CHAIRMAN'S RAMBLINGSHi all, I hope you are getting some

better weather where you livethan we are here in Staffordshire.

My car is firmly fixed into its parkingspot in the garage as it has been too wetto take it anywhere for weeks.

I hope things improve for the W5CCtrack day at RAF Cottesmore on Friday26th August. If you are not aware, pleasetake a look at the website (or page 2 inthis issue) to find details of this day -which includes an open pit lane, sprintsessions, tuition and more!

Since the last edition, we have heldthe WSCC AGM at the Curborough Sprintmeeting in June. The main topic for

j conversation was the slow decline inmembership numbers that we have

witnessed over the last 18 months or so.As you may imagine, there was muchdebate around the reasons why themembership was declining in numbers

- the consensus was that people arepulling the drawstrings in' generally.Evidence of this is clear with a numberof Sprint meetings being cancelled thisyear due to lack of entrants.

A motion was passed at the meetingto look at the significant spend faced bythe club in producing and distributingthe magazine every other month. Youwill have noticed a questionnaireattached to this edition (on the backof the address carrier sheet) — thecommittee and I would be most gratefulof your time in completing this and

sending it back to me. As this is such animportant decision, I think it right thatwe gain a majority view on the futureof the magazine within our club.

On the subject of a number of sprintmeetings being cancelled, our thanksneeds to be extended to Nick Algarwho has worked tirelessly and quietlyin the background arranging a numberof replacement meetings so that thoseof us who compete in the WSCC SprintSeries can enjoy a full and varied season. Thanks Nick.

A final shameless plug; please put the19th November in your diary as the datefor the annual WSCC Dinner and Danceat the Lea Marston Hotel near SuttonColdfield.

We will publish a full itinerary for this |event shortly, but as usual, the eventwill incorporate the WSCC Sprint Seriesawards for 2011 and much fun/chat/ |drinks etc. besides. Not to be missed!

That's all for now. I hope you find alittle bit of good weather in betweenthe downpours, so that you can get outthere and enjoy your Westfields. If you |do, remember to keep it safe.

Regards,

Paul

Sun, Sea, Sand and - Doc Martin? The Black Country's annual getawaythis year was Cornwall. As usual

when heading to the south-west wemet up at the Michael Woods Serviceson the M5, for our rip-off "full English"breakfast and bad service that we have

j come to expect. After fuelling up, and arranging

| a second mortgage to pay for it, weheaded down the motorway to theExeter Services, where we had arrangedto meet Pete and Jan who had travelled

I down in their Sebring (a Healy 3000replica) the day before. When wearrived Pete was nowhere to be seen.He had had trouble with the wires tohis horn, (not a sexual pastime I hastento add!) shorting out and blowing a fusewhen he turned the steering wheel. After a quick repair he eventuallyarrived (horn-less), and we carried onour journey southwards.

Tintagel was bathed in sunshine aswe drove down the main street to ourdigs - The Pendrin Guest House. Afterunpacking it was time to find the nearestpub for a well-deserved drink or threeand arrange a large table for the ten ofus that evening for our meal.MondayAfter a superb breakfast we headedalong the Atlantic Highway to Port Isaac. This is where the popular TV series DocMartin, staring Martin Clunes, is filmedin which the town is renamed 'PortWenn'. As we walked down into thetown we saw that they where filmingoutside the cottage that is used as DocMartin's surgery. We walked around theharbour and, along with the crowds ofpeople, watched them filming.

As we left the village a thick mistdescended.

Our next stop was the Jamaica Innon Bodmin Moor, made famous by theDaphne DuMaurier novel of the samename. Her book was made into a TVdrama in 1983 staring none other thanPatrick Mcgoohan, who also starred (ifyou didn't already know) in the sixtiesseries The Prisoner - the reason I builtmy Westfield in the first place!

