The Journey to America Alisher Bozorov is no ordinary driver. He has been a man on a long
journey to become a citizen of the United States of America. He
came to the states (Illinois) at age 17 and it has taken him 14 years to
make citizenship a reality. Alisher is an unbelievably proud man who
always has a smile on his face and a kind word to share. He has
built a happy life with his wife whom he met here at Governors State
University. They have 2 children, a boy & girl ages 8 & 3. He said
it’s been a long and costly 14 years, but all worth it. Alisher says the
best thing about being a US citizen is the “opportunity to be yourself.”
You don’t have to worry about religious persecution and can speak
your mind without the fear of retribution. “This is truly the land of the
free.”

I would first like to thank everyone at West Side for
making me feel so welcome in my new role. After be-
ing on the team for a couple of months I am very im-
pressed with a great group of dedicated employees.
As we all know the trucking business is always a
challenge and it is not a career for those who don’t
enjoy the excitement of a changing work day. The
trucking business is stimulating for those of us who love this business. I truly appreciate
what you do each day to service our customers in a safe and efficient manner.
I would like to let you know about the areas that we are going to focus on over the next
year.
1. Create the best Driving Career in The Trucking Industry. To make this a reality our
company will focus on three areas for our drivers;
Respect for the job you do
Quality home time
A good steady paycheck
2. Driver Friendly customers
Collect and provide feedback on how they treat our staff
Work with our customers to improve our partnership with them
Align West Side with the best customers possible
We are also targeting January 2015 to update our compensation packages to reflect the
realities of our customer and freight network. In this process we are going to simplify the
bonus structure. This change will enable you to understand how to achieve the bonus
and receive the current month bonus on a timely basis.
As a part of the compensation change we are also in the process of attempting to pull
our shorter customer freight out of the regional and fleet driver’s network by creating a
“Bounce” Fleet. This fleet will focus on the >150 mile loads and help keep the system
drivers moving. This change will help keep you off the short loads that eat up your valua-
ble HOS. You may be approached about a bounce position if available. Thanks again
and please always be safe.

TAKING CARE OF FAMILY
In late August, I received a phone call from
our driver Ron Smith. He told me a very
touching story about his daughter who had
battled cancer early on in her life and was now
losing her eye sight. His family had been
fundraising for a surgery that could only be
performed out in Beverly Hills, CA that would
stop the deterioration of her eye sight. In an
effort to make it more affordable, Ron’s
daughter asked if West Side would be able to
find a load for them to take out to California,
thus eliminating the cost of flying there. Cus-
tomer Service & Pricing Director, Cory Rich-
mond then reached out to PepsiCo and they
were able to award us a load that would allow
Ron to get his daughter to California for the
surgery. On September 11, 2014 Ron picked
his daughter up in Chicago and they began
their journey. On September 12th, Ron came
into the Cedar Rapids office with his daughter,
Ronnina by his side. It was then, that many of
us who had worked on coordinating this trip,
realized the gratitude that the Smith family
had for West Side. Ronnina is doing well and
plans to keep us updated!

Fuel Great news, we are finally done getting all of the new trucks on the road. Even better news is that they are getting excellent MPG. In fact our driver with the highest MPG for August was in a new Internation-al sleeper unit. Richard Hitchman had a MPG of 9.01---this is awesome.
Below is a listing of the drivers with the top five MPG for the month of August; in addition these drivers are the only ones with MPG over 8.0. The combined idle for the below drivers was 9.7% for the entire month.
Richard Hitchman, unit 45702-- 9.01 MPG
Tony Leap, unit 45780---8.32 MPG
Jonathon Earle, unit 45702—8.31 MPG
John Rogers, unit 45733—8.03 MPG
BJ Kost, unit 44511—8.01 MPG
A reminder as we head into the cooler weather, all of the West Side sleeper trac-tors are equipped with bunk heaters. If you haven’t already, please take a few minutes to make sure yours is working. West Side has made a significant invest-ment in the climate control units for the 2013/2014 Volvos, 2015 Freightliners and the 2015 Internationals. Properly function-ing equipment will keep you more com-fortable, earn you a higher bonus and all the while save on our company’s fuel spend.
I have ordered a DEF tank similar to the one at our Cedar Rapids terminal for the Glenwood location. With all of the new units requiring DEF we will be able to save a substantial amount of money on our DEF purchases by increasing our capacity at Glenwood. The new tank will save us approximately $.25 per gallon versus the totes that are currently in place. Please do your best to always fill your DEF at the one of the Cedar Rapids terminals or at Glenwood whenever possi-ble. For your reference our DEF costs vary greatly by purchase location; $5.00 a gallon in a jug, $2.80 at the pumps over the road, $1.63 in Glenwood, $1.30 in Glenwood when new tanks arrive and $1.08 per gallon in the Cedar Rapids yards. I am currently looking into options for the St. Paul and Indy yards as well---stay tuned.
I can also report that our ongoing internet issues at the new yard which caused a lot of failed transactions has been fixed. If any of you experience any issues going forward with errors 0 or 13 please let me know. I appreciate everyone’s patience dealing with the communication problems these past few months.

