchewanimmunization schedule, children receive 2 (two) doses ofmeasles containing vaccine at 12 months and 18 months.
• Adults born in 1970 or more recently are eligible for 2 (two)doses of measles containing vaccine. International travelerswho were born between 1950 and 1970 are also eligible forone dose of measles vaccine unless they remember beingvaccinated, have had measles disease in the past, or a bloodtest to show they are protected.
• There is no current recommendation to immunize childrenearly going to the US. In countries where there is particularlyhigh risk during outbreaks, infants can be immunized between6 and 12 months with an extra (third) dose of measlescontaining vaccine. This does not apply to the US or theAmericas generally, where, despite the recent US cases, therates of disease are generally low.

On February 18, the Weyburn PS received a call regard-ing a suspicious male in the downtown core selling televisionsfrom his vehicle. On February 17, a Weyburn resident received an emailtelling him that he was due in court and that he should bringa number of personal papers. The person believed the emailto be fraudulent and did not open any attachments or oth-erwise respond to the matter. We wish to confirm that this isthe best course of action to take. If ever in doubt do notopen any strange or unsolicited email attachments or pro-vide personal identifying information over email.
Also on February 17, the Weyburn PS were dispatched toan apartment building regarding a male person causing adisturbance. Upon arrival, police found the person had leftthe scene. They were able to identify this person and shortlyafter located and arrested the 34 year-old male for beingintoxicated. He was lodged in cells until sober.
On February 16, the Weyburn PS were called to a reportof a disturbance at a local apartment. Upon arrival theylearned that the 26 year-old female suspect had already left.
The disturbance was over clothing and personal items. Also on February 16, while on routine patrol, the police
came across a vehicle parked in an area it should not havebeen. When checked, the 17 year-old female driver was foundto have open liquor in the vehicle. A further check revealedthat she had an outstanding arrest warrant.

Discover your passionBy Linda Wegner
Two years ago I published a book detailing some of the challenges I faced in my journeyfrom pastor's wife to business owner. Never meant to be a heart-rendering chronicle ofthe emotional ups and downs I faced, I wrote it as a step-by-step outline of how Godenabled me to move into a new and exciting phase of my life. Now I've decided to sharethree critical principles I followed in setting up my home-based business, mainly becauseI've found these things to be just as vital in my everyday life. I call them my 3Ds.
The first step in the journey required an understanding of what I wanted to do or moreaccurately, of what I was capable of doing. As much as I love music and playing the piano, there's no way my elementary skills would've enabled me to work as a musician. Cross thatone off the list. In a moment of panic I thought of applying for an entry level position ata large retail chain but I quickly realized my then recent battle with cancer left me physi-cally unprepared for the work. Another X.
What could I do? Then the light came on: although still relatively new to the field, I'dbeen published in nearly two dozen local newspapers and national religious magazines."That's what I'll do," I exclaimed excitedly to myself and my husband. "I'll establish abusiness as a writer!" The first principle: Discover your passion.
It was far from easy. People prophesied that I'd never be able to do it and I couldn'thave done it without supportive friends. But, nearly fifteen years later, I still run mycompany.
Life Lesson: devotion to sound business principles can bring much earthly success;
By Helen WallerI was having coffee with my husband the other morning.
It was the morning of our 15th wedding anniversary. Fif-teen years already? I couldn't wrap my mind around it. Itwas a startling realization that all that time had passed, con-sidering I still feel as though I am in my early twenties. We gotto talking about the first day he moved in. He showed upwith all his life’s belongings in two boxes and one garmentbag. You should have seen the look on my face. I mean, thisman was organized. Everything was packed neatly and hisclothes were on hangers and in a garment bag. I had neverseen anything like it. I had grown up with two rambunctiousbrothers and believe me when I tell you that the age-oldquestion "Were you raised in a barn?" may just of been

Welcome to the second weekend of/in Lent. As was mentioned in other columns, Lent isoften the time to "give up" something. Could it be that Lent offers Satan a season with awhole different set of possible temptations? When we "give something up" for Lent, what isthe purpose for this? Do we focus on Jesus or on the sacrifice that we are making when wegive up something, like chocolate, that we really do not need? Does this bring us closer toJesus in our lives? Even that question is backwards. Nothing we do can bring us closer toJesus. What can happen is that the Holy Spirit can work faith in Jesus to inspire us in Hisservice, but even this should not take away from focusing on Jesus.
The Church suggests Lent as a time of repentance, focusing on the suffering and death ofJesus. Even this can bring temptations. A few years ago, there was a movie that tried to showthe extreme horror of the crucifixion. Might this remove Jesus as the center, and focus onthe horror instead? When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, each temptation seemedreasonable, but He spoke the Word of God to overcome the temptations. How do we reactwhen temptations seem reasonable?
One temptation that congregations have is to focus on the financial part of the organiza-tion. They may have very active stewardship drives, fund raisers, and other events to bring inthe people so that the bottom line is in the black. Barbara Jurgenson wrote a book manyyears ago, offering some of the complaints of congregational members. For the complaintabout flea markets etc. she said, "You know the alternative. Give."
But even this is backwards. Only when a person is committed to Jesus will the financialsupport come. Church growth organizations have often stated that the reason for whichthe person comes will be the reason that he/she stays. Unless the reason is Jesus, there will befailure. Music, meals, and anything else but Jesus will bring people to an organization, butwill not ensure that Jesus is their Savior. Are we tempted to focus on (worship) money as acongregation? This can be a very big temptation.
Even this article can be a temptation. If I have led you to start thinking of other tempta-tions to avoid, then I have helped Satan. I pray that each of us will focus on Jesus, ourSavior, not only during Lent, but each day of our lives, repenting and asking for forgivenesswhen we are distracted. While driving, a cellular telephone can distract to cause an accident.Pray that Satan's distractions are not eternally fatal.

Opposites attract
invented by my mother. So, I found it quite endearing (we were just newlyweds after all) that my husband was so
neat and tidy. Not only was he not going to make a mess in my house, he sealed the deal withthe fact that he did not even use up his half of the closest space I had saved for him. A manafter a woman's heart. The rest is history or so they say, but in our case "opposites attract"seemed more fitting.
To give you an idea of how we both approached the idea of living together, I'd like tocompare our different attitudes to a few well-known Adam Sandler movies. I was the sort ofa "Just Go with It" kind-of-gal and my husband was more of a "Don't Mess With The Zohan"kind-of-guy. We were and still are complete polar opposites. For the 15 years we have beenmarried this has pretty much stayed the same.
That morning, as we had coffee, we had to laugh about it. I still am the kind of gal whoworries about the dishes AFTER the guests leave and he is still the kind of guy who doesn'tsimply put things down. He puts them back where they are supposed to be. This has workedfor years and as we get older we realized that opposites attract for a reason. We enjoy seeingin someone else the exact opposite approach we wouldn't take to a situation. Neither way is"right". They are both good approaches to life and work well in different situations.
After 15 years we have learned that people generally don't change. You get what yousigned up for. Opposites attract for a reason. They compliment each other and bring abouta sort of balance to life.
So the next time you look across the table and see your loved one, whether it be yourhusband, wife, friend or family member doing something that drives you crazy, remember, maybe your way or the highway isn't the answer. Sometimes looking at something from acompletely different view can provide a fresh way of looking at it.