Pete was navigating using his Sat Nav,believed to be ex-KGB issue as it alwaystakes us past government and militaryfacilities, and this trip was no exception. We ended up driving across the runwayof a disused American airbase. With the

After a light lunch, a little lubrication, and a photo-shoot we headed back toTintagel for a break (quick nap) beforegoing out for our evening meal.TuesdayMy Daughter and her husband Ben hadcome to stay with us on Monday for acouple of days. After breakfast, I tookmy son-in-law with me to fill up withfuel before we started out for the day.He has been with my daughter for overeight years and this was the first timehe had been in my car. Needless to sayfollowing our short blast he wanted one.My daughter (who would prefer to spendthat sort of money on clothes) said hecould have one as long as it was brightpink! He's thinking about it.

Around 10:30 we all set off to ourfirst destination — Healey's Cider Farmat Penhallow, Truro. If you're ever downthis way on holiday it's certainly worth avisit. They have shire horses, goats, pigs,a large bullock and peacocks runningfree to keep the kids entertained, andcider, wine, and spirit tasting for theadults, but be warned, you may only geta little sample but their products arepotent!

After loading up Brian's boot (hewas in his Mazda) with all our bottleswe headed south down the A30 to theCornish Gold Centre at Redruth. Not

This is another place that's wellworth a visit. There are lots of shinythings to tempt the ladies — probablywhy it's free to get in!

After a photo-shoot around the hugeminers statue in the car park, we headedto The Badger public house in Lelantfor an early dinner. The Badger does anexcellent carvery in the evenings butI phoned and confirmed that they didbar meals during the afternoon. Theydid, but were not expecting ten peoplewanting a cooked meal to turn up atthe same time, apparently the chef gotin a right tizzy. After a very enjoyablemeal we headed towards our last portof call - St. Ives.

Prior to our tour I had contacted St.Ives Council to see if they would allowus to park on Smeaton's Pier, ratherthan park half a mile away in one ofthe public car parks. There are a fewparking places on the pier but you'vegot more chance of winning the lottery

Ifriend/y seal at St. tves

Permission was granted and after acouple of hours wondering around thetown and watching a friendly seal, whohad visited the harbour, we made ourdash northwards back to Tintagel. Thejourney was stressful as the wind had !got up making driving and keeping your Ihat on a bit of a challenge. It took its [toll as only four of us went to the pubwhen we got back.WednesdayMy daughter and her husband left after jbreakfast to join their friends for the •remainder of the week in St Ives. Brian jand Chris also left us at this point. They 'had only booked till the Wednesday dueto another commitment. As it turned out 'they could have (and wanted to) stayedanother day. Unfortunately, their roomwas needed and it would have been toomuch hassle to find somewhere else inTintagel just for one night.

Wednesday is traditionally our freeday when we give the westies a restand explore our surroundings. Four ofus decided to do a short coastal walkto see if we could find the TintagelMaze. This is a rock carving believedby some to be over 4,000 years old.It is the same pattern as one found inCrete. The Victorians heavily influencedand added to the legend of King Arthurat Tintagel, so some people think themaze may have something to do withthem. We did find it, next to a ruinedmonastery and mill. What should havebeen a leisurely stroll around the coastturned into a rock climbing expedition, covering a fair few miles.

I got the chance to visit TintagelCastle on the afternoon. This is notfor the faint-hearted, or high bloodpressure sufferers. There is a very steepwalk down to the entrance and an evensteeper climb into the first part of thecastle. My wife gave up on the first setof steps. I, being a man, decided to carryon only to be defeated when climbing upto the second part of the castle, calledthe Haven. A Land Rover was providedat a small charge, for people to betransported up the steep climb back tothe town, we admitted defeat and paidthe £2 fare which was well worth it.

Instead of our usual evening pub grub,we decided to have an Indian. Peteand Jan didn't fancy one so they had

• n the last update I'd commented that• we had been graced with some nice• weather. Unfortunately, I'd beenaway on holiday during the best of it.