Every West Side truck is equipped with an Espar Bunk Heater that is de-signed to keep you warm in cold weather without idling the truck.
Cold weather will be here before you know it and it is a good idea to make sure that your bunk heater is working before you need it.
Please take some time in the month of October to run the bunk heater for 30 minutes. If your bunk heater does not run please get your truck to Ce-dar Rapids so that we can repair it before it gets cold.
It is normal to see smoke come from the bunk heaters exhaust pipe when the unit is first started.
The bunk heater should not be left on while driving the truck, this causes excessive wear and wastes fuel.
Payroll
DEADLINES
Trucking has many deadlines but I thought it might be helpful to do an article to recap some of the many DEADLINES the Payroll Dept has.
Just a refresher as you can always find this in your Driver Manual.
Deadline to be empty or T called off your load for Payroll Cut off
Midnight Friday
Deadline to Scan your trip paperwork for loads you have de-livered by Friday at midnight.
Saturday NOON
If you had an issue with missing the Noon Saturday deadline to scan, your deadline to call me about it is NOON Monday.
Maximum Deadline to have a Trip Sheet and billing paper-work in so you don’t lose pay on a load, 30 Days from the de-livery date.
Maximum Deadline to have a receipt turned in for reimburse-ment is 30 days from receipt date.

Top Account Updates
International Paper Update
Oct 1st the Cedar Paper mill will be utilizing the Gate Pass system. This is
the same system that IP Cayuga and IP Maysville KY are on. You will no
longer be issued CR numbers. Instead, the gate pass number will be in
your BOL field. You will be handed the gate pass at the supplier. If you do
not receive one, please do not leave the supplier and call into dispatch
right away. You must have the original gate pass in order to be processed
through the mill. It is important if dropping the trailer at a yard, you leave
the gate pass with the paperwork. The gate-pass needs to be kept in good
shape so it will scan at the gate. November 1st the Henderson mill will be
on gate pass system as well. This should help eliminate confusion of when
we need one and when we do not once all the mills are on the same sys-
tem.
Please remember to inspect trailers thoroughly after unloading or when
picking up at a supplier. Call any damage in to Ron Painter at extension
158. We are working with International Paper to track damage with suppli-
ers and receivers and need your help.
Thanks for your feedback! We are continuing to work with Corporate to
help get the box plants to remove the mats after unloading. If there are
any box plants that are removing the mats now, please let dispatch know
so we can remove them off the list to work on.
Finally, most of the IP Box plants are on an appointment system now.
Many do not have room for trucks to wait in line so it is important that we
honor our appointment times and not show up more than 30 min prior to
the scheduled time. If you cannot make your scheduled time, please notify
dispatch right away and we can see if there is a different time available.
Thanks for all your hard work in servicing this account. It does not go un-
noticed and we have made a great name for ourselves at International Pa-
per corporate.
PepsiCo
As many of you know we were awarded the Midwest Carrier of the year for
PepsiCo in 2013. We have handled the dedicated business to and from
Cedar Rapids, IA for a many years now and it is a very important piece of
business for West Side Transport. Lately we have been having some is-
sues with presenting clean trailers to PepsiCo and this has had a negative
impact on our overall fleet. Rest assured the Operations Team in conjunc-
tion with our Sales Team is doing everything necessary to rectify the situa-
tion. I am asking that all of our drivers make sure they sweep out the trail-
ers very well before picking up all loads as the process can often times
prevent trailer issues and allow for West Side Transport to grow with our
customers and increase our focus to provide driver friendly opportunities to
our drivers. We will continue to do business with PepsiCo and with a little
extra effort on our trailer cleanliness we can make sure we grow with Pep-
siCo. I appreciate all of the hard work our drivers do, we certainly have the
best drivers in the industry.

