Our open classrooms were a great opportunity for parents and carers to see the contemporary teaching and learning programs occurring at school. For those of you who were unable to make the open classrooms, another time has been made available on Monday 8 August from 10- 11am. We had many parents/carers stay for the community picnic and enjoy a nice lunch with our students. Our special guests for the day were our visiting Japanese Exchange students from Lurnea High School. We had twelve students come into classrooms and demonstrate traditional Japanese games such as origami and Kendo. This was a valuable learning experience for all students involved. Read more about the visit later in the newsletter from a report by the school captains. SAS Staff Recognition Week Week 3 also sees the opportunity to recognize the hard work and dedication of our School Administration Staff. These include our administrative managers, administrative officers, School Learning Support Officers, Aboriginal Education Officers and our General Assistant. The theme for this year is ‘SAS Staff.. Stepping up to the Challenge”. Our SAS staff play a vital role in the running of the school and we acknowledge their ongoing efforts this week. National Partnerships We are well on our way to completing our Situational Analysis, as part of the National Partnership program. Parents/carers would have received a Community Engagement survey and an invitation to attend an information session. The purpose of the survey is to gauge as much information on our strengths and areas where we could improve community participation. It is important that we have as many surveys returned to help us plan our directions for 2012. All surveys are completed confidentially. Should you require additional copies, please see the office staff. Newsletter This will be the last time our newsletter is photocopied for all students. From feedback from parents/carers, and to minimize our carbon footprint, we will be trailing a new method of publishing a limited number of copies and making them available at the front office. We will continue to publish the newsletter on our school website. Don’t forget to check out our school website, as it is always being updated regularly. Should you have any enquires or feedback about the newsletter, please do not hesitate to contact the office or send us an email. Have a great week! Lauren Dunlop Assistant Principal

    Ambassador’s Letter

On June 22, an Ambassadors’ for Public Education team building day for school ambassadors within the Ingleburn and Liverpool areas was held at Belgenny Farm, Camden. I was lucky enough to be chosen as Lurnea Public School’s Ambassador for 2011. During my day at Belgenny Farm, we had slideshows to help us express our views to the media, talks about accepting others’ differences (Together For Humanity) and a team building exercise which involved leadership and communication. Our team building exercise was to put up a medical tent in 45 minutes after a cyclone had hit an area of our control. During the exercise, we had to find and recover materials as a group, which would allow us to put up the tent. Even with the wind, we managed to get the tent up in the given time limit and then had to put it back down again. The experiences on the day helped me develop my communication skills. I enjoyed every last minute of the day and I would like to do it all again soon!

LAaFF is fast approaching! The students are quite excited and have been practising extremely hard to ensure their performances are excellent. We have three groups performing this year; Junior dance group with Mrs Tarlton & Miss McIntyre, Senior choir with Miss Wilson and Stage 3 dance group with Mr Chippindall, Mrs Chippindall & Mrs Bussell. This year the LAaFF concert will be held at Hoxton Park Anglican Church on Tuesday 13 September 2011. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased by placing money in an envelope with your details on the front. Completed envelopes can be placed in the mailbox at the front office. It would be great if you could come along and support our students. It’s a fantastic night for the entire family.

    From our School Captains…

JAPANESE TRADITION ALIVE IN LURNEA Wow, what a day we had! Twelve Japanese Exchange students took us into their world of traditional games. We asked the students if they liked Australia and one of the students said, “I LOVE AUSTRALIA!” We laughed all the way to the connected classroom. To our surprise, 2/3K were already in there waiting patiently for our guests. We introduced our guests and then we experienced Kendo performed by two male students. It took a lot of concentration and determination to learn the skills to perform this traditional sword fight. After that, we had an origami lesson from three of the female students. They demonstrated how to make a samurai battle helmet. After that, we said our goodbyes to 2/3K and moved onto 2T.