I'd like to apologise to the WestfieldJ community for tempting fate and saying|"l just hope I've not missed the best

[ weather of the year". The weather overthe last couple of months has not beenthe best although we have managed tohave a few good days and a few eventsnevertheless.

We had a strong presence at our firstCurborough track day this year. Althoughthere was a few little showers therewere no major incidents and everyone

| enjoyed the day. One of the highlightsj of the day was Chippo showing off his

new car stickers. Apparently, he isadvertising his new Carbon Wrappingservice although don't tell him I sentyou ;-) or he will start with his godfatherimpressions ;-)

We also had a good turn out for theSupercar Sunday at Gaydon. The weatherwas kind the cars were polished andthe people friendly (many thanks to theChiltern 7's for allowing us to tag along).Although not ultimate supercars I thinkmy favourite was either the Morgon orthe new Lotus Evora. Before we had along and twisty blat home we did stopoff at Wellesbourne Mountford Airfieldto watch the Vulcan Bomber doing somehigh speed taxiing.

Unfortunately, I could not attend theAGM this year due to other commitments. One of these was a Westfield DriftDay at Milbrook. I have to say what athoroughly enjoyable day was had by

all. I'd recommend anyone who fanciescar control at the limit give it a go. Theinstructors are very knowledgeable andsoon had us all going sideways. It's atestament to the Westfield cars thatthey manage to take the abuse day inday out.

If anyone is thinking about what to getas a Birthday present for their loved onewho has everything then look no further. Now, Where's there a airfield where Ican go to practice my newly found skills•>

We have several more events plannedin the coming months, including a tripto The Black Country Living MuseumTransport Show and our secondCurborough track day of the year (Pleaseput your name down and pay yourdeposits ASAP to confirm your place).

For more details please check out ourarea web site (www.wscc.co.uk/area/Warwickshire), our facebook page (WSCCWarwickshire), or the WSCC Boardroomforum.

If you would like to be added toour e-mail distribution list to be kept

informed of upcoming events pleasedrop me an e-mail to steven-mead® ]steven-mead.com

As a closing note I'd like to welcomeJohn to the club with his V8, hopefully Iwe will be seeing you at one of ourregular area meetings soon (third [Thursday of the month at The FalconInn, Hatton )

Wirral/N. Wales

their tour of Wales

T ime has flown by yet again and notmany miles done in the Westfield.I have missed quite a few runs

out recently due to work commitments, but thanks to John (farmer) and DarrenPreston for leading the way on a few ofthe Sunday runs. These two guys alwaysseem to come up trumps when it comesto finding those little back roads withthe great scenery....

The run out on Sunday 20th Junewas just Jeff and Richard. They left theTudor Rose and headed off for a run tothe Great Orme along some good twisty

'B' roads to Llandudno, then up the tramroad to the cafe for a bacon butty andmug of tea - only to be told breakfastfood finished at 11.00am and they onlysell tea in a teapot with a cup a saucer.Jeff didn't get an answer when he askedif he had to stick his little finger outwhen he drank it. They then headedthrough Conwy Casle to Llanrwst whereRichard's Westi started to loose water[new water pump needed] so there wereno heroics and had a steady run back.

John Dolan's Y Ddraig Goch wasoriginally organised for June but due tothe forecast for rain it was rescheduledfor the beginning of July. A good timewas had by all with some of the bestdriving roads that wales has to offer.

Here is a quick run down of the eventsof the weekend by Mike Curtis.

Y DRAIG GOCH (YDG). The 'RedDragon' Tour of Wales 2011.

This year's YDG tour was three daysfor the first time — and what a threedays, great weather, fabulous roads anda very good Guest House.