Seals
Hopefully everyone is aware of West Side’s policy to seal every
load. It’s important to seal every load, because in this business,
not doing so can cost us a lot of money. Every load means EVE-
RY load, even scrap loads.
Recently the Qualcomm was set up so that there’s a mandatory
field to enter the seal number when you pick up a load. That field
is not for make believe seal numbers, it’s for the seal that actual-
ly gets put on the trailer by the driver who picks the load up. If
the shipper does not provide a seal, a West Side seal needs to
be fastened to the trailer doors.
If you are picking up a load and the trailer is not sealed by the
shipper it is your job to put the seal on the trailer…not the next
guy who picks the load up. I’ve spoken with a number of drivers
about this. If you pick up a paper load for example at IP in Cedar
Rapids and drop it in the South lot or the terminal, you need to
seal the trailer. I have heard drivers say they want the next driver
to be able to look at the load to make sure it’s okay. My answer
to that is: just about everybody knows what a trailer full of six or
seven rolls looks like. Why does the next driver need to look at
it?
This week one of our city drivers that I talked to about this sent a
list of trailers at the South lot that were not sealed and the seals
were still in the bill box. There were 69 loads. That number
should be zero. Please get in the habit of sealing every load if
you aren’t already. You don’t see the cargo claims that our cus-
tomers send us but I can tell you that if everyone followed West
Side’s seal policy, we would receive fewer claims. If you have
any questions about the policy, please contact me at ext. 150
and we can discuss. Thanks for your cooperation.