2T were surprised to see these Japanese exchange students come into their classroom. First, they performed Kendo again. Then we played their style of Scissors, Paper, Rock where you get a partner and verse them, and then the loser stands behind you holding your shoulders. You verse others and the line continues until you have one line with the winner standing in front. The three girls showed 2T the previous origami lesson.

Next, we went back to the connected classroom to have lunch. The students looked at the food and noticed something unusual and asked what it was. We explained it was fairy bread. We told them to try it and before we knew it, it was all gone. You could tell they liked it because they all had at least two or three pieces each. After lunch, we talked to them about things they liked and what we liked. That day was one of the best days we have ever had. Thank you for bringing Japanese tradition to LURNEA.

UTS Parents’ Day A group of over 200 parents from primary schools and high schools across South West Sydney were treated to an interesting and informative day at UTS recently. The presentations were aimed at a parent’s perspective, to help them support their child when considering their post school options. They covered the benefits of further education in getting a job, helping your child choose a course that’s right for them, how to apply for university, costs involved, scholarships and other useful tips for parents. We were then split into groups for faculty tours around the university. Our group went to look at the Nursing Unit which houses some of the most advanced and impressive electronic equipment available to simulate different medical situations. The University staff were very friendly and happy to answer any questions over the delicious lunch that followed. The small group from Lurnea felt the day was very worthwhile and a lot of fun. If the opportunity comes up again, we would definitely recommend you go!

Playgroup We are very fortunate to have Wendy and Lisa, two experienced Playgroup leaders from Lurnea Neighbourhood Connections, coming in to run a Playgroup for parents and their pre-school aged children at our school. Day: Every Tuesday Time: 9am to 11am Venue: ‘E’ Block Cost: $2 If you would like to spend some time socialising with other parents in a relaxed atmosphere while your child enjoys craft activities, music time and playing with other youngsters, then please pop in and visit Playgroup next Tuesday. You may like to bring morning tea for your child to enjoy while sitting with their new friends.

In case you needed more reason to go shopping ...

When you and your family, friends or neighbours, are out doing your shopping, you could also be gaining benefits for our school. We have registered for two very exciting promotions that our school has previously had great success in. Casula Mall is running the Scholar Dollars promotion from 8 August until 18 September during which every $1 you spend at the Mall equals one Scholar Dollar. Last year our community was successful in registering the highest number of Scholar Dollars and won the first prize of $5,000. The prize money was spent on an interactive whiteboard for one of our classrooms which has increased the learning opportunities for the students. This year the first prize has increased to $8,000 with two $500 Casula Mall shopping sprees to be won by individual shoppers. Simply register your receipts every time you shop at Casula Mall and allocate points to our school. Coles has launched their 2011 Sports for Schools program which enables us to collect vouchers for much needed sports equipment. Vouchers will be available in supermarkets from 11 August until 19 October and can be dropped into the collection box at the front office. For every $10 you spend at Coles, you will be awarded one voucher. Last year our school collected in excess of 11,000 vouchers which purchased fourteen pieces of sports equipment that were used at this year’s Athletics Carnival. Let’s see if we can improve on that number this year! For the first time we have registered for the Woolworths Earn and Learn promotion which is open now until 18 September. You simply bring your Woolworths dockets to school and we will upload the points which can be redeemed for education items such as library books, classroom supplies, outdoor equipment and much more.

Kmart are running a national art competition for primary schools to celebrate the generosity of people who give their time and support to help others. Whether it is helping out during bushfires, floods or right here in our own school, volunteers are a valuable resource to the community. Our school has registered to participate in this competition which is open now and closes on 9 September. Fantastic Prizes to be won!

    School Banking update

We have a large number of Lurnea students who have been very busy making weekly deposits into their Dollarmites Account using the School Banking system. For every deposit made at school, no matter how big or small, students will receive a cool Dollarmites token. Once students have individually collected 10 tokens they can then be redeemed for a range of great, exclusive reward items in recognition of their continued savings behaviour. Don’t forget, School Banking day is Wednesday and deposit books can be dropped into the money collection box at the front office.