Friday 1st July, we set off for

• Jeff ami Koichard on the Or,,

Llangollen, to Darren's Cafe, to samplea wonderful full breakfast. Many thanksfor the hospitality. On leaving the Cafecar park, Darren's wife Sandra bravelystopped the traffic for us all to leavein convoy. Wethen had agreat first daytouring ChirkCastle, Vyrnwy,Bala, Dolgellau,Machynl leth,Rhayader ande v e n t u a l l y( 7 p m ) w er e a c h e dL landr indodWells and ouraccommodation, the Highland Moors Guest House. Itproved to be an excellent choice withgood, secure car parking, very friendlyand clean. Highlight of the day was the35 miles of single track road betweenB a l a a n dDolgellau overthe mountaintops passingonly one carand a van.

D a y 2(Saturday) sawus exploring theBrecon Beacons,f r e q u e n t l ygett ing lost(thanks for themap readingFrank!). A trip across a closed armyfiring range caused a few concerns butit was worth it when we experienced the

| wonderful roads around Lyn Brianne. One downside to all these single j

track roads is the amount of cowsh't, jI Jeff went through a large wet patch oni the road at speed, got covered himself, I

and covered Darren and John who were jfollowing close behind. Plenty of tissues jwere needed for the facial clean ups.

On returning to the guest house \we were asked by the owners to pose jthe cars for publicity photos on their

: front lawn. Half an hour later after !some frantic cleaning, the cars were iassembled and some good photos weretaken.

Jeff's V8 had developed a very loudsquealing from the rear brake calliperduring the day and as we were all tiredit was decided to sort out the problemin the morning.

Day 3 (Sunday) saw Jeff up at 4.30amto mend his brakes, he let us all know

at 7am that hehad fixed themby gunning theV8 down thehotel drivewayand waking usall up!

We cou ldnot leave thearea withoutone last blastd o w n t h eElan Valley -our all-time

favourite 'Blat'. At Devil's Bridge weagain posed for photos, this time bythe Station Master as the narrow gaugesteam train was due in 10 minutes.

We then set off for home. Not directlyas we hadfound anothergood lookingsingle t rackroad on themap aroundthe N a n t - y -Moch reservoir,a road noneo f us h a dsampled beforeand what afabulous wayto end our tour.

It was a beautiful road and scenery withsome excellent stretches of tarmac withfast sweeping switchback bends. Oh joy!

In summary we all agreed that we hadthree of the best day's motoring. Over |700 miles of the best Welsh roads withgreat scenery, great weather (weren'twe lucky) and, to top it all, excellent !accommodation.

Thanks must go to John (Bollocky Bill) Ifor organising the tour, Jeff for his route *planning and Darren for his wonderfulbreakfast, and Frank for making us laughabout his map reading.

For a full two page report keep an eyeout in a future magazine for a full spreadincluding many more photos.

Our July club night was somewhat ofa damp affair. Whichever way we turnedwe found the rain. At one point on theway back we had no choice but to putthe roof up, and I have to say its not verygraceful getting in especially when your6'5"; but was still good to get out in theWesti despite the rain.

A warm welcome to our newest localmember, Tommy from Farndon nearChester who came along to say helloin his pretty well sorted SEiW Westi. Avery tidy motor, but he has only ownedit for a few weeks and the upgrade-itishas already set in. Talk of new camsetc. are on the cards, although to behonest there is not too much more hecan do. He has come from the world ofRobin Hood sports cars but, thanks toan elderly Gentleman who pulled outand wrote Tommy's Robin hood off, hehas now joined us.

As I type this article we are gettingready for the Pageant of Power, afantastic day out for the whole familyand now firmly penned into the calendar. This will be our fourth year at this event,a must for the motoring nut.

An upcoming event for the diary isthe Gold Cup, held at Oulton Park onthe 28th-29th August. This is one of thehighlights of the year and, as in previousyears, we will have our club stand there.See the events section on the WSCCforum for more details.

Our monthly meets take place at theTudor Rose pub at the junction of theA550 and A540, next to Two Mills Honda,on the first Tuesday of every month —everyone welcome