SAFETY Aggressive Driving
Aggressive Driving Definition: “The operation of a motor vehicle in such a manner that endangers or is likely to endanger persons or property” Aggressive driving poses a serious traffic safety threat. One aggressive driving act by one driver can trigger a disproportionate response, sometimes even escalating to the level of “Road Rage.” Aggressive driving happens when a driver allows their anger, frustration, or other emotions control how they drive. There are many causes of aggressive driving such as: Being behind schedule, stuck in traffic, stressed or fatigued, just to name a few. These factors may push your driving habits to the extreme but a PROFESSIONAL driver has a responsibility to guard against “letting emotions do the driving.” Are you an aggressive driver? Take the driver quiz. Do you:
1. Get angry at drivers? 2. Get angry at fast drivers? 3. Get angry at slow drivers? 4. Get angry when cut off? 5. Get angry at malfunctioning stoplights? 6. Get angry at traffic jams? 7. Spouse or friends tell you to calm down?
8. Get angry at tailgaters? 9. Get angry at your passengers? 10. Get angry when a multilane highway narrows?
If you answered yes to any one of the questions then you fall into the “aggressive driver” category. The “Do as I say not as I do” attitude is very common in aggressive driving. West Side Transport utilizes the Qualcomm stability control and hard breaking programs to examine ag-gressive driving habits and create a corrective plan of action for drivers when necessary. If you had the option to monitor people who were driving your personal vehicle, it would be nice to get a report as to know if they respected your vehicle as you do. The Qualcomm report gives West Side Transport this type of in-formation. All drivers need to examine, and when needed, correct their own unsafe driving habits, which are likely to endanger, antagonize or provoke other motorists. You can avoid driving aggressively if you focus on the road ahead, keep calm when your situation gets stressful, allow plenty of time for your route, expect traffic and construction delays as they are a part of life on the road. You need to assume that the actions of other drivers are not “personal.” They are not trying to irritate or delay you; they just make simple mistakes and remember, “There is NO load worth your life or anyone else’s life. Always practice the Smith System defensive driving and have a 6 second space distance in front of you on clean, dry pavement. If the roads are not clean and dry, double the space distance to at least 12 seconds. Remember it will take the length of 2 football fields for a tractor and trailer to come to a complete stop if you are traveling at a rate of 55 MPH. You don’t need to travel with the flow of traffic as it only takes one per-son to slam on their brakes and create a multi vehicle pile-up. The pebble in the stream concept works the best. Allow traffic to flow around you. Stay in the lane of least resistance which is the center lane or the right lane if there are only two lanes available. With winter around the corner we need to expect delays and be a professional defensive driver. Make your safety your number one priority.
MARRIAGES
Driver Joe Spitzley was mar-
ried to Melissa on August
23th. Congratulations to both
of you!
Recruiting
Make an Extra $20,000! How?
Referral bonus that’s how! Pam Jordan an experienced driver for West Side Transport made an extra $23,000 in referral bonuses in one
year! Pam took every opportunity she could to speak to other drivers out on the road talking about working for West Side and how we treat
our hard working, dedicated drivers. The payout for the referral bonus is in 3 separate payments. First payment is made once the driver you
referred delivers their first load, then the 2nd payment is made when they hit their 2 month anniversary date with West Side, and 3rd and final
payment is made after that drivers has been with us for 6 months! We do all the work and all you have to do is talk about West Side and
how great it is to work here! Stop in the Recruiting Office in Cedar Rapids, IA and ask for Justin or stop in the Orientation Building in Glen-
wood and ask for Stacie so we can put together your business cards! Example of a business card below. Treat the referral bonus as your
own business. Go out and sell it, own it, give examples of when things went right and wrong, check on your recruits status with recruiting
and most important make sure you get PAID!!
Call Justin at 319-390-4466 ext. 201 if you want me to make you some business cards in advance so you can just grab them when you are
in Cedar Rapids, IA or Glenwood, IL.
Referral Bonus Contest
Now that I explained how the referral bonus works I want to challenge every single one of West Side Transport’s drivers to hit the pavement
and start talking to other drivers about West Side Transport. The top 3 drivers that refer the most drivers will receive a prize.
Start Date: 10/01/2014
End Date: 12/15/2014. Just in time for Christmas and all of those Christmas gifts!
How I would do it: I would hand your business card to any driver that is seriously thinking about coming on board with West Side Transport.
Get as much information from that driver as you can such as, name, home base and phone number. Then call recruiting (800-677-5627)
and give the information to one of the recruiters so we can reach out and contact the driver. Make sure that we get your name so we can fill
out your driver referral sheet.
1st Place Prize: $1000 Visa Gift Card
2nd Place Prize: $500 Visa Gift Card
3rd Place Prize: $250 Visa Gift Card
Justin (manager of recruiting) will track referrals and send out a QUALCOMM message to the winners of the referral contest in January. He
will hand out the prizes in January and take a picture with our 3 top finishers to put on our website and Facebook page.
New Additions to Recruiting
Welcome Tyler Garcia to the West Side Transport Recruiting Team! Tyler is based out of our St. Paul, MN terminal. Tyler started with West
Side Transport on night dispatch and decided he wanted a change of scenery and moved to Minnesota. West Side is happy to have a full
time recruiter based in St. Paul, MN.
Welcome Stacie LoBue as well to the West Side Transport Recruiting Team! Stacie is based out of our Glenwood, IL terminal. Stacie came
over to recruiting from being our Safety Coordinator in Glenwood. We are happy to have her in recruiting out of our Glenwood terminal!
Michelle is a brand new edition to our Recruiting Team as well. She moved to recruiting from logistics and will be our recruiter processor
and orientation processing liaison. She will be based in Cedar Rapids, IA working in the Recruiting Department.
ACCOUNTS RECEIVABLE Helpful reminders to make sure your pay is processed and customers can be invoiced. If you deliver into a facility we drop loads at, make sure some-one signs for the load. If nobody is available, make sure YOU write on the Bills of Lading “dropped, seal intact” and date it. When delivering into these International Paper facilities, make sure you obtain a “Drop Load Ticket” commonly referred to as the waste tally. This is IP’s form of proof of delivery. Maysville, KY Cayuga, IN Prattville, AL Pine Hill, AL Cedar Rapids, IA (starting 10/1/14) When scanning your bills of lading, make sure you have scanned the bills reflecting all stops, and for all product oved on the shipment. A summary page of the BOL is often not ac-ceptable for customers to issue payment. Make sure you write the correct trip # on your trip sheet. NEVER leave all the bills with a dropped shipment, you need to retain a copy of them showing you dropped the load at their facility. Make sure your images are legible when you scan them in, if
you can’t read them others probably can’t either.
WELLNESS TIPS FOR THE PROFESSIONAL DRIVER
Eat healthy food every 3 hours to keep your body and brain in high gear. Try running a truck on empty! Your body uses food (the body’s fuel) in about 3 hours. If you don’t refuel your body it increases your fat stor-age to help you last longer. Eating a fist size of healthy food every 3 hours steadily fuels your body, keeps you focused, sheds your fat storage and gives you high energy. Drink water when you get the crav-ing for unhealthy foods. Hy-drate your body first! Energy Foods: Protein – Chicken/turkey slices, cheese, eggs, nuts, beef jerky, shakes, and bars. Vegetables – eat a variety! Re-member corn and potatoes don’t count as vegetables. Fruit – eat a variety. Whole grain/Wheat – made with 100% whole grain/wheat flour. Tastes like a treat, but is healthy – low sugar/carb protein bars, cocoa covered almonds, sunflower seeds, flavored pro-tein shakes, Greek Yogurt, choose diet or zero products.

Auto Start/Stop and Optimized Idle
Our new 2015 tractors also have a feature that will monitor your battery voltage and your oil temperature. These trucks are designed to start the truck automatically if the battery voltage or oil temperatures drop too low. To enable this feature on the Freightliners you simply have to cycle the cruise control off and back on with the brakes set and the engine idling. A light on the dash will come on that say Idle Optimizer and will flash for 5 minutes, after 5 minutes the truck will engine will shut down and the sys-tem is armed. If the battery voltage or oil temperature drop below the set point then the engine will restart on its own to charge or warm the engine. The key must be left in the ignition and in the run position for Opt Idle to function. To enable this feature on the Navistar you must push the Auto Start/Stop button located on the dash within 30 seconds of shutting off the truck. The key should be in the off position or in your pocket for Auto Start/Stop to work.
