SIGNING ONTo access Westlaw UK on campus, use the link on your university intranet.To access Westlaw UK off campus go to www.westlaw.co.uk and log in via Athens oryour Home Organisation.For more help signing on to Westlaw UK, please contact your university library.

WELCOME PAGESearch for case law, legislation, journal articles, current awareness and EU materials.

SEARCHINGSearch across material types by using free text terms or the title of a document.

- Type your term(s) into the search field with or without connectors- Select the content you wish to search- Choose whether to search every word in the document (free text) or just the title- Choose whether to display Terms in Context within your results list - Click Search

SEARCH METHODSEvery search box supports “terms and connectors” functionality. This means that eachsearch term you enter is treated as a separate word. If you enter words using noconnectors Westlaw UK will automatically connect the words using an ‘AND’connector and return all documents where your terms appear.

Connectors you can use on Westlaw UK:

NATURAL LANGUAGEThis search facility does not use terms and connectors but allows you to describe yourissue in plain English, for example must a manufacturer disclose the side effects of a drug.

When you use Natural Language, you retrieve a maximum of 100 results. When yoursearch is complete, the documents are returned in order of relevance.

Retrieve cases by entering a Party Name, Citation or terms into the Free Text field.

You can combine any of these fields for a more refined search.

ADVANCED SEARCHEnables you to enter additional information to further refine your search such as thecourt or subject area. You can also add a date restriction.

BROWSINGYou can browse Case Analysis Documentsor Law Reports and Official Transcripts.

Once you have selected a report series youwill be taken to a list of years or volumes.Select a year/volume to view analphabetical list of cases.

CONTENTWestlaw UK contains UK court decisions, beginning in 1220 from:

- The Law Reports series published by the Incorporated Council of Law Reporting for England and Wales

- The Weekly Law Reports and Industrial Law Reports- Lloyds Law Reports- Session Cases published by the Scottish Council of Law Reporting- The English Reports- Sweet & Maxwell Law Reports- Full text transcripts covering the House of Lords, Court of Appeal, plus selected High

Court and Tribunal judgments back to 1999

STATUS ICONSAppear within your results list and at the top of the case document to immediatelyindicate the status of a case.

- Indicates judicial consideration.- Indicates that at least one point of law has been overruled or reversed. This is an

immediate notification that the case is no longer good law.

CASE ANALYSIS DOCUMENTSThe best place to start when looking for relevant case law. Each Case Analysisdocument contains the following information (where applicable):

- Where Reported - Significant Cases Cited- Digest of the case facts and decision - Journal Articles about your case- Direct History of the case - Legislation Cited- Subsequent Cases which have cited your case (and whether they have treated it

favourably or not)Each document includes links to access full text reports for the case.

CASES IN PDFAll law report series published by ICLR on Westlaw UK are available in full text and inPDF. Archive dates back to 1865.

Retrieve either an entireAct/SI, specific provisionof an Act/SI, or enterterms into the FreeText field. All legislationdocuments are updatedon a daily basis, Mondayto Friday.

ADVANCED SEARCHEnables you to choose whether to restrict your search to current legislation or expandit to include legislation that is no longer in force.

POINT IN TIMEEnables you to see how a piece of legislation stood at a particular date in the past.

BROWSINGBrowse to find Acts, SIs and provisions.

Browse Acts and SIs by Year, Title or byJurisdiction. When you get to a list ofActs/SIs you can choose to click the title toaccess the Arrangement of that Act/SI, or clickthe PDF icon to download a PDF version of it.

Use the navigation arrows to browse throughversions of an amended or repealed provision.

STATUTORY DEFINITIONSEnables you to find legislative definitions inActs and Statutory Instruments.

CONTENTWestlaw UK contains fully consolidated full text legislation covering Acts since 1267and Statutory Instruments since 1948 including pre- and post-devolution Scottishlegislation and Explanatory Notes, as well as Local Acts and Church Measures.

STATUS ICONS

- Indicates the version is historic and has been superseded.- Indicates the provision has pending amendments not yet in force.- Indicates the document or provision has been repealed.- Indicates the provision is not yet, or only partially in force (PDFs only).- Indicates the provision has been annotated.

ARRANGEMENT OF ACT/SIDetails all of the provisions within a piece of legislation enabling you to link directly toany section, paragraph, etc.

ANALYSISWestlaw UK provides in-depth analysis at both Act/SI level and provision level.The Overview Document and General Materials detail Act/SI information, such as allSIs made under an Act and all pending amendments.

PDF OF ENTIRE ACTUpdated daily, legislation PDF documents include commencement and amendmentdetails as well as an icon to indicate when a provision is not yet, or partially in force.

ANNOTATED STATUTESCarry out a legislation search (see previous page for details).

SEARCHindicates that a piece of legislation has been annotated by our team of 40 experts.

Within two weeks of Royal Assent our team, led by Barrister and ParliamentaryCounsel Daniel Greenberg, explain the effect, purpose and likely application of newActs of Parliament, Acts of the Scottish Parliament and selected StatutoryInstruments. Key legacy statutes will also be annotated.

THE ANNOTATION WINDOWBeneath the text of the legislative provision the annotation window is displayedcontaining guidance notes pertaining to that provision.

Where annotations are available this is indicated in the left-hand navigation. Selectingthis link takes you directly to the annotation window.

You can choose to expand the window to view the annotation and close it when you arefinished.

GENERAL NOTES LIBRARYWhere appropriate the annotations will link to concepts located in the General Notes Librarywhere more detailed commentary can be found. For example, Pepper v Hart below.

PRINT, SAVE AND E-MAILWhen printing, saving or e-mailing legislation content, you will have the option toinclude or exclude annotations with the Act or Statutory Instrument you have selected.

The LJI abstract enables you to see at a glance the key points of an article along withdirect links to relevant case law and legislation, plus links to the full text where available.

You can link straight through to publishers information by clicking the title of the journal.

Open any document on Westlaw UK and you will have the option to print, save ore-mail. Select your chosen option by clicking the relevant link located in the topright-hand corner of the screen.
